YOUR ITINERARY DAY 1~SATURDAY~OCTOBER 18 CINCINNATI/EN ROUTE Your journey begins this morning as you board your overnight flights to Cochin. (Meals Aloft)

DAY 2~SUNDAY~OCTOBER 19 COCHIN Late this evening arrive in one of the most fascinating cities in the world. Kochi (colonial name Cochin) is a vibrant city situated on the south-west coast of the Indian peninsula in the breathtakingly scenic and prosperous state of Kerala, hailed as 'God's Own Country'. This lovely seaside city is flanked by the Western Ghats on the east and the Arabian Sea on the west. Its proximity to the equator, the sea and the mountains provide a rich experience of a moderate equatorial climate. Upon arrival you will be met and escort to your hotel. Your home for the next two nights Vivanta Taj Malabar, is a luxurious five star hotel with a waterfront location on the

north tip of Willingdon Island in Cochin. It is one of the finest hotels, a blend of new and old. The heritage wing of the hotel was built in 1935 and has graceful Victorian interiors. The Tower wing with renovated rooms and suites is a mix of classic and contemporary styles. There are 96 comfortable guestrooms all equipped with modern amenities. After a day of exploring Cochin take a dip in the infinity pool or enjoy an invigorating spa treatment. There is also a steam room and gym. A choice of dining options includes the only authentic Thai restaurant in Kerala, an alfresco grill restaurant, and an upscale seafood restaurant. Overnight at VIVANTA TAJ MALABAR. ( No Meals) (superior charm garden view) http://www.vivantabytaj.com/Malabar-Cochin

DAY 3~MONDAY~OCTOBER 20 COCHIN Start your day with a visit to see the the Chinese fishing nets (Cheenavala) which are distinctly unique to Cochin. It is believed that traders from the court of the Chinese ruler Kublai Khan introduced these nets here. Oddly, these nets are found only in Kochi, outside China! Many fishermen earn their livelihood by fishing using these massive nets. A whole stretch of the coast along Fort Kochi and Vypeen are dotted with these nets. The tour ends in the Fort Kochi area where you can walk through the historical Dutch and Portuguese buildings. Some parts of this nearly 50-year-old Fort are still amazingly well preserved Visit the Dutch Palace which was originally built by the Portuguese. Later, in 17th century, the Dutch modified it and presented it to the Raja of Kochi. The palace has a fine collection of mural paintings depicting the scenes from the Hindu epics Mahabharatha and Ramayana. Continue with your visit to the Jewish Synagogue located

near the Dutch Palace which was built in 1568, and is magnificently decorated by Chinese tiles and Belgian chandeliers. Giant scrolls of the Old Testament can be found here. Continue on to one of the oldest churches built by Europeans in India. On his third visit to Kerala, Vasco da Gama fell ill and died in Kochi. He was buried in the St. Francis Church. Later his remains were taken back to Portugal. In spite of that, the exact place where he was buried has been marked inside the church. Another historic church was built by the Portuguese and elevated to a Cathedral by Pope Paul IV in 1558. In 1795 it fell into the hands of the British when they took over Kochi, and was demolished. About a hundred years later, Bishop Dom Gomez Ferreira commissioned a new building at the same site in 1887. The Church was proclaimed a Basilica in 1984 by Pope John Paul II.

The tour ends in the Fort Kochi area where you can walk through the historical Dutch and Portuguese buildings. Some parts of this nearly 50-year- old Fort are still amazingly well preserved. For the antique lovers a visit to Jew Street is almost a walk down the lanes of antiquity. Every piece that they sell has its own tale to narrate – of a palace or a home of the nobility, of travels across many lands and ages. Tonight you will enjoy a Kathakali dance performance. Kathakali is the classical dance-drama of Kerala, South India, which dates from the 17th century and is rooted in Hindu mythology. Kathakali is a unique combination of literature, music, painting, acting, and dance, performed only by men. A welcome dinner is specially prepared for

you at a local restaurant. Overnight at VIVANTA TAJ MALABAR. (B,D)

'Nagar,' meaning snake, and 'hole,' meaning streams. True to its name, quite a few serpentine streams fork through the rich tropical forests of the park. Nagarahole Park was set up in 1955. In 1975, its area was increased to include a greater expanse of forest reserve. The original forest was once an exclusive hunting ground for the erstwhile Maharajas of Mysore. The park has been recently renamed as Rajiv Gandhi National Park after the late Prime Minister of India.

