The Fraternal Order of Eagles, an international nonprofit organization, unites fraternally in the spirit of liberty, truth, justice and equality, to make human life more desirable by lessening its ills, and by promoting peace, prosperity, gladness and hope.
From our Worthy President – Doc Burnham
“If time is infinite, why do we seem to never have
enough of it?” Man, February has disappeared before
I knew it! I heard many good reports about the Sock
Hop at the Aerie. I was unable to attend because of a
previous commitment but I regret not being there for
the festivities, especially the pie eating contest.
The Children’s Art Contest had our largest
participation yet, over 130 drawings were submitted. I
want to thank Vickie DeBoard for her help in
promoting the event to the schools. Her personal
contacts, along with a very aggressive personal e-mail
campaign to the individual teachers, paid off.
I especially want to extend a note of gratitude to
Madam President Julie Stanley, Past WP L.W.
Bruce, Worthy Vice President Kirby Schuler,
Worthy Chaplain Richard Anderson and Debbie
Biglow (Vickie’s sister) for judging the entries. The
Ladies Auxiliary did an awesome job in setting up and
providing for the Saturday morning award
ceremony. I predict we will have something else to
celebrate on March 15 when the Grand Aerie
announces the International winners.
March is the time for the Leprechaun races, for the
Past President’s Club to award Scholarships to
graduating seniors and April 1 is the God, Flag &
Country (GF&C) Oratory Competition. The GF&C
contest is perhaps my favorite thing in the Eagles. We
will welcome your participation.
There is a dynamic synergy that I sense taking place
around the Aerie. This is the palpable, yet intangible,
elements that keep things moving in a positive, ever
refreshing direction. The life of an Aerie is like all
other living things; a static environment cannot exist
and project a healthy dynamic for any long sustained
period of time. When you are green you grow and
when you are ripe, you rot.
The proposed upcoming Rifle Raffle is an example of
Eagle pride around the Aerie. The Henry Rifle was
introduced in the early 1860’s, too late for widespread
use during the War of Northern Aggression, but
widely used during the Plains Indian Wars of the
1870’s and 1880’s. The Henry Rifle was used at the
Battle of the Little Big Horn. It was the basis for the
iconic Winchester lever action, the Rifle-That-Won-
the-West. You can buy less expensive rifles, but as a
commemorative gun, designed and built for the
Fraternal Order of Eagles, it is a collector’s item for
Eagles. Unlike our gun raffles in previous years,
designed to sell as many tickets as possible to
maximize profit, only 150 tickets will be sold this
time. Get yours early.
A desire to have Eagle shirts, rifles and paraphernalia
all speak to the Eagle pride, a part of that dynamic
energy that keeps our Aerie unique among the 1500 or
so Eagle Aeries across the US and Canada. What is
our greatest asset? Our good food, cheap drinks and
friendly Social Room, our officers, our Bingo, our
charity work...it is kind of all of that and more, but our
greatest asset is you, our individual
members. Without you, and without what you do for
our Aerie, we would not be who we are. Thank you
for what you do, and if the Eagles is not quite
fulfilling your expectations, the remedy is to find
where you can make a positive difference and get
involved. We are here to help each other.
See you ‘round the Aerie,
The Eagles’ Cry March, 2017 – Page 2
From our Madam President – Julie Stanley
Hey everyone!! It's about that time of year
again, time to nominate and vote on some
important people!
It is time to start thinking about nominations for our Local
Hall of Fame. St. Marys Auxiliary will be voting on these
nominees at our regularly scheduled meeting on March
