I’m so glad the 2015-2016 season has finally gotten under way. I’m

sure there’s been a lot of anxious FTR members just chomping at the bit to get back to racing and get dirty. Was Gatorback dirty enough for you? I

couldn’t make it to that event but I’ve heard nothing but great words about what an awesome job the Big Scrub Trail Riders did at putting on a great show despite the weather set backs. At the time I’m writing this the Bartow HS just wrapped up. I hope everybody had a great race and for those of you that had a get off, heal up quick so you can get back at it. There will be a full recap and photospread in the November issue of your FTR Magazine.Speaking of the magazine, this is my third issue and I’m kind of finding my groove. I welcome feedback and ideas so send them in. Keep in mind, if you’re sending in photos, articles, or any other information please have them to me by the 20th of each month.I can’t believe I’m saying this but Thanksgiving is right around the corner and, with that being said, Dorothy and I would like to request that you all send in a short writing of what you’re thankful for; you can include a picture if you’d like. These will be featured in the Nov.issue. Send them to [email protected]. One more request. Who wants to be my go to person for Quad information? I’m not a Quad guy but that doesn’t mean I don’t want to include you all. I need some help with this one.A sincere Thank You to everybody that’s contributed to the magazine so far, you know who you are. I couldn’t do this without you all. Ride SafeDave

EZ SAYS

Well we are finally back at it, race season is officially a go!

I’m glad we were able to have a good kick off with the Gatorback hare scramble considering the weather has been everything but dry. Rain is a great thing for the land but not so great for our parking areas. But

nevertheless, it was absolutely wonderful to spend time with all of our extended family again and be able to do what we all love most, racing our motorcycles. I’d like to give a huge thank you and shoutout to Big Scrub Trail Riders. They put together an awesome trail especially considering there was no use of the MX or the SX track. And for adjusting the continual changing conditions of the pre-existing trail. Let’s keep pushing for more great races this season, and I look forward to seeing everyone out there!

As you read this we will have completed our first event of the new season. But first and

foremost, we all hated to hear the news about the River City event having to be postponed. That was a hard call and I know they were all ready for the FTR family to come rolling in. A

lot of times we question calls like this as it’s sometimes hard to envision being too wet to have a race. There’s a lot to consider when deciding to go with the event or not; most important is the parking. With some of the rigs rolling into our events these days you just don’t drive into wet or soggy ground and if you can’t park them you can’t unload them. Then you must consider the aftermath of a mud race or a course that is under water. Consideration for the property owner is a must and how we leave his property is a reflection on us. Nothing will tear up a piece of property worse than having 600 plus bikes and quads racing through the mud and water. So with all this being said, River City made the right call. With Gatorback now being our first event, everyone was ready and eager to start the season no matter what. We were looking at the weather mid week and started holding our breath. Race weekend was finally here and guess what, the rains came. My hats off to Allen and the Big Scrub Trail Riders crew. They reacted most effectively and turned a bad situation on Saturday morning into a rideable fun course by mid afternoon with only a small delay because of lightning. Then it rained again, turning what they had changed into more challenging decisions on what to use and what not to. After an hour delay for rerouting on Sunday morning, things got underway and the racing started. The sun and wind helped with the course conditions on Sunday as we had a great day of racing. Great job Big Scrub! With the CFTR event next and SADRA coming in

right after them, I’m hoping we get lucky with the weather and the sunshine gods will shine on us. SADRA has new property this year as we move a little south right next to Florida Tracks and Trails.Speaking of FTT, for those of you that haven’t checked this place out, you really need to take a weekend and take the family. Great, friendly people are what you will notice as soon as you drive in. Beach, trails, paintball and one of the biggest motocross tracks in Florida. In fact, there’s four tracks, including one for the peewees. In closing, I would like to ask that we keep ourselves in check with our pit riding and traversing through the pits. I’m bringing this to your attention now as we move forward into our season. FTR doesn’t want to make this an issue, but if it gets out of hand, abused or the envelope is being pushed, we will step in and make some drastic decisions. Enough said on this. Those of you that attended the Gatorback event witnessed what hard work, dedication; training and making good decisions can lead to with the results produced by one of our A200 riders, Jesse Ansley. I say this to encourage our youth and up and coming riders to have a goal and a vision to work towards as they grow and mature into adults. These basic items are the ground work to becoming successful in doing anything in life. Parents, grandparents and friends, take the time with our youth to not just tell them, but show them the right way to do things and give them encouragement to succeed in anything they desire. Racing is a great foundation to build a relationship with your child. Watch them grow, perform, give encouragement and be proud of them. Thanks for your support,Randy Faul

“Run the race with endurance, the course that has been laid out for you” (Hebrews 12:1).

