Ken Robinson, CFP® President’s Message
Our annual Winter Symposium certainly kicked off the New Year with a bang last month. The event was a huge
success, and thankfully, we dodged the winter weather! I hope you were able to attend. Despite Punxsutawney Phil’s
prediction of another 6 weeks of winter, we can all hope for an early Spring. After all, the Super Bowl is behind us
and baseball Spring training is less than a month away. In the meantime, we have a lot of exciting events to look
forward to in the coming weeks.
On Friday, February 27th, we are holding our 2nd Annual Career Fair at the McLean Hilton in Tysons Corner. The
event was an enormous success last year, and we are expecting another big turnout this year. As a registered attendee,
you will have the opportunity to interview recent graduates and seniors seeking employment opportunities as well as
underclassmen looking for internships. Even if you are just exploring the possibly of hiring someone, you should sign
up for this event because you just might find the perfect fit for your firm. The Career Fair will include a luncheon
with keynote speaker Mark Tibergien, who is one of the most sought-after speakers in the country on the topic of
practice management and succession planning. Space is limited, so click HERE and register soon as an employer.
If you do not plan to participate in the Career Fair, you can still sign up for and attend the luncheon as a stand-
alone event. And you do not want to miss this luncheon with Mark Tibergien on Friday, February 27th! If you are
interested in attending only the luncheon, please click HERE to register.
As we move into March, there are a couple of great events on the calendar. The popular NexGen Study Group will
convene again on Tuesday, March 10th at the offices of SBSB in McLean, Virginia. If you are 36 or under, please
click HERE to sign up for this outstanding opportunity to learn and network with your NexGen colleagues.

We also have our Media Training and Luncheon Event on Thursday, March 19th at the Bethesda Country Club.
We are very fortunate to have Ben Lewis, Director of Public Relations for the Financial Planning Association,
conducting our Media Training this year. Ben is an excellent presenter as well as a wonderful resource for all public
relations and media matters. After Media Training is concluded, we will have our luncheon program with Helen
Modly of Focus Wealth Management, Ltd. Helen will be presenting on the topic of Inherited Retirement Plans and
all of the potential problems arising from the inheritance of different types of retirement accounts. Please click
HERE to register for one or both of these events.
Please visit our Community Calendar for a list of upcoming events and then add them to your calendar! We also have
published a comprehensive list of events for the year in our February Newsletter, so please turn to page 4 and get
everything on your calendar for the entire year.
As always, we need your feedback and suggestions to help us make our programs even better. So please reach out to
us with your thoughts and ideas. The contact information for our Board of Directors is listed HERE. And please get
involved and volunteer for one of our committees. It is a great way to make an impact and to build new relationships
with your colleagues.

FPA National Capital Area Chapter’s Career Day
A Professional Development Program and Job Fair
Where: Hilton McLean Tyson’s Corner (7920 Jones Branch Drive, McLean, VA 22102)
When: Friday, February 27th, 2015
Whom: Job and internship seekers, interviewing/hiring firms, financial planning program advisors, sponsors &
volunteers
What:
Career Day is a professional development event hosted by the National Capital Area chapter of the
Financial Planning Association. The event is aimed at all levels of financial planners – from those students just
beginning to take financial planning courses and seeking internships to learn more about the profession, to
seasoned professionals who run some of the most successful businesses around.
Students from nearby financial planning programs are invited to attend for a multitude of reasons: interview
with the leading firms in the area for internship and/or full-time positions; meet some of the movers and shakers in
the financial planning profession; meet young, NexGen members in the area and begin to build your professional
network of peers; hear NexGen members discuss and explain their transition from student to professional and all
the struggles and successes along the path; learn the best tips for success; and more!
Professionals are encouraged and invited to attend and can expect to be provided the opportunity to: meet
the next generation of financial planners and learn more about them and their excitement for the profession; learn
more about the financial planning programs nearby from the advisors who attend; network with your own
professional network of local financial planners; interview students and others seeking internships and/or full-time
employment; and more!
Advisors from these nearby colleges and universities are also invited to attend to spread the word about the
financial planning programs and educate those who may not be familiar with the school/program. It’s a great
opportunity to meet financial planners and get your school on their list. These planners are likely extremely
willing to meet your students and provide guidance, tips and advice; and maybe even attend a program meeting at
your school.
National Capital Area FPA members who are not currently hiring or interested in the Career Fair piece of
the day are invited to join us for a luncheon program – network, get to know the students, enjoy a delicious lunch
and listen to the invited speaker.

7AM – 6PM – McLean Hilton, McLean, VA
Key Note Speaker: Ed Slott
Presenting: Ed Slott’s 2015 Action Plan:
A Business-Building Program for Financial Advisors
2015 Brings New Opportunities for Top Advisors
to Showcase their Retirement Panning Expertise
Stealth taxes are back and tax bracket management is critical. The tax planning paradigm has
changed - income and retirement tax planning for your best clients will trump traditional planning. Life insurance
and other tax free solutions are more valuable. Your top clients and prospects are the prime targets and need help
navigating an increasingly complex tax code that will erode their retirement income and leave less for heirs. Many
of these problems are already lurking under the hood of their retirement plans waiting to strike at the worst
possible time – at retirement, when the funds are needed the most. Learn how to create lasting practical retirement,
tax and estate plans that showcase your expertise, and eliminate your competition for good.
Don’t Miss this Symposium! Register on line at www.fpanca.org!