27th. These can then be submitted to the State Auxiliary for
consideration to their Hall of Fame at the last eBoard
meeting before the State Convention, which will be April
29th in Richmond Hill.
The following are the requirements for nominations:
1. Any member in a local Auxiliary (including dual
members) in the State of Georgia who shall have
accumulated 15 years of membership in the FOE, and
are in good standing at the time of nomination.
2. Any deceased member who was in good standing and on
the rolls of their local Aerie or Auxiliary in the State of
Georgia, and had not less than 15 years of service, at the
time of their demise.
3. The prospective nominee, during the course of her
membership in the FOE, shall have demonstrated
outstanding character, leadership and service, together
with showing a positive dedication to the principals of
the FOE. The nominee recommended must be approved
by motion on the membership floor at a regular meeting,
A letter of recommendation shall be forward to the Hall
of Fame Committee and include a statement that the
member being recommended meets the eligibility
requirements and shall be attested to, with the
proper Auxiliary seal and the signature of the Secretary
and the President. Auxiliary candidates also require a
complete resume of the member being nominated. NO
letter of recommendation will be accepted without the
proper documentation. Any one or two Auxiliary
members in good standing initiated prior to May 31st,
2002 or having had 15 years of service can be submitted
to the State Auxiliary Hall of Fame Committee for
consideration.
Alta Browning Smith nominees will also need to be turned
in at the same eBoard meeting, so if there are any nominees,
we will vote on approval at the regular meeting on April
10th as well. (The Alta Browning Smith Award is presented
each year to a Sister who best exemplifies dedication and
service to both the Fraternal Order of Eagles and her local
community.)
Ms. Eagle ballots will be available from March 1 through
March 31st (Bartenders have a current roster and the ballots
for both Ms. Eagle and Ms. Congeniality). ONE ballot per
Auxiliary member.
Ms. Congeniality ballots will also be available from March
1st through March 31st. (State Award Nominees are Sharon
Slaton, Mary Stagl, Vicki DeBoard, Brenda Toth,
Agnes Lake and Annie Taylor). Nominees do not
necessarily have to be a state officer. Any Auxiliary
member active in the state Auxiliary is eligible.
The by-law changes and the new affiliation agreement were
approved and mailed to the Grand Aerie.
Nominations for Officers will be at our regular meeting on
April 24th at 7pm.
From our President, Eagle Riders – Patricia Perrine
The Eagle Riders is currently raffling a beautiful Handmade Queen-Size Quilt! Tickets are $2.00
each or 3 tickets for $5.00. Proceeds will be used for future charitable contributions by the Eagle
Riders. The winning ticket will be drawn on March 17th during Fish Fry. You do not have to be present to win!
Tickets are available at the bar or ask any Eagle Riders member.
If you have any questions give me a call at 912-409-7294.
The Eagle Riders will be serving dinner on Wednesday, March 29th. Deb Weese will be cooking up some of her
awesome Salsa Meatloaf with Mashed Taters, Gravy, a Veggie, & a Roll. And Dawn will be whipping up a couple of her
fabulous Cheesecakes for Dessert! You get all this for only $8.00 so be sure to sign up on the clipboard in the Social Room!
The next Eagle Riders meeting is scheduled for Saturday, April 22nd. We will meet at Noon at the Aerie and, weather
permitting, ride to The Surf in Fernandina for lunch & a quick meeting. If it’s lousy weather, we’ll have our meeting at the
Aerie.
If you have any questions give me a call at 912-409-7294.
Ride Safe & remember to Look Twice - the life you save could be your own!
The Eagles’ Cry March, 2017 – Page 3
