Steers to £1270 Heifers to £1055

The first Friday of March brought a massive entry of over 600 cattle to Exeter Livestock Centre and although the older forward sorts were sold on a trade reflecting the lower finished price seen of late all younger (and especially outlying types) sold to a

particularly strong demand. A grand Aberdeen Angus steer (23m) from Chris Poad of Saltash topped the sale at a decent £1270 whilst other strong Angus bred bullocks (22m) reached £1220 for Paul Burden of Egloskerry. A tremendous run of well reared

and turned out steers from James & Naomi Law of Broadhempston was headed by a huge black Limousin steer (nicknamed Elvis) (24m) at £1255 whilst a pen of four smashing suckler bred red Limousins (22m) from Brian Vallance of Bickington fetched £1210

apiece. Robert & Janet Legg, Exeter sold smart Simmental steers (23m) at £1170 with the best Simmental (24m) from James & Naomi Law (24m) drawing £1175, the latter also sold British Blue steers of a similar age to £1165 and Charolais at £1140. An

eye-catching trio of South Devon steers (24m) from Alan Buckpitt of Modbury sold well at £1145 with cracking young Charolais steers (11m) from Bill & Donald Tonkin, Cheriton Fitzpaine looked good money £980 for a pair, also a couple of outstanding

Limousins (averaging 14m) from Christopher Wilton, East Ogwell sold for £900 each. No near finished heifers to grab the headlines but well bred and fed Limousins (21m) from EC Stanbury & Son of Inwardleigh drew £1055 followed by a bunch of

four super Aberdeen Angus females (23m) close at £1045 for Robert & Christine Harris of Bickleigh. Salers heifers (23m) from the Heard family of Hughslade, Okehampton ran to £1015 with neat Charolais (22m) off the same farm to £970. The better of

a tremendous run of outlying heifers from Edward & George Pollard, North Bovey saw £1000 apiece for four strong Blonde D’Aquitaines.

A good entry of stirks and suckled calves met a cracking trade throughout with lesser sorts in particular looking well sold. A

smart consignment from the Squire family of Okehampton saw the best of the Blonde cross steers (9m) attain £800 with others to £795 whilst Saler steers off the same holding hit £700 (9m), cracking Simmentals from RJ Beckley of Black Dog hit £740

(10m), Limousin steers from GM Bricknell of Christow achieved £720, Charolais steers from the Pook family of Brixham realised £685 with RA & CM Wonnacott of Chagford achieving the same figure again for Charolais cross steers. Blue steers meeting

strong demand and topping at £655 (9m) from James & Naomi Law of Broadhempston with others to £610 (9m), Limousin steers off the same good farm reached £655 (9m) the same figure achieved by Chris & Kate Stephens of Newton Abbot showing

similar sorts. Martin Daw of Ugborough hit £650 again for Limousin cross steers (8m), whilst further Blue steers from PC & C Cox of Meadwell topping at £650. Heifers topped at £700 from the Squire family presenting smart Blondes (9m), with others

realising £640, Limousin heifers from GM Bricknell realised £655, whilst Simmental heifers from RJ Beckley hit £645 (9m). Trade sharp for all types forward!

Please contact Ian Caunter 07813 068935 for any marketing advice.

A smaller entry of calves saw a super crowd of buyers around the ring looking to secure all grades of calves

resulting in a cracking trade! Top of the day was £360 for a Charolais bull from Stuart Winzer of Totnes.

Other Charolais bulls to £285 for Messrs RH & MJ Hurford of Axminster. British Blue bulls to £300 twice

for Messrs H Lawson & Partners of Ivybridge and Messrs CR & JM Carr of Cheriton Fitzpaine who sold

others to £295, £285 & £275. Others to £270 for Phillip & Caroline Cox of Lifton. Young Limousin bulls

sold well to £260 for Messrs GJ & CA Mock of Umberleigh. Native calves to £212 for an Aberdeen

Angus bull from Stuart Winzer who also topped the heifers at £285 for a Limousin heifer and sold Charolais heifers to £270, £235 & £215. Other Charolais heifers to £270 for Messrs RH & MJ Hurford.

