The ldquoNUTrdquo AwardIt matters little what the monetary penalty is or how much education is given there are some drivers who just will not take notice of the road rules Sometimes this is because they are not aware that road rules change from time to timeOne of our readers suggested that we should have a quick refresher of some of those rulesThe most dangerous thing about travelling in a motor vehicle is still the ldquoNUT BEHIND THE WHEELrdquo

Mumrsquos favourite RecipesMumrsquos Rissoles
- good at any time - even on bread as a sandwich
Ingredients 1 12lb prime minced steak 1 large diced onion 2 eggs Teaspoon beef powder 2 tablespoons tomato sauce Salt and pepper to taste 2 large cups fine broken dry bread
MethodThoroughly combine all ingredients in a large bowl Mould by hand into medium size balls or patties and fry in hot oil moistened frypanNote- The following one or more ldquoleftoversrdquo can be added to the mix-ture Bacon bits ham bits handful of peas boiled or fried rice grated carrot etc For curry flavoured add two level tablespoons of quality curry powder to mix
(Note the old measures as my dear old departed mum never worried about those new fangled measures It was all done by sight anyhow The extra leftovers were what made them taste soooooo good)
Making a left turn as indicated by a turn line(1) If a driver is turning left at an intersection and there is a turn line indicating how the turn is required to be made the driver must make the turn as indicated by the turn line unlessmdash(a) the driver is turning at B lights or traffic arrows in accordance with part 17 division 2 or (b) subsec-tion (2) applies to the driver(2) A driver may turn left at an inter-section other than as indicated by a turn line ifmdash(a) the driverrsquos vehicle together with any load or projection is 75m long or longer and (b) the vehicle displays a do not overtake turning vehicle sign and (c) it is not prac-ticable for the driver to turn left as indicated by the turn line and (d) the driver can safely turn left other than as indicated by the turn line
Registration Stickers no moreAs from October 1st vehicle registration stickers are no longer required to be placed on vehicles under 45 gross vehicle mass
By not requiring these stickers is expected to save the Queensland Gov-ernment about $35 million a year It will also save the vehicle owner about 20 minutes by not having to replace the old sticker with the current one
Registration stickers already issued and on vehicles that no longer are required to have those stickers can now be removed Because you do not require a registration sticker to be affixed to your vehicle any more does not mean that you do not have to pay your registration and insure the vehicle
Governments in all states have now introduced new technology Automat-ic Number Place Cameras to automatically check on registration particu-lars similar to the way that speed cameras checks speeds and from that check enforcement action will be taken against offending owners of the vehicle involved Local police as well as specialised traffic police have the equipment available to carry out those checks on the spot
For vehicle owners who relied on the sticker to remind them when a regis-tration is due it is possible to download a free app from the iTunes store or Google Play depending on the platform to be used
Current registration checks can be done directly by phone on 1320 80 or over the internet via the web site

In the past week there has been much discussion in the media about the wearing of the Burqa and Niqab in public in Australia by Moslem women
This was raised by the statements made by PUP Senator Jacqui Lambie who wants both items banned in Australia
Surely it is up to the person who is wearing those items of cloth-ing as to whether they should be allowed to wear them
Whilst it is generally thought that it is a matter of the personrsquos religion that requires them to war those items that is not entirely correct but is only their inter-pretation of that religion The religion says that the Moslem women should dress modestly and their bodies are for the eyes of their lawful husbands only
It would appear that the wearing of those items of clothing may have come from desert tribes needing to cover themselves from dust storms and the like
Whilst Moslem women should be able to decide their clothing styles just as every other Austra-lian they do have to be mindful of the need for security and legal identification of themselves as they go about their lives in Aus-tralia and they should have to show their faces for the purpose of identity
Already there have bee cases in Australia where Moslem women have tried to get out of being convicted for offences because of lack of direct identification

New and novel method to curb speedingIn an effort to curb speeding and drivers falling asleep whilst driving the local authority of Tigress is creating the road between Albuquerque and the mountain community of Tijeras where the driver will hear a tune as long as the speed limit is obeyed By varying the frequency spacing and depth of the groves different pitched sounds can be created
This road is a section of the famous Route 66 which stretches across the USA and it uses a series of rumble strips to create music This is not the first time that ldquosinging roadsrdquo have been tried as a road safety feature Korea has tried this but the first trial was conducted in Denmark in 1995 A road in Lancaster California plays the William Tell Overture and has been used in creating television commercials for the Honda Civic car in 2008
The goal of the experiment is to change driver behaviour in a fun way by giving them a reward for obeying the speed limit
President of the Blackall Range Horseless Carriage Club is Des Donnan and he is busy ensuring that the new meeting rooms and HQ recently build within the grounds of the Maleny Historical Village area in McCarthyrsquos Road Maleny
Des has also been rebuilding his pride and joy a 1928 Alvis Silver Eagle Sports Tourer This car was the supercar of the day and technically innovative
The vehilce was oriiginally built by the Alvis Car and Engineering Company Ltd which was a British manufacturing company from Holyhead Road Coventry England and built vehicles between 1919 and 1967
In addition to automobiles designed for the civilian market the company also produced racing cars aircraft engines armoured cars and other armoured fighting vehicles
In 1928 Alvis became the first British manufacturer to put a front wheel drive car into production with independent suspension all round

