JUVENILE FICTION September

A Paperback Original 6 x 9 | 160 pp

Trade Paper US $12.95 | CAN $14.50 978-1-891369-98-8 USC

Ages 11 to 15

A middle-school novel about a skateboarder faced with a moral dilemma.

Skateboarder Josh Lowman witnesses one of the best skateboarders in town (the local bully) commit a crime. For days he agonizes over whether to tell any-one. Meanwhile, his friendships with a fellow skater (who is debating whether to drop out of school), a beautiful girl in his class (who loves to read, and seems to like Josh), and a cool math tutor (a college student who skates) slowly steer him toward a new kind of courage.

Josh has a mesmerizing narrator’s voice; he rattles off a vacuous Valley-speak while slowly coming into his own, intellectually and morally. There is a hint of Holden Caufi eld about him. Vivid descriptions of skateboarding throughout the book will keep any skateboarder glued to the page. And a plot that rolls ahead constantly will maintain the reader’s attention, while inter-mittently sneaking in a few lessons from English and math class, which serve to advance the story. (References to math in skateboard ramp design; plus small epiphanies from Lord of the Flies , Antigone , and Of Mice and Men .) Josh starts out as a school-hating dude and slowly comes around to seeing that he can skate and be smart . . . and a decent person.

Vertical will be loved by kids and by parents and teachers.

eBook ISBN: 978-1-935955-42-9 W A Cadillac takes an ornery old black man and an angry white teenager down a road neither has traveled before.

Alex Riley has just turned sixteen. He lives with his mother. His top prior-ities in life are to fi nd his father and a girl with a decent set of breasts. His mother has a knack for sabotaging his plans. To advance her political career, she takes in an elderly black man named Lester Bray. Lester arrives with a cherry Cadillac and an old man’s personality. It takes only a week for Alex’s mother to ask Lester to leave. That makes Alex angry. On the morning of his eviction, Lester and Alex set out on a road trip, ostensibly to fi nd the boy’s father in Fort Lauderdale. But the two don’t just head south. They also cross through un-navigated political, racial, and personal territory. A wild ride, Cadillac Chronicles explores what it means to—fi nally—fi nd a real friend.

Brett Hartman lived an unremarkable life in Fort Lauderdale until May 18, 1983, when he was arrested for aggravated battery. While away at Auburn Uni-versity, he suff ered a psychotic breakdown and months of intensive treatment. Though he made a full recovery, the events of that period never left him. He continued his education at Indiana State, where he received a doctorate in clinical psychology; he has worked as a psychologist ever since. His memoir Hammerhead 84 covers his journey through the mental health industry. Cadillac Chronicles is his debut novel. He lives in Albany, New York, with his wife and their two sons.

eBook ISBN: 978-1-935955-30-6 W Can a pair of sisters be too generous with each other?

Only if their mother doesn’t say a word.

Mamá says she has the best daughters in the world. The two women live near their mother—Rosa with her husband and children, Blanca by herself. They both have fl ourishing gardens. Rosa and Blanca are so generous and kind and thoughtful—well, everyone, including Mamá, ends up with too much corn, tomatoes, and red hot chiles! It’s crazy! It’s also Joe Hayes at his fi nest, tell-ing one of those stories young kids love, full of mishaps, surprise endings, and happy mommas! In fact, one seven-year old—after hearing Joe tell Don’t Say a Word, Mamá! —came home and told her mother, “I heard a story today that I think changed my life!” That’s a pretty fantastic endorsement!

Joe Hayes has been enchanting listeners and readers alike for over thirty years. His books have received many awards including two Land of Enchantment Children’s Book Awards and an Aesop Accolade Award. His books have also been on the Texas Bluebonnet Award Master List three times. Ghost Fever won the Texas Bluebonnet Award for 2006–2007.

