From the Principal’s Desk
Welcome back to Term 2! It has been so wonderful to
see our students’ smiles and hear their laughter around
school again. It certainly was a strange place to be at the
end of Term 1, with only a handful of children around. We
have had a busy and productive start to the term.
Our new cleaning procedures are well underway and working well. I would
like to give a huge thanks to our cleaning team of Sharon, Kath, Kylie and
Genista, and our gardener, Sam, for being so accommodating and going above
and beyond to make sure our school is clean and safe!!
Thank you to our amazing community for following the guidelines expected of
us all and not coming into the school grounds. Drop off and pick up has been
running very smoothly across the school. I have even had quite a few parents
comment on how much easier the morning is now!
Covid-19 Update
As I write, I am awaiting an update from the Minister for Education regarding
what arrangements will be in place for beyond Week 4. As all schools in
Western Australia have re-opened this term with minimal issues, I do not
foresee any major changes on this front. It will be the element of parent
choice to keep children at home that I think will be discussed, and whether or not this will continue.
There will also be changes to what Semester 1 reports will look like. At this stage, the only information I have is that
there will be no grades issued on reports, however, you will receive feedback on how your child has been progressing
over the semester.
As soon as I have further information on any changes I will send this to you all.
I encourage you to keep in touch with your child’s teacher via email or Connect
if you have any queries about how they are doing at school. We are planning to
send some weekly updates to you via Connect, so you are able to hear about
what has been going on in your child’s class.

Enrolments
We are currently taking enrolments for Kindergarten and Pre-Primary in 2021.
Enrolments for Kindy close on Friday 31 July (Week 2, Term 3). I encourage you to get
your enrolment in as soon as possible. Please contact our fabulous office ladies for an
application.
We are Transitioning to Electronic Newsletters
This will be our last newsletter that is printed and sent home with students. Our next newsletter will be sent to you
directly via our Connect app. A hard copy of the newsletter will be available for you to pick up from the office, should
you require it.
As a part of being a more sustainable and environmentally friendly school, there are
significant cost savings for us as a school by moving to electronic communication. As
all of our parent community is now on our Connect list, this is a simple and direct way
for you to receive the newsletter.
Have a fantastic weekend. Stay well and stay safe.
Ms Cathy Willis, Principal

RISE Reward Week 5
In Week 5 students in Good Standing will have extra play time as a reward for demonstrating RISE qualities at school.
Virtual Assembly
Our students are becoming experts at adjusting to doing things a little differently! Last Friday we held our first Virtual Assembly. Filming of Acknowledgement of Country, Principal Address, Student Leader reports, RISE Draw and Merit Certificates occurred on Wednesday. Mr Evans then kindly edited and made the assembly available on USB for classrooms to watch. Teachers then handed out their certificates while watching. The School Song was also made
available for students to sing with their class mates. Well done APS! Mr Reece Smith, Deputy Principal

Health News Influenza
Influenza, or the ‘flu’ is caused by an influenza virus. It
is spread through the air when someone coughs,
sneezes or talks. It is also spread by touching
something that has the virus on it and then touching
your nose, eyes or mouth. Common symptoms include
sore throat, cough, fever, headache, chills, tiredness
and muscle aches.
People with the flu should rest and drink plenty of fluid.
Use paracetamol in recommended doses if necessary -
but do not give children any medication containing
aspirin.
Be sure to keep your child home from school while he
or she is sick. If you require school work for your child
contact the school to prepare some for you to collect.
The best way to prevent flu from spreading is by
washing your hands regularly and after coughing,
sneezing or blowing your nose.
Why should I consider having my child vaccinated
against the flu?
The National Health and Medical Research Council,
Australia's peak body for health advice, recommends
annual vaccination for anyone six months of age or
older who wants to reduce their chances of becoming
ill with the flu.
Annual flu vaccination is strongly recommended for
anyone six months of age or older with a medical
condition that places them at higher risk of severe
illness from flu. Children and adults with heart, lung or
kidney disease or a weakened immune system, are
eligible for free flu vaccine through the National
Immunisation Program.
Children without underlying medical conditions who
become infected with flu can also develop serious
illnesses. Flu can cause high fever and pneumonia, and
make existing medical conditions worse. Flu can also
cause convulsions and diarrhoea in children. This year
the flu vaccine is also available free for Primary
School Aged children (Kindy to Year 6) as part of the
National Immunisation Program.
Influenza viruses are always changing. Each year
scientists try to match the strains of influenza viruses
in the vaccine to those most likely to cause flu illnesses
that year. It takes up to two weeks for protection to
develop after vaccination against flu and protection
lasts about a year.
The seasonal flu vaccine is available on prescription or
via GP’s and immunisation clinics and is provided free
for certain groups. For more information visit
healthywa.wa.gov.au/immunisation or contact your GP
or Immunisation Clinic. The Warden Avenue
Immunisation Clinic provides appointments Tuesday
morning and afternoon and Thursday mornings by
appointment and can be contacted on 9892 2499.

Library News In Week 4 the school library will be closed so that the carpet can be replaced. If your child has any overdue books, please ensure they return them as soon as possible to assist us to organise our resources over that time. Thank you.

Room 9 - ideas for home activities!
Over the last month the children in Room 9 have been busy both at school and at home! Here are some examples of home activities from some of our busy students.
Alby and his brother made a birdfeeder, Fletcher and his
sister helped their family on the farm, Jace drew a
beautiful rainbow, Leilani was doing Cosmic yoga, Nina did
some home learning on a laptop with her pal Paddington,
and Tristan used Playing Cards as part of his home
learning.
Thank you so much for sharing your photos with us!

Room 18 – Mother’s Day Project
For Mother’s Day Room 18 made keyrings for their Mums using clay beads. Here are the steps we had to follow to make our gifts:
1. First we picked the colours of the clay. 2. Then we rolled the clay into beads and flattened the sides. 3. After that we used a toothpick to make a hole in the middle of each bead. 4. Then Miss Gurney baked the beads in the oven for 15 minutes. 5. Next we put the clasp on the top of the wire and twisted it to secure it. 6. Following that we threaded the beads onto the wire. 7. Finally, we placed 2 crimps on the end and used pliers to squeeze them.
Written by Room 18. “I really liked the colours I used for my Mother’s Day beads” – Angus “I tried to find the brightest colours and I loved how it turned out” – Oliver “My Mum likes green and black so it was a good Mother’s Day gift” – Will C “It was fun moulding the clay into beads” – Shae “This was a good craft because my Mum was due for a new keychain” – Emma “I really hope my Mum likes the gift” – Lucy
Room 5 – Mother’s Day Craft The students in Room 5 produced some bright and colourful gifts for their mothers last week. All of the images were so heartfelt and creative, it was very hard to select only a few to show here. Thank you for sharing this work with us Mrs MacNish!
