Trip Report- Israel Med tech – March 23-28, 2019

Indian delegation was of 15 people and included businessmen, innovators, scientists, hospital

administrators and journalists.

We visited their healthcare facilities and provider offices at Clalit, Hadassah, attended the biotech

conference and interacted with innovators at one of the Medtech incubators.

Clalit- HMO Tel Aviv

http://www.clalit-global.co.il/en/

Clalit is the largest of the four insurance groups and healthcare providers and provides seamlessly

integrated and completely digital health (paperless for the last 25 years) to all the citizens.

Hadassah is their largest tertiary care hospital with integrated health records

The visit to Hadassa and Clalit were most eye opening for me to understand how a healthcare can

seamlessly integrate /interconnect data (clinical, molecular, radiologic etc.) and patient records for

continuity of care through primary secondary and tertiary levels of care. How the data collected in

these systems, can then be mined and utilized to create unique solutions for the problems facing the

people. The health care is truly that, “health” care and not just care during sickness.

The logistics excellence center with its central drug/pharmacy purchase, was most impressive –

wherein the hospitals do not need to stock up on the supply, the supply chain is managed most

effectively by a central team.

The mobile surgical simulation center was also a wonderful piece of medical technology that is being

used to up skill surgeons and nurses.

The concept of Biohouse –a workspace for innovators within the medical hospitals was a very new

concept for me.

While there were some good new technology at display at the Med in Israel conference, the message

by DG MOH Moshe Bar Siman Tov was the most relevant for me –wherein they are using data to

create proactive predictive and preventive models to support personalized health care.

The visit to the e-health ventures incubation center was interesting as it exposed us to the Israeli

innovation ecosystem.

The steps suggested by me in my feedback session to the embassy in India were as follows:

1. If medical grand rounds of institutions such as Medanta and Hadassa can be shared/synchronized

into Global Grand rounds–it may lead towards communication between clinicians and

researchers in both countries.(Medanta participates in Global infectious disease grand rounds with

Johns Hopkins and research and innovation opportunities have arisen from that).

2. Israel is leading in telemedicine and coordinating advanced health care even at primary care level

by telemedicine – perhaps an ideal village could be created using the same in India – we could

integrate Yoga and traditional medicine into the paradigm of preventive health here (Medanta has

proposed and adarsh yog gram to the ministry of AYUSH previously).

3. Institutions such as Medanta and the Medanta Institute of Education and Research will be more

than happy to act as research and innovation centre to validate, and, utilize relevant Israeli

Medtech.

4. The concept of a Biohouse could be duplicated within tertiary care hospitals such as Medanta with

clinicians, researchers, innovators co-located within the hospital.

Mission Stop Dengue: Stakeholder’s Meeting

World Health Day: April 7, 2017

Auditorium, Medanta - The Medicity, Gurugram, Haryana

Dengue is a major public-health concern in the National Capital region with increasing number of

cases being reported every year. It is the most rapidly spreading mosquito-borne viral disease, with a

30-fold increase in global incidence over the past 50 years. The National Capital region falls in highly

suitable climate for Dengue propagation and thus the highest Dengue risk.

The Mission Stop Dengue is a multi-stakeholder effort initiated by Dr. Naresh Trehan, MIER and the

Medanta hospital with the civic administration, research teams and the public to reverse this trend of

growing number of Dengue cases in May 2016. (http://missionstopdengue.in/)

Summary of Medanta Institutional Tissue Repository (MITR)

Scope: To enable discovery and validation of novel biomarkers, diagnostic tests and new therapeutics.

A bio-repository is place that collects human biological material (specimens) and associated data for

research purposes. These help advance medical treatment of the disease like by finding new markers

to identify the disease early or find new sites for medicines to act.

The bio-repositories have a growing impact on medical research and represent a huge opportunity for

public heath impact.

Start Date: 14-JUL-2017

Summary: The Medanta Institutional Tissue Repository (MITR) is collecting, processing and storing

the biological samples in compliance with in-house SOPs and ICMR Ethical Guideline.

The Medanta Institutional Tissue Repository (MITR) is running under the department of Medanta

Institute of Education and Research (MIER), which is a non-profit trust, proposed that benefits

will be shared between the investigators, MIER, and the community from which the participants

have arisen (disease specific patient advocacy organizations or the community per se towards

awareness and early testing)

MITR provides the researcher a reliable and organized source of (frozen) human tissues for RNA-

based analysis with corresponding relevant clinical information.