Just a small offering of orphan lambs sold well and to £27 twice for Messrs Southwood of Dartmouth as a strong pair of lambs made £26 for Mike & Ken Hill of Bideford and five others sold at £20 for various vendors. Small young lambs from £6 to £12

and the average was £16.88.

A shorter number of store hoggs as numbers dry up both locally and nationally, were met by a similar trade reaching £87 & £86 for Suffolk cross Mules from David & Lynda Pellow of Sourton, £86.50 for Charollais ram hoggs from Iris Wotton of Stoodleigh

and £85.50 for forward sorts from Julie Williams of Ilsington. Other short keep hoggs to £84.50 for Dennis Tapp of Rackenford, £83 for both Anthony Barrow of Bickington and Keith Vincent of Truro and £82.50 for Pete Cole of Copplestone. Mediums

from £68 to £80 and a high percentage of smalls all generally £50 plus provided they’re of tidy breeding, pulled the average back a few pounds to £65 overall.

Grazers reached £86.50 for a strong trio of Texel crosses from Temuka Ltd of Meshaw and £69.50 for Dorset’s from Ken & Brenda Cole of Loxbeare with plenty of other genuine grazers over the £50 mark.

The March catalogued sale of breeding sheep saw pockets of trade with buyers willing to spend on the few pens they desired.

These included three pens of organic in-lamb 4T aged Mule ewes from a genuine flock dispersal on behalf of M Bury of Bratton Clovelly selling well at £131 whilst the rest of the flock of mainly Dorset and Dorset cross ewes and ewe hoggs sold between

£82 & £98. Messrs Stablechief Ltd travelled down from Yeovil to sell older Suffolk cross ewes scanned in lamb at £116 (x3) as well as Lleyns at £110 (x7), whilst J & W Grigg travelled up from Launceston to sell a double pen of Exlana shearlings at £110

(x2) and Robert Partridge of Teignmouth sold the best of his in-lamb Mule ewe hoggs scanned with twins at £108. Other indifferent sorts or unscanned sheep meeting a lower level of demand as expected but still trading in front of their modest cull

value. A fine run of empty ewe hoggs from Barry Elston of South Molton saw his Texel mules make £91 (x2) & £84 (x4) whilst Suffolk mules sold to £90 & £86.

Something for everyone within the 241 ewes with 313 lambs at foot that saw the best sell to a decent level of interest with

quality flock aged mainly Suffolk cross ewe doubles making £182, £178, £172 & £170 for Blackdown Game of Cotleigh. Away from this ongoing major reduction, second quality sorts dropped a long way back and were generally £120 to £140. Some quality

singles on offer saw Alex Stephens of Ermington continue with his ongoing reduction, selling smart flock aged Suffolk cross singles well as the last lot of the day at £149. More flock aged singles sold at £140 (x3) & £139 for Jack Foan of Cheriton Fitzpaine

and older FM ewe singles with nice lambs sold at £138 (x2) for Rob Davies of Totnes and £134 for similar again from Blackdown Game.

Kivells Messaging 2019 - Important News

Over the last 12 months we have been in discussions with our insurers and other advisors and listened to you, our sellers and buyers. The number of lots and attendees at our sales have grown over the last few years and we recognise that we need to adapt to meet and build on this increased demand for our services from both existing customers and new clients. At the same time we also recognise that our on farm dispersal sales and the Holsworthy Saturday collectives are not just sales but useful social events. The opportunity to meet and socialise mixing business and pleasure is essential in an age when farmers and many in the wider agricultural community work in isolation and then continue to be alone on the internet.

Getting the balance right between traditional and established ways of working and providing a safer environment is challenging particularly in market sites and farms. Kivells, Sellers and Buyers - we all have responsibilities and we at Kivells recognise that some improvements could be made. We have trialled some of these at Holsworthy and some have been well received and others less so. We ask that you bear with us as we put in place these changes many of which are primarily for your safety and to ensure you have the right information. Our staff will remind you and guide you and we ask that you respect the fact that they do so for your benefit and the benefit of other attendees.

