In preparation for his role as President of the American Association of Respiratory Care next year, Director of Respiratory, Pulmonary and Sleep, Frank Salvatore, Jr., recently made trips with other Respiratory Therapists to state Congressional Offices, including Senator Orin Hatch’s office (UT), Senator Chuck Schumer’s office (NY), Congressman Sander Levin’s office (MI) and Congresswoman Lynn Jenkins office (KS) as well as all seven of Connecticut’s Congressional offices. Frank is advocating for the Medicare Respiratory Therapist Access Act (HR 2619) which will allow Qualified Respiratory Therapists (RTs) to work in physician’s offices to teach self-management education for Asthma, COPD, Pulmonary Hypertension, Pulmonary Fibrosis and Cystic Fibrosis. This work is being done in order to begin trying to move RTs into venues that will help to ensure patient compliance and prevent needless use of services that are costly (i.e. - ED Visits, transportation costs, readmission, etc.). There were 150 Respiratory Therapists at the annual legislative advocacy day in Washington D.C. who made over 325 visits to congressional offices. Frank can be reached at 333-2009 or [email protected]. Simone Stein, RN, Manager of The Bone and Joint Center, was recently honored with the Outstanding Orthopaedic Nurse Practice Award at the Opening Ceremony of the National Association of Orthopaedic Nurses (NAON) 2014 Annual Congress in Las Vegas on May 17. The Outstanding Orthopaedic Nurse Practice Award recognizes a NAON member who has provided high-quality healthcare to the orthopaedic patient and has made outstanding contributions over his/her career to the field of orthopaedic nursing. Simone can be reached at 333-4150 or [email protected].

Angela Marchionni, RN, Emergency Department (holding award), was selected as EMS Educator of Excellence and Dr. Pamela Murphy (not pictured) was selected as Physician of Excellence at the Orange County EMS Awards Dinner, on May 1. Based on these recognitions, both Angela and Dr. Murphy are now in the running for Hudson Valley EMS Educator and Physician of Excellence top honors. If they win at the Hudson Valley level, they will go on to the New York State Finals. We wish them the best of luck!

NICU 2nd Reunion CelebrationCulture Of Caring And ConcernBelow is a letter from the husband of a patient who received stellar care from the time she entered our Emergency Department until she was discharged. I recently completed the Cardiac Rehab Program at Orange Regional Medical Center and I wanted to forward along kudos for Karen Harvey-Chase and Linda Knapp. Karen and Linda were absolutely amazing; they guided our group daily and helped me overcome challenges. They kept us on track and I walked away from the program being able to take a deep breath for the first time in two years. Both Karen and Linda have wonderful customer service excellence skills as well as knowing what is right for the patient. They truly go above and beyond and make the program what it is today. They should truly be recognized for making a difference in patients’ lives. The program had a true impact on my life as I had two stents back to back within 3 months, two years ago, and I struggled with being able to take a deep breath. In December, around Christmas, I took a deep breath for the first time and that was a gift, so that is why I wanted to share my positive experience.

Sincerely, Yvonne Capone

Donate Life Month Tree-planting Ceremony

On May 17, the Rowley Family Birthing Center’s Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) held its 2nd Annual NICU Reunion. Orange Regional NICU graduates, along with their parents and siblings, enjoyed a fun-filled celebration, at the Villa Venezia, that included a child friendly brunch and festivities. The event provided an opportunity for Orange Regional’s NICU staff to reunite with the babies they cared for, and the families they provided support to. Additionally, Neonatologist and Orange Regional’s NICU Site Director, Dr. Manuel DeCastro, welcomed families and visited with NICU graduates. For more information about the Rowley Family Birthing Center NICU, please call 333-6270 or visit www.ormc.org.

In collaboration with the New York Organ Donor Network, Orange Regional hosted a tree-planting and plaque dedication ceremony in honor of those who have donated their organs to help save many lives. The ceremony took place in April (Donate Life Month) in Orange Regional’s Healing Garden with representatives from the New York Organ Donor Network, Orange Regional staff and two organ donor recipients. The New York Organ Donor Network is a nonprofit, federally designated organ procurement organization (OPO) dedicated to the recovery of organs and tissue for transplant in the greater New York metropolitan area. The Network works closely with 10 transplant centers and more than 90 hospitals in the region to facilitate donations. Additionally, it raises awareness for organ, eye and tissue donation and transplantation, educates the public and encourages residents to enroll in the New York State Donate Life Registry. For more information, contact Program Administrator for Nursing Professional Practice, Deborah Hewitt, at 333-2125 or [email protected].
