Park West Athletics Complex

UTSA broke ground at the Park West Athletics Complex on April 10, 2012 and it officially

opened its new 1,000-seat track & field and soccer facilities on Aug. 16, 2013. The complex

is a joint-use project made possible through the 2003 Bexar County and 2007 City of San

Antonio bond elections and the 2008 Bexar County Venue Tax election. The facility is located on Kyle

Seale Parkway just inside Loop 1604, and when completed, it also will house facilities for baseball,

softball and tennis, as well as football practice fields.

2336 Conference Championships

Director of track & field/Cross Country aaron fox

Aaron Fox is in his eighth season as UTSA’s director of track & field and cross country. An integral part of Roadrunners track & field for more than 15 years, Fox has been in charge of the men since 2003

and he added the women to his list of responsibilities following the merging of the two programs in July 2008. His career in the Alamo City began as an assistant for both the men and women in 2000.

Last season saw the UTSA men successfully defend their Conference USA Outdoor Championship on the strength of four individual titles and Fox was named the circuit’s Coach of the Year for the second year in a row. Keyunta Hayes swept both hurdles events for the second consecutive campaign, Ty Anderson won the high jump and Jared Tyler captured gold in the dis-cus. It marked the program’s 10 straight campaign with either an indoor or outdoor crown. Hayes and Jurmarcus Shelvin went on to earn honorable mention All-America accolades in the 400-meter hurdles.

The outdoor achievements followed yet another successful indoor season. The Roadrun-ners finished second at the league’s indoor meet and were led by Andrew Akens, who suc-cessfully defended his shot put crown, and Hayes, who raced to victory in the 60m hurdles. Dionte Robinson was UTSA’s leading scorer in his inaugural conference championship meet and he was tabbed C-USA Freshman of the Meet.

Meanwhile, the women were led by Whitney Flannel, who matched UTSA’s 19-year-old record in the high jump and became the program’s first All-American in eight years follow-ing her 11th-place finish at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. That came on the heels of a C-USA title in her specialty event and she was joined by Stephanie Wangui’s victory in the 800m. The indoor campaign saw Wangui collect a pair of gold medals at the confer-ence meet, first in the 800m and later as a member of the distance medley relay that also featured Grace Kohler, Shantel Swift and Emily Perez.

The accolades also carried over to the classroom, as five Roadrunners earned C-USA Academic Medals (3.75 GPA) and a total of 23 were named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll. Lindsey Pew landed on the league’s all-academic squad for the second consecutive year and Victor Perez earned All-Academic honors from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

The inaugural campaign in C-USA got off to a great start in 2013-14, as the women’s cross country team won UTSA’s first-ever C-USA Championship in November. Led by Nina Her-rera’s fourth-place finish, the Roadrunners captured the program’s first league crown since 1996 and sixth overall in school history (1991-93, ‘95-96 Southland Conference). Perez went on to post the best individual finish by a Roadrunner in 17 years and her performance helped lead UTSA to fifth place at the 2013 NCAA South Central Regional.

The success carried over to the track & field seasons, as the men captured the C-USA Out-door Championship and the women finished second at the league’s indoor meet. All told, UTSA athletes earned three All-America certifcates (Akens/Richard Garrett Jr./Hayes), won eight conference individual/relay crowns (five outdoor/three indoor) and set a total of 10 program records (five indoor/five outdoor). Garrett Jr. also was tabbed the circuit’s out-door Field Athlete of the Year and Field Performer of the Meet, while Fox was named the league’s Coach of the Year.

The honors were not limited to the track, as seven Roadrunners earned C-USA Academic Medals (3.75 GPA) and 35 student-athletes were named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll. Samantha Fish earned C-USA All-Academic laurels in both cross country and track & field, while Nate Brunette and Pew were track & field honorees.

Fox led UTSA’s successful transition into the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) in 2013 following unprecedented success in the program’s former home, the Southland Confer-ence.

