Sender

Receiver

For contactless sensing of objects, the sender emits a pulsed infrared light inthe invisible spectrum (8800 angstroms / 880 nm). When an object movesbetween the sender and receiver, the light beam is interrupted, and anelectrical signal is sent to a receiving device.

When detecting translucent, permeable objects, transmitter beam strength canbe reduced by adjusting a potentiometer.

The sender can also accept a test input which simulates interruption of theoptical path.

Operation:The pressure adjustment screw 1 variesthe spring tension applied to the bellows 2,bringing them into the high frequencyscattering field of the initiator 3. Inputpressure 4 causes a change in scatteringfield penetration, which is recorded by theinitiator and amplified electronically 5,yielding a non-contact output signal 6 fortriggering digital circuits and relays. Applications:PEN-M5 is ideal for interfacing withyour PC or electronic controls forapplications requiring conversion of apneumatic pressure into an electricalsignal; use it as a:

1) Differential PressureFor this function, a pressure rangingfrom 28 in Hg to 120 psi / -0.95 to 8bar may be connected to both con-nections P1 and P2. Desired differen-tial pressure switching is set by springtension (pressure screw adjustment).

2) Vacuum SwitchA vacuum is connected to connec-tion P2. Vacuum-switching pressuremay be set within a range of 6 to 24 in Hg / -0.20 to -0.80 bar. Anoutput is obtained when the presetvacuum is attained.

3) Pressure SwitchPressure ranging from 3.7 to 120 psi /0.25 to 8 bar is applied at connec-tion P1. Desired switching pressurecan be set by the adjustment screw.If the preset switching pressure isattained, an electric signal is pro-duced.

The values of the two pressure connections arecompared by a pressure sensor. An electricalsignal is formed from the difference of the twovalues.

If the signal reaches or exceeds the set value,the switch operates.

The switch may be used in normally closed, normally open or transfer modes,depending on the connection.

The switching point can be adjusted via two potentiometers (coarse and fineadjustment).

The set values (switching point and hysteresis) can be measured as a voltageat the measuring points.

The switching output current is adjusted to MZ-, MY-, MV- and ME- solenoidcoils.

Adjustable pneumatic signals are con-verted to electrical signals by the pressureactuated switch.

When the pressure at connection Xreaches the preset shift point, a diaphragmshifts an electrical switch. The shift pointis infinitely adjustable between 15 and180 psi / 1 and 12 bar.

Connection diagrams:

The pressure switch is preset with an upper shiftpoint of 90 psi ± 3% / 6 bar ± 3% and a lower shiftpoint of 72 psi ± 3% / 4.8 bar ± 3%.

The upper and lower shift points can be increasedby turning the adjusting screw clockwise (1 turncorresponds to about 19.5 psi / 1.3 bar). Hysteresiscan be changed by turning the hex nut under thecover cap. Hysteresis can be changed withoutchanging the upper shift point (see graph).Clockwise rotation increases hysteresis andcounter-clockwise rotation decreases hysteresis.

The electrical switch may be used in normallyclosed, normally open or transfer modes,depending on the connection.

At high switching frequencies or when large inductances are switched, an RCspark-suppression circuit must be provided for DC operation. Ideally, the circuitshould be arranged in parallel to the switch or load with R and C beingconnected in series.

The following relationship should be observed for spark-suppression elements:Capacitor C should be as large in µF as load current l is in A and should berated for an operating voltage of at least 630 to 1000 V. Resistance R shouldequal load resistance with a rating of approximately one-half to one watt.
