Dear Parents and Caregivers, It has been a wonderful first week back at school after my long service leave. I have really enjoyed sharing my travel adventures with some of the classes. I would like to thank Mrs Griffiths and Mr McNee for their leadership while I was away. While I was away, I was extremely thrilled to hear the news that our school had made vast improvements in our NAPLAN results. This achievement has occurred through the work of all teachers and an increased focus on working with students to set learning goals and monitor their own levels of achievement. I would like to congratulate and thank my staff who have been united in their approach to making sure every child is progressing and achieving to their potential. We have a number of new families starting with us this term and I would like to welcome them to the Da-kabin Community. This term has started with excitement with a number of school events on the horizon. Firstly, our student council are running a fundraiser to support drought affected areas in Queensland. With the support of Trevor Ruthenburg, our local Member of Parliament, we are holding a “Whip around Win-
ton” dress up day where students, staff and parents are encouraged to come in “country attire” of boots, jeans, checked shirts and big hats!!! Bring a gold coin donation to support the township of Winton. The funds are going to support the Royal Flying Doctor Mental Health initiative and the Winton CWA to support women in the bush. This fundraiser will be held on Thursday 16 October. Our second big event is an arts performance called The Wonderful World of Roald Dahl. This famous children’s author wrote many classic favourites including Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The BFG, George’s Marvellous Medicine and many others. This performance is on Wednesday 15th October. Please make sure payments and permission forms are returned to the office. Cost is $8 per child and no refunds are available. The last date for payments is Tuesday 14th October at 9:30am. Swimming for our students in Prep to Year 3 starts later this term. Information letters went out late last term in regards to alerting parents of this program. The total cost is $72.50. Invoices will be sent home with per-mission letters next week. As this is a significant cost to parents, please remember you can enter a pay-ment plan through Nichole Meehan the Business Services Manager in the office. Term 4 is usually an action packed term with these kinds of events along with Celebration Evening, Year 6/7 Graduation, the Interhouse Choir Competition and Christmas Carols. Date Claimers will be in the news-letters in coming weeks to let parents know these exact dates. In the coming weeks we will be starting our preparations for 2015. There will be more information in the newsletter next week about our 2015 procedures. Have a great week ! Kelly Jeppesen Principal

CHAPPY’S CHAT – 10 OCTOBER 2014 A special welcome to all of the new Dakabin families. And a welcome back to everyone else for Term 4! As many of you are aware, I am in my last term as chaplain here at the school. Chappy Beck Holloway is excited to be back in 2015! The good news is that I won’t be leaving completely. I have accepted a role at Rivers Church of Christ, Kallangur (where the Underground youth group is) and will be able to assist Chappy Beck with chap-laincy activities in 2015. This means I will still be popping in once a week to see the stu-dents and assist Chappy Beck in any way I can. Chappy’s Quote of the Week: “The struggle you’re in today is developing the strength you need for tomorrow” (Robert Tew). Over the school holidays, I had a number of things I wanted to achieve, but didn’t, e.g. my car still looks like it has just driven the 70km dirt road to Year 4 Camp! In fact, I didn’t have much of a holiday at all, as many unexpected events occurred. We can’t con-trol these events. No one can. But we can control how we respond. My car still looks like something out of a muddy 4WD ad, but I have spent quality time with family and friends. And that’s what matters.
Chappy Josh ☺
Whip round for Winton Winton is a town in central west-ern Queensland that has been suf-fering from drought recently. Thursday the 16th October, the Student Council and Miss Paoletti will be holding a “country-themed” Just Dance in the hall at first break. Students will be allowed to dress up as a cowboy, farmer or something western-related on the day for a gold coin donation (or more if you can afford it). Be creative: maybe you could dress up as a horse or another animal!) Let’s dig deep to help our western cousins who are in such enormous need. Remember, we’d love to raise $1000. Loose change collection will happen each morning of week 2 at the front gates. Please give what you can. We look forward to seeing you in costume!.
Swimming Program Term 4 2014 The swimming program is for
students in Prep, Year 1, 2 and 3.

and Fridays commencing on Thursday November 6
and continuing each Thursday and Friday for four
weeks and concluding on Friday November 28.

are sent home.