Dear FTR Family,Well the season is off and

running or should I say off and flowing. What an incredible weekend for our season opener. The rain woke me up, pecking on my RV roof around 2:00 am Saturday morning. At least I think that’s what time it was when I attempted to open

my eyes. I do remember saying to my wife, “Oh no. It’s raining.” I think I also recall breathing a prayer that went something like this: “Make it short Lord. We don’t need much of this.” And the Lord answered my prayer. We got up that morning to over-cast clouds and a promised day of... No Dust!Though the Pee Wee course did require some re-routing, everyone was going to survive and we were going to have a good, albeit a little sloppy, day. Little did we know that the 2:00 AM shower was only the introduction to the Off-Road Racing Opera that was about to let loose. At the rider’s meeting for the Mini’s race, Uncle Bill and I were examining the radar and I was announcing contingency plans to the parents should this race go in the toilet. Good move on the part of our FTR refs for pre-planning because into the toilet it did go. After about an hour of racing the lightning shut us down and the young racers were being funneled off the course.Did the fat lady sing? Indeed she did! During the 2:00 PM Saturday race, my son Austin, who was competing in that time slot said, “The water coming down the hills was like a raging river.” But that event was not over yet. As she moved into place, took a deep breath, and belted out her last high note, I was at the chicane holding onto the easy-ups as the high winds and rain come blowing down upon us. Austin, who was having an enjoyable (yet challenging) ride, was swallowed up by a large water hole where he and the bike went completely under water. Stick a fork in it, the bike was done! …And so was most of the rain.During the Quad Race, the last event of the day, the rain

eventually moved from a drizzle to nothing. Yet this event was not without its casualties too. Many took one lap and came off. For some, one lap was all they had time for. While others hung in there for all the punishment that they and their machine could handle. The big question on everyone’s mind was, “What will Sunday morning look like?” Are we in for more of the same? The day began by making the decision to move both races back one hour. Smart idea! This provided the opportunity for reroutes and changes. When the racing began, the sun was peeking through the clouds and the wind was blowing. Before long it was an absolutely beautiful day. With each lap the course became drier. By the time of the second race the riders had to smile and say, “Wow, that is nice!”I want to say thank you to the Big Scrub Dirt Riders for their hard work. This course was collecting a large volume of water at a high rate of speed. On Saturday, they worked tirelessly in order to at least make the event tolerable. I have been there, done that, and got the tee-shirt. I know what it is like to be the chairman of an event that is quickly going south. You wish you could stop the rain, but you can’t. Good Job BSTR and Allen Pearce. You did what others said could not be done. You took a sow’s ear and gave us a silk purse. Thank you for your hard work. In closing, thank you to those that came to the church service Saturday night. I appreciate you taking the effort on a very sloppy night. If you have never been to our Saturday night hare scramble services, let me encourage you to visit. We start at 7:30 and I generally end around 8:00. If you have a chair, bring it along. I look forward to seeing you at the next event. Now let’s go and get the mud off of everything.

I look forward to seeing you on the line! Your friend,Andy DicksonFTR ChaplainMaster A #121

Atlas Defender Chest ProtectorQuick Product Review

FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS

For those of you, like me, that wear an Atlas Neck Brace and like to wear a chest protector but have been having a hard time finding a combination that fits right, the search is over. Atlas has finally released their own chest protector called the Defender. Purpose built, the Defender design incorporates a unique fit, function, and adjustment

based around the features of the Atlas brace family. Its high performance foam is lightweight, tough, comfortable, and waterproof; no more added

water weight or damp feeling after washing. It comes with unique waist straps that have built in magnets that help keep the straps in place during use and has a very simple but secure latching mechanism.