From our Chairman, Board of Trustees – Jaime Galaviz
The Motto for the Fraternal Order of Eagles is “People Helping People” …and our actions show how much we
really believe in that.
I need to restate a few things because it is becoming clear that not all members are reading (or heeding) this section of the newsletter. Many of you are, however, and for that we say,’ THANK YOU’ and ask you to please pass the word.
1) Event-related items (such as decorations, tables, chairs, etc.) should always be put away in their proper place, or thrown away, if they are not going to be used again. (see December 2016 issue)
This isn’t always happening… if you used it, you should put it away!
This has been brought up on multiple occasions to several
people, and some are repeat-offenders. For example, after a
recent event, tables and chairs were folded and placed in
front of the cabinets in the hallway, and the ones that
couldn’t fit there were left in the other hallway. This blocks
easy access to restrooms, and can be a safety issue. Is this
an example of “People Helping People?”
Of course, it’s always easier to leave items in the Aerie
building for someone else to put away, but the storage shed
is there for a reason. If something comes out of the storage
shed, please put it back. If, for some reason, you aren’t
sure where something should go, please ask.
If you think that there isn’t enough room, please go look.
You may have to shift some items, but there should be
space available. It has been done before.
Please – do the right thing by taking ownership of
your event from beginning to end. That includes
all cleanup and proper storage of items that were
used.
Volunteers are important for the success of this
organization – from little things to major efforts –
everything and everyone helps!!!
With that being said, please be considerate of our
volunteers. If you aren’t working in the kitchen, please stay
out of the kitchen… our workers have assignments and they
may not see you, and someone could get hurt. If you need
something out of the kitchen, ask one of the volunteers for
help.
Often, when they get busy and don’t have time to eat or just
aren’t ready to eat, they will put their name on a container
of food and place it in the cooler to eat later. Some have
found that when they come back, it is GONE! Someone
has taken something that doesn’t belong to them.
2) If it doesn’t belong to you - leave it alone.
If you have no business in the kitchen –
stay out.
Our Facebook Page is: St. Marys Eagles FOE #4379
Look for more activity! If you see a posting, and decide to
comment, please remember that everyone can see what
you say and post… so be careful.
Recently, on Facebook, an ‘event’ was ‘scheduled’ with a
time and date, and a deposit arrangement was made without
confirming with the Board of Trustees that the Social Room
was available.
This can, and did, cause confusion and a few
problems… with availability, wrong deposit amount, cost
per hour, rules/conduct during the event, number of people
(to ensure enough staff and supplies are on hand) and, most
importantly, a Contract.
3) THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES IS RESPONSIBLE FOR SCHEDULING ALL EVENTS.
We meet every Tuesday at 4:00 pm. to
review the calendar, and address comments
or any other business that has come up. (see February 2017 issue)
On a different note, the Aerie is planning a clean-up on
March 18th, starting at 9:00 am.
To complete our goal of working on
the Social Room and the Kitchen,
we may need to schedule an
additional workday.
It depends on how many volunteers
show up.
Hope to see you there. You can be a part of this!
The Eagles’ Cry March, 2017 – Page 4
Vickie, Cheryl and Bobbi want to say ‘THANKS SO MUCH!’ to everyone who helped and all who attended.
Not only was this event a LOT of fun, but we raised almost $600 for the Max Baer Heart Fund!

