FORREX Fire Suppression System Understanding fires in engine bays
What is Fire
Fire is simply a chemical chain reaction that takes place when the correct
conditions are present in an engine bay, the conditions and the range of potential
ignition sources to create an ever-present fire risk.
The Fire Triangle
Heat, Fuel and Oxygen are required for fire to exist. Remove any one of these
elements and the chemical reaction that creates the flames cannot continue.
The Feedback Loop of Fire Once a fire has started, the self-reciprocating reaction of the flames swiftly spreads the fire if
there is nothing to interrupt it - this is called the Feedback Loop of Fire’.
FUEL
IF LEFT UNINTERRUPTED,
FIRE CREATES A SELF-GENERATING CYCLE CALLED
THE FEEDBACK LOOP OF FIRE.

Fire in Vehicles - Investigation
• 90 % of fires, reason recognized
• 50 % of fires could be avoid due to better service & maintenance
• 2/3 of insurance expenses from “third party cost!”
• Not expected to get fire
• Too high investment
• We do have insurance to cover it

FORREX Fire Suppression System Challenges – High temperatures
• Closed engine compartment can reach up to 370C area near at turbo
• On going air temperature at air appr.100C* , within flow effect up to 180 C* at surface
• Pre heaters
• High pressure systems create heat (fuel etc.)
• Catalytic convertor from. 250C* to 1000 C*
FORREX Fire Suppression System Challenges – Alternative fuels
• (CNG) Natural Gas
• (LNG) Liquefied Natural Gas
• (LPG) Liquefied petroleum Gas
• (DME) Dimethyl Ether
• (H2) Hydrogen , fuel cell
FORREX Fire Suppression System Challenges – Hybrid technology, batteries

FORREX Fire Suppression System Challenges – after market installation
FORREX Fire Suppression System Challenges – High or low operational temperature
• Extinghuisant at low temperatures
• Nitrogen
• Continually change climate
FORREX Fire Suppression System Challenges – Service & Maintenance culture
• Auto-ignition temperatures (Hydrocarbon liquids)
- Diesel 230 C*
- Power steering oil 213 C*
- Engine oil 231 C*
- Transmission oil 213 C*
- Coolant (50/50) 483 C*

FORREX Fire Suppression System How Forrex tackles the Fire Triangle
Prevention of Reignition
The Dafo System tackles the risk of reignition both by cooling and saturation of
the fuels and ignition sources with Wet Chemical Agent spray but also by leaving
a coating of Forrex over the protected surfaces to continue cooling and cut off the
fuels’ oxygen supply.
FUEL
The film left behind by the
Forrex blocks the fuels
access to oxygen.
Forrex spray absorbs heat &
cools surfaces
Forrex cools and leaves a film on top of
flammable liquids.
Water based Forrex cools, coats and saturates
flammable solids.

FORREX Fire Suppression System AFFF Vs LVS
AFFF: Aqueous film forming foam,
consisting of fluorocarbon and
hydrocarbon surfactants blended with
various solvents, preservatives and
stabilizer's.
LVS: Wet Chemical Agent that is a
unique blend of organic and inorganic
salts, coupled with surface active
ingredients.

FORREX Fire Suppression System System Design
The FORREX-installation normally protects engine room, converter, hydraulic equipment
and brakes. The normal amount of extinguishing fluid is 3 litres per cubic metre of
protected volume, stored in one or more tanks.
The tanks are activated electrically via the fire alarm or manually directly on the tank valve
or from a pull handle.
To meet the requirements of the insurance companies, the system must be designed
according to their projecting rules and installed by an authorized fitter.
