Monday 5th August

Lambs to £100 & ppk

Cull Ewes to £102.50 & Rams to £99

A few more forward ahead of the Qurbani, anticipated to be this

coming Sunday/Monday met with a firmer trade all round especially for

the heavier, better fleshed lambs. Top of £100 was given for a pen of

smart 53kg Charollais sired lambs from C Squier of Newton St Cyres,

followed by four colossal 63kg lambs from Andrew Cleave of

Moretonhampstead at £99 and another single overweight made £98.50

for the Sage family of Sidmouth. 51kg Charollais crosses from Mark

Harvey of Slapton sold to £98 as 50kgs sold to £95 for Ellen Yandle of

Mamhead and £92.50 for Pauline Scanes of Cheriton Bishop. Some

smart 49kgs sold to £94.50 (193ppk) & £94.20 again for Mark Harvey and £91.50 for both Ellen Yandle and husband Tom.

48kgs to £90 for MG Curtis of Morchard Bishop, 47kgs to £91.20 (194ppk) again for Andrew Cleave and two smart pens

of 46kg lambs sold at £89.20 for Phillip Harris of Stockleigh Pomeroy (again 194ppk) and £89 (193ppk) for Derek Arnold

of Morchard Road. 45kgs to £89.50 (199ppk) again for Phillip Harris, £87 (193ppk) for two pens from Graham Parker of

Burrington, £86.20 for Ellen Yandle and £85 for Jerry Sanders-Carr of Exminster. Top per kilo of 200ppk went to smashing

Texel, Berrichon and Beltex crosses weighing in at 44kgs from Derek Arnold and achieving £88 whilst Dereks 43kg lambs

made £82.80. 42kg lambs sold to £79.20 for RJ Coney of Tiverton as lighter lambs at 49kg maxed out at £75.20 & £74.80

for SDF Molineux & partners of Silverton who also topped the 39kgs with lambs at £70.80. The SQQ was 6 pence better

at 174ppk whilst the demand for heavier lambs meant the overall average was 176ppk.

1018 cull sheep sold as expected to a lower level trade as outlets begin

to fill up ahead of the festival. A pair of pure Texel’s topped at £102.50

for Roger Geake of Lamerton, Angus & Sue Howie of Meeth sold Suffolk

x Charollais ewes at £101.50, FA & CJ Elsworthy of Witheridge sold a

Charollais at £100 and a further 14 pens of ewes sold in excess of £90 including M Pike of Puddington with Texels at

£98.50 and Suffolk crosses at £97.50 again for Angus & Sue Howie and £95.50 for WJ Perkins & Sons of Coryton. Mules

and Mashams just breaking the £70 barrier and Dorsets £60 to £88 depending on weight. An abundance of Hill bred ewes

and more than our fair share of lean and plain better bred sheep did little to help the average and sold from £20 to £59

with all keenly bid for despite buyer numbers being down on the week. Tups to £99 & £90 for Charollais from Richard

Helmer of West Alvington and £93 for both Tuckergreenhalf of Morchard Bishop and R & P Farming of Mamhead with a

large penful. Average of £56 is back £4 which considering the close proximity to Qurbani, the quality of sheep forward

and having two buyers missing is far from a disaster.

Prime & Cull sheep Mortality and Rejection Insurance

As of 1st April 2019 a levy of 15p (12p plus VAT) will be deducted from all prime and cull sheep sold at Exeter on a Monday to cover deaths and meat rejections associated with slaughter stock from this sale. There is an exception to this levy if a vendor is deemed to have an

epidemic of cysticercus-ovis or similar, but in this unlikely event the auctioneer will liaise with the vendor in question.

from Adrian Bowden of Drewsteignton closely followed by a young (18m) Aberdeen Angus bullock from Robert & William

Reddaway of South Tawton at 189ppk. 188ppk (£1297) was attained for a well bred and fed Bazadaise cross steer (23m)

a massive £1354 and £1300 for Alan Luscombe of Bickington whilst strong Simmental heifers (27m) from Robert & Janet

Legg of Exeter saw 185ppk and grossed a whopping £1243. Barren cows topped at a decent 135ppk for a smart British

Blue from Richard Hill of Dunsford with excellent South Devon cows rising 134ppk (£977) for Tom Cleave of

Broadhempston, 132ppk and £1028 for Turner & Young of Newton Abbot and 124ppk for the Tully partnership up from

Brixham. A well-covered Friesian cow from Gerald Beard of Bickington drew 129ppk and £896 with Cull bulls selling to

110ppk and £1022 for a solid looking Hereford from Mark Stephens of Plympton.

