It feels great to be back to work after an extended leave.

I hope you have had a nice summer. At Radio 4, many of us were running at full steam preparing for the launch of the Young Music Makers 2011 programmes. As you can see from the cover photo, the YMMs candidates are ready to share their artistry with you. As of now, most of the YMMs have already recorded their CD tracks and radio and TV programmes. From September till November, we will hear and watch them perform on Radio 4, RTHK Education TV, and RTHK’s website. You will also be able to know a little bit about them. After all the programmes have been broadcast, you will be invited to take part in a public poll to decide on which YMM will perform at the Final Live Recital on 19 January. At the same occasion, the YMM2011 CD will be officially launched and all candidates will receive their well-deserved certificates of achievement. No matter if you are a listener, viewer or net user, Young Music Makers 2011 welcomes you to witness their musical talent, and be part of this exciting event.

In addition to music-making by young artists, this month Radio 4 also brings you performances featuring the more ‘familiar’ names. Both the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra and the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra will have their subscription opening concerts in September. Tune in to Live on 4 for these two special concerts - a Mozart and Mahler programme from the HKPO, and exotic voices from Guizhou with the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra. Please refer to the Concert Highlights for more details.

As the BBC Proms draws to a close, this month we also bring you a number of performances (including the beloved Last Night of the Proms) from this long-standing annual music gala.

Finally, we give a warm welcome to Tim Wilson who will be your host for Jazzing Up in September and October. Tune in for, as Tim says, his favourites from the world of ‘free music’.

Jonathan Douglas talks to four remarkable young talents: British conductor and composer Alexander Prior,

American violinist Simone Porter, Chinese-American cellist Nathan Chan, and Hong Kong pianist Aristo Sham,

who gave the premiere of Prior’s Triple Concerto in the International Arts Carnival this summer.

J : What kind of challenge was it to deal with playing a new work by Alexander Prior?

S : We were lucky enough to be able to ask him about parts of it on Facebook! I guess the challenge is that it’s so new you can’t reference any great soloists who did it before and there are lots of new techniques that aren’t used too often. But it all works out in the end. The fact that it’s so new would be a challenge but nothing we can’t overcome.

J : Nathan, when you encountered the Triple Concerto for the first time, what was your initial reaction?

N : I think what is interesting about Alex’s pieces is that each one is so different and so intriguing from a soloist’s perspective, because it’s not what you normally would expect. Once this

journey goes on and you reach the end or the climax, you look upon the adventure with a sense of satisfaction. I think everything works out in the end. I was certainly expecting something different from the beginning, but once I was at the end stages I was quite satisfied.

J : Did you feel when you gave the performance ultimately, that this piece after all makes sense?

N : I think back to what Alex was saying about how his pieces are written in a sort of concerto grosso style in which you really feel part of a team in these sort of pieces. It’s you with the orchestra, not you and the orchestra. When you interpret that message of you being with and fitting into something else, there is something quite interesting when you zoom out of the telescope.

J : Were there moments in the music that you felt were almost insurmountably difficult?

N : Not from a physical standpoint but maybe more from the emotional standpoint. You really have to push your boundaries. If you feel comfortable in certain places then I don’t think you are doing your job quite right. Alex really

wants us to go to the edge, either breaking a string on the piano, or make a cello sound like an electric guitar. These are things you have to tackle as a soloist.

AP : There’s a tempo marking in this piece which says ‘frighteningly vulgar, as if in the French strip cabaret, but in the context of Brueghel the Younger-like image of hell with all the creatures of darkness surrounding you.’ So that’s what they have to play!

J : Aristo, how much opportunity have you had to deal with Alex’s emotional extremities?

AS : This is my first Alex Prior piece and in the score you can see a lot of triple fffs and a thousand consecutive accents! I didn’t expect it to be this intense. You don’t get to thump the piano for half an hour consecutively a lot!

J : Do you feel that despite all these new techniques you have to deal with, things are coming together?

AS : Yes, they are. The solo parts on their own don’t really make a lot of sense but when the whole thing is put together, it sounds great.

J : Alex, I have been hearing from the three young soloists about the extremes and they are understating it. Where does all this emotional intensity come from?

AP : My music has changed quite a lot recently. I have my principles, my influence, colours and sounds I like, but I have switched from a pastoral observation composer writing about mountains and fields to a very much emotional, inside world. Nobody has pure light in them. There is a lot of darkness in every person and the only difference is how much of it you show or not. In this piece I explore as many things as I can

find beautiful in myself, and also some dark elements which I think everyone has in every soul. We have wars, oppression, occupation and that’s the dark side of each person coming out. But we have love, children, friends. We make music, write poetry and there’s a light of us coming out- that side is in every person, in every nation.

