I must start out by thanking everyone who helped with this

year’s awards ceremony. I can’t begin to mention all the names of those that gave their time and effort to ensure that our biggest event of the year was a success. This was the first time ever trying something

like this and like anything else that is new and different there comes a lot of uncertainty. I think our awards committee showed that no task is too big and with a great organizer and team work great things can happen. I believe everyone really enjoyed the new format with a lot of positive comments and suggestions. I know it was nice being done before six o’clock, that’s got to be a first. We also have recognized items that need improving and have already begun to make those necessary steps to insure next year’s event will be even bigger and better. I also want to thank John Penton and Randy Hawkins for visiting this year’s ceremony. Mr. Penton was on stage bringing encouragement and wisdom while presenting autographed helmets to our K.O.W winners. Hopefully most of you have seen the movie about John Penton and the beginning of this off road icon. If not you should make the time to experience the way it used to be and how far the off road community has come thanks to racers and enthusiast like John. Well done Mr. Penton. Another guy that we almost worked to death with the live on stage interviews was Randy Hawkins. I’ve known Randy for many years and recently have had the pleasure of seeing him again at the GNCC races this past year where he heads up the Am Pro Yamaha team. From his multi Enduro and GNCC championships to his showing up at the 24 hour challenge race at Perry

Mountain, we couldn’t have asked for more of a true off road representative. He was amazed at the size of our organization and was really impressed on the overall experience of our ceremony. Another impressive first time event was the August magazine. Although it was on line before the printed version hit the mail boxes, it was great to see all the stories and content submitted by our members. This can only get better with everyone’s participation and positive outlook on your magazine, so keep those pictures and stories coming.In closing I would like to mention a little thing that made me smile. I think about how lucky we all are to have an organization like we have that promotes and produces friendships that we all can be proud of. I’m not going to mention any names, but I received a thank you card a couple weeks ago about something I helped out with a while ago. I didn’t think anything about it, actually I had forgot about it but apparently he didn’t. The card I received was a hand written personal thank you from a person that I’ve known and raced with for many years. Yeah, we see each other at the races and stay in contact with each other during the off time, but it was really the words and thoughts he expressed that made me feel that even though were competitors sometimes, the friendship and respect we both have for each other are very high on our lists. As racers, off road riders and just general dirt bike people, make friends and memories that will last a life time and be proud of it.Thank YouRandy FaulFTR President

Hi fellow MX riders, Well it has been a

tough year trying to keep the Motocross series. I have worked with the Executive Commitee to help us find a way to have an ambulance at all our events. The EC has been very supportive of

the MX program. We have also made contact with another series in the state with hopes of hosting

dual sanctioned events to help with our situation. However we still have a few issues to solve and we are optimistic that we will be able to reactivate MX series. So keep your hopes up and we will keep you informed. Keep up with your practice program and think about the FTR gate dropping at our 2015/2016 MX Season.

“JUST THINKING”Dear FTR Family,

I hope you were able to make it to the 2014-2015 Florida Trial Riders

Awards Expo. Was it different? Yes, but many of the people I spoke with liked it. Once I arrived folks were already talking about ways to improve the event. The “Expo Committee” are hard at work thinking about adjustments for next year and I think

that it’s going to be pretty cool. Having said that, I want to extend a huge thanks to all the volunteers that helped make this past event possible. I was there very early Saturday morning and the place was already full of busy people. I especially want to say thank you to Ellen Fleming for leading the charge. Great job Ellen! One of the booths that was of special interests to me was the military booth hosted by MOTS (Manasota Operation Troop Support). I want to say thank you to Kelly Dietz for coming over from Sarasota and organizing the collection of items for our military men and women. It was not too long ago that we all stood together cheering on friends and family as they made their laps. But, like so many others, life brings about changes and people move on. Nevertheless, the impact of the Dietz’s Family within the Florida Trail Rider organization was genuine and precious. Thanks Kelly! In closing, let me leave you with this thought. One day this past summer I was channel surfing on the radio when I came