Are you in need of a Notary Public

It seems like you always need one
when the bank is closed, or the time
is not right. I live in St. Mary’s. I
want to let you know that I am a
Notary Public for a four-year term
which does not expire until February,
2021. Donations for services are
welcomed... and, if you are an Eagle,
your donation will go to one of our
great charities.
You are welcome to contact me for
more information, either by email
[email protected] or by phone 912-

service.

CONCESSIONS
If you are interested in helping to do
concessions on Thursday evenings at
Bingo . . . there is a sign-up sheet in
the little kitchen for your
convenience.
There are 3 ways to help:
1. Be the cook or part of the

3. or donate a dessert.
If you are interested in doing any of
the pre-mentioned wonderful acts of

What, someone else's name is already
there? Not to worry, I'm sure there
are plenty of other spots. Just pick
one.
If you have any questions, please
call Vicki DeBoard at 912-729-

you. P.S. The bartenders are not in

EAGLES HOST ANNUAL ART CONTEST The Fraternal Order of Eagles #4379 Aerie and Auxiliary held their annual Children's Art Contest in February. The Eagles'
Art Contest provides youth in grades 3-6 an outlet to showcase their creative skills coupled with a chance to win a cash prize.
The response from Camden County students was the best yet with over 120 entries from all elementary schools and 15
entries from St. Marys Middle School sixth graders.
Locally, first place winners receive $50.00, second place winners receive $30.00 and third place winners receive
$20.00. Prizes were presented Saturday morning, February 4th, at the St. Marys Fraternal Order of Eagles during an ice
cream and cake party for the prize winners and their families.
Placing in the Sixth-Grade Competition:
1st prize-Kaiya Lombard, 2nd prize-Isaiah Walker and 3rd prize-Donna Prior.
Placing in the Fifth-Grade Competition: 1st prize-Morgan LeBlanc, 2nd prize-Alandra Dempsey and 3rd prize-Felicia Bibliss.
Placing in the Fourth-Grade Competition: 1st prize-Alden Nelson, 2nd prize-Dalton Ensley and 3rd prize-Logan Drawdy.
Placing in the Third-Grade competition: 1st prize-Samuel Riley, 2nd prize-Joseph Schoonover and 3rd prize-Michaela Guy.
Additionally, all art work was sent to the Grand Aerie F.O.E. in Grove City, Ohio, to compete with art work from across the
United States and Canada. Internationally, first place winners receive $200.00, second place receives $100.00, third place
winners receive $75.00 and fourth place winners receive $50.00 in each grade level. There is also a Grand Prize winner who
receives $500.00.
Judges for the local competition this year were Madam President Julie Stanley, Past Worthy President L.W. Bruce, Worthy
Vice President Kirby Schuler, Worthy Chaplain Richard Anderson, and Debbie Biglow.
Camden County student, Veronica Cimento, placed fourth place internationally in the fourth-grade competition a couple of
years ago, and several years ago, Griffin Baker won first prize in the fourth grade. We believe we have a couple of pieces this
year that will place in the international competition.
Pictured in the photo from left to right: Logan Drawdy (3rd prize, grade 4), Dalton Ensly (2nd prize, grade 4), Isaiah Walker (2nd prize, grade 6), Alandra Dempsy (2nd prize, grade 5), Donna Prior (3rd prize, grade 6), Morgan LeBlanc (1st prize, grade 5), Kaiya Lombard (1st prize, grade 6), Joseph Schoonover (2nd prize, grade 3), Alden Nelson (1st prize, grade 4), Samuel Riley (1st prize, grade 3), Michaela Guy (3rd prize, grade 3) [Not pictured 5th Grade 3rd Place winner Felicia Bibliss.]

Because we are adding new members regularly, and because we are in the midst of trying to recruit more, it’s fitting to provide some helpful information.
THE BENEFITS OF BEING AN EAGLE The perks of being an Eagle member are countless. From lifelong friendships to care for your
family, Eagles are always ready to lend a helping hand and be a guiding influence in the lives of
every member. A renewed focus on both membership growth and retention is leading to the
development of a stronger and more prominent slate of benefits. Below are the various benefits
you have access to by being an Eagle.
MEMORIAL FOUNDATION
Since World War II, the Eagles have offered protection for the families of members through our
Memorial Foundation. The Memorial Foundation supports children (including those legally
adopted) of members who die while serving their country or at work.
All Eagle members and their families are automatically protected by this unprecedented safety net.
Part of being an Eagle is supporting our brothers and sisters when times get tough. The Memorial
Foundation was created to help provide medical and educational benefits to children of members
who lose their lives while serving their country or while at work. As an Eagle, you and your
family are automatically protected by this unprecedented safety net. Your children will be able to
attend college or vocational school and receive various forms of medical assistance.
What are the educational benefits?
Educational grants can be used for college or post-secondary institutions such as business, beauty,
nursing or other technical/trade schools. Online college tuition may also be reimbursed. Grants are
to defray the cost of tuition, fees, books and course-related supplies. Room and board is not
included. Payment is made directly to the college, university or institution upon receipt of official
school and/or bookstore statements.
Grant forms must be completed each year along with a transcript. Recipients must maintain a 2.0
grade point average and must be under the age of 25, unmarried and non-self-supporting.
When does the assistance stop?
Eligibility for medical assistance ceases on the child's 18th birthday or before if he or she becomes
married or self-supporting. No benefits will be paid for any injury or illness resulting from the
unlawful use of drugs, the commission or attempt to commit a crime, any self-inflicted injury,
elective cosmetic surgery or pregnancy of the Foundation child.
