Home for Thanksgiving November, 1984: Margaret was a graduate student in Phil-adelphia. Winter break came so early that year that it made no sense to travel home to Alabama for Thanksgiving. As the dark nights grew longer and the winds blew colder, she began to waver. Was it too late? Could I still change my mind? But she knew it was too late — far, far too late. Besides, she had papers to write and papers to grade. Plus, she had no car; and forget trying to book a flight this close to the holiday — even if she had money to spare for a ticket. Amtrak was sold out and the long, long bus ride was too daunting to think about. So she resigned herself to spending Thanksgiving in Philadelphia, a thousand miles from home. The Sunday before Thanksgiving, on her weekly call home to her parents, she admitted, “I don’t think I can stand it here. I don’t know if I can do this.” “Just come home,” her father said. “It’s too late.” She was crying. “It’s way too late.” “You can always come home, Sweet,” her dad said. “Even if you marry a [scoundrel], you can always leave him and come home.” Thirty-five years later, she cherishes the memory of that phone call. “These were words of loving reassurance from a father to his child, a reminder that as long as he and my mother were alive, there would always be a place in the world for me, a place where I would always belong, even if I didn’t always believe that I belonged there . . . “But I wonder now, decades later, if my father’s words were more than a reminder of my everlasting place in the family. I wonder now if they were an expression of his own longing for the days when all his chicks were still in the nest, the circle was still closed and the family that he and my mother had made was complete . . . “I gave no thought to it then, but I think of it all the time now. I think of my father’s words across a bad land-line connection in 1984 that reached my homesick heart in cold Philadelphia. I think of the twenty-six-hour bus ride into the heart of Greyhound darkness that followed, a desperate journey that got me home in time for the squash casserole and cranber-ry relish. I think most of my own happiness, of all the years with a good man and family we have made together and the absorb-ing work — everything that followed a single season of loss, and only because I listened to my father. Because I came home.” This is the domain of Christ’s reign: home, the place where we are always welcomed, loved, forgiven, cared for and about. Christ’s love “reigns” in our ordinary, simple, well-lived-in houses. It is into that kingdom, that paradise, that the crucified Jesus welcomes the good thief. On this last Sunday of the Church year, we honor Christ the King whose rule is one of humble service; Christ the King whose power is compassion, whose scepter is humility, whose coin is forgiveness and recon-ciliation.

SUPPORT AGING RELIGIOUS Our second collection today is for the Retire-ment Fund for Religious. Many senior Cath-olic sisters, brothers, and religious order priests served for little or no pay. Today, re-ligious communities often do not have enough savings to meet retirement needs. Your gift helps provide medications, nursing care, and more for tens of thousands of elder-ly religious. It also helps ensure younger members can continue the good works of their elders. Please be generous.

The SVDP Society would like to thank the parish-es for the overwhelming contributions for the homeless in Pittsburgh. We collected 36 large bags of coats, sweaters, blankets and sox for the SVDP Conference at Duquesne University. The students go out into the city each week to locate the homeless and help them with food and warm clothing. Luke 3:11 “He who has two coats, let him share with him who has none…”

Dear Parishioners, This is the Feast of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. All students of American History know at least the broad outline of the Revolutionary War. In 1776, the Americans decided they no longer wanted to be ruled by a King. Yet, here we are on this Sunday declaring that Jesus is our King. A King has absolute authority over his subjects. A King is to be revered and obeyed. So, if we claim that Jesus is our King, than His teachings and His Word are not optional suggestions that we can choose to disregard at will. Can we as citizens of a democracy simultaneously have a King? This is always going to be a “reality check” for us. How good am I at obeying our King and Lord Jesus Christ? Of course, we know that these are not contradictory truths. As an American, you can still think of Jesus as my King and my Lord. Why? Because He doesn’t rule by force or by law or by military might. He rules by LOVE. His love for the human race through His birth, life, death and resurrec-tion proves beyond any shadow of a doubt the depth of His love for us. How can we not love Him and live for Him in return? That is the basis for our obedience and reverence to our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. On behalf of the Friars and all the staffs of our four Parishes, I want to wish you all a joyous and blessed Thanks-giving Day. Once again the Masses are: 7:30 a.m. at Beaver, 8:30 a.m. at New Brighton and 9:00 a.m. at both Roches-

ter and Freedom. The Parish offices are closed both November 28 and 29 for the Holi-day. Some may be closing early on Wednesday. As the month moves to its final days, don’t forget to pray for your dead and the souls in Purga-tory

Fr. Bob

All ages from 6th grade to adult are welcome. Call Ken Hand, music director of Sts. Peter & Paul at 724-544-4337 or email him at [email protected]

Holy Family has many good people who support our BINGO every Wednesday. We average over 100 players every week! It’s a fun night out and if you win some cash, it’s a bonus! Our BINGO is the only weekly fund-raiser in our church cluster. Having said that, it takes a lot of helping hands to keep the games running. Maybe you’re a recent retiree or maybe you’re just looking for something to do. Are you willing to give some of your free time to help the church? One night a month? We’d love to have you join us. It helps us pay the bills, but most important it helps our Church continue to spread the GOOD NEWS. Please give Bill 724-843-4954 a call and let him know you’re willing to help.

MARCO FIORANTE IN CONCERT is a great way to begin your holiday season. He will be performing at Saints Peter and Paul on December 14, at 7:00 p.m. with piano/organ accompaniment by Kenneth Hand, Director of Music at Saints Peter and Paul. This concert will be featuring many traditional Christmas favorites as well as beloved Italian carols such as Gesu Bambino and Tu Scendi dale Stelle. Marco’s lastest CD, LOVE, will be for sale after the concert. For more information: www.facebook.com/public/Marco-Fiorante.