I’m trying to be very honest in my music. Also, the big difference is I’ve only just come to realise the beauty of other modern genres. I have been listening to Baroque music, jazz and other contemporary composers. This piece has become a sort of manifestation of new discoveries for me. It’s a very intense and honest piece. It has everything from pure joy to absolute despair. There are a lot of extreme techniques. I don’t write to be challenging, but at times there are only certain ways of making that intensity.

This is Not a Competition

Young Music Makers 2011 is a continuation of Radio 4’s long tradition of opening up platforms for young talent. Ms Nancy Loo, Professor David Gwilt and Mr. Jimmy Shiu were members of the adjudicating panel. Although there was an adjudicating process, YMM 2011 should not be regarded as a competition. The rewards that the candidates receive are the opportunities to perform and record. In fact, the word ‘winner’ was not heard throughout the whole process. ‘If anyone should be considered a ‘winner’, it should be all of the applicants!’ said Jimmy Shiu. ‘The applicants enjoy performing, and in turn they carefully devised their programmes, filled out an application, engaged an accompanist, took the trouble to submit an adjudication tape, prepared themselves in the top form for the live audition…their determination and dedication are admirable.’

員。「樂壇新秀2011」雖然有一個甄選的過程，但本

身並不是一個比賽。對於入圍者來說，演出及錄音成為

『樂壇新秀2011』的朋友都是優勝者。」蕭樹勝說。

「他們喜歡演出，於是小心挑選了適合自己的曲目、

填報名表、花精神準備試音光碟、為現場試音努力操

練⋯⋯他們的決心和誠意絕對值得讚賞。」

YMM 2011 is an extensive project. We have entered an exciting stage. From now until next January, we will be able to appreciate the performers’ enormous talent and the results of their years of hard work.

音樂能改變他們的人生

紀大衛�授對他們的表現同樣感到興奮：「很高興見到香港

有這麽多元的音樂專才；他們有些更以合唱和合奏的形式表

演。其中好些朋友的演出水平甚高，也可以看出他們熱衷於

發掘音樂的內涵。往後的階段一定十分精彩。」羅乃新亦很

受到感動。「試音的過程中我很雀躍，不過對於他們來講

就可能是精神的考驗。當中好些熱情的演出叫人肅然起敬，

我也深受啓發。參加者樂器的種類繁多，有些更令人意想不

到。他們的熱忱，以及高水準的演出，讓我體會到音樂能改

變他們的人生。」

跨平台的專案

多年來，第四台的「樂壇新秀」一直為年輕音樂天才提供演

出平台，「樂壇新秀2011」更首次加入�育電視和新媒體組

別聯合籌劃。演出者會在電台和電視節目中表演，並接受訪

問；而每次我們也會邀請一位有關專家來給予意見。節目播

放詳情請看另表。

票選及現場演出

我們鼓勵大家盡情投入，並在欣賞完所有節目以後參加投

票，在入圍者當中選出其中三位，於閉幕音樂會中作現場演

出。由評判團選出的一位樂壇新秀也會在同一個場合中亮相

獻技。閉幕音樂會當中有一個莊嚴的儀式，入圍者會獲頒證

書和「樂壇新秀2011」唱片。唱片裏有他們在香港電台一號

錄音室中灌錄的精彩演出。

由現在到一月份，我們可以欣賞到他們的驕人才華，以及他

們多年努力的成果，誠邀你緊貼「樂壇新秀2011」，一同見

證一眾年輕音樂家如何綻放光芒。

Music is Transforming their Lives

Professor David Gwilt was excited about the process: ‘I very much enjoyed the opportunity to listen to the breadth of talent that is now appearing in Hong Kong, and to hear young people singing in groups and playing chamber music. Once again there were some very good performances, and many which showed that the performer was truly committed to getting to grips with the music and its meaning. The coming rounds should be really interesting.’ Ms Nancy Loo was equally touched by the candidates. ‘It has been a delightful experience for me, though it must have been quite a nerve-racking challenge to these young performers. I found in some of the performances the passion was compelling and I was truly inspired. I am so happy to see the diversity of instruments. Some of them were real surprises. With the applicants’ enormous passion and high standard of playing, it’s clear that music is transforming their lives.’