across a woman speaking. I did not recognize her at first but the conversation caught my attention. As I listened, I figured out that she was Elizabeth Elliot, the wife of Jim Elliot. Who is he? He was an evangelical Christian who was one of five missionaries killed while participating in Operation Auca, an attempt to evangelize the Huaorani people of Ecuador. His life story is amazing (Google him). Nevertheless, getting back to his wife’s interview, she made an incredible 14 word statement that has been haunting me and it goes like this: “If He (God), is not worth living for, then He is not worth dying for.” My friend, that is a pretty sobering statement. Did you know that everyone serves a god? Did you also know that the gods of today come in all shapes and sizes (example: money, celebrities, hobbies, possessions, etc.) and the people serve and give themselves to their god daily. Let me ask you two questions. Is the god you serve, worth living for? Yes or no. Is the god you serve worth dying for? Yes or no. If you cannot say yes to both questions let me challenge you to consider serving a different god. I love the God I serve and the God I serve loves me. He feels the same way about you. Are you willing to serve Him?

The boot industry has grown tremendously over the past decade

or so. A lot of brands see a hot market to sell boots, but are companies focusing on improving sales instead of keeping the riders safe? After being a multi-year Alpinestars user I realized I needed a change. Gaerne was the top

of my list when it came to finding the boot for me. I’ve had the same pair of Gaerne SG12 boots since April, 2014. I’m very satisfied with them and they are, by far, my favorite set of boots that have protected my feet.

The Looks:The Gaerne SG12’s look amazing. They have 6 Color waves you can choose from. I’m original so I always get plain white. They also have Black, White/Orange, White/Green, White/Red, and White/Blue/Red. You can also buy different colored straps and the big “G” shin plate which gives you more options for customizing your boot.

The new 2015 Gaerne SG12 has a ribbed looking rubber on the toes for design that also helps you grip the shifter better.The Feel:Not only do these boots look amazing, but they are really comfortable as well. For myself, I felt like I had to have a short break in session for these boots. I’ve heard stories on how riders put them in warm bath water but I personally have never tried that method. It took o nly one practice “warm up” moto and these boots felt comfortable.

The Performance:If you are an aggressive rider that is known to be hard on boots, the SG12 is the boot for you. These are extremely well built durable boots. I’ve had the same pair for exactly 15 months and they are just now getting worn out. I practice and race two series with the same set. All I do is hand wash them after every ride. The buckles are very well built and are super easy to latch/unlatch but I have never had a buckle fail while riding. The soles are in mint condition and I still have both steel toe caps to protect my toes. Nothing negative to say about the performance.

What I Really Think?All in all, taking into consideration that some boots aren’t for some people, the Gaerne SG12 is a great racer boot! It might not be the best trail riding boot but for the durability, style, and protection that it offers the SG12 has the price tag that seems to fit. You won’t have to search to hard to grab a pair of Gaerne SG12 boots for under $600.

How about that banquet? Wow, that was just awesome. From the new format, to having the guest appearance of Mr. John Penton and his son Jack, to the outstanding vendors, it was a great time! I want to personally thank each member of the banquet committee for all of their hard work and also to all of our members who took the time to come celebrate with us for the weekend.

It was wonderful to see everyone again and to chat with lots of our extended family. If any of you have comments, concerns or any feedback about the banquet we would greatly appreciate it. Remember this organization is all about our members and we want to make it the best possible experience for everyone. So I’ll ask again, who’s ready for the new season? I know I am! We’ve definitely been getting our fair share of rain across the state but hopefully with any luck the race properties will dry up nicely and we will have a fantastic season. I know lots of clubs have already started putting in lots of work, cutting trail and prepping for their event; that’s some serious dedication especially in this heat of the summer. I hate to

sound like a broken record but Florida Trail Riders wouldn’t be what it is without all the amazing people we have. I’m so very thankful to be part of such a great organization and I can’t imagine my life without it. If you know someone who might be interested in trying out off-road racing or just riding in general, I encourage you to bring them out to an event. Once again if you have any questions or thoughts about anything regarding the organization, please don’t hesitate contacting/talking with me or any member of the Executive Committee or the Board of Directors. TAKING RIDER SAFETY INTO THE FUTURE

The 2015-2016 Season Is Here!FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS

