Latest Issue of SSHRC News Now Available

We are pleased to present the latest issue of SSHRC News, in which you will find recent information on SSHRC activities and achievements of interest to the social sciences and humanities research community. This issue includes the latest information on funding opportunities within the Talent, Insight and Connection programs and tri-agency initiatives. You’ll find the SSHRC News on the SSHRC website under Latest News. We welcome your feedback and/or questions and thank you for your continued collaboration.

Proposed Reforms of Open Programs and Peer Review CIHR has initiated a process to design a new Open Suite of Programs and peer review system that ensures the long-term sustainability of CIHR's contribution to the Canadian health research enterprise, removes barriers, and enables researchers from all pillars to improve CIHR's ability to deliver on its mandate. CIHR sees these reforms as an opportunity to take a holistic approach to designing a new Open Suite of Programs and peer review process, and to address multiple challenges at once. As part of our ongoing discussions on the CIHR reforms, we are pleased to share with you the "Open Suite of Programs and Peer Review Enhancements" discussion paper. This document provides an overview of our current thinking on the new design.

*****Application forms now available*****

Connection Grants support events and activities geared toward short-term, targeted knowledge mobilization initiatives. These events and activities represent opportunities to exchange knowledge and to engage on research findings of value to those participating. Events and outreach activities funded by a Connection Grant may often serve as a first step toward more comprehensive and longer-term projects potentially eligible for funding through other SSHRC funding opportunities. Connection Grants support workshops, colloquiums, conferences, forums, summer institutes or other events or activities that facilitate:

disciplinary and/or interdisciplinary exchanges in the humanities and social sciences;

scholarly exchanges between those working in the social sciences and humanities and those working in other research fields;

intersectoral exchanges between academic researchers in the humanities and social sciences and researchers and practitioners from the public, private and/or not-for-profit sectors; and/or

international research collaboration and scholarly exchanges between researchers, students and non-academic partners from other countries.

CIHR Webinar: “Art of Writing a CIHR Application” The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) will offer four English and two French webinar sessions on "The Art of Writing a CIHR Application" in April 2012. CIHR is offering this webinar to the entire research community (including researchers and research institution staff who support researchers). In this webinar, participants will learn some tips and get insights for writing a successful application for current competitions and programs offered at CIHR, from the planning stages through writing and submitting a CIHR application. Please note that the technical aspects of how to apply using ResearchNet will not be covered in this webinar. To view the dates of webinar sessions or to register for a session, go to the new Facilitated Online Session (Webinar) web page on the CIHR website: http://www.cihr-irsc.gc.ca/e/45096.html.

Catalyst Grant – Institute of Aging Among the stated objectives of the opportunity is to “encourage researchers from other fields to consider research questions related to Health Services and Systems for an Aging Population”. Note that this is a 1 year, $100,000 grant so the intention is that it will lead into wider research projects. Partnerships with other institutions are highly encouraged.

CIHR-NSERC Collaborative Health Research Projects (CHRP) Program The CHRP program supports innovative interdisciplinary collaborative research projects requiring participation from the natural sciences or engineering community together with the health sciences community. Proposed research projects must have a strong focus on knowledge translation (KT) and lead to health and economic benefits for Canadians, more effective health services and products, and/or a strengthened health care system. Funding for CHRP projects can be for up to three years for defined projects with clear milestones and decision points.

Page 6: FP Bulletin - Issue 27 May-June2012

To learn more please book an appointment with Josephine Adda [email protected] or call extension 621

Continued…… The CHRP program requires that projects adopt an integrated knowledge translation (IKT) approach (http://www.cihr-irsc.gc.ca/e/39033.html)—i.e., projects where knowledge/technology users that could benefit from the research are meaningfully engaged at appropriate stages throughout the research process. The knowledge/technology user's engagement in the research process may vary in intensity and complexity depending on the nature of the research and their information needs.
