kilometers from Skopje near the villageof Markova Suica. Marko's Monasterycontains a single cross-shaped churchdedicated to Saint Demetrius. Themonastery grounds also consist oflodgings, a belfry, a well, warehouses,a bakery, and a mill. The church wasbuilt in the second half of the 14th cen-tury. The construction of the Churchbegan under King Volkain and wascompleted during the reign of his sonKing Marko. The fresco inside thechurch has been divided into severalzones. The first zone depicts thehuman-sized saints, the second zonedepicts scenes of the Bible such as thelife of the Holy Mother of God, the lifeand sufferings of Jesus Christ, St.Demetrius and St. Nicholas. Amongthem is the world-recognized fresco,The cry of Rachel, which depicts thesufferings of all mothers who have losttheir sons under the rule of Pontius Pi-late the Prefect of the Roman province

of Judaea. King Marko is painted with aroll in his hands on the right side of themonastery's entrance door. This is amark that he was the one who issuedthe order for start of the constructionbuilding of the church. Today Marko'sMonastery is an active female'smonastery. There you will be welcomedby the monks of the sisterhood, whoeven for a moment will transmit a partof their inner peace. They serve to God,work and pray. They spend most oftheir time painting icons. They paintone of the most beautiful icons inMacedonia. You will also hear many legends andfables about the wonders, which tookplace in Marko's Monastery. But arethey true or false? Well, it is up to youto decide.

The city of tip has so much to offersuch as its rich cultural heritage, its

Entire Macedonia is moving to Skopje. Andwhy would I want to go to a place where myneighbors recently came from or my son anddaughter's friend came from? Sure. I've beenthere a dozen times, but is there anythingelse to see? Occasionally, they will mention iton the television to report on some turmoil inthe local political scene, inform on a seriouscar accident, or when some post-bankruptcyworkers have staged a strike to express theirrevolt. However, there are some good newsas well. For example new investments, newstores; and sometimes the city is filled withpeople, who come to see a concert, festivalor celebration. And that's about it. Until nextyear, until the next wave of good news, thesame old, same old: car accidents, televisionstories on people facing poverty or turmoils inthe local political scene.

We postponed our visit to tip on many occa-sions. Now, we only hold vague memoriesfrom the times we once spend there, whilevisiting our relatives and friends, hanging outwith strange people in strange street corners, while our parents were gossiping with theirfriends and relatives. It seems like the onlyway to revive the image of the city of tip isthrough the television. Once you watched it,you will try to find the place you saw on theTV, wondering from which corner was thatshot taken or where is the small river, whichflows as a small spring through the well-de-signed riverbed; or where are the mystic oldbuildings, where you once spend a night over, hidden in the greens and bushes, which are amark of the city's style. Hmm...and where isthe hotel that looked like a socialist sky-scraper, and the restaurant where you par-ents once took you to attend a weeding?Where is the gracious church of St. Nikola, where bishop of Bregalnica Diocese holds amass and will usually give a statement rightafter it?; or, where is the colorful artistic build-ing of Stip-based theater, which we saw onthe TV, when announcing a premiere?

And, we postponed it again. But, we can'tmake any excuses for forgetting the town oftip. We can't make any excuses for lettingour memories of the city of tip to fade away,as we know it that it is one of the rare citieswhere you can feel the city atmosphere andenjoy the people. We forgot that this is thesame city that we once adored to visit andtake walks in the center while reading themystic-real stories written by Mihail Rendzov,

One thing to remember isto keep an eye on it just so you havean idea where you should turn in caseyou get lost.

And, we are lost again. Despite thefact that we know this area and weknew where we were heading. Weslowed down while passing throughthe industrial zone, which stretchesfrom the highway to the last houses ofthe town. We should be nearing thestores and warehouses of former tex-tile and lather industry gigants, such asAstibo, Bargala, Makedonka, whichtoday are one of the main reasons forpeople to come and spend a day in tip. the place we were looking for. Thelarge balcony, which we saw on theleft, right after the last block of industryhalls, was the place where we wereset to meet our tourist guide from tip. This is a good idea, but you've pickedthe wrong day to come. For that thingyou should come on Saturday. You willvisit the factories, take a walk and eatpastrmajlija, our friend Mrs. KaterinaIvanova said, while we were discussingwhere should we eat our pastrmajlija. She said that once you've came in tipyou can't leave without eating a pastr-majlija. However, we had a long dayahead of us and who knows whetherwe would had enough time to eat thefamous pastrmajlija. The talks, which we had with MrsIvanova and some Stip-residents haveconfirmed our doubts about Stip's liv-ing standards in the past two decades.

