Mme Noël’s class

Since their return from winter break, the grade 4/5 class has continued to learn a lot in all subject areas! In Science, students wrapped up their Light unit and enjoyed applying their learning by making their own devices relating to light. In Math, students continued learning about fractions. They have built upon their understanding by converting fractions to decimals and vice versa. In English Language Arts, we started literature circles. Students are reading books, like Holes and Bridge to Terabithia, and each have a role in their group to develop their understanding of the text. Finally, students enjoyed a trip to Stony Mountain Ski Area with the 5/6 class. It was a lovely day and a valuable experience!

From the Classroom

Mme Dueck’s class

The grades 4/5 class have been enjoying some French videos entitled Noterythme

which are lipdubs made by various schools in Quebec. After viewing the videos, we

discuss the main idea of the song presented. It is a good opportunity for the students to

see the French language and culture presented in an authentic way. We have also been

enjoying some animated books that highlight French sounds. We began a novel study

with a book entitled Zamboni. We visited the Zamboni at the skating rink before we

started reading to activate prior knowledge. The children are reading in groups and

practicing their skills are summarizing, asking questions, making connections and

visualizing as they read. In social studies, the children are working in groups to do

research on the various regions of Canada. They are learning about the climate, relief,

plants, animals and resources of the various regions. In the future, we will connect our

knowledge of the various regions with artwork created by Canadian artists.

Mme Orchards Class

The 2/3’s have gotten right back into the swing of things after

the winter break! They have been working and playing with

winter vocabulary and are getting quite comfortable using them

in sentences and stories. They have been working challenging

books this month and are learning how to write good

summaries. In art, they have played with pastels and glue

together and have found some interesting ways to draw plants

from observation. In science, the 2/3’s have starting working

with magnets and are amazed at what they can do. The grade

3’s have been diving into fractions while the grade 2’s are

mastering their double and triple digit addition and subtraction.

It has been a great month and we’re very excited for all of the

activities February will bring!

M. Griffith’s class

Another month has flown by in the 5/6 classroom. We started off the month

with the 7th Annual Vidéastes Competition in collaboration with the grade 7s

and 8s from St. Paul’s Collegiate. This year it was one of our groups –

L’invention de l’iPad – that took home the Jury’s Pick award.

Congratulations to Abi, Addison, Jaxen and Shayla.

We had a fun time with Backwards Day where almost

everybody in the class wore something backwards.

We had a great time with the 4/5 class when we went

on our ski trip to Stony Mountain. To celebrate their

30th anniversary they had a draw for a free t-shirt

which was one by Marlee! Next month is I Love to Read Month and we have

already started kicking off the multitude of activities

planned.

Happy New Year all!! Things have settled back into a routine and students are working and playing

hard every day. This month, we continued printing practise with lower-case letters - just a few left

to do – and counting up to 50 and down from 10. They are superstars at counting!! We kicked off

the unit on “Shapes” by creating squares (carrés), triangles (triangles), rectangles (rectangles), and

circles (cercles) with our bodies. Each student is writing a book about a snowman which will be

shared during “I Love to Read Month”! Students are becoming very good at solving conflicts using

the different strategies learned at school. Often, they are totally successful without my input. The

students are enjoying choosing books for Home Reading and returning these books when they

choose. The highlight this month was definitely Mme. Diva!! She sang songs and the Kinders were

able to try out different styles of marionettes. Super Fun!

Vive l’hiver! This has been the theme for January in the grade 2 classroom. Students

practised their reading, writing and speaking skills in a variety of French winter

themed learning centers. In Art, the students explored symmetry when creating

mirrored silhouette wintry scenes and snowflake quilts. The students learned about

the amazing work of photographer, Alexey Kljatov. The class enjoyed some time

outdoors as we observed snowflakes under magnifying glasses. In English, the class

has been learning about penguins and non-fiction text features. Students have been

hard at work completing their research projects on various types of penguins. This

month, we were fortunate to welcome the school division’s Literacy with ICT Leader,

Mr. Reimer to our class. Mr. Reimer worked with the students on coding using the

iPads. The students also participated in a song and dance workshop with Manitoba

musician, Madame Diva. We are looking forward to the upcoming field trip to the

Festival du Voyageur and the many fun activities planned for “I Love to Read” month in

February!

One of the grade three January themes is the north and its people. We have read

booklets, looked at maps, used our iPads and ‘googled’ to compare and contrast life

in the north to life in our area. We are also looking at how the Inuit lifestyle has

changed over the years. We have looked at Ted Harrison’s artwork to inspire us to

create our own paintings using chalk, oil pastel, and cutout.

M. Aaron had us create original work for the display case using shaving cream as

our medium!

We have enjoyed many different activities for such a short month: Popcorn day,

backwards day, WSO and Student Voice. M. Aaron had us out on snowshoes for

gym class! Lots of fun.

We have worked on measurement in Math. Do you know how many grade three

students can fit inside a square meter? Well, all 18 of us were able to squeeze in!

We have started singing Voyageur songs. Mme Lacroix brought in a mystery

suitcase and we had to practise our oral French skills sharing what we thought

could be in the case. Mme had to give us several hints until we guessed she had an

accordion! The French Canadian house parties often included accordion music! We

are listening to Mme Diva’s music and dancing to her songs in preparation for when

she comes to our school on Friday!

We love to read in our class and we are looking forward to February – ‘I love to

read’ month!

Bonjour Parents!! I can't believe it's the end of January already! I guess the saying is true; time flies when you are having fun! We've been working hard to get back into a routine this month. We have learned a new weather song as well as new dance/game songs. We love playing these games at the end of the day. They encourage speaking French and they help teach new vocabulary. We have been working on addition and subtraction in math. We are working hard to get our facts to 10 and from 10 down pat! In writing we have been working on stories that have a beginning, a middle and an end. To help us write these stories, we have been reading a lot of different stories and summarizing their beginning, middle and end. If you are not yet signed up for our Classdojo please contact me, as I post pictures often about the activities we are doing in class.
