CALL TO CONFESSION PRAYER OF CONFESSION Holy God, we know that sometimes we can be incredibly stubborn. We have

entered the season in which Your Light has been given to the world, your blessings have been poured out on the world, and yet all we can think about is our own problems, our own needs, our own desires. Help us to desire you, Lord. Help us to yearn for your presence. Nourish and heal us so that we may joyfully serve you. Wash away our jealousy, greed, and all negative thoughts and behaviors that stand in the way of our truly being the people you have called us to be. Again let us receive the blessings offered in creation, in the birth and baptism of Jesus, and in the ministry of the saints of light. We ask this in Jesus’ Name. Amen. (Silence for personal confession)

“Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’ “The King will

Session News

We Are a Family of Faith: Stewardship Campaign Update Heartfelt thanks to those who have submitted their 2017 commitment cards. There has been a strong response to our Family of Faith stewardship campaign. In fact, almost a third of all commitments reflect an increase over last year. However, due to changes in congregation membership (deaths, moves, etc.), giving is currently forecast to be approximately $100,000 less than 2016 levels. We appreciate your prayerful approach to your 2017 commitment. If you have not submitted your pledge yet, please send it to Stu Dodge at your earliest convenience. --Tina Creguer, Martha Boeve, Jack Farrow, Orlean Heidel

2017 Pledge card boxes are located just inside the parking lot doors - please pick up your box the next time you are in!

The Nominating Committee of the First Presbyterian Church of Plymouth is getting back to work. Several members from the 2016 committee are returning, but several are not, so we are seeking new members. The Nominating Committee’s role is to identify and issue calls to members of the congregation to serve as Elders and Deacons. Since we are in a transition period, the committee will also be looking for congregational members for the Self-Study Committee and, likely later in 2017, the Senior Minister Search Committee. If you are interested in serving or recommending someone to serve on the Nominating Committee or as an Elder, Deacon, Self-Study Committee, or Sr. Minister Search Committee position, please contact Clerk of Session Mike Balnaves. He can be reached at [email protected], by calling/texting 313-510-4578, or you can leave him a note in the Clerk’s mail box by the front desk in the Narthex. All responses are needed by Jan. 15, 2017.

Building & Grounds - Have you noticed... Like in our personal homes, our church occasionally experiences maintenance issues which can go undetected for a long time if not reported. We have a wonderful Wednesday morning team that addresses known issues on a weekly basis; however the people who use the spaces around the church are often the ones who notice when things aren’t working properly or could be improved. Therefore, if you notice a problem, or you have an idea about how to improve something around the church, please use this form to submit a ‘Help Request’ to our B&G team. Your assistance as we work to keep God’s house a beautiful and functional building is greatly appreciated.

Please note: Requests turned in by noon on Tuesday of each week will be sent to B&G for review and scheduling each Wednesday. You will be contacted directly if more information is needed regarding your request.

A huge note of appreciation to the Wednesday Men's Group and all the helpers who participated in the "take-down" of the Christmas decorations. The youth were a valuable asset in this process. Thank you again for the teamwork we experienced.

Blessings to all, Sharon Kaufman

The Wayne State and Madonna University students who have aged out of foster care were so grateful to get the care packages from FPCP. The packages were packed with homemade laundry bags with basic hygiene products, laundry and dishwashing soap, healthy treats, hats, gloves, a gift certificate and these wonderful quilts made and donated by the Dearborn Quilt Club. This is a picture of a student who will graduate this year in mortuary science. As you can see, he loves his gifts. Thank you for making these students who have been forgotten by others feel so special this time of year.

THANK YOU!

A single whole blood donation can save the lives of three people. January is National Blood Donor Month (since 1970), making it the perfect time for FPCP to host a blood drive.

The Red Cross Bloodmobile will be here at FPCP on Sunday, January 29, 2017 from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Appointments can be made after church services during the month of January or by going online at www.redcrossblood.org (sponsor code: fpcp) or by calling Diane at 313-549-7052. Walk ins are welcome, however, with the appointment management system, persons with appointments will take precedence over those without one. Thank you in advance for hearing the call and helping the Red Cross. Throughout southeastern Michigan, patients are counting on us. Children who suffer from sickle cell anemia or leukemia, adults with cancer, patients receiving liver or heart transplants, newborns and neonatal intensive care units and auto accident victims are in need of donations. You can help save lives when you donate during our American Red Cross blood drive. Without willing donors, the American Red Cross could not meet the needs at southeastern Michigan hospitals. Donating blood is easy, it costs nothing-except a little of your time-and will give a sense of pride and satisfaction that is beyond words. The need is constant. The gratification is instant. GIVE BLOOD. Thank you, the America Red Cross

Deacons

November 15, 2016

Dear Deacons,

Thank you so much for the birthday card you sent my mother. She

really appreciated the card and the fact that you though of her.

She turned 96 this year and lives in a nursing home. She is

bedridden, but her mind is still quite sharp.

Sincerely,

The Warmth of Other Suns: The Epic Story

of America's Great Migration by Isabel Wilkerson

In this epic, beautifully written masterwork, Pulitzer Prize–winning author Isabel Wilkerson chronicles one of the great untold stories of American history: the decades-long migration of black citizens who fled the South for northern and western cities, in search of a better life. From 1915 to 1970, this exodus of almost six million people changed the face of America. With stunning historical detail, Wilkerson tells this story through the lives of three unique individuals: Ida Mae Gladney, who in 1937

left sharecropping and prejudice in Mississippi for Chicago, where she achieved quiet blue-collar success and, in old age, voted for Barack Obama when he ran for an Illinois Senate seat; sharp and quick-tempered George Starling, who in 1945 fled Florida for Harlem, where he endangered his job fighting for civil rights, saw his family fall, and finally found peace in God; and Robert Foster, who left Louisiana in 1953 to pursue a medical career, the personal physician to Ray Charles as part of a glitteringly successful medical career, which allowed him to purchase a grand home where he often threw exuberant parties.