With the FTR 2015 -2016 Hare Scramble season

here, if you haven’t already done so, it’s time to pull your bike out of the trailer and wash it, maybe change the oil and put in a clean air filter. By the time you read this in print you will have found out that the first race was hot. Not only should your machine be ready but your body should be too. For tips on getting ready

for race season please refer to the article in the August magazine – Are you race ready?As technology improves so should the technology related to the safety of our riders. Over the summer our goal was to come up with a way that we could have more prudent information available to us immediately when encountering an injured racer. We knew what we wanted but how to accomplish it was another story. We also wanted to make sure that the information provided by the racer was safe, secure and accessible only to those that need it. Along comes Johnathan Lonsdale, a very tech savvy peewee A dad. Johnathan called me to see what exactly we wanted to accomplish and in short order had the answers. A huge THANK YOU to him for his help with this endeavor. This is how it works. This is completely VOLUNTARY. Available to you we have a Racer Information Sheet. The amount and detail of information provided is completely up to the racer and or the parents. Once you fill out the racer information sheet, a member of the team will input data onto a Radio Frequency Identifacation tag or RFID tag. The RFID tag will then be attached to the helmet by utilizing a 3M adhesive backing. So what is a RFID tag you ask? It’s a microchip with an attached radio antenna mounted on a substrate. It will allow us to put your information on the microchip and be able to access it in seconds without cell or Wi-Fi service. It also

allows us to password protect it so that your information is safe and secure. We hope to have three dedicated RFID readers; on the rhino, myself and a spare. We plan to have the tags show a star of life symbol with FTR above it for easy locating. It will also be requested that everyone places them on the

back of the helmet in the center just above your goggle strap(this way it does not interfere with any camera mounts etc). The RFID tag has many positives.

• We can provide a rider with as many tags as they have helmets.

• Weather is not a factor. • The information is on the RFID tag so it is always with you, not in a cloud or on a laptop . • The RFID tags will be password protected. • There will be no cost to the racer as necessary funds have come from member donations to the Safety Team. • They are easily replaced if damaged. • They are very small and weigh almost nothing. • Information can be updated easily. • We will be able to provide new members with them at any time. So here is the process, short and sweet:Fill out the Racer Information Sheet available at any race or via email or right here in this magazine.Return the form to us.Receive your RFID tag or tags and attach it to your helmet.Note: For those that filled out the form at the banquet, we will have your tags ready at the first race. If you fill out a form at a race, your tag will be available at the next race. If you email us your form as long as it isn’t the week of the race you should be able to pick it up at the next race. We are looking forward to this venture as we feel it will help us better help you in that time of need. Ride fast, ride safe, and if a tree gets in your way turn!

Mini riders are always in a state of flux; they work

hard at all levels to improve their speed.Some will reach a level to where they become very aggressive, charge hard pushing their individual limits to higher levels. When the rider starts experiencing

the twisting of the fork tubes without crashing, changing the upper and lower clamps is a must. A genuine problem that needs to be addressed with the KTM 85 and particularly the KTM 105 Super Mini stock fork clamps. The fork tubes twist in the clamps and in some cases slide up and hit the handle bars even when properly torque (20Nm torque, top and bottom per-KTM) without the rider unloading/crashing.The first knee jerk reaction is to over torque the pinch bolts. This will create another source for

friction preventing the forks from providing smooth low speed action as well as wearing out the fork bushings that then will lead to leaky fork seals.In KTM’sOptional Hard PartsCatalog there can be founda replacement/improvement upper and lower clamp that will

keep the twisting to a minimum. The KTM Upper and Lower optional clamp is a really cool anodized orange, which adds that cool look. Still with a 135lb aggressive rider the clamps twist somewhat at 20Nm’s of torque. The pinch bolts are traditionally set on the back side of the clamps just like the stock clamps would be. The anodizing helps somewhat to harden the aluminum to provide better grip to hold the tube. The handle bar mount is adjustable;