A multi-platform event

The media platforms of YMM 2011 have been extended and for the first time RTHK’s ETV and New Media Section have joined in presenting this exciting event. The performers will each be featured in a radio programme and a TV programme in which they will perform and talk about their musical pathways. In each episode, an expert in their respective instruments will also be invited to say a few words about the performance.

Polling and Live Recital

Listeners and viewers are invited to follow through all programmes and join the polling to decide on which three candidates will perform live at the Final Concert on 19 January 2012. The adjudicating panel will also select one candidate to perform at the same occasion. The Final Concert is the closing ceremony of the YMM 2011 project as well. All candidates will be awarded a certificate of achievement and copies of the YMM 2011 CDs. This specially-produced CD contains tracks recorded by the candidates at RTHK Studio One. Copies will also be available to the audience and RTHK Radio 4 listeners.

After a one-and-a-half month application period and two rounds of auditions, 13 successful candidates have been chosen as the 2011 Young Music Makers! This year, we received nearly 90 applications from young musicians aged from 5 to 27. With an intake rate of only 11%, the ten selected candidates, aged 13 to 20, truly represent the best of Hong Kong’s young musicians.

The 2011 Young Music Makers in ten performing units will be showcased on RTHK Radio 4 and on ETV programmes beginning 18 September. To learn more about each of these special musicians, you can visit the project’s website at rthk.hk/special/ymm2011. An individual webpage has been set up for each musician / group, where pictures and video clips from their childhood are shared. Here is a glimpse of these young talents.

Now in its 117th year, the BBC Proms has the best soloists and ensembles from around the world and is considered the world’s largest classical music festival. In September, we bring you a selection of concerts from this world-famous programme.


6 Sep : Prom No. 30 recorded 6 August 2011 at the Royal Albert Hall The National Youth Orchestra of Great Britian

The music of Sergei Prokofiev has influenced this programme – a captivating collaboration between Vladimir Jurowski and the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain. It begins with an offering from the composer’s London-based grandson, a crossover artist who is determined to find a new audience for the classical tradition by way of minimalist grooves, dance floor beats, and remixes. DJ Switch guests with the orchestra to perform Gabriel Prokofiev’s Concerto for Turntables and Orchestra. The influence of the senior Prokofiev is clear in the intense keyboard writing of Britten’s early Piano Concerto, featuring BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist Benjamin Grosvenor. In the second half we will hear selections from Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet, which recounts the doomed love of Verona’s most romantic couple.

13 Sep : Prom Sat Matinee No. 1 recorded 13 August 2011 at Cadogan Hall Bennett, Dutilleux & Maconchy

Sir Richard Rodney Bennett, one of Britain’s most respected and versatile musicians, turned 75 this year and this Prom celebrates his creative voice and its French connections. His opulent, Debussy-inspired Dream Dancing was written for the London Sinfonietta in the mid-1980s and will be played by the ensemble’s current members, conducted by Nicholas Collon. Dutilleux is one of the living composers Bennett most admires and on this programme is his Les citations. Bennett’s friend Elizabeth Maconchy’s Romanza will also be performed. It is quietly tough-minded, though not too tough to disturb its prevailing mood of gentle soulfulness. The final work on the programme, Jazz Calendar, was developed into a Frederick Ashton ballet based on the children’s poem ‘Monday’s Child’.

20 Sep : Prom Sat Matinee No. 4 recorded 3 September at Cadogan Hall Tippett, John Tavener & Gubaidulina

The BBC Singers are joined by the Britten Sinfonia and former BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist cellist Natalie Clein in a programme that opens with the music of a master who first worked with the BBC Singers in 1944, Sir Michael Tippett, and his works The Windhover and Plebs angelica. Sir John Tavener’s Popule meus follows, a meditation on the rejection of God by modern man, with the solo cello steadfast against the temptations of the secular world as hurled out by the timpani. And, in her 80th-birthday year, Sofia Gubaidulina is represented by her atmospheric setting of St. Francis of Assisi’s The Canticle of the Sun.