Interchangeable parts and straps allow for eight unique configurations that can be worn with or without a neck brace, over or under a jersey, and in both full or front only versions. The fit of the Defender is very good and I love the fact that my Atlas neck brace sits pefectley in a position that still allows me usable movement of my head without sacrificing a feeling of protection. It’s also light weight, weighing

in at 1.6 to 2.2 lbs depending on the configuration you choose. The Defender is available in one adult size, and is the perfect addition to any brace.By the way, the Defender is also GoPro ready! It comes with an optional mount that you can bolt directly to your Defender to get a

perfect view of your riding, racing, or other extreme sports activity. The Atlas Defender retails for $129.99 but can be found discounted if you look. www.atlasbrace.com

Training TipsFLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS

If Mother Nature has cooperated by the time

you read this we should have had at least a couple of hare scrambles in the books. Since we do not get a pre-season to train and acclimate to the abuse we are about to unfold to our ever aging bodies, I am sure that many of us will have sore and aching muscles to say the least. You may have more than that if you choose to pick

on the trees that occasionally jump out in front of us. So how do you combat this you ask? Many will tell you that maybe it is time to find a less active sport like needle point for instance, but we all know that is not an option. We are motorcycle racers to the end; it is in our blood and we will not let age or sore muscles stop us.

First let’s look at pre-race. Warm up exercises are crucial to any sports or fitness training program. The importance of a structured warm up routine should not be under estimated when it comes to preventing sports injury. Warm ups prepare the body for what you are about to put it through. It increases body temperature which in turn increases muscle temperatures allowing muscles to become loose and pliable. An effective warm up also has the effect of increasing both your heart rate and your respiratory rate. This increases blood flow, which in turn increases the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to the working muscles. All this helps to prepare the muscles, tendons and joints for more strenuous activity. Keep in mind that the “practice lap” does not constitute as a warm up. I have never seen anyone stretching during a practice lap. The warm up needs to be completed before throwing your leg over the bike as once your buddy goes by you the race will be on (cause we can’t let our buddy win the practice lap). So remember warm up, warm up, warm up! Now that the race is over let’s look at what we need to be doing to help us be able to get out of bed on Monday morning so we can go to work or school. • Stretching is always recommended post exercise. • Ice is good for the 1st 24 hours; do not leave it on so long

as to burn the skin; usually no more than 20 minutes at a time. If you have the ability to take an ice bath, this helps immensely however use caution as to not completely shock your system. • Maintain adequate hydration – your body is made up of over 50% water. Think about how much you lost during the race sweating. Also don’t forget good nutrition. • Rest – the body is amazing at repairing itself given some time, this includes quality sleep. • NSAIDS - non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like Motrin, or Alleve, can help reduce the pain of soreness, but does not speed up recovery. It’s not advisable to use these medications on a consistent basis to treat muscle soreness, only to help relieve the pain of an intense bout of soreness. • Topical gels –these include icy hot, ben gay, etc. can be helpful to alleviate the pain but they have no proven effect on the underlying muscles. • Epsom salt baths – Epsom salts are rich in magnesium (most of us are deficient in magnesium), and it is easily absorbed through the skin. A good hot (not so hot that you cause burns) bath with 2 cups of Epsom salts for 30 minutes will help reduce inflammation and muscle cramps. It also helps flush toxins and heavy metals from the cells easing muscle pain and helping the body eliminate harmful substances. • Massages – Massage helps the body by relieving soreness and stiffness and it allows the muscles to maintain flexibility and looseness. Research shows that post-competition massage can speed up recovery time by as much as two times faster than rest alone. When given a massage, the body is able to transport nutrients and oxygen better to the muscles because of the enhancing blood flow. Always remember that pain is the body’s way of telling us there is something wrong that needs to be addressed. Listen to your body; it really does know what is best. Always seek medical attention if unsure of the severity of injury; better to be safe than sorry. Feel free to drop by our camp at any time if we can be of assistance.

FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS

A rider will roll the bike up and ask... “What

can I do to ride faster? Is it my suspension, is it my endurance…?” Often it is none of the above. It can be as simple as your foot pegs being worn out. Yes, your foot peg

maintenance could be a big factor in why your bike is handling poorly. Dull and slippery peg surface, slightly pointing down or worn pins provide for a loss of foot control that leads to loss of balance. Have you ever checked your pivot pins and springs? Foot pegs are very important tool for staying on your bike at high speeds. They need to be sharp and straight to hold your feet in place. This helps with your balance and control, particularly when you hit a CAMO-rock or stump that you never see until the bike has kicked high in the air. Do not use bent or wide pegs that put your foot closer to the shifter or brake pedal. You could be missing shifts or finding it hard to shift the bike at speeds or standing on your brake pedal when you are working through a tight wooded section. Properly maintained pegs allow you to keep your feet from sliding around on the pegs, holding your feet in place. Keeping your toes turned in toward the engine is very important and safe to protect your fibula and tibia; not to mention your knees. Your pegs should never point down or sag; they must be parallel to the floor. The pegs must snap back with a quick sudden action. Some riders have to replace their pegs, springs, and pins once a season. Depending on who you are, you may find that sharpening your pegs maybe a standard routine service every four races or so. If you have aftermarket pegs make sure you follow the manufacturer’s recommendations when installing. We find that a tall rider will have his or her pegs mounted in the position for a shorter rider. Just as well we see a shorter rider with the pegs mounted

in the position for a taller rider. Keep your pegs CLEAN! Footpegs jammed full of mud will wear your them out fast. Your pegs are important, they’re your good friend.Take care of them and they will take care of you.

This peg set up is wrong. The rider is 5’ 6” and the installation is for a 6’ tall rider. Note, the pin and springs are worn out already. Also too, the peg off set is for a rider that has a size 13 boot. This rider has a size 9 boot. Shifting and breaking is difficult for him.

These are only one example of a properly mounted peg; Parallel to the ground, sharp, clean. What you can’t see is the new pins and springs that provide clean sharp crisp action that allows for the boot to stick to the peg, keeping the toes in place allowing for sure shifting and breaking.

FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERSSummertime Fun

Summertime is over and the cool Autmn air is settling in. Can you feel it? Yea, me neither! While a lot of us were drudging along in the wonderful Florida heat and humidity this summer, some of our fellow FTR

members actually had vacations. Here’s a small sampling of what they did. Try not to be jealous of the views.

BSTR tries to go on a Colorado trip every other summer with members who help put on the Gatorback Hare Scramble and Lochloosa enduro. We normally go to Crested Butte, Colorado but about a year ago a couple of members saw some

videos of trails in Cloudcroft, New Mexico (Lincoln National Forest). We were a bit skeptical at first but after watching videos of the area we decided to give it a try. Allen Pearce was able to find a house that would accommodate 17 club members and we could ride out of the front yard and onto the trails; The house was awesome btw. Myself, Tim Nordle, and Curt Bell drove the truck and trailer out with the bikes; 30 hours each way. Allen followed us out in his motor home with Brandon and Donald St John driving and two of our older and long standing members, Lowel Saxton and George Edwards and their wives along for the ride. New Mexico was not near as vast or scenic as Colorado but there was far more wildlife, and plenty of great trails for a seven day riding trip. Carlsbad caverns was on the east side of the mountain range and White Sands New Mexico was on the west side of the mountain range. It was truly a great trip for all !

The Gustafson family spent a week in Yosemite National Park in California. Brad and a few of the kids actually hiked the 18.6 mile hike to the top of Half Dome. They did a lot of hiking and boating at Bass Lake

and walked through the Gaint Sequoia trees as well.

Over the summer Lacey Nordle was, ironiclly, fleeing and evading the police as she performed as a stunt rider in Pitbull’s “Baddest Girl in

Town” music video. You can “catch” her, if you can, in action on YouTube and I’ve got to say it’s a pretty catchy tune, even in Spanish. Good job Lacey!

and even crashing one, on purpose, through a wall of fire in front of thousands of people. If you go to Disney’s Hollywood Studios make sure you check out the Lights, Motors, Action Extreme Stunt Show and chances are you’ll get to watch Steve do just that.

After snapping some pictures and mingling with the fans, Steve took a breather and gave us an exclusive behind the scenes tour and tok some time for a quick Q &A session.