however the KTM 105 has a slight bit more vibration than the 85 that is noticed by the rider, even with a balanced crank shaft. The KTM Hard Part Optional clamps do not have rubber mounted bar mounts to help fend the “buzz” in the bars.And there are the traditional two positions bar mount location for moving the bars up for the taller rider. The KTM RACE READY Optional Hard Part is definitely a huge and welcomed improvementover the stock clamps.There is an absolute end all to the twisting of your fork tubes, and it will come from Nihilo’s X-Clamp. This is an outstanding work of art. Nihilo’s X-Clamp sethas reversed the two pinch bolts; brings the top bolt to the front, leaving the bottom bolt to the rear. The dual opposing pinch bolts (X-Clamp) work together to lock the fork tube into place. The fork tubes stay put and will not move.The X-Clamp system works so well, inserting the fork tubes becomes a little challenge, they just do not slide in anymore, and even with the pinch bolts loose, they for sure will not slide out and hit the floor. Another welcomed improvement for the rider… you will find handle bar dampening system like you will find on the full size race bike. The isolator mounts adds rider comfort, which allows the rider to push harder longer helping to minimize arm pump, better circulation in the forearms, less fatigue in the hands. The isolators provide a level of comfort for those 90 minute or longer races. The damping does not add unwanted flex to the bars, maintaining stability and control for the rider.

I was reminded by Sheryl Crow’s song “A Change Would Do You Good” and that’s just what FTR needed. Are you singing the song yet? Change is scary but most times it is positive and you learn and get better

from it. I believe this year’s awards presentation did just that. The change did FTR GOOD! We have a lot we can improve on to do better but by far it was a one of the best FTR events ever. When you have industry idols like Randy Hawkins along with John and Jack Penton tell you that this is by far one of the best awards presentation they have been too you know we are heading in the right direction. While working the EXPO this year,

I was on my way back stage to get more pictures of people with their trophies. Jesse stopped me and asked me if he could use my camera. No problem, I let kids use my camera often. We can always use more

photobrappers and might as well start them early. Still trying to go back stage to take pictures with my phone, he stopped me again and asked where am I am going? He then got a grin on his face and I heard Kim announce my name. What? No, I do not deserve this. My son does not race. What? Seems like I was shoved up the stairs. Kim gave me a big hug, not sure what she was saying but I told her don’t let go. No public speaking. She turned me around and all I saw was the lights and the microphone. All I could get out was “Thank you everybody”. Coming off stage I thought Randy and Ellen were going to carry me back up there. Begging finally got me out of it. I do not do what it is that a Pit Mom does for fame or attention, I do it for the love of the sport that I have been part of since birth. I do it for the love of being with family, friends and strangers at the track, the smell of exhaust, and the sound of the bikes. My happy place at Lamaze class was Gatorback in the morning! Thank you to all who congratulated me and explained to me why I was chosen and reminded me what I do at the races. A Pit Mom or Dad is being there for others. It’s picking up bikes off of people or helping them out of the mud. Its

setting up a water stand with your friends for those who are in desperate need of hydration and making sure they are ok. Do you remember Maxville last year.. HOT! It’s running from the Gatorback at the MX track, stopping at the first person you know who gives you goggles for a rider (CH) and then drives you to the scoring chicane. (Thank you Billy Cassidy) It is helping anyone who needs it no matter what brand of bike or quad, what kind of suspension, or who they are. It is being there whenever and where ever they need it. It is about looking like a fool in the woods (Please do not share those go pro moments) to snap those who are tired out of their thought of “UGH.. how many more laps” and having them think “this crazy women out here has faith in me”. It’s those encouraging words to those who think they can not finish that last lap and they come back in and Thank you for pushing them to do that last lap. Riders tell me how much my “cray cray” helped them. Dig deep FTR riders. The biggest advise I give the most is, NEVER GIVE UP. You have no idea what is going on ahead of you. There could have been a bike that broke or a pile up. Every corner is a new view. Keep your eyes open, relax and own it. This quote, albeit slightly modified, defines what sportsmanship is all about. This also defines what Bryce Koster is all about. Back in December Bryce gave up a solid finish in his own class to help a downed rider, Ron Commo. “So it was the last lap of the race and it was super muddy and slick. I passed Bryce and shortly after my rear wheel spun on some roots and hit the base of a tree sending me slamming to the ground and the swingarm hit me in the face. I had blacked out for a few seconds and when I woke up I was pinned under the bike with the sprocket on my

helmet and I couldn’t lift it. Bryce stopped and lifted it off of me; there was no way I was doing it myself. Im super appreciative that he stopped even though he was racing and was doing the best he had done all year. A big THANK YOU goes out to everybody that

came out to support the troops during the Awards Expo. This Troop drive was sponsored by the Manasota Operation Troop