27 Sep : Prom No. 74 recorded on 10 Sep at the Royal Albert Hall Last Night of the Proms

Be part of the biggest musical party of the year as Edward Gardner conducts his first ‘Last Night of the Proms’. For this grand finale there are two special guests well-known to Hong Kong audiences: Susan Bullock and Lang Lang. Since her first Proms appearance in 1995, Susan Bullock has emerged as Britain’s leading dramatic soprano. 友情從前，她是我媽媽的摯友，我叫她Auntie Barbara。之後，她又

成為了我的摯友，身份改變了，變得平起平坐，「Auntie」的稱

呼自動被刪去。我們一起經歷過不少人生的大起大跌，每一道難

關我們都彼此支持和鼓勵。一次我的眼要動手術，因為醫生技術

不好，手術失敗了。Ms. Fei 在那時候一直陪伴我、安慰我，使

我十分感動。在我媽媽中風入院的時候，她漏夜趕到醫院探望；

在我媽媽的安息禮拜中，她獻唱《祂看顧小麻雀》，歌聲猶在

耳邊。我爸爸離去時，她甚至要求我帶她到太平間，見他最後一

面。近幾年，我舉辦的「喪禮預祝」派對，Ms. Fei 每次都來作嘉

賓，更「犧牲色相」為我作了許多大膽的演出！

師生情雖然她現在再沒有替學生上課，逢星期六仍親自指導明儀合唱

團，永不言休。我也認識不少由少男少女時代加入的團員，他們

和Ms. Fei 一樣，對音樂的熱誠多年來絲毫未減。今天在各種音樂

場合總能見到Ms. Fei ，而且她更會指導不同的合唱團，為年輕人

打氣。

親情Ms. Fei 對她的父親費穆有一份深厚的敬仰之情。從小看到身為名

導演的父親和大公報社長的二叔費彝民在家中談藝術、談哲理、

談家國大事，潛移默化，讓她在腦海中早已充滿了對人情世故的

超然。我總欣賞Ms. Fei 對悲喜無常的淡然，雖然現在她兩個兒子

都在外地，但是他們每次回港都讓Ms. Fei 非常雀躍。

音樂情回想與Ms. Fei 一起體驗音樂的種種，在我的音樂路上注定跟她結

下不解緣。Ms. Fei 對音樂的熱誠、堅持和委身，其實一直是我的

前進目標。她總有無比耐心去跟不同的人合作，讓每次參與其中

的我都深受鼓舞。

社會情在音樂界，Ms. Fei 也許是擁有最多公職的一位了！其實她大可不

這麼忙碌，但是一關乎推動音樂文化，她總全身投入，主持學術

論壇、發表文章、或在政府的小組上獻策。多年來她奔走兩地，

使內地的音樂界都受她感染，各方為自己的文化燃起新的面貌。

愛情記得在最近一次明儀合唱團的音樂會，Ms. Fei 在台上致詞，她的

第一句，就是「我首先要多謝我的靚仔老公Jimmy」，台下的他

隨即柔柔地揮手致意。直至今日，我常在言談間感受到愛情是她

的第一位，無論身處何地，她都牽掛著丈夫。一路上，我看見他

倆經歷許多風雨，然而在一起時四目交投，總又會心靈相通，流

露出的愛與合一，令我既羨慕又感動。在今天人與人之間只講求

利益和得著的愛情觀，從他們身上我卻見到無私的付出和分擔。

閒情我很享受跟Ms. Fei 見見面、聊聊天，閒話家常。有時候，我忍不

住會捉弄她，以她「大姐」級的氣度，當然不會介意，到底我們

見証了彼此的成長。Ms. Fei 一直都在燃燒自己，去成就美事，

她委實太忙了，希望她能學會放下：放下工作，重拾音樂裡的悠

閒。

Some 600 musicians from 50 countries participated in the 14th International Tchaikovsky Competition, held once every four years in the Russian capital. Among them, 30 pianists, 27 violinists, 25 cellists, 20 male and female singers were chosen to enter the final round. Eventually, the piano gold medal was awarded to the 20-year-old Russian pianist Daniil Trifonov, whilst the cello

gold medal went to the Armenian cellist Narek Hakhnazaryan. No first prize was given in the violin category; instead, the silver medal was shared by Sergey Dogadin from Russia and Itamar Zorman from Israel.

Musicians from South Korea gained excellent results in this year’s competition. The female and male vocal categories were won by soprano Sun Young Seo and bass Jong Min Park. In the piano category, the silver and bronze prizes went to Yeol Eum Son and Seong Jin Cho.

This year’s jury was impressive. It was made up of top performers, as well as past Tchaikovsky winners, such as the legendary Van Cliburn, who caused a sensation when he won the piano gold medal in 1958, during the Cold War period, at the inaugural Tchaikovsky Competition. Others jurists were Vladimir Ashkenazy, Barry Douglas (both former winners), Yefim Bronfman, Anne-Sophie Mutter, Maxim Vengerov, Lynn Harrell and Plácido Domingo. Maestro Valery Gergiev was the head of the Organizing Committee.

