) Youth Mental Health First-Aid Course

Next Thursday and Friday (July 27th & 28th) our College will host a Youth Mental Health First Aid Course, which is provided by Bendigo Loddon Primary Care Partnership and facilitated by Mr Greg Currie. We have 14 College and Community members taking part in the 2 day course which will be conducted in the College’s Multipurpose Room and be catered for by our terrific Parent Association. The course will be held from 9:00am - 4:00pm each day and we are really happy to be able to open our doors to the College Community once again. ‘New-look’ Newsletter You may or may not have already noticed that the front page of our newsletter has been slightly altered as of this edition. Slight changes to the presentation of borders and the addition of flags and content to the top panel have slightly changed the visual appearance of the newsletter, and we would be most keen to receive feedback via the College Office. Lions Club Public Speaking Competition I will be very brief here, as Mr Vernon has included a much more detailed report of the Lions Club Public Speaking Competition in this newsletter and I encourage you to take the time to read it. May I just say that our 6 representatives on Tuesday evening were simply outstanding in their efforts, poise and

delivery of speeches!!! I would also like to say thanks to our wonderful Lions (particularly Jo Guthrie) for another

terrific competition, and this year’s judges (Kaye Leech and Sue Lea) for their time, expertise and efforts on the

night.

Thanks from the College are also extended to Mr Ron Vinnicombe who will shortly finish up his 2 year tenure as Lions Club President, before handing over to Mr Jim Hercus for the next 2 years. We have thoroughly enjoyed working with Ron in his time as President and also look forward to a positive working relationship with Jim in the future. New Breakfast Program Signage Out with the old and in with the new! We were delighted this week to see a new and much improved sign for our College break-fast program. A tremendous group of volunteers, along with dedicated College staff pro-vide a wonderful breakfast spread on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, with over 3 quarters of our students benefiting from this nutritious start to the day. Colour Optics have been great supporters of this program and we thank them very much for their ongoing support and donation of this fancy new sign! Mr Ferguson Finishes Up I made mention of student teacher, Mr Tom Ferguson in the last edition of this newsletter, noting that he had one more day of placement to complete with the College. Mr Ferguson spent the day in our College on Tuesday and officially finished with us following this last day. We hope to see much more of Mr Ferguson in the future and wish him all the very best for his career in teaching! College Council – Finance Training The College will host a School Council Finance Training module next Wednesday evening with a great deal of our College Councillors to be in attendance, along with Councillors from Boort and Inglewood schools. The evening will be facilitated by Mr John Sloan, with catering by East Loddon Community House.

Well Done Hannah R!

On the 8th of July, Hannah travelled to Elmore to compete in an interschool’s

horse event. Hannah had 21 riders in her section and competed in show-

jumping, which consisted of two rounds at the height of 75cm. In the first

round she had one rail down and came in 8th. In the second round she got

clear and came 2nd.

What a great result. Well done, Hannah!

I hope that all of our students were able to enjoy a great holiday period!

Lions Club Junior Public Speaking Competition

On Tuesday evening teachers, families and finalist from Years 3-6 attended the local level of the Public Speaking Competition in

the Lions Clubrooms.

Representing Years 3 and 4 were; Marley Tori and Keira and there topic related to an altered fairy story.

Representing Years 5 and 6 were Libby, Jade and Steph. The topic selected for this age group was pitching a story for a specific

age group, presented from the perspective of the author. This group was also required to present an impromptu speech relating

to ‘ A law you believe should be introduced’.

The standard of the presentations was extremely high at both levels and, as a College, we were very proud of all the participating

students.

Our winners on the evening were: Libby and Marley.

We take this opportunity to extend our thanks to the Lions Club for their hospitality and for organising this valuable learning op-

portunity. In particular, we would like to thank Mrs Jo Guthrie who organises the event each year.

Assistant Principals News

Welcome back to everyone after our winter break. I was lucky enough to have three weeks off after taking some

long service and travelling abroad for three weeks with family and friends. We travelled to the USA spending most

time in California (LA, Vegas, San Francisco) and some time in Arizona (Grand Canyon). Trivia Question: What’s the

capital of California? We then visited Mexico and Cuba. Cuba is an island country, just south of the USA and it is in a

lot of ways, stuck in time, due to the fact that countries stopped trading with them during the 1950’s when Cuba

had a revolution led by Che Guevara and Fidel Castro. I have never seen so many old cars chugging around the

streets. It made my Fairlane look new. Other than that my holiday was pretty dull.