Time fly’s when you’re having fun as the midpoint of 2019 passes. Looking back at last year’s Rural Reflection and the following was stated ‘Hot weather continues to be the topic of conversation with many livestock farmers having to feed supplementary silage as the extreme temperatures have decimated grassland across the country’. Thankfully we are not at that stage yet, but what a tremendous few weeks of hot weather we have had. Travelling around undertaking various work it appears almost every corner of grass has been mown and baled to hay or silage if it hasn’t already been grazed. Just the requirement with farmers replenishing last years used stocks. With beef prices at a shocking state at least fodder prices should be back on last year’s dizzy heights with good yields and quality being achieved.

Continuing on crops, last month saw Kivells conduct their 30th Annual sale of standing straw. This year’s prices weren’t going to follow last year’s highs, that said prices pushed past vendor’s expectations with annual bulk and local buyers back supporting local vendors. Crops looked well throughout with harvest on the Winter Barley imminent, average prices were as follows: 275 acres of Winter Barley averaged £81 (back £34 on the year), 555 acres of Winter Wheat averaged £65.50 (back £32 on the year), whilst Winter Oats averaged £59.50 (back £40 on the year). Prices varied throughout the South West with reports elsewhere a lot less than mentioned above. Strong and loyal buying power with willing vendors enabled for sound prices to be achieved.

Moving onto livestock and beef prices are often the hot topic of conversation when out on farm, with quotes from some under the £3.20 deadweight. There are many reasons for this but it appears a mix of full freezers with continued Brexit uncertainty, abattoir waiting lists and cheap European Beef, farmers are faced with the fact of shocking prices. That said positivity is always important and as I write this month’s Rural Reflection an email has come through from the Farmers Guardian with the head line ‘ £230M boost for British Beef as China agrees to market access’ whereby Chinese folk could be consuming our beef by the end of the year. Another market should improve aspects, only time will tell. One thing is for sure the autumn could prove a difficult trade as the end finisher will need to purchase cattle at lower levels if beef remains at £3.20. Let’s all hope for a marked improvement!

The countdown to submit 2019 Countryside Stewardship Applications begins as all applications must be submitted by the 31st July (end of this month). The uptake this year would be up on previous years with many taking full advantage of capital items available in particular livestock fencing on permanent grassland. If you require any assistance in submitting the application or require advice on suitable land based options to suit your farming enterprises please contact your local office. Our agents have been completing these applications for the past 4 years and have good knowledge on the options that suit various farm structures.

Continuing on a similar vein, last week brought the announcement of the well anticipated Countryside Productivity Small Grant Scheme (CPSG). Through the initiative, farm businesses can apply for grants of between £3,000 and £12,000 to help them invest in new and innovative technology. The grants are 40% of the standard costs for each item. Last week’s announcement follows the first round of funding in 2018 when £15 million was awarded to successful applicants. For the second round of funding, 26 new items have been added to the list of equipment available. Farmers and rural businesses will have eight weeks to submit an application for this funding with the deadline of 3rd September. Grants are available for all farm types, including livestock, horticulture and arable businesses, with a total pot of £15 million available to fund investments in new technology.

There are 87 items on the list including:

Mobile Cattle Handling Systems Cattle Crush (Automatic) Specialist Foot Trimming Crush Badger Proof Feed Troughs Mobile Sheep Handling Systems Yield Monitoring Measuring nitrogen levels in crops using light reflectance

If you require any further information or are keen to apply and require assistance please get in touch with your local office.

Rural Reflection July 2019

Recently our professional team has been instructed to undertake a number of Farm Business Tenancy agreements with both landlord and tenants looking to secure long terms tenancies often in excess of 5 years and often without any provision’s for rent reviews or for the agreement to be brought to an end early. Now, although as a tenant you have guaranteed security for the 5 years and for the landlord a definite fixed income stream. With continued uncertainty over a Blue, Red, Orange, Green or even ‘Light Blue Arrow’ Government together with volatile produce prices, serious consideration needs to be made on implementing rent reviews and break clauses. This will provide a reasonable degree of flexibility for both landlords and tenants, given the potential future changes we will be seeing in the farming industry over the next few years. Show season is well underway, having already attended both the Devon County and Royal Cornwall both seeming to be a great success. Our attention now turns to a number of one day shows starting with our stand at the Mid Devon we look forward to seeing many of you there.