The New York Philharmonic has signed an agreement with the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra to collaborate on a new orchestral training institute in Shanghai. This pioneering venture will be launched in 2013 at the Shanghai Symphony’s new concert hall. Every two to three months, musicians from New York will travel to Shanghai and give intensive graduate-level training to 20 to 30 students. There will also be master classes, touring exchanges, and joint commissioning of new works. Anastasia Boudanoque, who coordinates the Shanghai Symphony’s touring activities, says, ‘the Chinese system is modeled on the Russian system, which doesn’t really train people to be orchestral musicians. You’re groomed to be a soloist. But there’s no actual training to create orchestral players. The idea is to bridge the gap in training.’

4 September : Puccini’s La fanciulla del West

Giacomo Puccini (1858-1924) chose Davis Belasco’s melodrama, The Girl of the Golden West, as the subject of his seventh opera, which was composed with the American public in mind. It received its world premiere under the direction of Arturo Toscanini at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in December 1910 and it was a sensational success. The score reflects Puccini’s efforts to explore the new musical language of the 20th century, especially in harmony and orchestration.

Set against the background of the great Californian forest during the gold rush period of the 1850s, the work’s dominating strength lies in its skilful depiction of atmosphere, the character of its heroine, and dramatic intensity. Its daring modernity almost overshadows the rich romantic lyricism which is the hallmark of this most popular of all opera composers.

La fanciulla del West tells the story of an extraordinary woman who runs a bar and teaches bible classes for the miners. She falls in love with the leader of a group of bandits. The sheriff who heads the hunt for the bandits also loves her, and this tense love-triangle is the focal point of conflict in the opera.

Soprano Birgit Nilsson is the protagonist Minnie; tenor João Gibin portrays the bandit Dick Johnson; and baritone Andrea Mongelli sings the role of Jack Rance, the sheriff. Lovro von Matačić conducts the orchestra and chorus of La Scala, Milan.

In September, we offer a full month’s programme of Italian operas, starting with a unique wild West adventure followed by a representative work by each of the three great masters of the art of bel canto.

11 September : Rossini’s La donna del lago

Based on the English narrative poem by Sir Walter Scott, The Lady of the Lake, this opera composed by Gioachino Rossini (1792-1868), in fact, started a wave of Scott-mania among Italian composers, reaching a climax in Donizetti’s powerful setting of The Bride of Lammermoor (as Lucia di Lammermoor) a generation later.

The action takes place in Scotland at the time of the 1530 rebellion of the Stirling Highlanders against King James V. During the civil war, Elena is separated from her beloved Malcolm and she spends hours every day brooding on the shores of Lake Katrine, thus earning the name of Lady of the Lake. With the king’s pardon of the rebels, the lovers are finally reunited.

Premiered in Naples in 1819, the work was an immediate success. Its music is spontaneous, original, complex, and extremely demanding on the singers. Fortunately, our recording features three superb American singers with amazing technique that commands complete mastery over Rossini’s florid bel canto style. They are soprano June Anderson and tenors Chris Merritt and Rockwell Blake, performing with the Orchestra and Chorus of Theatre La Scala, Milan. Riccardo Muti is the conductor.

18 September : Donizetti’s La favorite

The protagonist of this grand opera in four acts by Gaetano Donizetti (1797-1848) is the beautiful Leonora de Guzman, mistress of King Alfonso of Castile during the 1340s. The real Leonora in history lived a rather disreputable life. In the opera, she is pictured as a pious but unfortunate woman whom fate decrees to be the ‘favourite’ of the reigning monarch, hence the title of the opera.

This melodious work was originally composed to a French text and first performed at the Paris Opéra in 1840. It was so well received that an Italian adaptation was made immediately for production throughout the composer’s native country, where it was equally successful as La favorite.

Despite an undistinguished libretto, this opera is considered by many to be one of Donizetti’s greatest achievements in tragic opera. The score has many pages of true inspiration especially in the final fourth act. The opera’s popularity was enormous in both its French and Italian versions and has never diminished. By 1900, it had been performed no fewer than 650 times at Paris Opéra alone.

Our recording of the French version features tenor Ramón Vargas in top form, mezzo-soprano Vesselina Kasarova in the title role, and baritone Anthony Michaels-Moore as King Alfonso. The Orchestra and Chorus of Radio Munich participate under the direction of Marcello Viotti.