Support(MOTS) group headed by Kellie Walker Dietz. We raised $425.00 and there was over 200 pounds of goodies which included socks, batteries, snacks, hygiene products, etc. MOTS is a non profit organization that sends care packages to deployed troops. Kellie was introduced to them while her son Paul was deployed to Iraq a few years ago and she has been volunteering ever since. MOTS has packing parties where they prepare the boxes for shipping once a month and they do different fund raisers throughout the year to raise money for postage. MOTS also helps veterans find jobs, repair cars and houses, and get food if needed. For those service men and women that are deployed MOTS is right there for the stateside spouses. Kellie says, “ I was involved for over 30 years with Florida Trail Riders and really enjoyed coming back and seeing

some of my FTR family, meeting some new members and seeing some of the kids that have grown so much. The FTR bond does not break! I’m so glad that my boys got to grow up in such an awesome club. Two of them grew up to become soldiers and one a fireman and they dearly miss racing; only time will tell when they will be back! And how grateful MOTS and myself are to Jack and Diane Oneill for the donation of the GoPro!!!!!!!! They are awesome folks!” Congratulations to Terry Myers who took home a very special prize. Terry won the American flag that was carried for four months by FTR’s Ryan Snodgrass while he was deployed with the 2nd Ranger Battalion and flown over Bagram Airfield in Afghanistan. How did you get into motorcycling?Well I think a lot of people have different ways of getting into bikes you now most of the time it’s from friends or family. For me, I grew up on my grandfather’s farm with three or four of my cousins and they rode and I had some uncles that rode but nobody really raced at all. I think we all started riding dirt bikes just

for the fun of it. I never dreamed of being a racer. I never could’ve dreamed of the career I ended up with or even having a job in the industry and even still being involved with the industry. So it goes back to riding dirt bikes for the fun of it at a local level, not even a racer, just riding. Racing came later when I got invited by some friends. It was just one of those things. Kind of like On Any Sunday, just get your dirt bike and ride.Why did you decide to go the off-road route instead of motocross or supercross like so many other guys did?You know, I think how it played out for me is that I never really rode that much motocross, I just rode on a farm and stuff like that. Really what happened was I had a local guy that was riding and he invited me to go to a race; it was an enduro. I never knew anything about that. About that time I was like the big fish in a small pond. I was faster and better than all of my cousins on our own little track that we built with shovels and whatever you could do. So I went to that enduro thinking “ Ok this should be no big deal. I should be able to win this thing first time out.” Well I rode the 125C class, which was probably the lowest class back then. Out of six guys I finished sixth. I got smoked! At that point I thought, “I know I can do better than this” and I just focused on that side of riding. If that guy would have taken me to race motocross and the same thing happened I might have been a motocrosser. It just happened to be my path to the off-road side and I wouldn’t go back and change it because it’s been a wonderful ride for me.

Did you have a favorite racer or a special memory from early in your career?When I first started riding dirt bikes I didn’t really follow anybody. I never really had a bike hero like the Bob Hannah’s or the Dick Burleson’s. It’s not that I didn’t respect them, I just didn’t know anybody. I was just stuck in my world of riding my dirt bike and it really never dawned on me. Probably, one of the things that stuck out the most in my mind, once I became a racer and my results started coming, was that I was finally able to overall our local race that was put on by the Greenville Enduro Riders called The Little Brown Jug. For me, to win that event, as a local club, and to overall it, that stuck out as one of my most memorable events. Because it was so memorable, I really worked hard at it to retire the jug. To retire it you have to win three years in a row. I ended up retiring it twice. It’s not the nationals it’s the local stuff, being around people you grew up with and to be able to win that event, that’s highlight of my career. You don’t have to have a national event to have a highlight of your career. I’m fairly new to off-road riding and coming from a road racing background I can say it’s a whole different animal riding a dirt bike. I’ve said it before but I have a ton of respect for all of our FTR riders whether they finish first or dead last. Just finishing a race is hard and a accomplishment in itself.A lot of people don’t realize just how difficult it is, and not taking anything away from a motocross race, but an off-road race, a hare scramble or an enduro is different. You don’t have someone cheering you at every corner to kind of keep you pumped up. You really have to dig deep down inside because you’re out there and you feel like your completely alone. Sometimes there’s not another bike around you, there’s nobody cheering you on. It really takes a lot of heart and I agree with you that this off-road stuff is really a lot more difficult than people think. It’s just you and your bike out there.What was your favorite bike that you’ve ridden in your career?My favorite bike to ride is a 125. Not so much a Suzuki or Yamaha or whatever just a 125. I always rode them and they are so much fun. So that’s my favorite bike to ride. If you did have to add bike brands to it, the YZ125 and the

