HAPPY FATHER’S DAY

Ready for a li le poetry? Probably, you will be able to guess the age of the poet. “A dad is a person who is loving and kind, And o en he knows what you have on your mind. He’s someone who listens, suggests and defends. A dad can be one of your very best friends.” Children who can write poems like this are saying that they feel that they really ma er and are important in the lives of their fathers. A father can do a lot for a child, but it is the emo onal bond that the child feels, that their dad is really there for them and that their welfare and progress spiritually, socially, intellectually and emo onally really ma er to their dad. As men have become more concerned about balancing work and family, they have recognised the enormous benefits, rewards and sa sfac on from being a good parent. They see that the emo onal investment they make in their children comes back to them in terms of making them more open and more sa sfied as an adult human being.

However, being a dad entails knowing when to shi gear and move into a role that is appropriate to the development of their child/ren. Mark Twain’s wi y observa on has some advice to offer: “When I was a boy of 14, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have him around. When I got to 21, I was astonished at how much he had learned in seven years.”

One thing that we dads have to do is to make a conscious change in the way we guide our children when they reach adolescence. When our child becomes a young teenager, we sense that a shi in emphasis is required towards being an adviser, confidant and guidance counsellor. Instead of just making and imposing rules, we can listen and allow our child to take some of the responsibility for making decisions as they gradually move towards a more adult role, while we provide the emo onal security, nurturing and warmth that our child needs. If we fail to make the shi , we run the risk of giving our child the Mark Twain experience – a dad “gone missing” for seven years.

Oxford University’s “Tomorrow’s Men Project”, surveyed more than 1500 boys between the ages of 13 and 19 and proved the importance of the role of a father. More than 90% of boys who felt that their fathers spent me with them and took an interest in their progress emerged in the “can‐do” category. By contrast 72% of those who felt that their fathers rarely or never did these things fell into the group with the lowest self‐esteem and confidence and exhibited behavioural problems.

Not all men, of course, are fathers. Nevertheless, Father’s Day can provide an opportunity for celebra ng the contribu on that men make to children as ‘significant people’ in their lives. All men are called at various mes during their lives and in various ways, to offer their love and leadership, and support to dependent members of the community. Like God, whom we call Father, they are a source of a community’s life and strength.

There is much truth in the observa on that “A man’s garden and his children both reflect the amount of nurturing done during the growing season” (Author unknown). So, how about some more of that poem: “Thank you, dad, for listening and caring for giving and sharing but, especially, for just being you. Happy Father’s Day!”

STAFFING MATTERS

Lianne Airey (English Learning Area) commenced a period of leave today in prepara on for the birth of her first child. We extend to Lianne and Aaron our best wishes and prayers for the safe arrival of this precious addi on to their family.

CONDOLENCES

It is with a sense of sadness that I inform our community of two recent deaths.

Last weekend Milton Whyte, Grandpa of Brooke Whyte (Year 4 Teacher), passed away in his sleep aged 94. On Tuesday we also learnt of the death of Hazel Williams, mother‐in‐law to Mandy Williams (Principal’s Execu ve Assistant), following a short illness.

As a community we extend our condolences and prayerful support to Brooke and her family and to Mandy, Jon and their family during this sad and difficult me.

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

The College Advisory Board met on Tuesday 25 August. The agenda included discussion around what a Stage 13 Capital Development Plan could poten ally look like. Several ideas were discussed, with a decision going forward to work together within the College Board instead of crea ng a Sub‐Commi ee. A tour of the Duncan Street campus has been organised for current Board members to be er understand the layout and the needs of the campus.

The College Board (guided by Mr Geoff Mills) spent some me discussing Catholic Educa on Western Australia Limited (CEWA Ltd). CEWA Ltd commenced opera ng on 1 January 2020, when all Diocesan schools and Catholic Educa on Commission of Western Australia (CECWA) assets, liabili es and employees were transferred to CEWA Ltd through a Deed of Transfer and Assignment signed by the Bishops. Chaplain’s Reflection FATHER’S DAY

This coming Sunday is Father's Day. Let us give thanks to God for the gi of our fathers and let us be graceful to them for all the things they do for us. Let’s also pray for all fathers that God will give them wisdom and strength to guide their children in love towards our heavenly Father.

Christ called God 'Father', especially in the most important or challenging moments of his life. He teaches us to do the same because we have been given a spirit of adop on that allows us to consider ourselves his children. Then too we can call God 'Father' and pray the 'Our Father' prayer that is the cornerstone of our prayer life. Pope Francis stresses how important it is to feel like that to pray: “It’s through this Father that we receive our iden ty as children. And when I say ‘Father’ this goes right to the roots of my iden ty: my Chris an iden ty is to be his child and this is a grace of the Holy Spirit".

Fathers have a great responsibility to love and to correct their children. It is not easy, but God comes to help them showing them how a father loves, forgives and corrects always with mercy. Many fathers came to our liturgy and breakfast this morning and all received our thanks and respect for what they do. We reflected on their hard work and prayed that God will give them the grace to love their children as God does with us.