Ever since, the large factories sinked, young people have been forced tomove out, and the living standardshave gotten worse. A minor positiveimpulse was the opening of Universityof Goce Delev, which cut the stu-dent's expenses and of course the newtrend, shopping in tip, which eachday becomes more popular. On Saturday, the city is filled with peo-ple from Skopje and other towns fromacross the country. What you see arefamilies and people who came to shop

in Stip. They will arrive on Saturday, check all stores and factories, buythemselves some clothes, get somelunch, spend one great day in Stip andsave some money, Keti said. Ask any tip-resident and trust me youwill get the same answer. The depart-ments of former tip-based factoriesproduce shoes, shirts, male and fe-male suits and coats for attractiveworld-famous brands. Don't be sur-prised if the things you've bought instores in England, Netherlands or Ger-many has been manufactured in oneof the departments in tip. And, true. You will easily notice thehigh-quality shoes and clothes in theshops in the center of the city (thestreet that we once saw on the TVscreens) but, as we learned factoriesoffer a much wider choice of clothesand shoes. It's a fact that the shop-ping could last longer than the beauti-ful sun. And be sure that if you havetaken your camera you won't stop tak-ing pictures from the beautiful town.

tip does not only stand for Astibo orBargala, Stip stands for them both as one developed and wealthy munici-pality, first mentioned in the 4th centuryand the first station on your way toPautalia and Serdika present Kus-tendil and Sofia in Bulgaria. Some 14kilometers from tip are the remains ofBargala, the late-ancient city build afterthe destruction of Astibo. tip was alsoknown as Stipion, name used in theByzantine period, while its presentname was written in the books of fa-mous Ottoman writer Evlija Celebi, aswell as during the time of King Samoil, when the city had only 2250 houses.

We are climbing the Isar fortress, a to-ponym which is listed among the city'ssynonyms. The climbing might be a bittougher for people, who are used totake walks from the car to the com-puter chair or the armchair before theTV. But, you won't regret it as Isarfortress will tell you all kinds of stories. From up there you will learn a lot aboutthe history and the geography of thecity. You will witness the cultural her-itage of the city, the geographical char-acteristics of places, you've oncevisited and the images you saw on thetelevision. From up there you will real-ize how much you've unfairly neg-lected the city of tip.

swer for quite some time as we werewondering who makes garments forMacedonian bishops and priests;where the ceremonial attires that bish-ops wear during religious holidays orordinary mass come from? We headedto Matka. It was Sister Perpetua's idea to set upa workroom. Once we restored the sis-terhood in 1998, we wanted ourmonastery to run its own economy. Wetried with goat breeding, we processedthe milk to make goat cheese and yo-gurt. Eventually we gave up. We werejust four and we couldn't manage dueto lack of time.' One among many ideaswas to set up a workroom for clericalgarments, Sister Dorotea said. Shewelcomed us at the monastery's gate.Usually Sister Perpetua - the MotherSuperior - welcomes the visitors, butshe was on a trip.At first they were not sure whether theywould succeed, but time revealed themiraculous power of the will and theprayer.I got scared. I had no sewing skills at

the time. I knew nothing about tailoring, sewing. We had poor skills in needle-work - reminiscences of our childhood.Nonetheless, with God's help welearned, Sister Dorotea told us.Sister Haritina, the youngest monasticwoman in the sisterhood, joined us inthe conversation. She largely con-tributed to modernization of theprocess within the workroom. SisterHaritina is in charge of design andneedlework. I am information technol-ogist by vocation, so my job includesmachine programming and garmentsdesign.Machines have computers built intothem so that you may use software tocontrol the stitching, several colors ofthread and to automatically produceembroidery, Sister Haritina said. She switched on the machine to showus how it works and then started up aprogram designated on the display asProgram# 12.The needle started to pull on the goldsilk thread on the red Italian satin. • up. This will be a medieval cross en-tangled in round pattern. The model isbeing already drawn up with program-ming, and a small attachment turnsthem into instructions. The softwaregives you options to choose embroi-dery pattern, but precaution is neededto make sure that you give the machinean order it can deliver. However, thiscan be solved, if you work gradually, part by part, Sister Haritina revealedportions of artifice. As head and needle struck the fabric,Sister Dorotea told us that they plan totailor epitrachyl - an accessory like along silk band usually worn by priestsover the robe. It was ordered by aGreek monastery. The workroom usually generates wholegarments for all orders of the Macedon-ian Orthodox Church deacon's, cleri-cal and bishop's. As we spoke, SisterDorotea's mobile phone rang. We'veunderstood that Sisters from amonastery in Debar's Rajica wereasking something about the new robeof Bishop Kiril of Polog-Kumanovo Dio-cese.We were tailoring the robe for BishopKiril. We saw the garment, as you cansee on the doll, and mitres clericalhats - are made in the monastery inRajica, near Debar. We previouslytalked with the Rajica Monastery Sis-

