TIFF HighlightsFrench cinema in perpetual motionAfter a particularly strong year for French films at the Festival de Cannes, Toronto will once again open its doors to the eclec-tic creativity of French filmmakers, with a rich slate inclu-ding 31 features, seven short films and one restored classic title from Jacques Rozier. We are grateful to the TIFF for show-casing for the first time the originality of French TV series in its new PRIMETIME section, with the eagerly awaited second season of “The Returned”, clear evidence of the increasing cross-fertilization between TV and cinema today.

Wave after waveThis TIFF program stands out as proof that contemporary French cinema is in perpetual motion, mixing generations and styles, heralding the talent of upcoming directors and actors, as well as showcasing the work of globally acclai-med artists. Alongside Claude Lelouch, Jean-Paul Rappeneau, Philippe Garrel and Jacques Audiard, you’ll be able to discover

daring and pioneering young female directors in prestigious sections of the festival: Julie Delpy, Lucile Hadzihalilovic and Alice Winocour, leading lights of a new generation of film-makers in France.

No genre and no borderThe 2015 line-up also highlights the unique capacity of French cinema to reinvent itself, innovating and playing with the rules of genre, navigating between historical drama, comedy, the explicit and the experimental, being at once typically French and yet remote and unfamiliar.Industrywise, France continues to act as a paradise for inter-national coproductions and an artistic haven for foreign di-rectors. We are proud of the dynamic Gallic producers who are behind the recent works of masters such as Alexander Sokurov, Amos Gitaï and Patricio Guzman, as well as new gems from the Palestinian territories (Dégradé), Ethiopia (Lamb), Romania (The Treasure) and Turkey (Mustang).

Last but not least, France offers great diversity in terms of topics, with no hesitation in tackling the burning issues of contemporary societies such as homosexuality, exile and im-migration, racism and terrorism – proof that cinema has not lost its capacity to think differently and is, more than ever, a window on the world for the benefit and pleasure of interna-tional audiences.

French cinema in brief:- The second world exporter

- 15 Oscar winners and 3 palme d’Or in the past 10 years

- 120 million tickets sold outside France in 2014

- 680 million euros in international box-office receipts in 2014

- 550 French films released each year worldwide

UNIFRANCE FILMS in brief:- 1000 film industry members

- 10 French film festivals organized worldwide

- 80 international film festivals supported worldwide

- First French online film festival: myfrenchfilmfestival.com

- 4 overseas representatives: Beijing, Mumbai, New York, Tokyo

"As always we find ourselves stimulated by the unique sensibility that the French bring to their films. Grounded in reality they are not afraid of tackling difficult subjects and do so with a distinct storytelling style. There are some gutsy and controversial films in the selection this year, films that will challenge their audiences." Piers Handling (TIFF CEO and director)

"It's a testament to the vitality and range of French cinema that we have found strong films to present in our Gala programme, our new juried Platform section, and throughout the Festival. We were also inspired by the quality and number of films this year directed by French women. As so much of the global film industry debates the slow progress of gender equality within its ranks, France has taken the lead by simply delivering strong films by women." Cameron Bailey (TIFF artistic director)

{UniFrance films is a non-profit organization based in Paris with representatives in Beijing, Mumbai, New York and Tokyo, aiming at promoting French cinema worldwide. Exhibition produced and displayed by Institut français in Paris in cooperation with Roman de Kermadec, son of the artist, and curated by the photographer and reporter Aline Arlettaz.

"Actrices" by Kate Barry

After its inaugural presentation at the Rome Film Festival and later in Florence, Italy; Taipei and Kaohsiung in Taiwan; and recently in mainland China and Croatia, the exhibition “Actresses” will be presented at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) this year.

The exhibition comprises of 25 portraits of French actresses, from the most famous to the up-and-coming. These photographs with their indefinable, silent, and melancholic tones are also a tribute to the photographer, Kate Barry, who prematurely passed away in December 2013.

Kate Barry, daughter of actress and singer Jane Birkin and composer John Barry, started her photography career in 1996 at the age of 28. She has exhibited her work around the world, including Italy in 2006, Tokyo at the Mori Art Museum in 2010, and recently in China and Croatia.

Shoot the Book is an initiative led by SCELF (Société civile des Éditeurs de Langue française) and BIEF (Bureau international de l’Édition française). It is being organized by the Embassy of France to Canada, SCELF, and BIEF, with the support of Institut Français.

The project was first launched at Cannes Film Festival in 2014. This year, the Embassy of France to Canada took the initiative to create the first edition of Shoot the Book in Toronto in partnership with TIFF. This event is a unique opportunity for French publishers to

present books with significant potential for film adaptation to an audience of producers from around the world, especially North America.

The four selected French publishing houses will have the pleasure to present their books during a pitching session which will take place at the TIFF Bell Lightbox on Monday, September 14th, 2015, at 1:00pm. It will be followed by a cocktail reception and a networking session.
