Safety First

Safety glasses required when using power tools

Ramset can only be used by people who are Certified

http://www.ramset.com/patlicensing

Never lean walls against walls that have been stood/placed

When cutting sheathing/OSBBe sure to attach 3 - 2x4 boards on saw horses

The 2x4 boards will allow for a ‘chase’ when ripping OSB

Set saw blade depth to ½” – ¾”

Standing walls cont. (tips)

Green = BOTTOM

Be sure no gaps between walls

Use cleats to clamp walls together

Plumbing/Bracing walls:

use an 8’ level

Use 2 nails when tacking interior walls

Interior wall corners can be nailed completely off

Never attach blocks on garage floor for bracing

DO NOT remove wall bracing until roof is 80% decked.

Cut Plumbing Walls

Mark plumbing location to be cut.

Prior to cutting:

Move stud(s) if necessary.

Add a horizontal brace with scrap 2x4

Support wall under location of cut(s)

Bathtub

Must be 60”

Wall Issues/Solutions:

Wall is shortVerify wall/bottom plate or top plate is short comparing to floorplan.

DO NOT assume snap lines are correct.

If wall is ½” short, add OSB spacers on either end of wall.

Do not add shims at the corner or end of wall.

Be sure to rip cut OSB less than wall width, typically 3”

Nail to wall using either 8d or 2” roofing nails every foot.

If wall is ¼” short, install wall

Page 24: Framing Basics 1 - Dallas Area Habitat ·  · 2017-08-21Framing Basics 1 Dave Hermon Russ Root Stephen Seybold ... Drill hole with ½” bit Add/replace Sill Seal Lift wall onto

Wall issues/solutions: cont.

Wall is long

Verify wall/top plate/bottom plate is long

If wall is ½” long or less

knock stud into place.

If wall is longer than ½”

measure length to cut, remove end component, cut

each plate and replace component then install

wall.

Page 25: Framing Basics 1 - Dallas Area Habitat ·  · 2017-08-21Framing Basics 1 Dave Hermon Russ Root Stephen Seybold ... Drill hole with ½” bit Add/replace Sill Seal Lift wall onto

Stringing walls

String all exterior walls

2x4 on outside top corners, run string.

Use straight 2x4 under string to verify

walls are plumb.

After stringing and bracing walls, plumb all

interior walls with 8’ level and nail off.

Cap plate

Measure using bottom plates.

Refer to cap plate plan in Black Binder

Mark measurements on bottom plate and cap plate.

Cap plate only when walls are plumb and strung.

“Walk” cap plate

Overlap at least 4’ from where walls join/intersect.

2 nails over every stud, 5 nails on intersecting walls

Temporary Truss Support

Located in the front of the house where there is a dearth of interior walls.

Use wall pallet to make temporary wall.

Install before last exterior wall is stood.

Adjust to fit space.

DO NOT attach to slab.

Gable End Nailers/Truss Nailers

Located on all walls with gable truss

Placed on top of cap plate

Use non-finger jointed 2x4

‘Walk’ the nailer down the wall

No boards shorter than 4’

1 ½” inches from front edge, at least 1” from ends.

Use a 2x4 as a spacer

Make sure to cover corners

Blocking

With all Blocking

Verify on floorplan where blocking is required

Use non-finger jointed lumber

Use wide side of the block so its flush with interior face of the studs

Attach using 2-12d nails on each side of blocks

“toe nail” when needed.

Be sure at least 1 stud can be used to support shelving bracket(s)

Page 37: Framing Basics 1 - Dallas Area Habitat ·  · 2017-08-21Framing Basics 1 Dave Hermon Russ Root Stephen Seybold ... Drill hole with ½” bit Add/replace Sill Seal Lift wall onto

Blocking cont.

ADA/Bathroom BlockingMeasure each location or measure in corners and pop a line at 36” from slab

Can cut 2 2x4 at 31” to support ADA blocking for nailing

Kitchen BlockingEither measure at each location or pop a chalk line at 32”, 55” & 82” from slab.

Can use 2x4 cut at 80½”, 53½” and 30½” to support blocking while nailing

Deadwood

Placed on walls running

parallel to trusses

Use scrap 2x4, non-

finger jointed wood

Use 12d nails every 8-

12”; use at least 3 nails

No more than 3 inches

between pieces.

Cover corners

HVAC Closet

Do not install until after walls are strung and braced.

Prior to sheathing, be sure there are studs for nailers on all corners.

Don’t rest OSB on ground

Do not nail down deck, try to install before trusses go up.

Sheathing gables

All sheathing installed vertically

Measure king post from bottom of the gable to the peak

Transfer measurement over to OSB using correct pitch.

8d nails, no more than every 6” on perimeter and 12” in the field

Repeat on successive sheets
