Some Quotes:
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.
Faith is taking the first step even when you don't see the whole staircase.
Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?
Relationships
I have told you the story before about the
mother who is walking along the beach with
her three-year-old son, who is running along
playing in the water’s edge. Suddenly a wave
comes surging in and sweeps the little boy
away. The mother cries out to God, “O Lord
how could you let this happen! I go to church
every Sunday, I tithe regularly and I have
even taught Sunday school! Lord, I beg you
give me back my son!”
Suddenly another wave comes ashore and the
son is standing next to his mother. She looks
up to heaven and cries out, “He had a hat!”
It is Monday afternoon after the Louisville
Orchestra concert that was in our Sanctuary
on Friday, the second of December. A man
called to say that he left his hat at the concert
and wondered if we could check for it. Tim,
our facilities coordinator, looked for it after
the concert. Anne Hughes looked for it as
well. Today the man stopped by and I went in
and helped him look one more time. I had the
urge to scream, “Lord, he had a hat!”
What in the world made this hat so special?
He could have bought another one with the
gas he expended driving back and forth over
here. It turns out that his wife, who died over
10 years ago, gave him that hat over 50 years
ago. He said, “It was kind of a sporty hat that
hated it. Then I started wearing it and
pretty soon I never left home without it. I
came to really love that hat.”
It occurs to me that sometimes we fall in
love with something and we are guilty of
idolatry. We might worship our house, or
our car, or perhaps our extreme wealth.
But sometimes we fall in love with
something because the thing itself reminds
us of a relationship. I love my wedding
band because it represents the relationship
I have with my wife. I loved the special
music the choir sang at Christmas because
it represented the relationship I have with
my God.
If the “what” that we love is not connected
to a “who” that we love, then we might just
have a disconnect. Do not start 2017 with a
disconnect.
John

Preschool
Harvey Browne Preschool
December was a magical time at the Harvey Browne Preschool. Santa made not one, but
two visits to the preschool, raising spirits and anticipation for the upcoming holidays. The
children celebrated Jesus’ birthday in their class parties on December 15th and 16th and
parents and congregation members thoroughly enjoyed the retelling of the Christmas story
in our kindergarteners’ own words. There is nothing quite like the sound of beautiful
Christmas carols being sung by children to fill you with joy and true Christmas spirit.
In the giving spirit of the season the children donated toys again this year to the Home of
the Innocents and will begin Souper Bowl collections for St. MAM soon.
Enrollment for the 2017-2018 school year continues until January 13, with first priority
going to HBPres members. We will have an open house on Wednesday, January 11 at 9:15
a.m. for parents wishing to learn more about our NAEYC accredited program and our highly
qualified and dedicated teachers and staff. If you have any questions, please contact
Barbara Bailey or Anne Hughes at 502-895-2577 or visit the preschool website at
www.harveybrownepreschool.org.
The Louisville Children’s Mobile Museum will be at the preschool on January 23 and 24
providing a hands-on “Louisville” learning experience with a focus on discovery and
imagination. We will also have vision screening by Kids Sight with the Lions Foundation in
late January for those that sign up.
Speaking of seeing, the preschool will be cooking the Wednesday Night Dinner on January
25 and we hope to see everyone there.
In Christ,
The Preschool Board

enjoy the discussion of this book about a boy who is really talented with machines from
Germany, and a blind girl from a very loving family in France. WWII puts each of them in

Hospitality Night Update and Remembering Two of Our
Favorite Hostesses
Our Hospitality Night program was in full swing during the month of December. Fifty people
enjoyed dining in homes and getting better acquainted with other members of HBPres. We
appreciate our hosts, Carolyn and Tom Diener, Kitty and Jim Boswell, Edith and Skip Light,
Janie and John Roper, Nancy and Bill Williamson, and my husband, Kelly Burke. This fall we
experimented with a Sunday brunch option that was also well attended.
I would be remiss if I did not pause to remember two of our favorite hostesses. Marlene
Mitchell and Edith “Edie” Sutton were long-time members of “Tables of Eight,” which later
became known as “Hospitality Night.”
You can meet our wonderful hosts and other HBPres members at the next round of Hospitality
Night dinners. Look for more information and a sign-up in a church service bulletin.