25 September : Bellini’s Beatrice di Tenda

Vincenzo Bellini (1801-1835) is acclaimed as one of the great exponents of the bel canto style, which rose to its highest level of sophistication in the first half of the 19th century. Bellini is particularly admired for his unmatched ability to invent long mellifluous melodies, and he was held in high esteem by many great contemporaries, including Liszt and Chopin.

Beatrice di Tenda was given its premiere at the Teatro la Fenice in Venice in March 1833. Set to a libretto by Felice Romani, the story is based on a historical event concerning the unjust accusation of adultery and eventual execution of the heroine by her husband, Filippo Visconti, the Duke of Milan, in 1418.

Dame Joan Sutherland interprets the title role with deep feeling and impeccable technique. Tenor Luciano Pavarotti, in superb voice, sings the role of the young nobleman Orombello. Baritone Cornelius Opthof portrays the Duke. The London Symphony Orchestra and the Ambrosian Opera Chorus give excellent support under conductor Richard Bonynge.


香港極受尊崇的弦樂�授兼樂評家鄭延益老師於2011年7月28日安

詳地離我們而去，享年八十八歲。作為本地唯一擁有提琴�授專業

的樂評家，延益老師的故去是香港古典音樂界的巨大損失。他有隨

手拈來的百科全書式音樂知識，無論是硬技術或音樂家軼事，通過

他講的、寫的都娓娓動聽，可深入淺出，亦可深入深出，更可隨時

轉換語言，中、英、滬、粵皆精，其頭腦靈活，談笑風生，但又字

字珠璣，且全無架子，是百分之百良師益友典範。

十多年前認識延益老師時，他那高削外型，眼鏡銀髮，加上帶點上

海口音，令我想起亡父。後來始知老師也是祖籍浙江，上世紀四十

年代活躍於上海，我的父親正於同期任�於同濟大學建築系。「你

想知當時的上海嗎？遲些時候讓我慢慢告訴你吧！」他這句在電話

中給我說的話，如今只能迴盪於回憶之中。

我曾在一份1946年3月1日的上海節目單中看到延益老師的名字，那

是由上海國立音專年輕畢業生們組成的「中國交響樂團」在蘭心大

戲院的演出，延益老師擔任第二小提琴首席，而第一小提琴則由馬

思宏領軍，成員有譚抒真、司徒華城、柳和塤，大提琴部有李德倫

等精英。延益老師其時師從原維也納歌劇院首席阿德勒(Ferdinand

Adler)，同時亦在其任職的上海工部局樂團奏樂，打下堅實根底。

延益老師的樂評風格，只此一家。作為小提琴�授，他採訪或

評論眾多中外提琴家時，都是以同行甚至長輩身分來論述的，

往往可以引出受訪者非一般的回應。八、九十年代，他在香港傳

媒發表的樂評都是精闢高見，後來編進一本題為《春風風人》

的集子，2000年在上海出版，其中一篇訪問美國小提琴家史頓

(註：Isaac Stern，書中譯為斯特恩)，連消帶打，精彩至極。

延益老師鑽研小提琴幾十年，近年多次對我說：「中國鋼琴出人

才，但小提琴這門藝術實在太難了，既難學、又難精。」但我想對

於剛走完八十八年人生道路的延益老師，仍然很自豪於他的提琴藝

術人生。

謹以此文遙祝延益老師安息。

In Loving Memory of Professor Tseng Yen-yih

Hong Kong had that rarity: a prolific music critic who was also a renowned instrumental teacher - Professor Tseng Yen-yih. With his death on July 28 at age 88, that unique identity became history and a fond memory to many who knew the late master in person.

Born in Zhejiang in 1923, Tseng studied violin with former Vienna Opera concertmaster Ferdinand Adler, who lived in Shanghai in 1940s after escaping from Germany. Tseng was Professor of Strings at the Shanghai Conservatory in the 1950s and moved in Hong Kong in 1974. For 37 years, he was an influential music critic while contintuing to coach string players, professional and amateur alike.

The professor will be missed by his students and fellow music critics.

Venezuela’s Prison Orchestra

El Sistema is a successful music programme in Venezuela. It is famous for its pioneering work in teaching socially deprived children the art of music. Now, the programme has generated 120 youth orchestras and close to 60 children’s orchestras in different regions of Venezuela, with the Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela the most famous.

This programme has recently reached a more adult, but still disadvantaged side of the community – the prison. In Venezuela’s Coro prison, more than half of its inmates are learning to play an instrument, while the others are singing in choirs. The prison governor says, ‘we’ve seen a huge improvement in the inmates. From being some of the worst-behaved inmates, we now have people who are among the best in this community with a clean record of conduct for more than two years.’ A 28-year-old former gang member picked up the clarinet during his three years of service in prison in Merida. Released a year ago, he is now an apprentice in the repair and restoration of musical instruments and continues to take clarinet lessons once a week!