Nagarahole's vegetation is refreshingly, including bamboo, teak, eucalyptus and cassia; which covers much of the sanctuary, providing a refuge for a wide range of animals and birds. Nagarahole has all the resident wildlife of the Nilgiri hills: Nilgiri tahr, Nilgiri langur, bison, leopard, Asian elephant, wild boar, deer, dhole (wild dog) and porcupine, besides tigers. A high canopy of trees - up to 98 feet tall in some places - harbors rare birds such as the endangered Malabar Trogon, the Malabar Pied Hornbill, the Changeable Hawk Eagle and the Crested Serpent-Eagle. Within the park, there‟s ample scope for wildlife watching. Jeeps can be taken for a drive through Nagarahole, or you can go off on elephant safari - the best way, in fact, to go deep into the jungle. hot and sweaty. The summer, on the other hand, though it may be pretty hot, is a great time to see wildlife, including the tiger. The dry, hot season (March-May) is the time when the animals gather at the lake, allowing for great wildlife viewing. The monsoons (June-September) are best avoided, as the entire road network gets washed out, and leeches and dense undergrowth proliferate in the forest.

Nagarahole is one of the best National Parks in India for variety in viewing, it offers over 250 species of birds including the Green Imperial Pigeon, Blue-faced and Sirkeer Malkoha and several woodpecker species such as the Heart spotted, Streak throated and Rufous. Malabar Parakeet and the Vernal Hanging Parrot along with several owls such as the Mottled Wood,

DAYS 18/19~TUESDAY/WEDNESDAY~NOVEMBER 4/5 PUSHKAR/JAIPUR

Your drive now takes you to Jaipur, the administrative and commercial capital of what was known as Rajputana. Begun in 1727 and completed in just eight years, Jaipur was the first city in India to enjoy rigorous town planning according to the principles laid down in "Shilpa Shastra," an ancient Indian article on architecture. The city is protected by high walls, with wide, straight avenues that divide it into nine sectors (apparently reflecting the nine divisions of the universe, resembling the Indian horoscope), each named after the commodity and caste who lived and practiced their specific skills here – the order and space was at the time a total revolution in Indian cities. Jaipur is known as the Pink City, a rather idealized description of the terra-cotta-colored lime plaster that

coats the old part of the city's walls, buildings, and temples. The reasons for painting the town pink are unknown, but various theories have been tossed about, from using pink to cut down glare, to the city‟s founder Jai Singh II's apparent devotion to Lord Shiva (whose favorite color is reputedly terra cotta). Others believe Singh wanted to imitate the color of the sandstone used in the forts and palaces of his Mughal emperor-friends. The most popular reason is that pink is the traditional color of hospitality, and the city was freshly painted and paved with pink gravel to warmly welcome Edward VII for his visit here in 1876. The city is painted pink once every 10 years by the Municipal Corporation, and in 2000 the painting was timed for a state visit, this time by former U.S. president Bill Clinton.

The history and times of Jaipur are deeply entwined with the stories of royal princes and princesses, with grand Mughals and later with visiting dignitaries from the British Royal family or 20th century royalty like the U.S. Presidential families. Modern Jaipur plays host to all of them and to many thousands who come here enchanted by all that the city has to offer.