Who did you look up to growing up around dirt bikes? First and foremost my dad. Also, I was always a big fan of Ricky Carmichael and Kevin Windham, they were definitely my favorite riders. What’s the significance of your number 848 and how long have you had it? My dad actually chose the number. He chose it because it was the time I was born which is pretty funny I think. But it has stuck in the family. How long have you been involved in the Lights, Motors, Action! Extreme Stunt Show? I’ve been up at the show for about 8 months now.Tell us how you learned about and auditioned for the job at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. I honestly got pretty lucky, I had a friend that I raced with the previous year on the same MX team, and he was working up there and I asked him one day about it so he hooked me up with some contacts. In your wildest dreams did being a stunt man ever cross your mind? It honestly never did, it’s such a cool job and I’m lucky to say that I love what I do.

Go over your daily routine at work. Well, in the morning we have our warm ups to prep for our shows later that day. And between shows we always work out and prep for the next show that day. What kind of training and practice is involved in what you do? Well, its definitely a job that requires good fitness so we are always working out like cardio and strength training…a lot of running stairs to stay in shape. We push ourselves with training which is always good. As far as training on the bike goes, we do a lot of drifts and balance training. How many shows a day do you do?For the most part we have two shows a day. But, different times of the year we will have three and even four shows a day when the park is real busy. Has this new job improved your off road riding skills and endurance? It has a little bit. Riding on asphalt is totally different than dirt and when I first started it was quite a shock. But, luckily we have awesome trainers and I was able to adapt quickly. But street riding does improve your throttle and bike control which is beneficial when riding dirt.

What kind of bikes are you riding and what are themodifications to them? Our bikes are Yamaha WR450’s and are basically stock. Our mechanics do put on oversized brakes, the street

tires of course, and different plastics.Does it feel weird riding a different brand of bike than you race? Not really, I’m used to them both, I have a pretty neutral bike set up for

races and for work so it’s easy to go back and forth. When you do the “Burning Man” stunt what is the process to get ready? It’s a long process to get ready for that stunt, overall it takes about 45 minutes to prepare for it. We wear about 5 layers of protection including fireproof Nomex, Special Cool gel to keep our body cool during the stunt and Burning Gel to catch us on fireHow did you feel the first time you did the fire stunt? It was pretty intense, I remember I couldn’t sleep the night before we were supposed to do the stunt for the first time because I was so worried about doing it right. Luckily I did fine and everything went smooth.Does crashing on purpose ever get routine? Somewhat it still gets nerve-racking every time I go out but we do a lot of training for it and you just go out and do it .What other stunts have you done? There is a lot of stunts that go on during the show. My main stunts are riding motorcycles and jet skis. Later on down the road I plan on learning car stunts as well.Do you have a favorite? It would definitely be getting caught on fire because your name is called out and to hear the crowd go crazy is an awesome feeling! What part of your job do you enjoy the most? I just enjoy waking up and getting paid to do what I love and that’s riding dirt bikes! That and being able to go out and shake hands, sign autographs and take pictures with the fans. It’s an awesome feeling! What’s more exciting getting the tap on the helmet that’s your cue to go or hearing Uncle Bills “10 Seconds!!”? That’s a tough one, but I’d have to say the feeling you get when you hear “ten seconds” is pretty exciting.

Give me one behind the scenes factoid you really think is cool.Well, there is a lot going on behind the scenes and a lot of it is secret but it’s just cool to see an awesome group come together and put together an awesome show that people love. And it’s an amazing feeling to be apart of that. What are your plans for this FTR season? My plans for this year are to race as many as I can. I definitely wont make it to all of them but it’s always a blast to go battle with all your friends. But just go out and have fun is the goal this year.Is there anybody you want to thank? Yea definitely! I want to thank my family and friends for supporting me .Dorothy wants to know…where did Herbie go? Haha.. Herbie is always cruising around the park meeting guests. I’ll see him every once in awhile.Have you had dinner with Mickey yet? I actually haven’t had dinner with the boss man yet, haha, hopefully, soon, I’ll get the chance to!Do you get a nice cast member discount? Yea we do! It’s always nice to get discounts on property. They take pretty good care of us which is pretty cool.Does Lights, Motors Action have a collectible pin? I want to say they do but I’m not 100% sure. Thanks for your time Steve and thanks for the behind the scenes tour. As with any type of riding, be safe

and have fun. Thanks for having me. I really appreciate the opportunity! We will see you at the show or at the starting line!! Thanks again!