中最受歡迎的每日活動之一。監獄長表示，囚犯在學音樂後行

為都有明顯改善，例如一些極度滋事份子，因學了音樂，在

出獄後兩年間行為都表現良好。又如一位二十八歲少年，因參

加黑社會活動而被判入獄三年。在囚期間他學吹單簧管，獲釋

後他當了一位樂器維修學徒，工餘時還每星期繼續上單簧管課

呢！

Like many kids in the suburban desert surrounding the great New York City, I got my first exposure to music in the American marching and concert band tradition. By high school, though, I found the diet of John Philip Sousa marches and Vaclav Nelhybel melodies less than sustaining and drifted into sports. That is until one day when I turned on the radio and heard CBS’ weekly Live jazz programme. Here was music that spoke to me from the heart! After that, I spent most of my idle moments trying to play something like what I had heard on the radio - just by ear. When I entered university I naturally fell in with musicians and began to get serious about my playing. By the time my university sent me to Paris, music (be it jazz or anything else) had taken over my life. Thus began my seduction by the classical flute, but that’s another story-not for here.

My experiences in US Army Bands in Texas and Korea brought exposure to a much broader America than the one I had known before and, you guessed it, I automatically fell in with the jazzers. Jamming, rapping, and listening together was inspirational. Back in the US I found myself working on the road in Broadway musical tours. From New Orleans to Montreal, up and down the eastern seaboard with my trumpet-playing friend Louis Brunetti-looking for music to hear and, a lot of times, sit in with after our show.

For a couple of years, while polishing my musical brain at Manhattan School of Music, I used to sneak out to New Jersey on the weekends to play in a fusion group in ‘hole-the-wall’ clubs. Later, very modest success in New York’s contemporary music scene took away the time for that.

Later, when I moved East, the Hong Kong Philharmonic also tried to keep my nose to the grindstone though Saturday nights often ended sitting in at Ned Kelly’s or Café D’Amigo and 4 am journeys across the harbour in walla-wallas.

After my time at the Phil, trying to understand and learn to play Chinese Music became the focus of my attention for some time.

I was also heavily engaged in composing, much of it for Chinese instruments. At some point, I realized that my solutions/influences in writing owed more to my jazz background than to Brahms or Schoenberg.

That point also coincided with the opening of The Jazz Club in Hong Kong (creating a more solid base for jazz music) and the formation of the Han Shan Trio with bassist Simon Hui and percussionist Lung Heung Wing. Improvising freely, with many

jazz and Asian influences, we did many successful concerts together, both here, elsewhere in Asia and even in good old NYC as well as coming out with two CDs.

Since then, I have often performed more conventional jazz with the small group Jazz Straight Up here in

Hong Kong (often at the Fringe Club) and also in Shanghai and Beijing. For more than ten years I have also been a member of the Saturday Night Jazz Orchestra which seems to be Hong Kong’s most ambitious big band. We have been at the centre of the Swing for All Annual Big Band Festival, represented Hong Kong in the Shanghai International Expo and, most recently, performed in the Hong Kong Summer Jazz Festival.

With my background, the whole world of jazz is open to me. This month’s offerings include tributes to Gil Scott-Heron (vocals and poetry) and James Moody (saxophone) both of whom died recently. I hope you enjoy some of the jazz and related music (gospel, etc.) that has become important to me in my radio trip - here at RTHK Radio Four! My idea of radio is free music so you won’t hear much from me in the way of verbal embellishment but you will hear lots of great jazz. If somebody out there gets hooked on jazz - don’t say I didn’t warn ya and welcome to the club!

HKPO Season Opening Gala- Heaven & EarthTo commemorate the 100th anniversary of Mahler’s death, the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra presents Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde in their season opening concert. Protégé of Edo de Waart, the Dutch conductor Lawrence Renes leads the HKPO, together with mezzo-soprano Michelle DeYoung and tenor Stuart Skelton, bringing you this gigantic work which is built around German translations of Chinese poems. You will also hear Mozart’s Symphony No. 41, Jupiter.

