KEYNOTE

Walter F. Mondale’s record of public service includes Vice

President of the United States, U.S. Ambassador to Japan,

U.S. Senator, and Attorney General for the State of

Minnesota. In his first year as Vice President, after visiting

camps in Thailand sheltering refugees fleeing the Vietnam

War, Mondale worked to significantly increase the number of

people accepted for resettlement into the United States, as

well as increase funds to build refugee camps in neighboring

countries. His efforts helped provide resettlement

opportunities for 1 million refugees, including in Minnesota.

Dr. MayKao Y. Hang is the President and CEO of the Amherst

H. Wilder Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to

improving lives in the Greater St. Paul community and

beyond through research, direct services and community

building. Wilder’s programs, such as the Southeast Asian

Services program and Center for Social Healing and Wellness,

provide culturally appropriate services for immigrants and

refugees who are at high risk for developing mental health

problems due to previous trauma and/or the stress of

migration and resettlement; such as war, violence, poverty,

and acculturation.
