Select readings by authors from this year’s collection of short stories and poems. Produced by students, staff, and alumni, along with WordSpace writers and poets; this anthology has a mythic tale for everyone.

The Bewildered Family Guide to Yorkshire9–10pm

Ilkley blogger Jim Coulson and his kids regularly explore Yorkshire, uncovering the weird and wonderful stuff families can get up to. In this engaging multimedia celebration, Jim is both stand-up comedian and tour guide. Expect plenty of laughs and fantastic prizes!

FRIDAY 5 OCTOBER

Cruel Britannia? 9.15–10.15pm

Acapella choir Free Range bring you a witty and thought-provoking show exploring British history – the good bits and the bad. Many still sing ‘Rule Britannia’ with gusto. This collection of songs and scenes asks to what extent that’s still appropriate.

All FRINGE events are FREE and take place at Ilkley Playhouse, Weston Road, Ilkley LS29 8DW unless otherwise stated. No need to book in advance – just turn up. Fringe events include performance, spoken word, readings, poetry, music, storytelling and stand-up created by writers and performers connected to the Yorkshire region. Join Peter Hayes as he makes a swimsac from scratch, tests it out in the River Wharfe and talks about ‘The Frog Graham Round’ – an elite swimhiking challenge that covers four lakes and 18 months in the Lake District.

Join us for an exuberant evening of song, poetry and prose performance by folk performer David Kidman, who takes us through the four seasons, offering personal observations and emotional responses to the fluctuations of the year.

Come and listen to critically acclaimed novelist, Mark Connors, reading from his second novel, Tom Tit and the Maniacs. Mark will be joined by local writers Rosalind York, Terry Simpson and Sarah McMahon who are all following their own paths towards publication.

Join novelist and poet Clint Wastling on a trip through Yorkshire. Using poetry and photographs to piece together history, geology and culture, this unique blend of scientific discussion, creative performance and comedy is guaranteed to make you think.

Composed by the famed Wharfedale Poets, Music and Milestones is the groups’ fourth anthology. Tonight they perform a selection of personal milestones and poems about music, from Aretha Franklin to Shostakovich to the Sex Pistols.

See off insomnia in style as acclaimed Yorkshire poet Julia Deakin premieres her mesmeric new collection Sleepless, with scintillating blues guitar from Richard Townend. An outstanding 90-minute programme from two superb practitioners. Free entertainment doesn’t get better than this.

From moorlands to quarries and motherhood to loss, join award-winning poet Laura Potts as she reads work specially written for Ilkley. Accompanied by composer and cellist Keely Hodgson, North and Mourning, charts the peaks and valleys of life in the industrial north.

Poet Christine Bousfield collaborates with Nightdiver PoetryJazz, and her five grandchildren, to launch her latest volume, Granny Knot (Cinnamon). Expect poetry, quirky musical improvisations and flash mob dance in this vibrant and carnivalesque evening.
