Austin is home to the world-famous SPAM® Museum, one of the top tourist attractions in the state of Minnesota. Visit the Hormel Historic Home and learn the story of the Hormel family and the founding of Hormel Foods, Inc. The banquet center seats an

additional 200 people and offers the perfect atmosphere for conferences, family gatherings, graduation parties, weddings and motorcoach lunches. Come tour the home, discover the details of turn-of-the-century life and learn about the family behind the Hormel name.

Walk the trails of the Jay C. Hormel Nature Center, just within the Austin city limits. This 507-acre preserve was established in 1971 and features restored and remnant prairie, hardwood forest, wetlands and meandering streams. Spot deer, mink, raccoons, salamanders and a variety of birds and other native wildlife along the ten-mile hiking trail. The preserve also offers bus tours, school programs and classes for adults and children.

10 – 11:30 amFirst stop is the Hormel Nature Center. This gem is not to be missed. Visit with the resident naturalist and enjoy the wildlife at this 507-acre center featuring an Interpretive Building, enabling guests to see living displays that feature local critters. Fun, seasonal offerings such as maple syruping and apple cidering are offered as well.

11:30 – 12:30 pmRelax over lunch at one of Austin’s family-owned restaurants.

12:45 – 2:00 pmDessert will be served on the SPAM®Town Belle, which docks at East Side Lake every spring. Enjoy root beer floats aboard this 36-foot paddle wheel boat, taking riders from April through September.

2 – 3:30 pmThe SPAM® Museum features videos and displays depicting the rich history of the Hormel Foods

Corporation. The tour takes visitors through a myriad of exhibits and eras in an interactive, educational and fun way of sharing their story. Don’t forget to visit the SPAM® Shop!

Faribault Sample Itinerary9 – 10:00 amTake in a little history when you arrive with a tour of The Cathedral of Our Merciful Saviour. This is the oldest cathedral in Minnesota. Built in 1862-1869, it was the first church in the Episcopal Church in the United States of America designed as a cathedral.

10 – 11:00 amTour the Paradise Center for the Arts. This beautifully restored local theater is rich with Hollywood genre architecture. Browse the art gallery and consider coming back later tonight for a show.

11 – 1:00 pmNext up, visit The Cheese Cave, a mecca for cheese lovers and culinary connoisseurs. Learn about and sample blue cheese that is manufactured in the caves of Faribault Dairy. They have a full bar where they perform wine & cheese pairings and serve light lunches. They make their own cheese curds fresh every week right there in the store while customers watch. Bring your friends and see why they are so much more than a gourmet artisan cheese shop!

1 – 2:30 pmA must-stop is the Faribault Woolen Mill. The plant, which dates back to the 1890s, at one time had a workforce of about 80 and produced half the

woolen blankets made in the United States. Come and feel the difference in their “all American made” products; you won’t want to go home without one!

2:30 – 5:30 pmContinue the afternoon shopping. It is so easy to get what you are looking for while shopping in Faribault. It doesn’t matter if you are by yourself, with your friends, or even have the whole family with you; Faribault has many wonderful shopping adventures waiting. 9 – 11:00 amVisit the State School Orphanage Museum to learn the story of Minnesota’s orphans from 1886-1945. Explore and tour the grounds of the West Hills Campus and stop at Cottage 11. Highlights include the Children’s Cemetery, audio kiosks, root cellar, gift shop and, of course, the opportunity to walk through an original cottage from the orphanage era and learn the story of the boys who lived there.

11 – 12:30 pmShop ‘til you drop at the Medford Outlet Center, with over 32 stores with discounted outlet pricing. Tour operators and tour attendees can stop in the mall office for coupon books and additional goodies!

1:30 – 3:30 pmExperience life in Steele County at the turn of the 20th century at the Village of Yesteryear and discover the new Steele County History Center.

3:30 – 5:00 pmStop by the former home of Daniel C. Gainey, founder of the Jostens Ring Company in Owatonna. This French-Normandy home and former Arabian horse farm has beautiful grounds and offers pre-arranged tours. Or see the Winton Guesthouse located on the grounds of the University of St. Thomas Gainey Conference Center. The Winton Guesthouse was designed by Minnesota architect Frank Gehry as a playhouse for his grandchildren and was recently moved to this property in 2010.

What to do in Owatonna, MinnesotaMinnesota State School Orphanage Museum & Cottage 11Minnesota’s only state-run orphanage (from 1886 to 1945) is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Relive history through pictures, artifacts and personal stories by children who were raised at the orphanage.

Louis Sullivan’s National Farmers’ BankBuilt from 1906-1908, the National Farmers’ Bank is widely recognized as one of the premier pieces of “Prairie School Architecture” in America. This historic landmark was designed by world-renowned architect Louis Sullivan. Highlights include stained glass windows, gold leaf arches, chandeliers weighing 2.25 tons each, and murals.

Cabela’sCabela’s is the largest fishing, hunting and outdoor gear store in the Midwest and a place the whole family can enjoy. With three million visitors a year, it is the second most popular tourist attraction in Minnesota. Enjoy animal displays, an indoor aquarium, shopping, café and fudge shoppe.

Reptile and Amphibian ZooCome and experience the amazing creatures of the reptile and amphibian world, including snakes, turtles, lizards, crocodilians, toads, frogs, and salamanders—over 100 kinds of animals from all over the world! Frank Gehry’s Winton Guest HouseThis intricate structure was designed by internationally acclaimed architect Frank Gehry. The guest house is the only Gehry-designed residence open to the public.