RACE REPORTSFLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS

Temperature in the mid to high seventies, low humidity and

clear skies marked the start of the 62nd annual running of the Little Brown Jug Enduro, hosted by the Greenville Enduro Riders Association. GERA members hung over 2500 arrows to denote the scenic 50+ mile course. With 5 timed sections, the course included an entertaining and challenging variety for riders of all skill levels. A multitude of climbs and descents helped prepare FTR entrants for next week’s Gatorback Harescramble. In a very un-FL like section, FTR sugar sand veterans were introduced to

the experience of riding through a few miles of loose rock varying ranging from baseball to basketball size. Riders were also greeted with the opportunity for a little splash cooling while riding down a short distance of flowing rock bed creek. Several riders, including myself, involuntarily stopped for a short swim. Throughout the race, riders were heard commenting on the great trail, perfect weather and joy of kicking off the new season with both friends and friendly rivals. If you missed the Little Brown Jug this year, don’t make the same mistake next year!

Little Brown Jug Enduro

Left Florida September 11th

for Land Between the Lands Dual Sport (LBL200) in Kentucky. Picked up my son Austin in Nashville who flew in from Salt Lake City. Hooked up with fellow FTR riders Dave and Justin Duthie, Bob and Brian Parks, Dave Johnson, Drew Cole, Kenny Campbell, Todd Bynum and Curtis Bell. I am sure there were more given that Florida residents accounted for 54 of the 250 participants. Rode 245 miles Saturday and Sunday through wooded rolling hills. About half of which was very fun single track. Very fun ride. Drove 27 hours straight to get to Salt Lake City by Monday evening. That was tough, but Austin had to work Tuesday. Rode Tibble fork trails in Uinta National forest by myself (not a smart plan). After 2 hours of

1st and 2nd gear single track covering only 15 miles got back to van just before a hail storm hit. The temperature dropped to 46 degrees at 2:00pm. Next day went out to the desert at little Sahara OHV park (60,000 acres of saga brush flats, juniper covered hills, sand dunes, and a 700 ft sand mountain (Croom on steroids). Again, I was the only living soul out there but like the day before, had cell service most of the time and kept in contact with Austin. A great time overall. Only regret is I did not have any FTR buddies in Utah. Anyone want to join me next year?

FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERSBUSINESS PROFILE

What’s the story behind Gulf Coast Motorcycles, where are you located, how did it start, when did it open and who’s the owner? The story behind Gulf Coast Motorcycles is really pretty cool. Our owner, Ed Gallo is a long time motorcycle enthusiast, having owned many different brands of bikes. He retired from the Trade Show Display industry and moved to Naples. It wasn’t very long after that he found it tremendously inconvenient to get service support for his BMW motorcycle. One evening, on a lark, he sent an application to BMW Motorrad to become a dealer. Within a very short period of time, they approved his application, and the rest, almost 14 years later, is history. We’re a family owned, and family operated dealership, and have been since day one. Our location is as central as you could possibly be to service all of SW Florida. We are in South Fort Myers, 25 minutes from Naples, and 25 minutes from Port Charlotte, though we do service riders from all over the state, and sell all over the country. What brands and services does your shop provide? We are a Factory Authorized Full Service Dealer specializing in KTM, BMW, and Ducati. It’s more than

just sales here, as we have a very busy service department that people travel from all over to patronize. Our parts department is growing everyday as well, and we stock and represent a full array of Parts, Gear, and Accessories. One of the benchmarks that we live by is that we use personally what we sell. Our conscientious service department provides a very high level of service from our service

manager, and our techs, and support staff…basically they take care of your bike the way that they want their own bike to be pampered. What’s sets GC Motorcycles apart from other dealerships? Family. Plain and simple. Our owner and his family treats all the employees like they are family. That in turn leads our employees to treat our riders like they’re family. We are

very proud of our rider family here, and make a big deal about it every time we adopt a new member into our rider family. Another aspect that sets us apart is that we all ride. Since we’re all friends we do ride together. Not as much as we’d like, but it has got to be a lot more than some other shops. We do Shop Rides on the street once a month or so, and co-ordinate day’s that we’re riding off road with our off road riding employees, and customers.

