Niagara’s Vine VisionariesProfiles of the Pioneering Winemakers

Linda Bramble

How a handful of idealists and stubborn, single-mindedenthusiasts created a great wine region.

As recently as the 1970s, the term “fine Ontario wine” was an oxymoron, and a bottle of Ontario wine at a wine-tasting produced skeptically raisedeyebrows.

The Ontario wine industry in the Niagara region began to experimentas early as the 1920s with French varietals and hybrids — only to have itsefforts frustrated by Prohibition, government restrictions, the Depression, and a World War.

And yet today the wines of Ontario are among some of the finest in theworld. What did it take to change the practices of a century and transforman archaic industry into a modern one in just thirty years? Who were theleaders of this revolution? What were the challenges? And what might thefuture hold for this vibrant community?

In Niagara’s Vine Visionaries, Linda Bramble tells the dramatic story ofpeople who carried out this transformation of the Niagara industry. Hereare the pioneers, the visionaries, the scientists, the entrepreneurs, and theall-round “characters” who pushed, cajoled, and dragged Niagara into itsproud place in the world of international wine-making.

LINDA BRAMBLE is a writer, sommelier and wine educator. Aftercompleting her Ph.D. in philosophy and education, she taught at BrockUniversity and Concordia University. She has developed curricula to teachfuture sommeliers, and written five books on wine, food, and wine travel. Sheteaches wine appreciation and wine sales and service at Brock University’s wine institute.

Wartime HalifaxThe photo history of a Canadian city at war1939-1945

William D. Naftel

A stunning visual account of Canada at war, focusing on the citywhere everyone — children, civilians and military personnel —was part of the effort to defeat Nazi Germany

In 1939, Halifax quickly became the country’s centre of waractivity when Canada declared war on Germany. With its vitalnaval base and its key role in getting supplies to Great Britain, thecity was on a wartime footing for seven long years. Blackouts, enemy ships just offshore, and worries about raids and attackswere part of daily life. So were thousands of soldiers, sailors, airmen and merchant seamen who passed through on their way toor from Europe.

Wartime Halifax is a visual history of this period. WilliamNaftel has found a treasure trove of archival photos showing thebustling shipyards, construction, convoys and cadets, and never-seen-before images of parades, platoons and personnel. The photosshow the dramatic impact of the war on city life — long lineups atmovie theatres, crammed dance halls, and crowded restaurants.Visuals and text convey a unique portrait of a wartime city — notin far-off Europe but on Canada’s east coast.

This is a book for anyone with an interest in the history of theCanadians who participated in the Second World War. It is acompanion to William Naftel’s triple award-winning book Halifaxat War published in fall 2008.

Pirates of the Atlantic Robbery, murder and mayhem off the Canadian coast

Dan Conlin

The dramatic real stories of the pirates who operated off Canada’seast coast

River of StrangersFrank Parker DayIntroduction by Alan Wilson

A story of survival, romance and religion set in NorthernManitoba during the early 20th century fur trade by a leadingNova Scotia writer

Man-tay-seepee (River of Strangers) is the Cree name for the Churchill Riverin Manitoba, where this novel takes place. The title sets the tone for thisdramatic story, which tells the tale of men and women driving for placeand survival in the rough frontier atmosphere of the early 20th century furtrade. Probing the mystery and loneliness of this landscape, the novel tellsa complex story of complex men and women — Innu, Inuit, and those ofEuropean ancestry drawn from clashing Maritimes and old-worldbackgrounds.

A fanatically reformist clergyman challenges the unlicensed ways of aprimitive frontier; a Highland Cape Breton hero tries to find purpose andmeaning in self-exile from his old life; women struggle for recognition anddignity in an isolated world dominated by both weak and powerful men;and a secret romance threads its way through the story. Frank Parker Dayis best known for the broad canvas of his novel, Rockbound, and in thislead-up to his finest work we find common elements and themes playingout on another isolated, powerful stage.

Folklore of Nova ScotiaMary L. Fraser, Introduction by Ian Brodie

A new edition of a classic book on Nova Scotia’s rich folklore traditions

Mary Fraser was a pioneer in researching and recording the folklore ofCape Breton and eastern Nova Scotia, and this book is an invaluablesource for the legends of rural Nova Scotians. Scottish, Acadian andMi’qmaq traditions are all included.

Writes Ian Brodie in the introduction: “Folklore of Nova Scotia is aflawed, wonderful book — or a wonderfully flawed book. As I read, Ialternate between exasperation and delight: exasperation from itsromanticism, delight from its embrace of the contemporary; exasperationfrom its prejudices, delight from its efforts at multiculturalism … It is adocumentary snapshot of a part of Nova Scotia’s cultural history that waschanging before the author’s eyes.”

MARY L. FRASER grew up in Harbour Centre, Antigonish County. Shereceived degrees from Francis Xavier University and Fordham University inNew York City.

IAN BRODIE is assistant professor of folklore at the University College ofCape Breton.

David MilgaardAn innocent 16-year-old,condemned to 23 yearsin a federal penitentiary

Cynthia J. Faryon

This new series provides young readerswith compelling stories of teens andyoung people who fell afoul of thejustice system, and were wrongfullyconvicted.

David Milgaard was a troubled kid, andhe got into lots of trouble. That made iteasy for the Saskatoon police to tag him asa murderer. At 16, David Milgaard wasarrested, jailed, and sent to trial for therape and murder of a young nursingassistant, Gail Miller. His worst nightmarebegan when he was convicted and sent toadult prison for life. Throughout his 23years in prison, David maintained that hewas innocent and refused to admit to acrime he had not committed, even thoughthat meant he was never granted parole. Finally, through the incredibledetermination of his mother and newlawyers who believed in him, David wasreleased and proven not guilty.

This book tells this story, explaininghow a series of bad decisions, tunnelvision, poor representation and outrightlying and coercion caused this tragicmiscarriage of justice. It also shows howwith the devotion and dedication of hisstrongest supporter — his mother, JoyceMilgaard — David Milgaard wasultimately able to achieve a measure ofreal justice. Astonishingly, in hindsight, the real murderer was obvious from thestart.