港樂樂季揭幕音樂會－天上凡間

為紀念馬勒逝世一百週年，香港管弦樂團以馬勒的《大地之歌》為樂季揭開序幕。迪華特的得意門生、荷蘭藉指揮家雲尼斯會帶領香港管弦樂團，聯同女中音迪楊和男高音斯凱爾頓，送上這部融入唐詩的音樂巨著。節目還包括莫扎特的第四十一交響曲《茱比特》。

Stravinsky and J.S. BachStravinsky once arranged J.S. Bach’s Variations on ‘Vom Himmel hoch’, BWV 769, as a Chorale Variations. In this 2010 BBC Proms concert, the London Sinfonietta, led by its founder David Atherton, with the BBC Singers, brings you the original version by Bach as well as Stravinsky’s arrangement. The concert also includes Stravinsky’s Threni.

Scriabin, Shostakovich, and ProkofievIn this 2010 BBC Proms concert, the Russian conductor Vladimir Jurowski leads the London Philharmonic Orchestra in an all-Russian programme, which includes Scriabin’s Rêverie and Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 3. The young violinist Julia Fischer joins in to play Shostakovich’s Violin Concerto No. 1, a work dedicated to the late David Oistrakh.

HKCO Season Opening Concert - Sounds from a Musical Shangri-laA riveting musical dialogue between tradition and modernity, the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra’s season opening concert brings you music and dance from China’s ethnic minority groups, such as the ‘Grand Song’ of the Dong’s of Guizhou, the pipa accompanied singing by the Dong’s of Chejiang, and the Lusheng Dance of the Miao’s. It also includes works by Zhu Zhan’er, He Zhanhao, Zhao Yongshan, and Yu Chiu-for. Yu’s Images of Southern Guizhou – A Song of Joy by the Shui Ethnic Group, was

specially commissioned by HKCO.

多年來，香港電台為廣大樂迷提供多元化的藝術節目，除了第四台每

日播放的古典美樂外，電視部也轉播過不少精彩的古典音樂會。這類

型的音樂會轉播，其實第四台的同事也有參與製作。當然，我們是電

視製作的門外漢，但是在閱讀樂譜和樂曲理解方面，電視部的導演們

都很欣賞我們的協助。

其實在大部份古典音樂會節目的電視轉播中，第四台的同事也會充當

「樂譜顧問」。實際上，我們是為導演提供音樂方面的提示，這工作

一點也不容易，對我來說，比主持電台節目更難。與導演會面之前，

我們當然先要做足功課，把音樂聽得嫻熟，不僅每段每小節的樂器出

場序紀錄清楚，樂章的思緒感情也唸得胸有成竹，然後逐一與導演分

析，好讓他們極速地消化作品的神髓。這前期功夫充滿挑戰性。

臨場製作同樣有趣。在音樂會當日，我們登上外勤廣播車，與導演同

坐，面對一大堆直播器材和畫面，我真的有點衝動去按動鍵掣，號

令各單位工作，幻想自己變身成為大導演。隨著樂團團長站起來，樂

團調音聲響起，自己的思緒也歸位，準備協助導演拍攝。我喜歡這個

「樂譜顧問」的工作，它讓我對更多樂曲有深入了解，在前期工作重

溫不少作品，也學習到許多新曲。它更打開了我對電視拍攝認識之

門，啟迪了我對視覺畫面和古典美樂的聯繫，也擴展了我介紹藝術節

目的視野。其實，電視部的藝術節目不單豐富了製作人的藝術觸覺，

更重要的，是為觀眾提供優質的選擇。

最近，電視部同事有好節目推介。由上月起，逢週日早上8時在無綫

電視明珠台播出一連十集的「周日Encore」，讓觀眾重溫香港電台曾

經錄製的音樂會和舞蹈表演。演出團體包括香港電台弦樂四重奏、香

港管弦樂團、香港小交響樂團、香港歌劇院、香港舞蹈團、香港城市

室樂團等。週日早上能重溫這些演出，為我的假日增添了一份藝術氣

息，也回憶起自己工作上的小小成果。歡迎你一同收看，感受本地藝

壇的活力！

RTHK’s television division has provided high-quality television programmes of

our local arts performances. A new arts series entitled Sunday Encore can be seen

on TVB Pearl every Sunday at 8am. This series began in August 2011 and in it,

you can recapture the wonderful performances of our outstanding local artists and

ensembles. Tune in to see filmed live performances of the RTHK Quartet, the HK

Philharmonic Orchestra, the HK Sinfonietta, Opera Hong Kong, the HK Dance

Company, and the City Chamber Orchestra of HK, just to name a few. Even if

you missed the performance in the hall, you can join in the performance in your

living room!