What can and organization like FTR benefit from GC Motorcycles? FTR can benefit from Gulf Coast Motorcycles on many levels, all of which are fueled by the passion that we share for riding. It’s pretty simple to us really. If you ride, and you love riding, then it doesn’t need a whole lot of explanation. It blows our mind the number of bike shops that have people that don’t ride as their employees. You wouldn’t go to a doctor that had never been to school would you? We live this stuff. We do it every day at work, and then we play with it when we’re not at work. It gives you a sense of understanding that someone disconnected from our sport doesn’t share. When you know, you know… What can GC Motorcycles benefit from FTR? That’s a great question, and one that we really appreciate. Gulf Coast Motorcycles is Florida’s newest KTM dealer. As such we are learning the dirt bike world and our motivation is pure. We welcome developing a long term relationship with FTR and their riders to expand our rider family, and also to expand our knowledge base. The more we learn, the better we serve. We’re looking forward to the riders of FTR teaching us how to be better riders, and ultimately, a better dealer on every level. Tells us a little about your staff. Ed Gallo, who is our owner works here every day. He and his family are originally from Cleveland, Ohio. The rest of our dealerships family tree is pretty easy to follow. Jeff Gallo, is Ed’s son, and is our General Manager and he rides a 250 XC-W. You’ll see him from Florida Tracks and Trials to Croom riding with his family, and friends. He opened the dealership with Ed in 2002. Jennifer Schmauch is Jeff ’s Sister, and the Controller of our dealership. She came to work here right out of college. She’s the one that makes the day to day operations of Gulf Coast Motorcycles so smooth. Kevin Schmauch who is our service manager here is Jennifer’s husband. Kevin’s been leading the service department here for about 8 years, and is originally from Poughkeepsie, NY. Sean Skinner is our Shop Foreman, and is a Certified Master Technician with BMW. He is married to our Business Manager Theresa Skinner. They’re from Hazel Park, Michigan originally, moved further south and were our very first members of our employee family.Theresa Skinner is the voice of Gulf Coast Motorcycles, since you speak with her first most of the time when you call. She handles all our customers paperwork here, among

a million other things, making sure that all the contracts are done just right, all the tag work is perfect and complete. Since day one, Theresa has been the keystone of the sales, finance, and business departments of the dealership. Pete Felice is from New York, and has been a technician here for about 8 years. He’s been fixing motorcycles, cars, and other broken stuff for most of his life. Like our other employee family members here, Pete is a customer too. Sam Kilcrease is our newest technician here. Specializing in Ducati, and KTM, he’s originally from Pensacola, FL., and spends all his free time with motorcycles. He just picked up a 250 SX, and you’ll see him riding all over the place. He is also a CCS racer and a track day bike guru. “Ricky” Bobby Dean is our service liaison. That means he takes care of most of the shop maintenance, bike detailing, delivery and pick up, and he is also the resident grill master at the dealership on Saturdays “Rider Eat and Greet” cookout. Fred Shutrump is the newest addition to our shop family,

and he’s earned his stripes as an award winning custom painter. Custom paint comes with a very high level of custom service, and he’s a natural fit with our customers here. Jeremy Savage is our Parts Manager, originally from Wisconsin, he’s also a customer here. He and his family have a rich history of customizing award winning bikes and hot rods. When it comes to making your ride look unique and distinct, Jeremy’s the guy to see.

Collin Moore is our newest parts counter family member.

He’s originally from the hills of Eastanolle, Georgia, he’s been riding dirt bikes “since he was old enough to walk.” Experienced in dirt and street, he’s got the answers to you parts and accessory questions, along with the experience to back it up. Webb Benninghoven has been our Sales & Marking Manager here for about 3 years. He joined our rider family as a customer, and then joined the employee family a few months later from a background in the luxury and exotic automobile industry. Ed Cahill from our sales department worked with Webb for quite a few years before, and joined the employee family shortly after Webb got here, so they could work together again. You’ll see him on his R1200R around town and out in the twisties. Ed & Webb are like 2 kids in a candy store spending time with these great motorcycles and great customers. You’ll find one of them eager to help you get onon your next bike!

