MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT
It doesn’t seem like it should already be time for my last District Message of the year. Each school year
goes by faster than the last. May and June are always an exciting time of year in our District with
concerts, plays and spring activities filling the calendar and, of course, our seniors are counting down the
days to graduation and enjoying the many traditions that go along with senior year. We wish all the
seniors congratulations and well wishes as they move on to the next chapter of their lives.
As the school year winds down, it’s a good time to reflect on the many outstanding accomplishments of
our students and staff. The following is just a sampling:
Four LHS students were named National Merit Finalists and two named Commended Scholars.
An LHS student was named to the National Honor Orchestra.
Harding’s Mock Trial teams earned a Superior rating at the statewide Middle School Mock Trial
Showcase and earned eight out of a possible eight awards.
Two LHS/West Shore students earned national awards in the Scholastic Art & Writing Contest
Two Garfield students earned first place in their category at the Northeast Ohio Science &
Engineering Fair
Dozens of our music students from elementary through high school were selected for Honors
Choirs, Orchestras and Bands at regional and state levels.
One of our LHS students had his PTA Reflections piece judged best in the state and will compete
at the national level
Finally, the final phase of our school rebuilding project is moving along with all three elementary schools
razed and demolition under way at the high school. Look for buildings to begin to rise this summer. It’s
an exciting time for the Lakewood City Schools and our community!

Guidance News
Seniors
The time of year is approaching where you are deciding what
your post-secondary plans will be. Please be sure to fill out
the forms for final transcript information and any scholarships
you have received. This is Lakewood High School’s chance
to brag to the community about all of your accomplishments!
Please return these 2 forms to Mrs. Diamond ASAP.
Also, remember all of the scholarship opportunities that are
on the table outside of the Guidance office!
Juniors
Spring is the best time to start building your activities resume
and looking at the essay prompts for the Common App. It is
also a good time to take college tours and decide if you
would like to go to a bigger school, smaller, commute, travel,
etc.! Stop in to start that conversation with your Guidance
Counselor before you leave in June. Below are the 2015-
2016 essay prompts:
1. Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds
like you, then please share your story.
2. The lessons we take from failure can be fundamental to later success. Recount an incident or time when you experienced failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience?
3. Reflect on a time when you challenged a belief or idea. What prompted you to act? Would you make the same decision again?
4. Describe a problem you've solved or a problem you'd like to solve. It can be an intellectual challenge, a research query, and an ethical dilemma-anything that is of personal importance, no matter the scale. Explain its significance to you and what steps you took or could be taken to identify a solution.
5. Discuss an accomplishment or event, formal or informal that marked your transition from childhood to adulthood within your culture, community, or family.
Sophomores and Freshmen
It is never too early to start thinking about what you would like to do after high school. Be sure to
meet with your guidance counselor at least one more time this year to follow up on your requests for
scheduling and thoughts about what you plan to do after graduation.
Sincerely, The LHS Guidance Staff For more information visit the Guidance Department home page

Hey seniors –
Relax all the way to prom AND save some cash. Your prom venue, Windows on the River, will