Jaipur is undoubtedly a city of kings and queens and its distinctive architecture clearly emphasizes this. Even so it has a timeless appeal, since many of the traditional crafts patronized by the 18th century rulers are still thriving. So, you have streets that are famous for jewelry, tie-and-dye, pottery, „meenakari‟, leatherwork and stone carvings. During your days here discover all this wonderful history and culture as you explore the various palaces, observatories, forts and local markets. Visit one of the major attractions at Jaipur, the Amber fort. The breathtakingly beautiful complex of the Amber Fort comprises of palaces, halls, pavilions, gardens and temples. It is astounding that it took more than two centuries for its construction. The elegance exuded by the fort is simply awesome. You may either walk or ride an elephant to unfold the magic of the fort. The ride of the majestic animal is an experience in itself.

On your way back stop at the Hawa Mahal or the Palace of Winds located at the main street of the old city, the five-story building is a pink splendor with carved trelliswork. The structure meant to be a window for the royal ladies to view the activities on the street including the daily life and the processions. You will relish each moment of the royal retreat. Another landmark worth visiting is the former residence of the royal family, the City palace. The charming palace reveals a combination of the Rajasthan and Mughal styles of architecture. Your home for the next two nights is Hotel Rajputana Sheraton one of the best hotels in the Pink City. One can find aristocracy and the nobility of royal Rajasthan in Rajputana Sheraton. Built on 7-acres of land with lush green environment the hotel offers beautiful views of the city. The Sheraton's 216 rooms, exterior design and gardens all reflect the spirit of Rajasthan and its royalty. In addition, the Sheraton is well equipped to offer guests the best in modern facilities and services. The four onsite restaurants serve international and exotic cuisine for you to feast on. Offering beautiful views of the swimming pool, the Sheeshmahal Bar is an ideal place to unwind with a fine drink. Overnights at the ITC RAJPUTANA. (B Daily) www.itchotels.com

DAY 20~THURSDAY~NOVEMBER 6 JAIPUR/AGRA After a leisurely breakfast drive to Agra. En route, you‟ll visit the magnificent ghost city of Fatehpur Sikri, the short-lived capitol of the Mughal Empire between 1571 and 1585 during the reign of Emperor Akbar. Although brilliant and unusual from an architectural point of view, Akbar‟s city was erected in an area that suffered from water shortages and it was abandoned shortly after Akbar‟s death. The well-preserved palace and still used mosque are the main points of interest but you can wander around the ruins that are scattered behind the mosque.

Gloriously stretching over 35 acres of vibrant courtyards and situated in the heart of the city, the Mughal Sheraton offers 285 luxuriously furnished rooms and suites. All guest rooms are decorated with a touch of Old World splendor, and many offer a view of the Taj Mahal, located just over a mile away. You can dine in any of the on-site restaurants, serving authentic flavors of the Northwest Frontier, American or gourmet dishes. Overnight at the ITC MUGHAL HOTEL. Chamber of Emperor (B) http://www.itchotels.in

DAY 20~FRIDAY~NOVEMBER 7 AGRA Perhaps no other historical monument has evoked as much

awareness and admiration from tourists and travelers alike as the magnificent Taj Mahal, considered the ultimate requiem of love from a great Mughal Emperor to his beloved wife. So overwhelming is the exquisite beauty and presence of this marble mausoleum that centuries later today, even the very land where it has been located has been immortalized as the City of the Taj. Although the heritage of Agra is linked with the Mughal Dynasty, numerous other rulers also contributed to the rich past of this city. Modern Agra was founded by Sikandar Lodhi (Lodhi Dynasty) in the 16th century. Babur (founder of the Mughal Dynasty) also stayed for some time in Agra and introduced the concept of square, Persian-styled gardens here. Emperor Akbar, his grandson, built the Agra Fort and the city of Fatehpur Sikri in gratitude for an heir after his wife bore him a son. Agra came to its own when Shahjahan ascended to the throne of the Empire. He marked the zenith of Mughal architecture when he built the Taj Mahal in memory of his beloved wife, whom he affectionately named Mumtaz Mahal (Jewel of the Palace). In his later years, Shahjahan shifted his capital to the new city of Shahjahanabad in Delhi and ruled from there. Shahjahan was dethroned in 1658 by his son, Aurangzeb, who imprisoned him in the Agra Fort. Aurangzeb shifted the capital back to Agra until his death. After the death of Aurangzeb, the Mughal Empire would not again touch its peak and many regional kingdoms emerged. The post-Mughal era of Agra saw the rule of the Jats, Marathas, and finally the British, who took over the city. Spend the day discovering this imposing city and its fabled past as you explore the monuments, the majesty of the buildings and the exquisite arts and crafts… all cherished as priceless legacies of a nostalgic past. Overnight at the ITC MUGHAL. (B)

