a strange fieldA CONCERTINA art book is the first publication to come from the University’s Art and Design Department’s Sequential Press.

Elizabeth Kealy-Morris, a Senior Lecturer in Art and Design, worked with artist and Visiting Lecturer Stephen Clarke on the book called a strange field.

In 2004, Stephen visited the Burren on the west coast of Ireland on a field trip to the Burren College of Art. The trip, organised by Professor David Ferry, was a part of his Master’s degree course in Fine Art Printmaking at Winchester School of Art. The Burren is known for its unusual mix of arctic, Mediterranean and alpine plants, as well as rare insects and animals. The images capture how one evening, as the light was dimming, Stephen came across a caravan park. The unpopulated site seemed out of place in this area noted for natural beauty and the modern caravans became imbued with the same sense of mystery that characterises the ancient stones of surrounding prehistoric sites.

Ten of these photographs have been printed into the book. This artist book has been shortlisted to appear at the Impressions art book exhibition which will be part of the Galway International Art Festival 2016 in July.

Stephen is an independent artist, writer and lecturer based in the North West of England. His writing and practice encompass collage and photography. He has published several photobooks with the independent publisher Café Royal Books. Elizabeth Kealy-Morris is currently engaged in a practice-based PhD entitled The Artist Book: Making as embodied knowledge of practice and the self. The study considers the autoethnographic nature of the artist book and the ways in which knowledge is developed through making with one’s hands.

Outstanding Nursery celebrates 10-year anniversaryCHILDREN and staff at the nursery based at the Warrington Campus threw a special birthday party in June to celebrate its 10th anniversary.

Staff at the Nursery, which is situated in its own grounds on the Campus; organised a garden party for the children, with balloons, cake and party games, while a special birthday lunch was provided by the University’s Catering team.

Kerry Williams, Nursery Manager, said: “It was a lovely occasion – all the children and staff were really excited! Six of our staff have been working at the Nursery since it first opened so it was a very special day for them too.

“It has been wonderful to see the Nursery grow from strength to strength over the past 10 years, resulting in an outstanding award in our last inspection and more recently, a Healthy Eating Award from Warrington Borough Council.

“We enjoy working with the children at the Nursery so much, and the children that come here enjoy it too!”

The Nursery first opened its doors in 2006 and has been committed to providing high quality childcare for children aged three months to five years. The setting is registered for up to 48 children per session and has a dedicated team of highly trained staff.

Places at the Nursery are open to children of the general public as well as University staff and students.