The Roadrunners men captured the WAC Indoor Championship in February behind a school-record-tying six individual/relay titles. The victory was UTSA’s eighth consecutive

indoor league title and Fox was named WAC Coach of the Year (his eighth straight indoor coaching award). Garrett Jr. was tabbed the conference’s Outstanding Field Performer and he went on to match the program’s high-est national indoor finish with his fourth-place performance in the shot put. Outdoors, Joshua Smith advanced to the NCAA Championships semi-finals in the 400m hurdles and his 13th-place performance earned him second-team All-America accolades.

Meanwhile, the women just missed out on their first indoor league crown in 19 years when they finished second to I-35 rival Texas State by just six points. That came on the heels of a runner-up effort at the WAC Cross Country Championships, which featured the closest race in meet history (Idaho won by only three points).

All told, UTSA won a total of 12 conference gold medals (eight indoor/four outdoor) in their first and only season in the circuit and Jonas Gutierrez also earned WAC Men’s Outdoor Freshman of the Year honors.

Fox led the men to a league-record seven consecutive Southland Indoor Championships and he was named the league’s Coach of the Year from 2006-12 (only coach in conference history to earn seven straight awards). The Roadrunners also won three outdoor titles in their final five years in the circuit (2008, ‘10 & ‘12) and he picked up Coach of the Year acco-lades following each of those indoor/outdoor sweeps. Fox’s other honors include the 2008 and ‘11 U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) South Central Region Indoor Coach of the Year and he also represented Team USA as an assis-tant coach at the 2010 Thorpe Cup (annual United States/Germany decathlon competition).

A former All-America decathlete at the University of Texas, he already has tutored sev-eral high-profile athletes at UTSA, including five-time All-American Garrett Jr., four-time All-American Teddy Williams, three-time All-Americans Hayes and Justin Youngblood, two-time All-Americans Keith Benford, Devon Bond and Larry Brooks, All-Americans Akens, Brandon Buteaux, Shelvin, Smith, Tyler Williamson, Flannel and Rhonda Ray, four-time Southland Champion Will Vese and 2008 Southland Cross Country, six-time indoor and three-time outdoor league champion Dana Mecke.

Under his watchful eye, Roadrunners student-athletes have broken or tied eight confer-ence records and another 78 school marks. They also have won 135 league titles and earned 28 All-America certificates.

There has been just as much success in the classroom, as multi-event performer Bryan Wolfe swept Southland Student-Athlete of the Year honors in 2005 and ’06 and he also was a third-team ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-American as a senior. Mean-while, Mecke was a four-time Southland Student-Athlete of the Year selection (2008 cross country/’09-10 indoor/’10 outdoor) in addition to earning third-team Academic All-America accolades in 2010.

During the past eight years, more than 100 individuals have qualified for NCAA Champion-ship Preliminary Round competition and 27 have advanced to the national meets.

In a tight team race that came down to the final event, the Flagstaff, Ariz., native led UTSA to its first-ever Southland Indoor Championship in 2006 behind individual championships from Buteaux (heptathlon) and Mthobisi Baloyi (800m). His Roadrunners successfully de-fended that title a year later on the strength of gold medals by Brooks (800m), Gaston Griffin (400m) and Vese (60m hurdles) and UTSA completed the three-peat in 2008 when a league-record six athletes — Steven Brown (200m), Luke Johnson (shot put), P.J. Mc-Gowen (high jump), Vese (60m hurdles), Williams (60m) and Tommy Wolfe (heptathlon) — came back to the Alamo City with individual crowns.

The Roadrunners picked up their fourth consecutive title in February 2009 when Vese (60m hurdles), Johnathan Whittaker (high jump), Williams (60m/200m) and Tommy Wolfe (heptathlon) finished first in their respective events. Williams collected Southland Athlete of the Year and Outstanding Track Performer honors after becoming the first athlete in

Director of track & field/Cross Country aaron foxfive years to sweep the short sprints at the conference meet. He went on to post the third-fastest preliminary heat time, a league record 6.59, at the NCAA Indoor Championships and picked up his second All-America certificate with his eighth-place showing. He went on to post the world’s fastest 100m time in any condition, 9.90, at the UTEP Invitational in April, which stood for two-and-a-half months. Meanwhile, Vese also picked up his third title in a row in the 60m hurdles and Tommy Wolfe won his third straight conference multi-events championship.