DAY 21~SATURDAY~NOVEMBER 8 AGRA/DELHI Early this morning, enjoy a sunrise visit to Taj Mahal. This visit, unlike the day before, will allow you a glimpse of this monument with the changing backdrop of the morning sky. Watch the monument go from a dull gray to a shimmering white during your visit. Return to hotel for breakfast. And then drive to Delhi. Overnight at the GRAND HOTEL NEW DELHI. (B)

DAY 22~SUNDAY~NOVEMBER 9 DELHI Today, venture off to Old Delhi for a visit to Jama Masjid, India‟s largest mosque, with a courtyard capable of holding 25,000 devotees. Built in 1644, it was the last in the series of architectural indulgences of Shah Jahan, the Mughal emperor who also built the Taj Mahal and the Red Fort. The highly decorative mosque has three great gateways, four towers and two 135-ft high minarets constructed of strips of red sandstone and white marble. Visitors should dress respectfully (no shorts, mini-skirts, tank tops etc). Next, visit the Red Fort, once the most opulent fort and palace of the Mughal Empire. The main entrance to the fort is the Lahore Gate, named so for facing towards Lahore in Pakistan. Delhi Gate is similar to Lahore but grander in design and the gate was used by the emperor every Friday for ceremonial processions to the Jama Masjid. Upon entering through the Lahore Gate, you reach the Covered Bazaar also known as Chandni Chowk, one of the first covered bazaars of the 17th century where items sold included silks, jewelry, gems, silverware and other artistic objects. Today the bazaar carries various souvenirs and food items. An extensive tour through New Delhi will also delight. Visit Humayun‟s Tomb, built in the mid-16th century by the senior wife of the second Mughal emperor – the first significant example of Mughal architecture in India, and one of the most beautiful buildings in the city. The elements of its design are echoed in the later Taj Mahal. It comprises a squat building with high arched entrances topped by a bulbous dome and surrounded by formal gardens. Found at the gardens are the red-and-white sandstone and black-and-yellow marble tomb of Humayun's wife and, somewhat surprisingly, the tomb of Humayun's barber. Qutub Minar is another interesting visit, whose superb buildings date from the onset of Islamic rule in India. The Qutub Minar itself is a soaring 240-ft high tower of victory that was started in 1193, immediately after the defeat of the last Hindu kingdom in Delhi. At its base is Quwwat-ul-Islam Masjid (Might of Islam Mosque), India's first. An inscription over the mosque's eastern gate provocatively informs that it was built with material obtained from demolishing 27 “idolatrous” (read Hindu) temples. A 23-ft high iron pillar stands in the courtyard of the mosque and it's said that if you can encircle it with your hands while standing with your back to it, your wish will be unfulfilled; however, the pillar is now protected by a fence. Continue on your drive along the ceremonial avenue, Rajpath, past the imposing India Gate, Parliament House and the President‟s residence before arriving back at your hotel. Later this evening you will be transferred to the airport for your return flights home. (B, Meals Aloft)

THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT INDIA Participants

Must be able to climb in and out of vehicles unassisted. They should also be able to tolerate riding on uneven, bumpy dirt roads for long periods of time (6-9 hours maximum), as well as some off-road experiences when opportunities allow.

Participants should be able to stand and/or walk moderate distances at an easy pace for up to a few hours at a time when visiting villages, towns, temples or other sites. Some, if not most, of this walking may be on uneven ground or uphill.

