A LEVEL PRESENTATION AFTERNOON Our 2018 leavers from Sixth Form came back to celebrate their successes and catch
up with staff at our annual presentation event.
It was great to see our students who achieved excellent exam results again, all of
whom were now on the next stage of their journey. It was wonderful to see how
successful those had been who stayed in education too, with some lovely stories of
their experiences at university and in apprenticeships.
We know at Rainhill Sixth Form Centre our students benefit from the personalised
approach helping them to achieve their best and progress into their areas of
interested, they get excellent exam results alongside our Outstanding Enrichment
programmes. It pays to stay at Rainhill.
The presentations were made by the Chair of Governors Sylvia Thomson who
congratulated them all on their achievements and paid tribute to their excellent
efforts alongside those of the school staff.

CAREERS EDUCATION, ADVICE AND GUIDANCE AT RAINHILL SIXTH FORM Here at Sixth Form, we pride ourselves on providing excellent careers education,
advice and guidance in line with the Gatsby Benchmark Framework for good careers
guidance. The Gatsby Benchmarks were introduced to schools in 2014 and by 2020,
all careers provision in schools need to be in line with them. You can read more about
the Gatsby Benchmarks here:
http://www.gatsby.org.uk/uploads/education/reports/pdf/gatsby-sir-john-holman-
good-career-guidance-2014.pdf
There are 8 Gatsby Benchmarks in total and each week in the parent newsletter, we
will be highlighting how we hit these in the Sixth Form and inform you of how you can
access more information on these areas to support your child.
This week, we will inform you about what we do to provide advice and guidance on
the second benchmark, which focuses on the Labour Market.
Gatsby Benchmark two outlines that "Every pupil, and their parents, should have
access to good quality information about future study options and labour market
opportunities. They will need the support of an informed adviser to make best use of
available information." (Gatsby, 2014).
Each year, students in Year 12 have an assembly on the Labour market and why it is
so important to bear in mind when thinking about future careers. The current Year 13
students had the Manchester Growth Company, along with representative from the
NHS and Knowsley Safari Park. The current Year 12 students welcomed Careers
Connect representative, Faye Rafferty, along with Barclay's bank.
For parents, we have a section on our website where you can find out more about the
Labour Market, it's importance and key employers in the area:
https://www.rainhillsixthform.org.uk/the-labour-market/
Further, all students are given access and training on how to use Unifrog, an
interactive careers platform that allows them to access careers information and
apprenticeships available in the local area. All Year 12 parents should have received
a log on to this platform too in September. If you have not received this and would like
one, please let Mrs Hughes (Sixth Form Receptionsit) know via email:
Miss Morrell, Key Stage 5 Learning Mentor.

We hope you find this information useful.
HAVE YOU AN INTEREST AND PASSION TO HELP THE SCHOOL BECOME
EVEN BETTER? Are you interested in becoming a Governor of the school?
This is a vouluntary position that requires four evening meetings per year, plus half a
day per year to visit school during the day. The role of the Governing Body is to work
with the senior leaders in setting the strategic direction of the school and being critical
friends of the school.
If you are interested, please send a resume or brief CV to Clerk to Governors, Alison
Mawdsley, she will forward this to Syliva Thomson, Chair of Governors.
UPDATING PARENT INFORMATION Can all parents please inform the school with your up to date email address. Edulink

YEAR 11 MOCK RESULTS DAY Dear Parents/Carers,
On Thursday 31st January 2019 your son/daughter will receive their LP2 Examination
results. This year we are giving them in the style of the August results day.
Students and parents are to collect LP2 results from staff in the Arts Theatre foyer from
3.50pm. Once opened, you should both proceed to the Sports Hall to the Parent’s
Information Evening for individual subject appointments where you will receive
detailed feedback on exams as well as revision techniques, strategies and resources.
As Year 11 are approaching their final GCSE Examinations, this is a crucial time in their
education. This Parent Information Evening offers a perfect opportunity for you to
raise any concerns you may have regarding your son/daughter’s education and will
also provide teachers with the opportunity to provide feedback on your
son/daughter’s work to date. Therefore, should there be any specific difficulties
which prevent you from attending on Thursday 31st January, please contact myself
and I will arrange a mutually convenient time for you to see relevant teachers.
In addition to your appointments, our dedicated Sixth Form team will be available to
provide information, advice and guidance about Y12 course requirements and
progression routes in subjects at Rainhill Sixth Form.
We very much look forward to seeing you there.
Yours faithfully
Miss N Fryer
Year 11 Progress Leader

SCIENCE ACADEMY NEWS Mario Kart was back in form on Thursday 20th December as Mr Cowley hosted a
gaming event in A206 for our Science Academy students.
The next one will be held on Thursday 17th January during lunchtime in A206, giving
the Sixth Formers the opportunity to dethrone the defending champ.
Mrs Jenner, Science Academy Co-ordinator.
IF YOUR CHILD IS ILL IN SCHOOL With the cold and flu season upon us, we would like to remind parents of the
procedures for illness.
If your child is absent from school due to illness, please contact the Attendance
Officer before 9am to report the absence leaving your child’s name, form, details for
absence and when they are likely to return.
If your child is unwell whilst in school, they should report to their Year Student Manager.
If a student has an elevated temperature and/is displaying signs of illness, parents will
be contacted by the school and asked to collect their child from school. We ask that
parents do not arrive at school to collect pupils unless this has been agreed with a
member of staff.
Students with minor ailments will be encouraged to stay in school where possible.
We do not normally contact parents if students are reporting headaches, tummy
aches etc. unless we have a cause of concern. On occasion, we may contact
parents if pupils request paracetamol to help them manage slight discomfort.
Mrs McGowan, Attendance Officer.

YEAR 13 LEARNING PROGRAMME Assessment Week 2 – Monday 14th January to Friday 18th January (inclusive) From Monday 14th January to Friday 19th January (inclusive), all students in Year 13 will
be undertaking assessments in the subjects they are currently studying. For both
A-level and BTEC subjects, these assessments will be based on past paper questions
and indeed complete papers, and will be taken under exam conditions to best
prepare your son/daughter for final examinations in May/June 2019.
Please see below the exam timetable so your son/daughter is aware of when their
examinations take place. All morning exams will start as soon as possible at 9:00am.
It is vital that your son/daughter is in school and registered at 8:50am with their tutor
to allow them to get to the Arts Theatre/Gym for a 9:00am start.
Afternoon examinations commence at 1:10pm. Your son/daughter should report to
the Arts Theatre/Gym immediately from lunch.
Please could you encourage and support your son/daughter to prepare thoroughly
for these exams as they will give them a good indication of the progress they have
made to date and what they need to do to improve in order that they can secure
fantastic exam results in the summer of 2019.
Mr Cunningham, Deputy Head Teacher - Director of Studies.
