Dear Parishioners,
Again, thanks so much to all who participated in our
annual Thanksgiving Day Mass. Again thanks for your food donations to the
poor. Please see page 6 for a photo of the food donations placed before the
altar at the Thanksgiving Mass.
Today we begin the Advent season with the First Sunday of Advent. We
have now begun a new liturgical year in the life of the church. We will switch to
the Sunday readings Cycle B and Daily Mass readings Cycle II.
I would like to thank the Environment Group who did a fantastic job
decorating the church for Advent. Thank you for your time and hard work. The
church looks beautiful. Again special thanks to our donors from two years ago
who helped make our advent wreath a possibility at Holy Family. Thanks again
for your generosity!
This Friday is a holy day of obligation! It is the Feast of the Immaculate
Conception. Keep in mind there are only two or three obligatory holy days here
on the west coast. This is one of them. Please come join us and note that
Masses take place the night before, Thursday, December 7th at 5:30 PM and
then Friday, December 8th at 6:30 AM, 8 AM, 10 AM (schools), 12:15 PM, 5:30
PM and 7:00 PM in Spanish.
On Tuesday, December 12th is our annual celebration of Our Lady of
Guadalupe. We have a special Mass (in Spanish) at 6:30 AM with mariachi.
(Mananitas is at 6:00 AM sharp!) After Mass, light refreshments are provided at
our church patio. The celebration is organized by our Guadalupanas. All are
invited. Come honor our mother in heaven, patroness of the Americas. We also
have the annual “Triduo” of prayers preceding the Our Lady of Guadalupe
celebration on December 12th. These evenings are in Spanish and take place
Saturday, Sunday and Monday evenings Dec 9-11 at 7 PM. Please see page
11 of the bulletin for details.
If you would like to donate a wreath or poinsettia to honor a love one,
see page 3 of the bulletin for details. We have a number of different Christmas
charitable outreaches. Please see page 3 for information on the St. Vincent de
Paul Adopt a Family program, donations for our sister parish in Haiti, bell ringers
needed for the Salvation Army and the Holy Family Toy Drive. All of these are
very important and we appreciate your being a part of these opportunities to
help the less fortunate. Thank you in advance!!
Please keep in mind that the 4th Sunday of Advent is December 24th.
Thus, all morning Masses (plus the 5:30 PM vigil on December 23rd) are Advent
Masses. We begin the Christmas celebrations with the 4 pm family Mass on
December 24th.

Things To Consider for Advent
3 December 3, 2017
BELL RINGERS NEEDED FOR
SALVATION ARMY
Every year local churches volunteer to do bell
ringing and collect money for the poor in the
community. The job is easy. Just ring a little
bell, collect donations in the famous red kettle
and wish people a Merry Christmas. Holy
Family is volunteering for Saturday, December 16 and Monday, December
18 from 10am to 6pm at the Von’s on Glendale Avenue. All money collected
in Glendale stays in Glendale to help the needy with services and food.
Please consider to do an hour of service for the poor. This is what our
Catholic mission is! If you are interested, please contact Deacon Ron Baker
at 818-247-2222 x552 or [email protected]. Leave your name,
telephone number, e-mail address and the date and approximate time you
would like to serve. Thank you .
HOLY FAMILY TOY DRIVE
Collection dates are: December 2 and 3
December 9 and 10
The Justice and Peace Committee is
organizing our annual Toy Drive for
underprivileged children whose parents are
incarcerated. These children who have parents in jail are often neglected or
forgotten. Please consider bringing a new unwrapped toy next week when
you come to Mass. Please consider gifts for teenage boys as well as other
ages for boys or girls. There will be boxes at the church entrances to collect
your donations. Thank you for your consideration and generosity.
DONATE A
WREATH OR
POINSETTIA
TO HONOR A
LOVED ONE!
If you would like to donate one of the
large wreaths around the church
walls to honor a loved one, please go
to the office to make arrangements.
The wreaths around the Stations of
the Cross are $100 and the one on
the Choir Loft is $200. Your
dedication name will be placed on
the wreath.
If you would like
to donate one of
the poinsettias in
the sanctuary
during Christmas,
please use one of
the Christmas Flower envelopes.
Write the name of who you would like
to be remembered and include the
suggested donation of $10 or more.
The names will be in a beautiful gold
frame that will be placed near the
Infant Jesus in the Nativity scene
during Christmas.