Driving in India is chaotic and unlike the orderly driving experienced in the United States. Your drivers are experts in navigating the roads with all the conditions that are prevalent and travelers should feel safe in the knowledge that your driver‟s number one priority is to get you to your destination safely and as efficiently as possible.

General

True adventure in travel can sometimes be accompanied by unexpected changes in conditions, itineraries and occasionally your accommodations.

Participants should travel with a spirit of adventure and flexibility. Remember to pack your patience and sense of humor! Be willing to look past self-imposed ideals of Western amenities and do not compare these new experiences with your life back home. Travel often includes visiting destinations with modest infrastructures and a bending definition of comfort. That being said some locations are nestled in absolute luxury where pampering is the norm.

Participants should generally be in good health and prepared to travel in locations without medical facilities. Air Schedules Choosing the best possible air arrangements for our travelers is always a challenge. We work with many airlines that offer the best level of service, routings and value for our programs. While there may indeed be more direct routings available with another airline, the cost of these flights may not be within the budget that allows us to give you the best value possible. If you prefer to purchase your own international air, please feel free to choose the “land only” rate for this program. The start city for this program is Cochin and the end city is Bangalore, India. Extension returns for Delhi. Upon registration, you must provide your full legal name as it appears on your passport. In the event an airline ticket is issued with incorrect information you have provided, you will be responsible for charges associated with reissuing the ticket.

TRANSPORTATION

OPTIONAL AIR TRANSPORTATION: Roundtrip, economy-class flights via AIR INDIA and/or other IATAN carriers are between NEW YORK, and the destination city noted in the itinerary. Rates are based on special promotional fares; cancellation fees apply once tickets are issued. Departures from other cities in the USA are possible at additional cost; inquire at the time of reservation. Please note that these promotional fares are subject to 10 passengers traveling together on the same airline routing and itinerary. If this minimum is not met, the special group rates are not applicable and it might become necessary to issue instant purchase tickets earlier than when final payment is due in order to take advantage of airfares that are similar to the group rates. Should this occur, you will be contacted with the details. AIRLINE SEATING: For AIR INDIA, we request seats together for the group. All planes are non-smoking. We can request a seating preference on your behalf, however requested seats cannot be guaranteed. Requests should be made in writing no later than 60 days prior to departure. Bulkhead and/or emergency row seats can only be requested at airport check-in on the day of departure. Boarding passes will only be issued at the airport on the day of departure. You may inquire about seat changes during check in, based on availability and is at the sole discretion of airport staff. FREQUENT FLYER MILEAGE: As mentioned, we work primarily with AIR INDIA. For a list of the airline‟s partners, visit www.flyingreturns.co.in/html/rd_partner_flights.php‎. You may obtain frequent flyer mileage on any of these carriers. Present your frequent flyer card for all flight check-ins and keep the boarding passes until you receive a statement with the mileage credit

TRANSFERS: Roundtrip airport transfers are included in the tour for guests arriving on group flights. If travelers make their own air arrangements, they will be subject to extra transfer fees.

All rates are based on double occupancy. Most rooms are twin-bedded, but king-size beds are occasionally available and should be requested in advance. Accommodations listed in this itinerary are correct at time of writing, but on rare occasions may be substituted for a different property of comparable quality. MEALS: All meals as specified in the itinerary. Please notify us if you have special dietary needs or requests, and we will do our best to accommodate. INOCULATIONS: When it comes to vaccination and disease prevention, we suggest that travelers first review information provided by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (www.cdc.gov/travel) and then review those details with their personal physicians. WATER: It is always advisable to drink bottled and/or filtered water when traveling overseas. Safe drinking water will be provided to travelers free of charge in the vehicles and during meals.

Schedules, accommodations and prices are accurate at the time of writing. They are subject to change.

BAGGAGE: On average, international flights from the USA allow two pieces of checked luggage, each not exceeding 50 pounds; however we always recommend that you check your airline‟s policy just before departure, as luggage limitations are always subject to change. Despite this weight allowance, we always suggest guests travel light. Also soft-sided duffel bags are ideal for this tour, as they stow best in vehicles and airplanes with limited space.
