What is Cat S·O·S Services?

• For 50 years, the S·O·S Services fluid analysis program has helped prevent unexpected failures and

unplanned downtime while reducing owning & operating costs by leveraging our Caterpillar branded

proprietary process that turns oil, coolant, and fuel analysis data into valuable information.

• S·O·S Services assess whether the product is at risk for potential failure.

• Provides expert advice, proper replacement parts, and any actions needed.

• We offer fluid analysis for all types of products, whether they’re made by Caterpillar or

another OEM, for applications ranging from agriculture and aviation, to landscaping and

landfill, to mining, marine and more

Distribution of Fuels - 2020

The percentage of vessels using HFO is expected to go up to 11% as a greater number of larger vessels are getting fitted with scrubbers

Page 30: Four-stroke lubrication options post-IMO 2020

Need for new formulations

Preference for Group II base oils

Base Oil(70%)

Additive (30%)

Typical Lube Oil Composition

Additive package will change with respect to fuel and base oil group

Need for testing of compatibility of same type of lube oils between two different manufacturers

Page 31: Four-stroke lubrication options post-IMO 2020

True Lubrication Worth (TLW)

Viswa performed a benchmarking study for a big vessel owner/ operator who were using lube oils from two major brands. The performances of these oils were measured and validated in monetary terms using the TLW Index.

The study involved the comparison of main engine crankcase oil, auxiliary engine crankcase oil & cylinder lube oil. The oils were evaluated based on - Energy Efficiency- Volatility- Oxidation Stability- Ability to release water and entrained air

Using facts and real time data from vessel operators, Viswa’s Index independently assesses these performance properties of the new lube oils and validate them in monetary terms.

For example, a main engine crankcase oil of a brand A, achieves a TLW index score of 60.61 while another brand B, achieves a score of 56.75. The difference between these two scores comes to 3.86. The TLW index then converts this 3.86 to an equivalent Dollar value.

Viswa’s proprietary Index to assess the performance properties between lube oils of the same type but different brands and compute the difference in monetary terms.

Page 32: Four-stroke lubrication options post-IMO 2020

Points to Consider

On the crankcase vent of the Aux. Engine, it is better to fit a desiccant breather to reduce the oxidation effects

Stability and long-term storage of lube oils

Soot, sludge & viscosity increase from combustion gases blowby leading to fast deterioration of crankcase oil quality

Lacquering of liner surface leading to increased friction and loss of energy resulting in increased fuel consumption

Reduction in fuel consumption leads to reduction in emissions

Page 33: Four-stroke lubrication options post-IMO 2020

Fuel Oil Chemistry & Impact on Base Oils

Usage of re-refined base oils from dirty lube oils – Issues associated with this

Increase in the cost of base oils - More feedstock is diverted towards the production of alternative fuels- Price impact on base oil groups will differ for each group based on their demand and replaceability

VLSFOs from aromatic crude sources tend to have higher content of asphaltenes.

This causes soot, sludge formation and increased sediment leading to purifier choking

VLSFOs from paraffinic sources tend to have higher Estimated Cetane Number (ECN) which has the potential to cause damage to piston and ring pack leading to increase blowby

Microbial and fungal contamination when fuel is stored for more than 6 months particularly in the presence of moisture is higher from paraffinic VLSFOs. This is of concern to engines that are idle for a long time

Page 34: Four-stroke lubrication options post-IMO 2020

Concluding Points

Ongoing R&D – No final solutions yet on the best lube oil

Lube oil companies are switching over to Group II oils and consequently the appropriate additive package

Impact of volatility in lube base oil prices