each of the needy families. To find out how, please leave your name and

ADVENT CANDLES
Sunday, December 3rd marks the
beginning of Advent. Advent is a
period of hope, a time of our spiritual
preparation for Christmas. At
Christmas, we celebrate the birthday
of Jesus, our Lord and Prince of
Peace.
Like Lent, Advent is a time of more
prayers, fasting, and charity. Purple
is the liturgical color. Simbang Gabi
and Las Posadas are examples of
Advent traditions for Filipinos and
Mexicans respectively.
One of the best symbols of Advent is
the Advent Wreath which is made of
four (4) candles arranged in a circle
of evergreens. On each Sunday of
Advent, we light the candles at
Mass. The purple candles are lit
during the first, second, and fourth
Sundays. The rose candle is lit on
the third Sunday which marks the
pivotal period close to Christmas. In
unity with the church and promote a
meaningful celebration for families,
everyone is encouraged to have an
Advent Wreath in their homes. The
Advent Wreath should be part of your
home like the Christmas tree and
Nativity scene. Boxes of Advent
Candles are available in the parish
office and church patio after Masses.

Music Ministry
THE CONTINUATION OF SACRED MUSIC EXCELLENCE AT HOLY
It is my extreme pleasure to be the new music director at Holy Family Catholic Community! I will not talk about
my background as many of you have already read it but I will speak of the tradition of sacred music that I have
so readily received. Holy Family has not only been a model parish in the San Fernando Region over the last
few decades but it has also been a leader in sacred music. Many of you have, at some point, come into contact
with the man behind this, Dr. Christian Marcoe. I am no stranger to this man as I have been his student for the
last 6 years or so. It is through his instruction that many of his students have taken the calling of music director, parish musician, or
sacred music researcher. His influence cannot be overstated and it is with this background that I engage the task at hand, glorifying
our Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ, through beautiful and challenging music in the ministry of the faithful.
I am beyond excited to work with a team of Christ –centered musicians and staff. I, along with the parish staff, cantors, and
associate director of music, Tom Makiling, encourage you to be a participant in the parish community, specifically, the music
ministry. I am happy to set up a time to meet with new singers and instrumentalists to find a fit which best
uses their talents, as Father Jim described recently, at Holy Family. The Cherubim and Seraphim children’s choirs will be beginning
on December 3rd at 3:15pm-4:30pm for grades k-2 and December 6th at 3:15pm-4:30pm for grades 3, 4, and 5. These choirs will be
singing for the 9:30am mass on Sundays and will meet promptly at 9am to rehearse. Please inquire with the school for more
information or email me at [email protected].
Thank you for making me a member of Holy Family and for trusting me in leading the music ministry. I encourage you to introduce
yourself if you see me walking around. I would love to get to know who you are! We will keep each other in prayer as we move
forward together in the ministry of music and musical excellence.

Eucharistic Adoration
December 3, 2017
From Letters to a Brother Priest, by Rev. Fr. Vincent Martin Lucia and Rev. Msgr. Josefino Ramirez
I was reading the newspaper this morning about a man from Thailand who should win the Nobel
Peace Award for his humanitarian service. Each weekend he comes down from his mountain
village and goes into Bangkok. There he searches for young girls who were abducted, kidnapped
or tricked and brought to one of the many of hundreds of brothels in the city. These girls are between the
ages of twelve and fourteen and have as many as ten customers a night. This man travels a long distance,
gets no pay, and risks his life to save them. He has succeeded in bringing over 400 back to their parents
and family. Imagine the joy of a father or mother in seeing their little girl coming back safely to them after
such a terrible ordeal? Think of how grateful the parents must be to this man for saving their little girl.
That is nothing in comparison to how grateful God the Father would be to you for having perpetual adoration in your
parish, dear Thomas. This is why our Holy Father, Pope John Paul II, beatified Dina Belanger. She was a Canadian
woman devoted to prayer before the Blessed Sacrament. Before her holy hour Jesus would show her multitudes of
souls on the precipice of hell. She would see these same souls in the hands of God after her holy hour. Jesus gave
Blessed Dina a message to give to the church. The value of a holy hour is so great that it brings multitudes of souls
from the edge and brink of hell to the very gates of heaven. Think of it this way, Thomas. Because St. Martin was
black and illegitimate he was insulted and mistreated. He identified with Jesus, ignored and mistreated in the Blessed
Sacrament. As they consoled each other, Martin became more charitable, not hostile, better not bitter. He would
spend as many as eight hours each day in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament.
This so pleased Jesus that he made Martin a miracle worker. He would take a basket of fresh bread from the
monastery and go out into the streets to feed the poor. With a single basket of bread, he would feed an entire barrio.
Martin fed hundreds of starving people with a single basket of bread. You, dear Thomas, save hundreds of people
from hell with a single holy hour of prayer in the Presence of the Living Bread come down from Heaven.
This is why Charles de Foucauld spent his whole life before the Blessed Sacrament in a desert in Arabia. His one
prayer: “My God, bring all men to salvation.”

Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