Esau Andrade Valencia comes from a family of folk artists. He is increasingly being recognized as a master artist in the tradition of Diego Rivera and Rufi no Tamayo. His paintings are included in the collection of the Museum of Latin American Art in Long Beach, California, as well as in the Downey Museum of Art in Downey, California.

978-1-59270-123-0 W* Ages 9 and up A 1940s New York City boy talks with Piet Mondrian, whom he knows

only as Mr. Orange, about the war, the future, creativity, and color.

The year: 1943. The place: Manhattan. Mr. Orange is told from the perspective of Linus Muller, the third of six children, whose parents own a grocery store. Linus’ oldest brother Albie volunteers to fi ght in World War II, and it’s his de-parture that sets the story in motion. When Albie leaves, Linus takes on new responsibilities, including grocery deliveries to customers. Among his cus-tomers is a man who has come from Europe and is an artist, but Linus never quite catches his name, so he calls him Mr. Orange for the crate of fruit he de-livers to him every other week. The book revolves around Linus’ experience of the war through his brother’s departure and the conversations he has with Mr. Orange about war, heroes, the future, and the freedom to create. Only at the end does Linus learn that the artist was Piet Mondrian. Linus thus discov-ers that the incredible infl uence Mr. Orange has had on him and the sense of possibility that he has given to him is also a gift he has given to others and to the future through his work.

Truus Matti is a Dutch editor and author. Her fi rst book, Departure Time, was a 2011 Batchelder Honor Book, an ALA Notable Book of 2011, and received starred reviews in Kirkus Reviews and School Library Journal. Mr. Orange is her sec-ond book.

A clever, sensitive story that explores the difference between what people say and think in a smart and imaginative way.

One day, Nora returns home from kindergarten upset because a boy in her class told her that she has the legs of a fl amingo! When her mother gives her a magic wand to read people’s minds, a new and fascinating world opens for her. She discovers that people don’t always say what they think or think what they say. Full of generosity and humor, Nora the Mind Reader is a beautifully imaginative book that illustrates the potential divide between thoughts and words in a clear and thoughtful way.

Orit Gidali was born in 1974. Her fi rst book was published in 2003, and her second in 2006. Both titles are poetry books. Orit lives in Rehovot, Israel, is married to the poet Alex Ben-Ari, and is the mother of Hallel, Noa, Ofri, and Aner. Nora the Mind Reader is Orit’s fi rst picture book.

Aya Gordon-Noy is an illustrator and graphic designer. Aya graduated with distinction from the department of graphic design at Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in 1996 and was awarded the Yossi Stem prize for illustration.

Imaginative, playful, and funny, Pomelo Explores Color is all about exploration and the experience of seeing color anew.

Imaginative, playful, and funny, Pomelo Explores Color is all about discovery and the experience of seeing color anew.

In this humorous and emotionally astute exploration of color, Pomelo looks about and discovers twelve colors in all their nuance. He encounters the infi nite white of falling snow, the hypnotizing red of love, and the shadowy blue of the unknown. The colors describe our concrete world, but also refl ect emotional states, as well as the curious, oddball sensibility of our dear Pomelo.

Ramona Badescu was born in 1980 in southern Romania. She arrived in France at the age of eleven and started to write for children ten years later. She lives in the wonderfully diverse French city of Marseille.

Benjamin Chaud lives and works in Paris, France. He has illustrated an im-pressive number of picture books and has written at least one as well.

In his fi rst wordless picture book, Olivier Tallec shows the pointlessness of war through his smart, comic, emotionally astute illustrations.

In this impressive, expressive roll of visual storytelling, Olivier Tallec portrays two characters, separated by only narrow walls, who spy on each other through the seasons. Moving between day and night, long stretches at their binoculars, and mundane daily tasks, they fi ght their cold war, full of suspicion, never daring to bridge the gap between them. Then, one day, they discover that their diff erences don’t make them enemies and that a whole other way of being in the world together is possible.

Waterloo & Trafalgar is a subtle picture book, marked by true comic humor, that shows how pointless war actually is.