ters about the ornaments because wewant the garments match the hats,Sister Haritina said. Before out departure, we wanted to wit-ness an ordinary day at the workroom. When are the sewing hours, and whenSisters perform other duties in themonastery. They comply with an unwrit-ten rule they hardly speak amongeach other while working. The workrolls out with a prayer. The day beginswith monastic duties lasting up to threehours. Although their foremost dutiesare prayer and spiritual reflection, Sis-ters perform other duties as well, andthis includes upkeep of the monastery.Life in monastery requires tending tothe monastery's building and grounds.Once the prayers are complete, othermonastery-linked physical dutiesposlushanie roll out, including cuisinework. Sisters spend most of their timein the workroom sewing clerical gar-ments.They walked us to the monastery'sgate. They must have noticed that ourfirst encounter with their handmadecraft was love at first sight. And it wasnot accidentally that they gave us a gift it was something made in their studio bookmarks with ornaments with thesame shape as the ones on BishopKiril's attire.

RECLINING ON VERSESby Igor Isakovski (b. 1970)

i have verses all aroundme, they float through the airtrembling under my fingerslike a fire in front of a cigarettethey shove into my hairitch me under my nosethey scratch my back

they await me in the bedlike a tender warm smooth womanthey sneak over my legs lickingmy chest the verses shoveinto my navel and deepen there

all around me verseson top of me verses beneath me verseslike tender butterflies like golden dustthey run away like a flock of mute fishin the sky's pond that shines in goldgolden as silence

  • 38In 1927, Metodi Gogov from the village ofNovo Selo, near tip, who just finished pri-mary school, came to Bitola to study semi-nary. Out of 170 applicants, only fortypassed the entrance exam. Among themwas Metodi. Many eminent professors, greaterudites and lecturers taught at the semi-nary. Due to that fact many foreign studentscame to study at the seminary. Among themwas the incoming professor, a fugitive fromRussia, Jovan Maksimovic, who looked un-attractive, but had asoul of an angel. There were rumorsthat during the over-throw in Russia, hewas wounded in thethroat and leg andthat's why he had araspy voice andlimped on his leg.

The humble father wasthe first to accept thenew students. As inthe case with Metodi. His small office, wherehe read and wrote, was a place which wasalways open for stu-dents. He gave ad-vices and often gavemoney to the poor. Hehelped them with theirstudies after classes, and if they were wronghe would mildly setthem right. He wasn'ttoo strict as a professor but he appreciatedknowledge.

Soon, Metodi realized that father Jovannever slept. He suffered from insomnia andhe almost never went in bed. The attendantswould find his bed in the exactly same stateas they left it at the beginning of the schoolyear. During the day and during the night hewould check all bedrooms in the dorm just tomake sure everything was all right. If some-one was not covered with a blanket hewould cover them. If someone was sick, hewould buy them a medicine and check themin the morning. During the night, he would

go in his room and pray all night long. Hehad a long table pilled with books. An houror two after midnight he would lay his headon the books and sleep for a few minutesand then he would wake up and continuewith his praying. He was fasting very often. He ate nothing but bread and water. He wasnever angry at anybody. He took specialcare of the sick and the prisoners. Everydayhe would go visit the sick in the city hospitaland comfort them.

The students wereoverjoyed for havingsuch a professor, whom they describedas a true spiritual fa-ther. During a schooltrip, he visited themonastery of St.Naum of Ohrid andasked for his icon, from which he neverset apart from.

After graduating,Metodi went to Bel-grade to enroll at thefaculty of theologicalstudies. In 1934 Russ-ian church appointedfather Jovan Maksi-movic as archbishopof Shangai. Severalyears later fatherJovan Maksimovicembarked on an offi-cial visit to Belgrade

and met with Metodi. He offered him to takehim as a primate in Sangaj. Metodi wasoverwhelmed by his offer, but the Yugoslavpolice prevented him from going away.

From Sangaj he went to Paris and then toSan Francisco. He died in 1966 on July 2,on the eve of St. Naum Ohridski feast. Many people witnessed the miraculousnesshe did during his life time, so in 1933 theRussian church declared him a saint, St.Jovan of Shanghai. The same year, MetodiGogov was appointed as the fourth Arch-bishop of Ohrid and Macedonia, ArchbishopMihail.
