Saying Farewell
This month we say goodbye to two of the world's warmest and loveliest peoplewho are also often among the first people many students meet at LIHSA:Barbara DelMonaco and Deborah (Nurse Debbie) Holbrook.
Barbara DelMonaco
We are marking an end of an era on ourcampus as we bid happy trails to a LIHSAstalwart: Barbara DelMonaco. Barbara beganher tenure at BOCES in 1989 as a teacher’saide at the Pasadena School, then moved toEast Broadway followed by Baldwin Harbor inthe Nurse’s office. She came to LIHSA in thesummer of 1994 as a health aide, laterbecoming a secretary in October 1994 whereshe has officially served in the capacity ofSenior Stenographer.
Her wisdom has been an invaluableresource. Barbara really does knoweverybody and everything, and she knowshow to get things done within BOCES –which is no easy feat! A favor askedby Barbara will always be answered with a ‘yes’, because she’s the kind ofperson who’s unquestionably respected.
If we were able to sum up the overall impression Barbara’s presence at LIHSA,it would boil down to capable, helpful, generous, and cheerful.
Most striking, is how dedicated she was to the mission and ideals of LIHSA.She has been at every performance handing out programs and laying outrefreshments. Barbara showed that you can make a difference in a student’slife by the day to day things you do for them. Those small things work togetherto make a big difference in the lives of others.
Barbara DelMonaco will leave a great gap in the LIHSA community that will noteasily be filled.
Deborah Holbrook
A longstanding member of the LIHSAcommunity, Deborah Holbrook is LIHSA’sbeloved nurse. She will be retiring this yearafter decades of service to the School. NurseDebbie is so much more than just a nurse. Sheis the advisor to the Student Council, theorganizer of the prom, she sells bagels, arranges candy grams and does countlessother spirited jobs around the school. She is atevery performance, helping with whatever isneeded. She has served as a member of ourStudent Support Team and in the past on ourSite Based Committee. She is a singular human
being and a fixture at LIHSA. In her capacity as Nurse, she has done a greatjob balancing the many needs of our students. From sprains, fractures, colds and flu to acutemental health situations, Nurse Debbie is calmand collected when in crisis. She knows justwhat to do and puts everyone at ease. As a colleague, her friendly voice and lunchesin the staff room will be sorely missed. She inmany ways holds the history of the School andwe she will leave a hole in the fabric of LIHSAupon her departure.
