French Highlights invites you to discover the contemporary French scene by way of twelve arts
groups, over the course of six days of performances, most of them U.S. premieres; artists’
salons; and networking events.
Organized by three French partners – ONDA (French Office for Contemporary Performing Arts
Circulation), the Réseau en Scène Languedoc-Roussillon, and Arcadi (Cultural Agency – Paris
Île-de-France) – French Highlights is a unique opportunity to meet the choreographers and
directors who are making headlines on the French arts scene today.
Particularly targeted toward the global programmers who attend the Association of Performing
Arts Presenters (APAP) Conference in New York every January and during a period of excep-
tionally plentiful news on the arts front, the event is built around a program conceived in con-
junction with New York collaborators, venues and festivals especially attentive to international
artists, which have opened their doors to eight performance pieces from France.
Likewise, our «Ice-Breakers» artists’ salons provide privileged exchanges, during which the
arts groups will present their vision and their work. Gathered in small groups, programmers
can move from one salon to another, meeting all of the participating groups and discovering
each group’s unique artistic universe.
Finally, French Highlights is also an opportunity to meet with French artists at the APAP Con-
ference, either through one-on-one meetings or in more informal ways...
This project was made possible by the invaluable support of the Cultural Services of the French
Embassy in New York, as well as the support of the French Institute Alliance Française (FIAF)
and our hosting partners. ONDA, Réseau en Scène Languedoc-Roussillon, Arcadi, and the Cul-
tural Services of the French Embassy share the belief that artistic exchange and transnational
collaboration is enriched, above all, when artists and programmers are able to meet and get to
know one another better. It is in that spirit that we have conceived this French event in New
York and that we work throughout the year to enhance networking opportunities between artists
and programmers.
We hope you will take the opportunity to meet these artists while they are in New York and to
attend these French performance pieces, and that we can create a mutual desire to deepen
your relationships.

profondir vos relations.

Gustavia is a piece that brings together two choreographers from very different backgrounds,
driven by their common reflections on questions about the future of art and, in particular,
representation. Gustavia is a woman’s name but also a fake stage name. Gustavia tries to talk
about major issues that are beyond her – timeless, classics subjects, like women, death, the
theater, representation, imagination and the artist. As burlesque isn’t a genre, it provides a
framework for practices, ways of thinking and doing. Through an indirect use of the tools of
burlesque, Gustavia tries to talk freely about her work – the deviations, concerns, disasters
and joys in the relationship between contemporary art and life.
Meet Anne Fontanesi (representing Mathilde Monnier) at the artists’ salons on January 11
(see p.36)

The title of David Wampach’s piece refers to Stravinsky’s Le Sacre du Printemps (The Rite
of Spring), first staged by Nijinsky in 1913, when it unleashed a resounding scandal before
becoming a cornerstone of modern dance. What interests Wampach in the piece is everything
that it evokes – «ritual, ceremony, the state of ecstasy, intoxication, drunkenness.» But make
no mistake, even when Wampach broaches these concepts, it is always in terms of technique
and interpretation. The piece focuses on repressed, bottled-up emotions. This dialectic be-
tween private and public is also displayed in spatial terms, in the tension between walls and
floor, periphery and center. In this succession of rituals, it is the gravity in the space and the
faces that is paramount here.
Meet David Wampach at the artists’ salons on January 14 (see p.38)

“Cédric Andrieux is an eponymous solo piece for dancer Cédric Andrieux. In this piece, he
looks back over his career – at his early apprenticeship as a contemporary dancer in Brest,
then at the Paris National Conservatory of Music and Dance, subsequently as a dancer with
the Merce Cunningham Dance Company in New York, and most recently at the Lyon Opera
Ballet.
“What is crucial to me is the attempt to analyze to what extent any one of my arts projects
or styles alienates or emancipates the performer historically, socially and as a worker. Each
performer is the vehicle of that alienation or emancipation. In return, I maintain that this is
what every audience member experiences, since the performer is the translator, the conduit
between the choreographer and the public.”

Corbeau marks the first time choreographer Myriam Gourfink has made the choice of relying
on the virtuosity of classical ballet. For this solo piece, she’s worked with dancer Gwenaëlle
vauthier of the Paris Opera Ballet. “The idea was to base the choreography on the per-
former’s ability to lift her legs, so as to focus on an area rarely employed by contemporary
dancers. The dance plays on the extremely slow movement of her four limbs through space,
sculpting that space through the subtle directions created by the projection of the dancer’s
body within spherical forms. That spherical architecture is linked to the musical spaces
that kasper T. Tœplitz (the composer) sculpts, and even partially draws its source from that
music. I’m captivated by his musical hurricanes and the spaces they offer the dance – a
peripheral space with blurred edges that are delimited by sound. Out of the immateriality
of a space created by sound vibrations, out of its elasticity, from the minute to the infinite,
I create sphere ‘bubbles’ into which the body is extended.” Myriam Gourfink
Meet Myriam Gourfink at the artists’ salons on January 14 (see p.34)
» Myriam Gourfink