This week, we have gotten off to a flyer. So far we have had a senior Biology excursion, Year 6 netball tournament

in Bendigo, Lions Junior Public Speaking and Loddon Mallee Cross Country in Bundoora. Tomorrow we have a Ger-

man Poetry Competition in Bendigo and Years 10/11 are off to Melbourne for a jobs expo. It would be hard to ac-

cuse us of sitting still. It’s pretty busy next week too.

We have booked a Parent Teacher Student Interview day after suggestions from some to hold this earlier than usu-

al. Students are required at school all day on that day and buses will run as normal. The date set is Tuesday the 1 st

of August from 1:30 pm – 5:30 pm. Ten minute interviews can be booked with any or all of your child’s teachers.

This will be a good time to touch base about recent reports and potentially areas to concentrate on between now

and the end of the year. We hope to see you all there.

Scott Wilkinson.

Performing Arts Update

This term sees big things happening in the Arts Domain with our College Production and other musical opportu-nities for our students.

This year our College Production has a ‘time’ focus that will see each year level deliver an act from a decade between the 1910s and today. The students have been busy planning these acts throughout Term 2 and begin their rehearsals this term. Please add Wednesday 20th September into your calendar as an important date to remember. Some students will soon receive a letter with more details about the props and costumes required for each act. Year 12 students Tom B, Nick K, Cyan N will represent our College in early August as they record two songs as part of a 12 track album created by schools within the Loddon Shire. This project is largely funded by the Shire and will see our students gain valuable experience in a professional recording studio working with experience sound technicians. This album will be available to purchase later in the year. On Friday 15th September, musical group Zeeko will be attending our school to give a special performance to Year P-6 students as part of their Musica Viva school tour. Over the course of an hour, the musicians of Zeeko will perform songs about fast food, golden frogs and the deep ocean. Their music is influenced by bluegrass, Caribbean and jazz musical genres, with instruments include vocals, guitar, bass and percussion, as well as glass bottles, squeaky toys and body percussion. This performance will follow lessons undertaken in music classes and has strong connections to literacy, numeracy and integrated studies. I am very excited to have Zeeko attend our wonderful College. Finally, planning is currently being undertaken for Year 6 and 7 students to attend an excursion to the Mel-bourne Arts Centre in early Term 4 to attend ‘music composition’ and ‘science of sound’ workshops related to Year 6 Performing Arts and Year 7 Science. This excursion will be heavily funded by the Melbourne Arts Centre Rural Schools Program and is an exciting opportunity for students to apply the knowledge and understandings they have learnt in the classroom to real-world experiences.

Middle Years Captains Report

This week we’ve had lots of students representing the school from the Middle Years; there’s been Public Speak-ing, Year 6 Netball and Bridget V competed in the State Cross Country. The German Poetry Competition is tomor-row, good luck to everyone involved. We hope you all had a great start to the term and a great holiday. Zoe and Oscar

Somers Camp—1st—9th August Parent’s of students heading to Somers Camp will be receiving a letter early next week outlining pick up and drop off time and locations for Somers Camp starting a week on Tuesday. German Poetry Competition Good luck to Isaac, Charlize, Amy, Steph, Josh, Bridget, Kaylah, Brittney, Lily, Victoria, Zoe L and Georgia who will be participating in the AGTV German Poetry Competition at BSE on Friday. State Cross Country All the best to Bridget V who is representing East Loddon at the State Cross Country today. Good luck. Year 8 English Students are coming home today with permission forms for ‘The Boy in Striped Pyjamas’ film, which we will be watching next week as part of our comparative unit. After reading the text and watching the film students will explore the similarities and differences between the two. This is in line with the VCAA VCE curriculum of English. As per previous terms, homework is due every Monday and spelling words are to be practised over the weekend in preparation for a test on Monday also. Mrs Lethlean. . Public Speaking It was a great night at the Lion’s Den on Tuesday night. Three students from Years 3 /4 and three from Year 6 presented their speeches. The Year 6 students also had to prepare a 1 minute speech with the topic if everyone in the world had to follow one rule what would it be. The people representing East Loddon at the next level are Libby C. (Year 6) and Marley A. (Year 4) with Stephanie Demeo and Keira Tuohey as runners up and Tori Dickeson and Jade Cockerell receiving Encourage-ment Awards. By Libby C, Jade C and Stephanie D. Year 7 English Homework Students should be reading every night for at least 20 minutes aiming to read a range of different texts. It would be great if parents/guardians could quiz their child on what they've read to check comprehension and ask about tricky words to build vocabulary skills. A Skills Works sheet goes home each week for students to practice a range of English skills. This is due on Thurs-days. Spelling words begin again next week. Students are ex-pected to practice at least 3 times a week and know the meaning of each word. Spelling tests are on Thursdays. Miss Sarah Windridge.

