end farther into the gap.

4. Pries in a downward direction with fork end of tool and then forces door outward.

5. Secures door to prevent closure after entry.

Opening an Overhead Garage Door Using the

Triangle Method

Evaluator Instructions: The candidate shall be provided with a torch or power saw. Ensure candidate is wearing proper PPE:

boots, pants, hood, gloves, helmet, and eye protection.

Task: Opening an overhead garage door using the triangle method.

Performance Outcome: The candidate shall be able to make entry on an overhead garage door using the

triangle method.

Candidate Directive: “Make entry on an overhead garage door using the triangle method.”

2. Selects appropriate tool to make the cut.

3. Wearing full turnout gear and eye protection, starts saw and ensures it is working properly.

4. Is aware of environment behind door. Cuts a small inspection hole if necessary.

5. Starting at a center high point in door, makes a diagonal cut to right, down to bottom of

door.

6. From same starting point, makes second diagonal cut to left, down to bottom of door.

7. Folds door down to form large triangle.

8. Pads or protects cut edges and bottom panel to prevent injuries if necessary.

Forcing Entry Using a K Tool

Evaluator Instructions: The candidate shall be provided with a K tool and locking mechanism for a doorway. Ensure candidate is

wearing proper PPE: boots, pants, hood, gloves, helmet, and eye protection.

Task: Forcing entry using a through-the-lock technique (K tool).

Performance Outcome: The candidate shall be able to force entry on a door using a K tool.

Candidate Directive: “Force entry on a doorway using the K tool.”

1. Checks for safety hazards. Determines which type of lock is used, whether it is regular or

heavy-duty construction, and whether the cylinder has a case-hardened collar.

2. Places K tool over face of lock cylinder, notes location of keyway.

3. Uses a Halligan tool or pry tool, taps K tool down into cylinder.

4. Places adz end into slot on K tool, strikes end of Halligan tool with flat-head axe to drive K

tool farther into lock cylinder.

5. Pries up on Halligan tool to pull out lock cylinder and exposes locking mechanism.

6. Using small tools that come with K tool, turns mechanism to open lock. After lock is

released, opens door.

Breaching a Masonry Wall

1. Sizes up wall, checking for safety hazards such as electrical outlets, wall switches, and

plumbing. Inspects overall area to ensure that wall is not load bearing.

2. Selects row of masonry blocks at 61 to 91 cm (2 to 3 ft) above floor.

3. Using sledgehammer, knocks two holes each in five masonry blocks along selected row.

Each hole should pierce into hollow core of masonry blocks.

4. Repeats the process on four masonry blocks above the first row, three masonry blocks

above the second row, two masonry blocks above the third row, and one masonry block

above the fourth row. An upside-down V is created.

5. Begins knocking out remaining portion of masonry blocks by hitting blocks parallel to wall

rather than perpendicular to it.

6. Clears reinforcing wire using bolt cutters, enlarges hole as needed.

Breaching a Floor

Evaluator Instructions: The candidate shall be provided with an axe, a rotary saw or other cutting tool, and access to a wood or

poured concrete floor. Ensure candidate is wearing proper PPE: boots, pants, hood, gloves, helmet, SCBA, and face piece.

Task: Breaching a floor.

Performance Outcome: The candidate shall be able to safely breach a floor.

Candidate Directive: “Breach a floor.”

1. Sizes up floor area, checking for hazards in area to be cut.

2. Sounds floor with axe or similar tool to locate floor joists.

3. Uses appropriate cutting tool to cut one side of hole.

4. Cuts opposite side.

5. Removes any flooring, such as carpet, tile, or floorboards, that has been loosened.

6. Cuts a similar opening into subfloor, until proper size of hole is achieved.

7. Secures area around hole to prevent others working in area from falling through hole.
