Our strategy
Putting new knowledge into use in climate change hot spots
Context
$70mil. CAD over 7 years in Africa + Asia
Joint investment between DFID and IDRC, building on first
collaboration of $60mil. over 6 years in Africa (2006-2012)
Will fund 3 interdisciplinary research consortia with up to 5
members each
Consortium-led Research
Broad-based, interdisciplinary expertise for tackling complex
challenges
Long-term collective investment
Southern-led collaboration
Multiplies chances for impact
Opportunities for collective learning and knowledge co-
creation around a shared agenda
We will work in three climate change
hot spots in Africa and Asia to
Generate new
knowledge
Promote research uptake
Strengthen adaptation expertise
Our overarching aim:
To develop robust evidence on how
to increase the resilience of
vulnerable populations in climate
change hot spots in Africa and Asia.
Scaling up Good Practices
The Illimani watershed (Bolivia)
Community/scientist collaboration
Locally-led adaptation policy
development
New cadre of adaptation researchers
Sustained program outcomes
Some keys to success…
1. Ensure our work is policy relevant
2. Get our work into the right hands
3. Monitor what is working; learn from what works as we
develop
Some keys to success… 4. Assemble consortia that will help us to break new ground,
address real needs, and have a lasting influence
Global call
• Call for concept notes: early 2013
