COURSE INFORMATION

Microsoft Certified Application Specialist certification is part of the new Microsoft Business Certification program available for the 2007 Microsoft Office system and Windows Vista. MCAS is the successor for the Microsoft Office Specialist certification available for Office 2003. MCAS is nationally recognized certification that allows prospective employees to show employers that they have the advanced computer application skills needed to be successful in today’s office. The MCAS exam is an application simulation program. The test taker must carefully read the instructions provided to ensure that all tasks are completed quickly and accurately. MCAS is different from other IT certification tests because it does require the test taker to perform operations rather than select answers to multiple choice questions. For more information about the test, please visit the following web site. http://www.certiport.com/Portal/desktopdefault.aspx?page=common/pagelibrary/mbc_faq.html This continuing education course is designed to quickly introduce you to the new layout of the Windows Vista operating system. Because most of you are already very familiar with Windows XP, the quick pace of this course should not pose a problem. There are 12 chapters in the book we will use. We will spend approximately one hour per chapter. Because of the quick pace, you will be required to do some reading at home. Please feel free to interrupt me if you have questions. This course is to help YOU! Upon completion of this course, you will be given a comprehensive test that includes a mixed variety of questions featuring varying levels of difficulty. These questions attempt to cover almost all of the objectives for the MCAS Vista test. A few of the questions are based on ACTUAL questions from the MCAS Vista beta test I completed on 08/03/2007. You will be given three hours to complete the 70-question test. We are not able to fully simulate the actual test because it is performance based; however, you will be allowed to use a Windows Vista computer to aid you in selecting/composing the correct answers. (I found it helpful to use the computer when completing the Certiport Office 2007 MCAS pre-tests, which were multiple choice tests. Completing those pre-tests proved beneficial to me, and I am hoping this course and its comprehensive test will help you equally as well.) If you do well on this test, you should be ready to tackle the MCAS Vista exam. A course evaluation survey will be available on the last day of the course. Please take a few moments to complete it. Be honest in your responses! All answers will remain anonymous. We strive to provide the most effective instruction possible, but there is always room for improvement. We will prepare a Response Distribution to tally all test questions and analyze the number of correct and incorrect responses to improve instruction for the next course. However, your suggestions and comments provide the best feedback for us. GOOD LUCK!

Type the answer to this question in Microsoft Word. Print it to the LaserJet 4250 printer in Lab 102. Staple it to your answer sheet. 65. Create a brief tutorial explaining how to manage Windows Firewall. Use the Snipping Tool to include

screenshots.

DEMONSTRATION

Please see the test proctor in Lab 101 to complete this portion of the test. You must use the computer to show the proctor how to complete the following tasks. She will mark your answer sheet for this section. 66. Add a new, password protected user account named MCAS1. The password is Specialist2. This will be

an administrator account. Log off the current user, and log back in using the MCAS1 account. Remain logged in to the MCAS1 account for questions 67 through 70.

67. Set the screen resolution to 1024 x 768 and ensure that the monitor’s refresh rate is 75 Hertz. 68. Install an HP DeskJet 845C printer on port LPT1. It will NOT be the default printer. (Note: An acutal

PROJECTED OUTCOME

The preceding test was designed based on my experience in preparing for and taking the MCAS Vista exam. Because Vista is still a new operating system, I was unable to find a free practice test to help me prepare. At that time, Certiport did not have a Vista pre-test available for purchase either. Therefore, I tried to design this test to be as comprehensive as possible to expose students to the topics they are likely to encounter on the MCAS Vista pre-test and actual test. I would choose to let students use the computer as they complete the test because MCAS tests are performance based. Students need to be familiar with doing the tasks, not just selecting or writing answers. I used a computer to complete the multiple choice MCAS Word 2007 pre-test and was able to reinforce many of the topics I learned in the textbook. Sometimes I could not remember the exact steps for answering a question, so I compared the answer choices and stepped through the process using the computer to arrive at the correct answer. So, if students take this Vista test and confront something they do not remember, they can use the computer to figure out how to arrive at the best answer. This is what has to be done in the actual test (as that little timer keeps ticking!). I would hope that using the computer for this test would be as helpful to the students as it was to me. If I were given a chance to conduct this course and administer this test, I think that I would discover that not everyone would want a lengthy, comprehensive test. Although I value that in preparing for a certification exam, others may not. They may feel adequately prepared completing a test comprised of a more condensed sample of the topics. Upon analyzing the test questions and feedback from the students, I would adjust the test accordingly for the next course. The Response Distribution would be carefully analyzed. I would expect to see careless errors on questions 34, 40, and 43. These questions break the rules of good test item construction, but I did that for a reason. When I took the Word 2007 MCAS pre-test, I saw some multiple choice questions similar to these, and I missed them because I did not read carefully. However, I learned from my mistakes and did quite well on the actual MCAS Word exam. These “tricky” questions are to alert the students that Microsoft tests do not always exhibit the proper rules of test construction as their classroom tests do. The survey would provide useful feedback. I would hope that most of the people would respond by indicating that the objectives and instruction were organized and clear. I would expect them to report that five 3-hour sessions was an insufficient amount of time. Students would be encouraged to fill in the comments section. The survey results would be very valuable to me because of my rookie status. It is easy for me to try to present topics in a manner that worked well for me, but that may not necessarily be the best for all students. A careful analysis of the survey would be conducted and appropriate changes made for the next course.