Marine is a solo piece full of sensory exchanges, assembling breath work and physical and
emotional tensions and supports. In this piece of plastic and elastic purity, of staggeringly
slow millimeter-by-millimeter movement, Myriam Gourfink embodies the very metamorphosis
of form.
Breathtakingly beautiful, the impulse is disseminated, vibrating to a subsonic musical score,
moving from one limb to another, literally opening up space.
Myriam Gourfink emphasizes breath work and internal movements, while all energy and corpo-
real and spatial tensions seem to catalyze the body’s extremities, at times as in the practice of
yoga. She pushes the limits, constantly shifting between mobility and immobility. And ques-
tions the very identity of choreographic production as opposed to the permanence of “this is
dance, so it has to move”.
Meet Myriam Gourfink at the artists’ salons on January 14 (see p.34)

A duet choreographed and performed by Olivier Dubois. The nefarious pursuit of the artist,
the sacrifice of the muse... who nourishes the artist’s posterity and offers his body to the
lone wolf.
“Of the muse...
With my mouth, I will make a work of you.
Through my kiss, I will disguise my insatiable, morbid condition as desire.
To possess, to empty my abysmal darkness of its life force and then fill it.
To create the eternal by way of my murderous lips.”
Sacred sacrifice that nourishes the artist’s posterity, that offers his body to the lone wolf.
The first note, that bassoon... that stalking lament. The nefarious, cunning pursuit of the muse.
“Where are you?” “I’m here.” “Where are you?” “I’m in the woods.”
Under the flashes, the Hollywood cliché – glory or flagrant evidence of a murder.”

To produce this huge, uninterrupted breath, an electric bass teams up with a computer in a
live, real-time hybrid, allowing the resulting ‘monster’ to play the notes between the notes –
micro-tones – and to grow over time, through polyphony – an interplay of air and electricity.
Beyond sound, the breath expands in a single choreographic gesture, a slow diagonal move-
ment, a silent counterpoint to the multiple voices seen from below, a floor dance also seen
from below, its slow movements altering the resonance of the electric bass. But the dance,
keyed on that breathing, gives way, buckling; while the bass and its even more monstrous
digital double don’t give a thought to breathing; they are at one with their breath.
Meet Myriam Gourfink at the artists’ salons on January 14 (see p.34)

“Magali Milian and Romuald Luydlin, accompanied by guitarist Marc Sens, have seized the
requiem as a form to be deconstructed and a potential to be reactivated. Adopting the re-
quiem’s insistence and repetition, they have made of it a rite of passage in chiaroscuro – an
intermediate zone where certain hidden dimensions of the body can expand and where states
of intensity, suspension, immobility and rupture can simultaneously be explored. On the hori-

calm nor death nor sleep, but resistance to flow, an unshakeable presence and refusal.

Trained in dance by Alwin Nikolais, Alain Buffard subsequently made the pivotal acquain-
tance of American choreographers Yvonne Rainer and Anna Halprin. In 1998, he created
Good Boy, a solo piece as radical and direct as a manifesto. That piece became the point of
departure for Mauvais Genre, a piece for some twenty dancers, in 2003.
After a period of investigation into the nature of art, the body and gender, the choreographer
took off into proposals that could not ignore the fact that the major issue in dance is that the
body is both what’s at stake and the seat of the political.
His fourteenth work, Baron Samedi, premiered in 2012. This musical and choreographic
piece calls upon the work of kurt Weill to update the precariousness and fragility of identity
in a tumultuous dance of every reversal.

Antoine Defoort, Halory Georger and Julien Fournet are the triumvirate at the head of L’Amicale
de Production, a manufacturer of all sorts of transversal art objects, straddling the worlds of
theater, the visual arts and the performance arts, in which they rethink the production of hy-
brid forms. “A small cottage industry production house”, L’Amicale de Production is neither
a company nor a manufacturer, but a project cooperative.
In recent years, they have created very diverse projects, performances, publications and video
projects, as duets, solos, or in collaboration with other artists. After making rotten apples
(Métrage Variable, 2004), plants (&&&&& & &&&, 2008) and tennis balls (Cheval, 2008)
sing, Defoort and Georger created Germinal, a homemade fresco produced on a shœstring in
September 2012 at Focus Dance, organized by the Lyon Dance Biennial.
L’Amicale Production is based in Lille (France) and Brussels (Belgium).
Petite maison de production artisanale (« small home-made

After performing with Angelin Preljocaj, Jan Fabre, Dominique Boivin and Nasser Martin
Gousset, Olivier Dubois choreographed his first solo piece, Pour Tout l’Or du Monde, in 1999.
Revisiting Nijinsky’s L’Après-midi d’un Faune (The Afternoon of a Faun), his work Faune(s)
explores the question of interpretation and appropriation of a founding choreographic work. In
November 2009, he created Révolution, a piece for 14 dancers to Ravel’s Bolero. In 2010, he
choreographed Spectre for the Ballet of Monte-Carlo and the duet L’Homme de l’Atlantique,
to a Frank Sinatra tune, at the Biennale de la Danse in Lyon. Then came his solo Rouge in
2011 and Tragédie, a piece for nine men and nine women that was created for the 2012
Avignon Festival.