What a great ambassador to the dirt bike industry. I was able to catch up with him at the end of a long Awards Expo and, as usual, he graciously had some time for me to answer a few questions.

Yamaha 250 four strokes have been the favorite bikes in my career.How important do you think an organization like the Florida Trail Riders is to the off-road industry?Organizations, I think, are critical. I really try to tell the kids this. If you don’t have organizations like FTR to put events on you have nothing. Putting an event on... it looks easy. The months that volunteers put into getting the landowners on board, to get all of the permits, to cutting the trails to have that one event is tremendous. To not have strong organizations like FTR, or other organizations across the country, I would have never got to achieve my goals and on top of that we wouldn’t even be racing. This is the grass roots. This is where bikes are sold. This is where things are done. If we didn’t have strong organizations, realistically, the dirt bike industry, at least on the racing side, would go away. We might still have trail riding, but it is critical. That’s my point of coming here and helping FTR in any way possible because I know how important it is to have a strong organization. You’re the manager and owner of the N-Fab Am Pro Yamaha Racing team. Give us a little run down of how that works.I am the factory effort for Yamaha on the bike and quad side. Yamaha really likes the idea of dealing with one person instead of having a lot of other racers under their flag. I make the decisions with Yamaha, we pick the riders and I take it and run with it. It makes it easier for them. So, realistically, if you come to the states and you ride a factory Yamaha, quad or bike, you come to my program. The GNCC series is tough this year. There’s a lot of competition on the bike side and your riders are doing pretty well but your quad guys are tearing it up. Can you tell us a little about that?You know, once you’ve stepped into that level it’s mental. We have a very young team this year. We’ve got Grant Baylor coming over and Daniel Milner came from Australia and now Jordan Ashburn is kind of my older guy. By saying he’s my older guy, he’s like twenty three or twenty four. We’re a young team and Paul Whibley, who was my leader, decided it was time to move on. So we structured the team feeling we have some of the best younger kids coming up. Yes, we’d like to win championships but we always need to have a good base. On the bike side, we’re growing there. Now switch gears to the quad side we’re really set there with Walker Fowler as one of the lead guys, as a champion, and Cole Richardson is probably the next level below Walker

on the quad. I really established my quad team as always having that guy that can chase for a championship. We’re probably a year behind on the bike side but I really look forward to next year. My guys will be starting that stair step into championship levels on the bike side. I’m very proud of my guys. They’re doing an awesome job and I’m very proud of the fact that Yamaha has committed to us for another year.It seems like Yamaha is putting a real effort into the off-road market. Can you share anything that you might know that we don’t?You know, the thing about Yamaha I’m very proud of, because I’ve worked with them for eighteen years now, is that Yamaha is the only Japanese company right now I see stepping up into the off-road side. They’re very calculated in what they want to do. They were really wanting to build a bike and not spinning off another model but building a new platform bike. Well that takes a lot of time and a lot of money. I kept explaining to them, “you guys have a great bike with the YZ and with some small changes we can spin off this great bike and end up with two other bikes.” This year that’s really what they have done. They really stepped it up and went from the YZ to the FX and WR. You can see it was very good for Yamaha and it really showed them how well the off-road market can be and now they’ve come out with the two stroke 250X. That shows me the commitment, as a racer and as a company, that Yamaha has.What do you like to do, assuming you have spare time, outside of motorcycling? Well, I have twin daughters that are ten years old and a son that’s eight so a lot of my enjoyment right now is seeing stuff through their eyes. I really enjoy that. Yes all of them ride dirt bikes and we ride quads. We’re into that because that’s what I do but that’s their choice and we have a lot of fun with it. Whenever I do have the time I also like to golf, hunt, fish and stuff like that. I really enjoy spending time as a family. Being in the motorcycling industry it keeps me young. I go and ride stand up jet ski’s with my riders that are eighteen to twenty five years old and have a blast doing that. I just really enjoy the opportunity to get to do things like that and still have the free time with my family. A lot of things I didn’t get to do when I was a factory racer.Thanks a lot for your time Randy, I really appreciate it. “Our family has been a part of FTR since 2007. Bob actually raced some FTR enduros way back in

