January 20, 2017 This has been an interesting week with no school on Monday and two late start days. This winter has certainly been interesting and we seem to get just a little bit. Students were excited to have the snow and sledding was enjoyed during recess again. Just a few days ago we had no snow on the school grounds and it looked more like spring with mud. Proud of our students who have been doing NWEA testing and have been able to focus even with the change in schedules. We will reschedule any tests that were missed due to late start days next week. Tests for Grade 5 be on Monday, January 23rd and Grade 4 will be on Tuesday, January 24th. Our school district has recently had discussions about later school start times at the high school, which will affect all the schools in RSU 40. Studies have shown there are several benefits to later start times for teenagers due to changes in their sleep cycles and medical research supports the studies. RSU 40 school board of directors and school representatives from area communities met in December to discuss the possibility of this happening for the 2017-2018 school year. There will be more meetings and discussions that will be coming. Please attend the meetings to share your thoughts, questions or concerns. The RSU 40 board of directors welcome your input. Please check out the website www.startschoollater.net for further information about the research. This weekend looks like it is going to be nice weather to get out and enjoy. Have a wonderful weekend! Christina Labbe Reminder: Boots and snow pants are a must for playing in the snow! Students without boots and snow pants must stay on the hot top.

“Sugar-Out Day” is

February 10, 2017

Dear  Parents,

February   is   “  National   Children’s  Dental  Health  Month,”   and  RSU  40  is  acknowledging  February  10,  2017  as  “Sugar-‐Out  Day”.

Your  child’s  school  lunch  program  will  not  be  serving  sugary  foods  on  “Sugar-‐Out  Day”.    We  are  asking  you  to  help  by  being  sure  your   child   brings   a   non-‐sugary   snack   and/or   lunch   to   school   on  “Sugar-‐Out   Day”.    Why   not   join   your   child   in   observing   “Sugar-‐Out  Day”  by  giving  up  sugary  foods  too?

Dental   disease   is   a   costly   health   problem   in   Maine.     Tooth  decay  is  preventable.    One  step  in  breaking  the  chain  of  decay  is  to  cut  down   on   the   amount   of   sugary   foods   and   drinks   your   family  consumes.    Sugar  mixes  with  the  germs  in  your  mouth  to  form  an  acid.    The  acid  eats  away  your  teeth.  If  “acid-‐attacks”  happen  too  often,  the  teeth  are  weakened  and  cavities  start.

There  are  many  foods  we  eat  daily  that  have  “hidden”  sugars.    These  sugars  include  honey,  molasses,  corn  syrup,  dextrose,  fructose,  and  sucrose.    It  may  be  hard  to  change  your  eating  habits  by  choosing  foods  and  drinks  without  sugar;  however,  you  can  read  food  labels  and  replace   sweet,   sticky,   starchy   snacks   such   as   candy,   raisins,   potato  chips   and   soda  with   fresh   and   canned   fruits   (without   heavy,   sugary  syrup),   vegetables,   popcorn,   cheese   and   yogurt.     Most   children   like  these   foods   and   they  make   great   low   sugar   snacks   to   take   to   school  too!

Thank  you  for  your  help  and  support  for  a  brighter,  healthier  smile  for  life!!

Sincerely,

RSU  40  School  Health  Services