Cecilia Bengolea and François Chaignaud created vlovajob Pru in 2006. In 2008, after
the premiere of Pâquerette, the company quickly grew. Five more pieces were then choreo-
graphed: Sylphides, Castor et Pollux, Danses Libres, Duchesses, and (M)imosa, as well as
many performances.
Through these pieces, Bengolea and Chaignaud have developed the themes of their work – the
confrontation of dance with body modification mechanisms, engraving contemporary writing
into a polyphonic dance history, investigating the erotic power of the public body, investigat-
ing the identity and esthetic urgency in forms of urban dance. Each project has also been an
opportunity to forge artistic collaborations with diverse personalities.
These works have also allowed them to reach many audiences and forge partnerships in
France and abroad. The company has presented its work at the Avignon Festival, at the Paris
Autmn Festival, at The kitchen in New York, at Impulstanz in vienna, and at Tanz im August
in Berlin, among others.
d’automne à Paris, the kitchen à new York, impulstanz à vienne, tanz im august à Berlin…

A leading figure of choreographic research in France, Myriam Gourfink is regularly invited to
participate in numerous international festivals – Springdance in New York, kunstenfestivalde-
sarts in Brussels, La Bâtie in Geneva, to name a few.
Her choreography is constantly evolving because each piece is structured for a specific envi-
ronment. It’s about listening, observing and understanding what is at work within that particu-
lar environment. Awareness of breath, how it circulates and the distribution of body weight
are at the center of her work. It was choreographer Odile Duboc’s work that nourished that
relationship to gravity, which is perceived as the time it takes for weight to descend, then as
the time to listen to what rises from the ground through the body. That breath work causes
you to feel the body as a resonant volume. The body is porous and the challenge is then to
take that into consideration by dancing the atmospheric pressure, to letting yourself float on
the air. These very small spaces of perception, born of the encounter between each cell and
each molecule of air, give rise to a dance in which time expands… Some people will speak
of slowness.
Marine, Corbeau and Breathing Monster by Myriam Gourfink are presented during French
Highlights (see pp.17, 19, 23)

After studying dance in Italy, Claudia Triozzi moved to Paris in 1985. A dancer with Odile
Duboc, Georges Appaix, François verret and Alain Buffard, in 1996 her creativity took a
multidisciplinary turn.
Triozzi creates iconoclastic performances; dance never comes out unscathed because she is
constantly questioning the assumptions of choreography, pushing the limits of the body. Since
The Family Tree (2002), she has been exploring voice work through experiments in writing
lyrics and songs. She plays with noisy, lyrical vocabulary sounds, taken from film, theater and
radio. In 2011, she began Pour une Thèse Vivante, a project on artists’ writings.
Her stage work is expanded in videos and installations. She has presented her work in Eu-
rope, the United States, korea and Japan. In 2011, she received two fellowships from Centre
National de la Danse (France) and Akademie Schloss Solitude in Stuttgart (Germany). She is
currently an associate artist at CNDC (Centre National de Danse Contemporaine) in Angers,
from 2011 to 2013.

ture with Christine Angot, music with Heiner Gœbbels and Louis Sclavis, French song with
Philippe katerine, performance art with La Ribot, cinema with Claire Denis, and more recently
painting with Dominique Figarella. Her confrontation with non-choreographic material is often

In 2004, Ruth Rosenthal and xavier klaine met in Jaffa and decided to combine their tal-
ents to form Winter Family, a Franco-Israeli experimental music duo. She sings in Hebrew
or English, in a dark, haunting voice; he develops layers of folk drones on piano, harmonium
and large organs. From Jerusalem to Paris to New York, clubs, theaters, crypts and the most
diverse of churches have welcomed their mystical universe, filled with political sadness and
uncompromising dark romanticism.
Jerusalem Plomb Durci was their first documentary theater performance. In 2009 and 2010,
the duo recorded sounds and filmed and collected images of memorial celebrations in schools,
neighborhoods and the media in Jerusalem... Pain, memory and courage are celebrated ev-
erywhere; codes and symbols are stretched to exhaustion. Those taken hostage become ac-
tors in a dazzling, macabre collective hallucination and throw themselves into a violent, sad,
political vortex.