General Manager Jeff Gallo and Sales Manager Webb Benninghoven. Two of the friendly faces you’ll see at Gulf Coast Motorcycles.

How involved do you want to get with FTR? The sky is the limit. We are still learning what we can do. Are there any racers at the shop? Sam Kilcrease is a CCS racer, and he’s expressed an interest in racing off road, and we’re looking forward to supporting him in the years ahead. Do you have any events coming up you’d like to promote? We always have events here at the shop. We’d encourage everyone to check not only our website, but our facebook page, where we post all the goings on. We have on road, and off road shop rides, a riders cook out “Eat & Greet” every Saturday from 11-2, we’re always at Cape Coral Bike Night, and have quite a few exciting events every year. From movie nights, to live music, there is always something going on at Gulf Coast Motorcycles.

EDITORS NOTE:For those of you that don’t know, one of our FTR familes, James, Jan, Chandler and Morgan Hill, and Jason Brunderman lost their Toy Hauler to fire just hours after returning from The Gatorback Hare Scramble. Luckily they had removed their bikes from the hauler but lost everything else including all of their riding gear. Without a second thought, the great people at Gulf Coast Motorcycles stepped up and felt the need to help them out. They supplied Chandler with a full set of Thor/KTM racing gear and gave James a substantial discount for whatever else he needed. A special THANK YOU needs to go to Culf Coast’s Jeff Gallo and Webb Benninghoven fortheir generosity. This speaks volumes to what the sport of off road motorcycling is all about, a family sport. Welcome to FTR!

Location: Meeting held by conference callMeeting called to order at 8:04PM by President Randy Faul

Roll call was conducted and the President noted that a quorum was present.

All members present: Randy Faul (President), Amanda Richardson (Vice President), Kevin Vaughan (Treasurer), Jack Terrell (Secretary), Randy Rash (HS Chair), Allen Pearce (Enduro Chair), Carol Preston, (MX Chair)

Old Business: Motion made, seconded and passed by unanimous vote to approve the minutes of the previous meeting.

New Business:

Motion made, seconded and passed by unanimous vote to approve the request of the River City Dirt Riders to use the April 2-3 rain date to reschedule their postponed hare scrambles event.

The Enduro Chair reported that the Daytona Dirt Riders have applied for an AMA national sanction date in February 2016. They will not have confirmation until mid-October. This could result in a conflict with the CFTR Richloam enduro date.

FTR has received a $1750 invoice from Jenn Sheppard for preparation of a special banquet edition magazine based on a contract addendum dated 6/13/15. The invoice includes a charge of $500 for a photographer. A motion was made, seconded and passed by unanimous vote to pay $1250 for the banquet edition.

The Hare Scrambles Chair reported that the Hare Scrambles Committee had passed (at the 9/19/15 meeting) an emergency rule change that split Super PeeWee Quad A & B, and modified practice times and race times for PeeWee motorcycle and PeeWee Quad classes. In accordance with FTR rules, an emergency rule change requires Executive Committee approval before it can be implemented. A motion was made and seconded to approve the emergency rule change. The motion failed to pass by a 2 (in favor) to 5 (against) vote on the basis that it did not rise to the level of an emergency rule change and that it should follow the standard approval procedures outlined in the FTR rulebook.

Motion made, seconded and passed by unanimous vote to approve the Hare Scrambles Chair’s request to appoint Pete Rose as Hare Scrambles Committee Quad representative.

Discussion regarding modification of the contract for the Hare Scrambles electronic scoring contractor. Randy Faul will bring copies of original contract and subsequent addendum to next meeting so that committee members have all information before continuing the discussion.

Randy Faul announced that SADRA has made arrangements for new property for their upcoming hare scrambles, and that the event will be run on the scheduled date.

Motion made, seconded and passed by unanimous vote to hold an Executive Committee meeting at 7:30PM on 9/26/15 at the CFTR hare scrambles event in Bartow.

Motion made, seconded and approved by unanimous vote to adjourn at 9:10PM.