Olivier Tallec was born in Brittany, France, in 1970. After graduating from the École Supérieure d’Art Graphique in Paris, he worked in advertising as a graphic designer before devoting himself to illustration. In this quiet, sad, but ultimately incandescent picture book, we meet a gentle, steady father who calms his anxious son.

It’s quieter than it’s ever been. Unable to sleep, a young boy climbs into his father’s arms. Feeling the warmth and closeness of his father, he begins to ask questions about the birds, the foxes, and whether his mom will ever wake up. They go outside under the starry sky. Loss and love are as present as the white spruces, while the father’s clear answers and assurances calm his worried son. Here we feel the cycles of life and life’s continuity, even in the face of absence and loss, so strongly and clearly that we know at the end that everything will somehow, be all right.

Born in 1953, Stein Erik Lunde has written sixteen books, mostly for chil-dren and young adults. His books have been published in many countries. This is his fi rst book to be published in the United States. He also writes lyrics and has translated Bob Dylan into Norwegian. In 2009 My Father’s Arms Are A Boat was awarded the Norwegian Ministry’s Culture Prize for the Best Book for Children and Youth. The book was also nominated for the 2011 German Children’s Literature Award.

Born in 1972, Øyvind Torseter is an artist and one of Norway’s most ac-claimed illustrators. He employs both traditional and digital picture tech-niques. Torseter has received numerous prizes for many of his books. In 2011 he received the Norwegian Book Art Prize. For 2012 he has been nominated for the ALMA Award and the Hans Christian Andersen Award.

Calvin and Hobbes meet the Time Machine!

“Remember as a kid when possibilities seemed endless and a cardboard box could transform into a fort, a tank, a mountain, or a Super Mario pipe? . . . Justin Time is a new animated program for pre-schoolers that brings that bound-less creativity to the small screen. The show centers on Justin, a young boy who imagines himself traveling around the world at diff erent points in history.”—Torontoist

“Tired of preschool cartoons spending an inordinate amount of time on bor-ing matching games, talking down its audience, or afraid of going out on a creative limb? If so, then meet Justin Time . . . . The series is about trust and teamwork—whether nestled deep in the jungle or perched high on top of a snowcapped mountain—and the many other elements of friendship most conducive to having a great time (and learning a thing or two along the way). Justin Time encourages a kind of freewheeling imagination that hopes to leave the didactic and lazy storytelling of yester-animation in the dust.”—Animation Insider

This debut series is based on episodes from a new animated television show (airing on PBS Sprout in the United States April 2012 and Disney Junior in Canada September 2012).

All aboard! Justin and his pal Squidgy imagine themselves behind the wheel of a classic steam train, delivering important cargo for their friend Olive. But they discover it’s not easy getting through the Canadian wilderness. Will their barrel of maple syrup make it to Flap Jack Falls in time for the Pancake Festival? Never give up!

In a world with too many rules, Wild Child is free to be herself, doing and learning as she pleases .

“ A Rule Is To Break says: Go ahead and throw your best self a party! So glad it exists.”—Kristin Hersh (Throwing Muses)

“After encountering the lively little anarchist in John and Jana’s delightful A Rule Is To Break , I will always remember the playful little devil with a mind of her own. A children’s book on anarchy seems somehow just right: an instinc-tive, intuitive sense of fairness, community, and interdependence sits natu-rally enough with a desire for participatory democracy, self-determination, and peace and global justice.”—Bill Ayers, author of To Teach: The Journey in Comics and Fugitive Days

Simply celebrating childhood: the joy, the wonder of discovery, the spontane-ity, and strong emotions. . . . Wild Child is free to do as she pleases. A Rule Is To Break: A Child’s Guide to Anarchy follows Wild Child as she learns about just being herself and how that translates into kid autonomy. It presents the ideas of challenging societal expectations and tradition and expressing yourself freely in kid-terms that are both funny and thought provoking—it even functions as a guidebook for adults to understand what it is to be a critically thinking, crea-tive individual. Wild Child is the role model for disobedience that is some-times civil.