Year 6 netball day On Wednesday 19th July the Year 6s went to the Schweppes Centre and played netball. There were two teams, a mixed team and a girls team. In the girls team there were 10 girls and they played seven games. They won 1 game and lost 6. In the mixed team there were seven boys and three girls. They won 5 of their 6 games. We all had a run day and we would like to thank Mrs Muller and Mrs Phillips for coaching us, Henry for driving the bus, Mr Young for organising the day and the Year 9 and 10 girls for coming to help us out. By Noah C, Keira L, Gemma M and Holly S.

Year 7 Science

This week the students have been learning about habi-

tats, adaptations and the process of photosynthesis. This

work forms part of their unit on food chains and food

webs.

Year 7 Science uses Edmodo on a regular basis. If you

would like assistance signing up to a ‘parent account’ for

your child, please let me know

([email protected]). This is a great

way of seeing how your child is tracking throughout the

semester and to check on overdue work. Miss Harring-

ton.

Year 8 Vis Com

Year 8’s have changed their semester Art focus to Visual

Communication and Design. In this subject, they will be

creating designs for the three design fields; communica-

tion (logos, packaging etc.), industrial design (products,

furniture etc.), and environmental (architectural, land-

scape etc.). They are already well underway to learning

the VCD language of elements and principles, with some

AWESOME mnemonics created at the end of Term 2!

Oscar, Emma, Zekie and Victoria earnt themselves a

small reward each for the efforts! I can’t wait to see what

else they come up with – what a creative class they are!

awesome

While other students were potentially sleeping in, relax-

ing and / or on holidays my Year 12 Health & Human Development class travelled with myself to La Trobe

Bundoora to attend a lecture revising the course to date and taking a sneak peak at the Unit 4 studies. I was so

impressed with the students we travelled over 450km that day, they were attentive and engaged during the

lecture and we have since been using key examples from the lecture. When I told my Mum I was taking the majority

of the class, she was so im-pressed! Well done, it’s effort

and actions like this that will bring out your best.

Pictured below are the students at the lecture, please note apolo-gies to Caity H I accidently

missed you in the photo.

New Zealand Ski Trip Sep 2018

Planning with our cluster schools for the Sep 2018 New Zealand Ski trip has started. At this stage we require an indication of students that wish to attend. The itinerary will be similar to our previous two trips. For example, approx. 7 days in Queenstown with 4 ski days and an outdoor activity day included. The cost is estimated at $2300, plus extras such food for lunch, snacks, drinks, hiring additional gear eg. googles, gloves. If students are wishing to attend a payment plan can be organised with the final deposit due July 1st 2018. This allows you time to get your kids working for the cash/holiday. “IT'S ABOUT TIME” for National Diabetes Week

Diabetes Australia’s "It’s About Time" campaign aims to raise awareness about the importance of early de-

tection and early treatment for all types of diabetes.

Too many Australians are being diagnosed with diabetes too late. This is true for both type 1 diabetes and

type 2 diabetes. The delay in diagnosis is putting many people at risk of major life threatening health prob-

lems.

“It’s About Time” we detected all types of diabetes earlier and save lives.

“It’s About Time” we knew the early signs of type 1 diabetes

Too many Australians are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes too late, over 600 people end up in hospital emer-

gency rooms each year very sick, and then find out they have type 1 diabetes.

“It’s About Time” we detected silent, undiagnosed type 2 diabetes

Up to 500,000 Australians may have silent, undiagnosed type 2 diabetes. They may have type 2 diabetes for

up to seven years before it is diagnosed. During this time, type 2 diabetes may be damaging their blood ves-

sels and nerves and causing vision loss, amputations, heart attacks, stroke and kidney damage.

For more information about Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes, check out the Diabetes Australia website www.diabetesaustralia.com.au or feel free to contact our school nurse, Denise Leed.

Parent’s Association would like to acknowledge the amazing job that everyone is doing to support our College. Whether it be organising an event; coming to meetings; teaching, attending & helping at the College; fundraising; cooking; buying school uniform, a raffle ticket, or even a tree; every dollar that is raised by Parent’s Association is returned into our College to support our children’s education. The strength and value of our involvement is sup-

ported by you, the adults, and we really appreciate your contributions, your time and your help. Thank you so so much.