God our Father, bless all the fathers in the world. Guide them to be good role models and loving to all their children. Help them to be a father like you are. YEAR 3 SPECIAL VISITOR The Year 3 classes recently had a visit from ex‐student Sophie Stewart, Class of 2011, to talk about her life at school and since leaving. Below are two reports and some drawings by students:

Would you have enough courage to start a swim class for refugees all on your own? Well Sophie Stewart did! Sophie Stewart was born in Subiaco in July 1994. Her dad owned a homeless shelter that she went to a lot and at a young age she realized how hard other peoples lives are. Sophie was the youngest out of four siblings. She has a sister and two brothers. Sophie went to Ursula Frayne Catholic College from Pre‐Primary to Year 12. Since Sophie saw how hard other people’s lives are she believed in social jus ce. Sophie was awarded the Principal’s Award in Year 12 and Frayne Medal in Year 6. She also became the Australian representa ve for the World Youth Council in Year 12. Sophie started a ‘Swim for Refugees’ program that became very successful. Sophie changed the law so people don’t go to jail for unpaid fines and so they can pay in other ways. Sophie is compassionate and passionate and has a lot of empathy. Sophie’s hobbies are reading, cooking, spending me with family and she is learning how to surf. Sophie really likes the colour turquoise. She is also quite flexible. Sophie is a very caring lady. She loves her family and community. She is kind‐hearted and resilient. Angelina Valeureux Would you have the courage, determina on and bravery to change the law? Sophie is passionate about social jus ce, helping people and making a difference. She was born in Subiaco in 1994 and is 26 years old. Sophie grew up in Victoria Park and went to Ursula Frayne Catholic College. She played the flute, was in the Band and Choir, played netball, was on the SRC and the Red Fac on Captain. Every summer holidays she would go camping in Dunsborough and eat barramundi. She also had a treehouse in her backyard, but it fell down two years ago! Sophie started the ‘Swim for Refugees’ volunteer program. She believes in social jus ce. Sophie also changed the law. The law that she changed was if you get a fine and you are too poor to pay for it, you can go out into the community and earn some money to pay for the fine. Before Sophie changed the law, people too poor to pay a fine had to go to jail. Sophie thought it wasn’t fair. She won a Principal’s Award and Frayne Medal. In Year 12 she was Australian repre‐senta ve for the Youth World Council. Sophie also got to go to India. When she was a li le girl her dad worked in a homeless shelter and a er school she would visit the shelter and help her dad. Her dad inspired Sophie to help others. Sophie is compassionate, passionate and kind. Her favourite colour is turquoise. Her favourite hobbies are spending me with her family, cooking, yoga, reading and learning to surf. Sophie is very flexible too. She can put her arms around her whole body! One of the challenges she had to face was the loss of her dad. She was filled with sadness. Sophie has a kind heart. She likes to help people in need. Sophie is full of empathy, compassion and passion. She is a role model for children. Sophie can make our world a be er place. Isabelle Bong

AUSSIES OF THE MONTH

Joseph Sims Well done to Joey Sims (2W) for being Aussie of the Month for the month for September. Joey has been modelling good behaviour in his classroom. He listens carefully to instruc ons, contributes to class discussions and is quick to start ac vi es. Joey has a kind and gentle heart. His love for his friends and family shines through every day. Joey is a quiet achiever who listens carefully to feedback about his work and values support from his teachers. He remembers to use his manners when talking to his friends and adults around the school. Joey takes the me to take care of the environment and makes sure our school, and in par cular, his classroom, is neat and dy. Joey is a valued member of the Frayne community and is a deserving recipient of this special award. Congratula ons Joey!

Kha Nguyen (Ciara) Le The Aussie of the Month for the month of September is Ciara Le (PPR). Ciara is an extremely helpful and co‐opera ve student who shows a true representa on of the Ursula Frayne Core Values. She is a dedi‐cated worker and puts great effort into all key learning areas. Ciara always comes to school with a posi ve outlook, shows ini a ve and seeks new challenges. She has an extremely kind nature and an even kinder heart, is empathe c towards others and is a compassionate friend. Ciara will always offer a helping hand to those in need. Even though Wellbeing is part of every day at Frayne, next week we would like the College to especially concentrate on Wellbeing. To help with this, the Liturgy Group on Balmoral and the Student Wellbeing Team on the Duncan Street Campus have come up with a plan. On Balmoral we will be looking at: Mindful Monday, Tu ‐Frui Tuesday, Workout and Welcoming Wednesday, Thankful Thursday and Feel Good Friday with 'Cosy Clothes Day' where students can wear what they are most comfortable in. On Friday we would also like to give students the opportunity to bring in a gold coin dona on for MercyWorks so we can also care for the Wellbeing of others. On Duncan Street we have also have a variety of ac vi es aimed at focusing on the health and wellbeing of students and staff at the College, including a Gra tude Wall, Uno compe on, Quizzes and a ‘Frayne Chain’. Due to COVID‐19 restric ons all lunches must be pre‐ordered this year and will be packaged individually. Please note that there won’t be any available for purchase on the day.