John Seven and Jana Christy ’s previous collaboration The Ocean Story won Creative Child magazine’s 2011 Creative Child Award Seal of Excellence and was shortlisted for the 2012 Green Earth Book Award.

Set in Persia, Night Letter is a tale of slavery, mysticism, and a damsel in distress determined to save herself.

“Intrigues, a kidnapping, and an exciting rescue attempt kept me turning the pages of this engrossing novel.”—Marilyn Carpenter, PhD, professor emeritus, Eastern Washington University, founder of The Children’s Book Compass

Anahita, a nomadic weaver living in nineteenth-century Iran, is kidnapped on the eve of her wedding and thrown into the world of slavery and the mysti-cal Sufi faith. Tinged with the fairy tale quality of her award-winning Anahita’s Woven Riddle , Meghan Nuttall Sayres weaves details of Persian culture with po-etry to create the story of a damsel in distress determined to save herself.

The book includes a discussion and study guide, Persian interior art, and cover art by award-winning Tehran-based artist Rashin Kheirieh.

Meghan Nuttall Sayres is a tapestry weaver who has traveled in Turkey, Iran, and Central Asia, where she has met with scholars, carpet weavers, dye-masters, and merchants to study the age-old techniques, symbolism, and Sufi poetry that infuse many rugs woven throughout the Middle East. While re-searching Night Letter Meghan traveled by train across the deserts of Uzbekistan to the ancient cities of Samarkand and Bukhara, plotting scenes and imag-ining Anahita’s possible escape routes. Other books by Meghan include Weaving Tapestry in Rural Ireland and Daughters of the Desert: Tales of Remarkable Women From the Christian, Jewish and Muslim Traditions (as a co-author). She is also editor of the anthology Love and Pomegranates: Artists and Wayfarers on Iran . Meghan lives in Washington state.

“An engrossing story that weaves in Persian culture, history, and surround-ings, and portrays the life of a unique young woman and her quest for love.”— School Library Journal

“ Anahita’s Woven Riddle off ers a glimpse into a world not many books enter. Sayres does an excellent job developing characters that intrigue and tug at the heart.”— Historical Novels Review

When Anahita, a nomadic weaver in nineteenth-century Iran, learns that her father wants her to wed the leader of her tribe—a man she fi nds repulsive—she designs her own fate by weaving a riddle into her wedding carpet, which suit-ors must guess to win her hand.

Anahita’s Woven Riddle includes a discussion and study guide, Persian interior art, and brand new cover art by award-winning Tehran-based artist Rashin Kheirieh. She is pictured below, along with her sketches of the covers of Night Letter and Anahita’s Woven Riddle.

Meghan Nuttall Sayres ’ debut novel Anahita’s Woven Riddle has been trans-lated into several languages. Six new earthbound and airy stories from a two-time winner of both the Carnegie Medal and Whitbread Award.

Praise for Peter Dickinson’s children’s books:

“One of the real masters of children’s literature.”—Philip Pullman

“Peter Dickinson is a national treasure.”— The Guardian

“Magnifi cent. Peter Dickinson is the past-master story-teller of our day.”— The Times Literary Supplement

In three earthy and three airy stories, Peter Dickinson’s changelings, gry-phons, and gods get in the way of the rest of us who are struggling to fi nd someone to fall in love with, something interesting to do, somewhere to run to. These are smart, funny, provocative stories, but even as they fl oat the reader away on a cloud of myth, they remain fi rmly grounded. Includes a fore-word by the author.

Peter Dickinson is the author of over fi fty books including Eva , Emma Tupper’s Dairy , and the Michael L. Printz Honor Book The Ropemaker . He has twice re-ceived the Crime Writers’ Association’s Gold Dagger as well as the Guardian Award and Whitbread Prize. He lives in England and is married to the novel-ist Robin McKinley.
