She is a registered Architect, and has been exten- sively involved in urban planning and architectural design in Sweden and Denmark since 1968. Since 1978 she has also worked in Tanzania on their award winning ‘Museum and House of Culture’ in Dar es Salaam. Inger showed interesting slides of this project in Tanzania, a country which is hot and humid. The old museum had been built by the Germans when they ruled Tanzania, then the British bombed it and later built another next to it. It is set in the city’s beautiful botanical gardens. Cultural activities took place here, and children would sit under the huge trees where cultural meetings also took place. The brief to Inger and her team for the extensions to the museum and the building of the House of Culture was that the main target group was the local children, so that they could use the library, and learn from the past culture of the country, to ensure its future. The idea was to make history come alive through art, dancing and technology. Because of the humid climate it was essential to have light, wind and shade. The buildings surround the big trees in the garden. It is truly ‘the green meeting place for the people of the city'. The old buildings were retained and renovated, and the new buildings added on so beautifully that one could not see the difference between the old and the new. The design and implementation of this cultural center is very user friendly, and forms a warm welcome for everyone. Open verandas and lots of vents for air to flow freely through passages give a feeling of freedom. This is especially important taking cognizance of the weather in Dar es Salaam. The single pitch roof creates extra space and more air flow as the roof is held up by columns, and is open on the sides. This also allows the water from the monsoon rains to drain away more effectively. Because of a NO BRIBE clause in the contract, this project took about 4 years longer than envisaged to complete! Inger now lives in Helsingborg, in her home designed on 'green architecture’, so she is able to sell electricity back to her municipality. She also owns an apartment in Port Elizabeth, and she comes to visit our fair city every year.

PARTNER BIRTHDAYS

ANNIVERSARIES

Inger Thede is a Rotarian from Helsingborg, a Club which matches our Club in age, and in being the third Rotary Club to be chartered in Sweden. She is a registered Architect, and has been exten-sively involved in urban planning and architectural design in Sweden and Denmark since 1968. Since 1978 she has also worked in Tanzania on their award winning ‘Museum and House of Culture’ in Dar es Salaam.

Inger showed interesting slides of this project in Tanzania, a country which is hot and humid. The old museum had been built by the Germans when

they ruled Tanzania, then the British bombed it and later built another next to it.

This also allows the water from the monsoon rains to drain away more effectively. Because of a NO BRIBE clause in the contract, this project took about 4 years longer than envisaged to complete!

Rotary / Mahindra Partnership

Thandi Ndzombane quoted the Dalai Lama: “Sometimes one creates a dynamic impression

by saying something, and sometimes one creates as significant an

impression by remaining silent.”

Thought for the Day

Rotary in South Africa created an amazing partnership with Mahindra SA whereby Mahindra will be donating solar lights to matriculants in disadvantaged schools.

Thandi Ndzombane, as our Projects Director, identified the Sizonke Secondary school in Uitenhage as being a worthy recipient of these lights.

The 90 matric students at that school will each receive a solar light, and a stationery pack from Mahindra.

We are working on a date for the handover to the school, which should take place between the 22nd and the 26th February. We will arrange a media presence too, so that Rotary will gain coverage.

Once we know the date we will let you all know, as it will be good to have Rotarians present.

POETS, which stands for ‘Presidents and Officers Elect Training Seminar’ will be taking place in Colesberg on the 11th - 13th March this year.

Every Rotarian is welcome!

It is very interesting to get to know the background workings of Rotary. If anyone wants to join Linsley

and me, please speak to us re details.

The RI Convention will be held in Seoul, Korea between the 28th May and 1st June 2016.

Who is going to represent our club in Seoul?

Foundation of the Rotary Clubs SA

Rotary has the potential to harness large amounts of Corporate Social Investment funds through the establish-

ment of a suitable body, to be known as the “Foundation of the Rotary Clubs of South Africa”.

This would allow tax benefits and BBBEE credits for donations by corporates and individuals in SA.

The money in this Foundation will be distributed to Rotary Clubs in South Africa according to the same stipulations in which District Grants are distributed.

This Foundation will be governed by the Trust Property Control Act 57 of 1988.

Any objections to the establishment of this Founda-tion must be brought before the 15th February.