We have introduced new signage at our market sites and the messaging will be replicated at our on farm and other sales. In addition all our sale catalogues, to include Livestock Market sales, will include additional information for all attendees under a Notice to Purchasers heading. The Notice to Purchasers will act as useful reminders for our regular Sellers and Buyers and answer many of the frequently asked questions raised by new attendees.

To ensure that all attendees to our Livestock Market sales are made aware of our new Health & Safety message we will also be creating digital messages for our canteen displays etc. We will also include this messaging in our market reports.

In addition with this initiative we will be improving the information content on Kivells.com particularly under the Agriculture Heading. You will be able to easily find much of the information you will need regarding trading with Kivells and all sales to include Terms and Conditions and Sellers and Buyers Responsibilities. The intention here is to enable you to have and absorb this information ahead of any sale and help you to register, buy and sell with knowledge. Kivells Livestock sales are conducted under the 2017 Livestock Auctioneers Association Terms and Conditions and these will also be posted in all of our market offices.

As regards Machinery Sales Kivells currently operate under our own Terms and Conditions. However the Livestock Auctioneers Association has recently published its own version and we are currently reviewing our strategy in this regard. We will update you when a decision is made.

Thank you for your business to date and we look forward to partnering you in the future.

BPS and Countryside Stewardship - The knowns and the unknowns of the New Scheme World The Kivells Professional team are always keeping up to date on what is happening with the Common Agricultural Policy going forward which can be quite a task! There are many items that we think we know, subject to a Brexit deal, however there are many other unknown aspects that will be forthcoming in future months and years. The Government has pledged to commit the same cash total in funds for farm support until the end of this parliament and funding is guaranteed for the full lifetime of any agreement signed by 31st December 2020 which is encouraging. The Current Scheme World – Basic Payment Scheme We are aware that the 2019 Basic Payment Scheme will continue in a similar format with the 2020 Basic Payment Scheme application likely to follow suit. Going forward from 2021, it is expected that the Basic Payment Scheme will reduce in value up until 2027 when it will be removed completely from 2028 onwards. Throughout that time period between 2021 and 2027, BPS will be delinked from eligible land and therefore not paid on a per hectare basis. We are unaware when this will be and what this will mean for farmers, but we will of course keep you updated as soon as we know more. The Current Scheme World – Agri Environment With regards to the current Countryside Stewardship Agreements, this year applications are available as in previous years but will be slightly simpler with regards to requesting an application pack online and not all supporting information will be required to be submitted with the application, but just made available for claims and inspection. This application window opened on 18th February with application packs needing to be requested by 31st May and full applications submitted by 31st July 2019. These agreements will have a start date of 1st January 2020 and can include capital items including water capital works if you are in the catchment sensitive farming area. The New Scheme World – Environmental Land Management Scheme (ELMS) From 2020 there is likely to be simpler Countryside Stewardship Agreements which may mean that the current wildlife offers that are currently available will be the only options going forward. This is a simple scheme with an online application and it is not competitive. However this scheme does not currently benefit from any capital works in addition. Going forward from 2020 the simplified Countryside Stewardship is likely to be available up until 2024 and during this time, pilots will be carried out for the new ELMS (Environmental Land Management Scheme). Then from 2025 onwards there will be a role out of the ELMS and from 2028 it will be available to all farmers and will replace the current Countryside Stewardship and Basic Payment Scheme payments, where landowners and farmers will get paid for the delivery of environmental services and benefits. It is likely to be an online application process with applications made throughout the year so no single, annual start date. This transition from BPS/CS to ELMS can be explained further in the table below.

There are still many unknowns with the Basic Payment Scheme, Countryside Stewardship and ELMS but it is looking to be very much environmental based going forward. We will of course keep you updated on anything further but if you do have any questions or if you would like any help with this year’s Basic Payment Scheme or Countryside Stewardship application, please do not hesitate to contact one of the Kivells Professional teams.
