“I just wanted to say “Thank You” for providing a GREAT summer camp experience for my son at the park this summer. The counselors and the program were terrific! While he enjoyed all the activities and field trips, he especially enjoyed the daily fishing activity, something that could not be offered at any other camp location. The field trips were a really nice addition to the program and the one to the Miami Seaquarium was really exciting. The Boat Club Park (Oyer Park) is the ideal place for this camp. Thanks again for a great summer activity.” Nancy & Jim Dunn

MeetThe

InstructorSusan Allshouse

How did you get involved in coaching tennis? While in high school, I had the opportunity to play a variety of team sports competitively. When I started college I had the chance to try tennis and fell in love with the sport and quickly entered the arena as an amateur and then professional player.

What do you like about the 12 & under tennis format for teaching purposes? It’s tennis for a new generation. It’s a revolutionary change in the way kids learn and play tennis. It is a formula that tailors equipment and courts to a child’s size and age so that they develop skills and have fun right from the start so that kids can learn, rally, play and compete in a way that is more fun, keeping them coming back for more.

How did you choose the Boynton Beach Recreation and Parks Department as a place to teach?Offering tennis in our schools provides the best way to introduce the sport to our kids and the Palm Beach County School District has been an excellent community partner with USTA Florida. The next step on the Youth Tennis Pathway is to provide affordable Tennis in the Parks programs, so youth tennis at Hester Center was a perfect addition to the other park and community programs I was already involved in.

What is your favorite part of the job?The smiles and laughter that come with the enjoyment of play. Seeing the kids grow and develop physically, mentally, emotionally and socially through sports and being a part of a team. Bringing families together in a healthy and fun activity.

What will students learn in your classes?Kids will learn athletic development, the basic skills, and be introduced to the sport through fun and easy activities and games starting the first day. We also like to stress that tennis provides a great opportunity to introduce and reinforce essential character traits including respect, honesty, teamwork, and responsibility emphasized through cooperative play.

Benefits of ArtArt is the transformation of the tangible (bodies, instruments, paper, ink, clay, fabric) and intangible (words, sounds, memories, emotions, ideas) into something new, such as sculpture, living history theater, musical performances, stories, paintings, dance, quilts, or poems. The process of creating, as well as the art that is created, transforms the participants and the people around them: other participants, family members, professional caregivers, and everyone who experiences the art.

Enhanced quality of life is a distinctive benefit of participation in the arts. Quality of life has many components. Aristotle used the term eudaimonia, often translated as happiness. For most of us, quality of life is synonymous with well-being. The arts are known to enhance the quality of life in different but parallel ways for communities and for individuals.

COMMUNITY...Florida’s parks have become an integral component to economic development as well as an investment in the arts and cultural growth within our communities. Parks provide the setting for social events large and small where people can connect with each other, and participate in classes and group activities for personal enrichment. Parks also provide an investment in infrastructure needed to accommodate revenue generating sporting events and tourism, benefiting the local economy and community as a whole....It Starts in Parks!