A front wheel drive won the 1frac12 litre class in the 24 hours race at Le Mans
Des said that he bought the car from another Blackall Range club member and over the past six years has done a ground up restoration
The car had been in an accident at some stage and the chassis was bent together with the front axle The engine needed new con rods and Pistons Des said ldquoI sourced a new body frame to the original style from England and had a local Caloundra body shop make a new skin and mudguards as well as painting it an original colour I only need to have it trimmed now however it is drivable and registeredrdquo
This car will be one of many on display at the Maleny Historical Society Open Day on
Sunday October 5th at their village at McCarthyrsquos Road Maleny

Des does not have a lot of information about the history of his particular Alvis Silver Eagle other than it was a sedan when it came to Australia in 1929
ldquoI have had the car since 2008 and spent 3 years restoring it This model was a prewar Alvis and I have not owned one of this particular model before so it was a challenge to restore it It gives me tremendous pleasure when I finally finish a project and this project was specialrdquo
Finally building a home for the Blackall Range Horseless Carriage Club at the Maleny Historical Village has also given club members of the club great pride and pleasure
A lover of Alvis CarsDes said ldquoPreviously I had owned many prewar Alvis cars including 1250 cars of the 1920s as well as a Front Wheel Drive car of 1928rdquo
This was the first production front wheel drive car made in England and has great historical interest
Des also owns a 1935 Speed 20 Alvis (similar to the phgoto below) that his father brought out to Australia in 1955 when he migrated here
Des said that the enjoyment of owning these types of cars not only is in restoring and maintaining then but also driv ing them on the various club runs and touring events

All About Blackall Range Horseless Carriage Club

October is Mental Health WeekAcross Australia Mental Health affects as many as 1 in 3 Australians Even though so many people are affected there is very little discus-sion about it takes place either within the family or within the community
The week between October 5th and 12th has been set aside to discuss a subject that is normally tabooed - Metal health October 10th is of-ficially designated as World mental Health Day
One would be surprised at the list of names on the list of those who suffer from a mental illness
Between 1230pm and 2pm on Thursday October 9th there will a local community launch which will include a light lunch at the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre 1 Bicente-nary Lane Maleny
Following the lunch there will be a facilitated discussion involving those attending and health consul-tants from Care Connect Hinterland Support and other Mental Health Support Units
Mental Health Week is designed to help those with metal health issues to be able to come out and talk about their situations without fear of stigma attached which simply compounds the problems already being experienced by that person
Mental Health Week first was intro-duced in 1984 by the Mental Health
Foundation of Australia Victoria Division
The aims of that organisation were to ensure the provision of the best possible treatment in a humane and dignified manner whilst pro-tecting the individual patients rights
The aim of starting Mental Health Week was to reduce the gap in the acceptance of mental illnesses within the Australian community
In an effort to spread the word the ABC will broadcast a number of programs during the week of October 5th and 12th and has also launched a web site httpwwwabcnetaumentalas
To find out about the programs on this subject can be found on the web site

It would appear that the wearing of those items of clothing may have come from desert tribes needing to cover themselves from dust storms and the like
Whilst Moslem women should be able to decide their clothing styles just as every other Austra-lian they do have to be mindful of the need for security and legal identification of themselves as they go about their lives in Aus-tralia and they should have to show their faces for the purpose of identity

More Maleny District Groups receive fundingMore Maleny District Community Groups are about to receive their share in $124 million in State Government funding through the latest round of Gambling Community Benefit Fund grants
Member for Glass House Andrew Powell said many local organisations couldnrsquot do without the quarterly funding boost which allows them to continue their invaluable work in the area
ldquoHere in Glass House wersquore fortunate to have a range of non-profit organ-isations that provide services to families our elderly and our furry friends too Whether itrsquos our local cricket club our surf lifesavers or our animal care groups itrsquos important we continue to get behind those making a differencerdquo
Successful organisations within the Maleny district include the Maleny Golf Club Incorporated $3009091 to purchase a tractor the Stanley River Cricket Club Incorporated $1040500 to purchase equipment the Maleny Branch Little Athletics $1102000 to renovate the clubhouse facilities
Mr Powell said the quarterly grants allowed profits from gambling to be invested back into grass roots services and facilities that benefited people from all walks of life in the Glass House community
He continued ldquoI encourage all local groups however big or small to apply for the next round of funding before the end of November 2014 and make the most of this wonderful opportunityrdquo

The idea of forming a local Club on the Range for old car enthusiasts was bandied about by several locals in the mid 1980rsquos because they wearied of the trip to Brisbane to attend Meetings and Rallies with like minded people
The group headed by the late Jack and Alison Warren of Western Avenue Montville met and ldquotinkeredrdquo in their workshopshed behind their home Jack and Alison who owned an Austin 7HP tourer were well known identities of Montville and donated the flagstaff and gaslamps on the Village Green
The Club is now setting up a new club room complex at the Maleny Historical Village McCarthyrsquos Road Maleny
Members proudly participate in several local community events throughout the year Australia Day Celebrations Anzac Day street parade and static displays at local schools and historical days at Priscilla Cottage Maleny Historical Village
The club has a real family feel to events