the early 80’s but moved on to race swamp buggies until he brought us all back to FTR as a family. Of our five children, four have been FTR members, and one is an honorary FTR member and favorite pit crew member of his siblings. When we started racing as a family Jackson was still in diapers. I remember changing him on the wheel well of the open trailer at an FTR race. Our oldest, Brian, was in middle school. Jeffrey, our son who has autism and is unable to ride on his own, was about the age Jackson is now. Our girls, Danielle and Bryanne (Bee), were still in elementary school. Having a weekend activity that all of our children, at such a wide age spread, enjoyed together was a real blessing. This sport of off-road racing has been the venue of more fun family memories than I ever could have imagined when it all began. It is a way of life and fond memories for our younger children, as well as a fun way to reconnect for their older siblings.” In addition to racing the Parks’ kids keep busy with lots of other activities. Bee made the Rockledge High volleyball team, is on track to start college course next year as a 10th grader, maintains a perfect 4.0 unweighted GPA, and can keep up with the most proficient social networking teens out there. She plans to play high school soccer as well as club volleyball when the school season ends. Jackson hasn’t met a sport he doesn’t love. He plays baseball, basketball, soccer, and runs cross country. He is also in his

5th year as a Cub Scout and will be crossing over to Boy Scouts early next year. Jackson also loves music. He takes private lessons for the piano and guitar as well as school classes in violin. One would think racing two series and keeping up with all the other extra curriculars the Parks’ kids have going would be a full time job, but Mom also works as a 3rd grade teacher. “I also attend cross county running camp with Jackson in order to train for the 1/2 marathon. I’m planning to check off the bucket list in November.” Dad is currently working out of state but gets to spend long weekends home. Those weekends include a lot of garage time to keep the team rolling. When he’s not wrenching, he’s attending various sporting events for the kids or taking them all riding for fun. Even with the full schedule this FTR family had they still had a productive race season last year. Jackson raced his way to a championship in the 65C class on his bike and also raced his quad finishing 8th overall in Quad Super Pee Wee A.Bryanne had a strong third place overall in Quad Junior and Mom Shannon had a respectable fourth place finish in Women’s Vet. As well as the FTR schedule, the Parks familyalso finds the time to race the GNCC series. It’s families like this that makes the Florida Trail Riders and the entire sport of off-road racing special. It’s true that“A family that rides together stays together.”

Danielle Hennessy, daughter of Shannon Parks, is pictured with her poster used during a presentation of findings from an experiment she worked on at Scripts. Scripts is a research laboratory next to FAU’s Honors College where Danielle has been interning. Danielle was awarded an FTR scholarship in 2013 and 2014 and has used these funds to help support her

education at the Honor’s College in Jupiter, FL. She was able to race the first year she was away at school and earn the Quad 400 championship but after adding the internship to her schedule, she was unable to compete last season. Danielle is very grateful to FTR for the scholarships which have helped her pursue her education. She has just begun her Jr. year.

Minutes of August 8, 2015 FTR General Membership Meeting

Hilton Daytona Beach Oceanfront Resort, Daytona Beach, Florida

Meeting called to order at 9:38AM by President Randy Faul

Roll call conducted – 28 current members present. The President noted that a quorum was present.

Reports of Officers:

The President noted that it was his intent to keep the meeting short and to the point so that members could move on to enjoy the Awards Expo across the street in the Ocean Center. The President recognized the out-standing effort provided by Ellen Fleming who has stepped up to manage the Awards Expo. The President asked the membership to help out at the Awards Expo, and to get more involved in the operation of FTR.

The President introduced the new Business Manager, Tiffany St. John, who was attending the meeting. He also recognized Dave Dekmar, the new Magazine Editor, and announced that a new magazine has been published.

The Treasurer presented a summary of FTR financial status. A package of financial reports is provided to all Board of Directors and is available to all FTR members. A motion was made, seconded and passed by unanimous vote to accept the Treasurer’s financial report.

In the interest of conducting a short meeting, no other officer reports were presented.

Old Business:

Motion made and seconded to approve the minutes of the August 2, 2014 General Membership meeting. Passed by unanimous vote.

New Business:

Motion made and seconded to approve the following change to FTR Bylaws, Article XV – Bylaws, Section IV, Ap-proval of Expenditures, Paragraph C currently reads: “Board of Directors have to approve expenditures $2500 and above”. Change to read: “Board of Directors must approve expenditures over $2500. The Executive Commit-tee may submit this request for approval to the Board of Directors at a regularly scheduled Board of Directors meeting, or may submit the request for approval to the Board of Directors by electronic means, and obtain ap-proval by electronic means.” This change has been approved on first and second reading at two previous Board of Directors meetings. Motion passed by 24 to 0 vote of the General Membership meeting.

Motion made and seconded to approve the following change to FTR Bylaws, Chapter I, Article XIII -4, Chapter I, Article XIII-2, Article XIV-C-3e, Article XIV-E-1, and Article XIV-F-1b. The changes allow notice of runoff elections, notice of proposed constitutional amendments, publication of event results and competition standings, notice of General FTR Sanction Meeting, and notice of proposed rule changes to be published on the FTR website rather than in the FTR magazine (see attached description of the specific wording of the proposed change).This change previously has been approved on first and second reading at two previous Board of Directors meetings. Motion passed by 26 to 0 vote of the General Membership meeting.

Pit riding and poor behavior on the part of some participants and spectators at hare scrambles events was discussed. The President and Hare Scrambles Chair referred this issue to the Hare Scrambles Committee with instructions to take appropriate action to resolve this problem.

Motion made, seconded and passed by unanimous vote to approve the use of a 12x18 storage building (non-climate controlled) on the Business Manager’s property instead of renting an off-site commercial storage unit. The Business Manager will provide insurance to cover cost of contents. Similar commercial units rent for approxi-mately $100 per month (including content insurance). FTR will pay the Business Manager $100 per month for the use of the on-site storage unit.

Motion made, seconded and passed by unanimous vote to approve the reimbursement of $196.70 in receipted expenses related to the relocation of stored FTR equipment and supplies from the previous storage facility to the new storage facility.

Discussion about the responsibility for monitoring the storage, maintenance, transportation and use of the FTR enduro scoring trailer. Motion made, seconded and passed by unanimous vote to assign interim responsibility to the Enduro Chair (Allen Pearce) until such time as he can find someone to take on the responsibility for the remainder of the 2015-2016 enduro competition series.

The Hare Scrambles Chair reported on his efforts to make arrangements for a contingency program for the 2015-2016 hare scrambles competition series. Motion made, seconded and approved by unanimous vote to partici-pate in the Western Power Sports/Fly Racing contingency program.

Florida Trail Riders May 30, 2015

Proposal presented by William Toreki to FTR BOD.

Topic: Updating FTR RuleBook to be consistent with modern technology.

Synopsis: Current rules require proposed rule changes to be published in the FTR magazine prior to final vote. It would be more efficient and cost-effective to require publication on the official FTR website instead of the magazine. Publication and postage costs would be reduced, and information can be more readily ex-changed.

The following changes to the FTR RuleBook are proposed:

Chapter I - Article IX - 4: Current: 4. In the event of a tie, a run-off will be held. The individuals with the 2 highest vote counts will be placed on an official ballot inserted into the FTR magazine in the subsequent month and on the FTR website.