Crown number five came the following season when the Birds received winning perfor-mances from Williams (60m/200m), Keith Benford (high jump), Bond (triple jump) and the distance medley relay team of Brandon Chiuminetta, Canel Cole, Bryan Ugochukwu and Albert Cardenas. Williams was tabbed the league’s Athlete of the Year and Outstanding Track Performer for the second season in a row, while Benford and Bond were named Freshman and Newcomer of the Year, respectively.

UTSA matched Lamar’s 26-year-old Southland record in 2011 with its sixth straight title and that came on the strength of the Roadrunners equaling their conference record with a half dozen gold medals — Benford (high jump), Bond (triple jump), Cardenas (mile), Garrett Jr. (shot put), Taylor Reed (pole vault) and Williamson (long jump). That helped the Birds score 153 points, which was the second-highest total in the meet’s 32-year history. Garrett Jr. was named the Outstanding Field Performer and he went on to earn second-team All-America honors at the NCAA Indoor.

The unprecedented seventh championship in a row came a year later with another half dozen individual crowns, as Benford (high jump), Garrett Jr. (shot put), Hayes (60m hur-dles), Chrisshun Jamerson (800m), Steinert (weight throw) and Williamson (long jump) all were victorious. Benford went on to earn second-team All-America honors with his 14th-place finish at the national indoor championships.

UTSA ended a streak of back-to-back second-place finishes at the conference’s outdoor meet in 2008, giving the program its first-ever indoor/outdoor sweep in school history. First-place efforts by Williams in the 100m and 200m, Vese in the 110m hurdles, Tommy Wolfe in the decathlon and the 400-meter relay team vaulted the Roadrunners to their second Southland Outdoor Championship in school annals. Following that meet, the team entered the USTFCCA Top 25 Poll, which was the first national ranking by any program in UTSA Athletics history.

Williams earned All-America honors in the 100m following his seventh-place performance at the 2008 NCAA Outdoor Championships and he went on to advance to the quarterfinals at the United States Olympic Trials. The fifth All-American in school history had a year to remember, as he set a total of four school records — 60m (6.66), 100m (10.16), 200m (20.60) and 400m relay (39.84) in addition to winning the NCAA Midwest Regional 100m title, the Southland Outdoor 100m, 200m and 400m relay crowns and the Southland Indoor 60m gold medal. Williams, who led 1-2-3 finishes in both short sprints at the conference’s outdoor meet, was named the league’s Outstanding Outdoor Track Performer. He also set a new conference record in the 60m dash in January and competed at the NCAA Indoor Championships two months later. The Tyler native capped his season by running on the 400m relay team that ran the world’s fastest time (38.39) at the NACAC Under-23 Champi-onships. Meanwhile, Brown collected All-Midwest Region honors in the 100m, was named the Southland Indoor Athlete of the Year and was the high-point scorer at both league meets and Tommy Wolfe became the first athlete to sweep both multi-event competitions in league history.

The program’s second sweep in three years came in 2010 when Williams (100m), Bond (high & triple jumps) and Williamson (long jump) won individual titles at the Southland Outdoor. The Birds scored a then-school-record 148 points en route to their seventh title under Fox’s tutelage and Williams recorded the nation’s top 100m time (10.03w) in his gold-medal performance. Bond went on to post the third-best national finish in program history with his fifth-place effort in the triple jump, while Williams became UTSA’s first-ever four-time All-American with his ninth-place showing in the 100m. He went on to sign a free agent contract with the Dallas Cowboys in July 2010, becoming the first UTSA athlete to play in the National Football League.

Three Roadrunners — Benford (high jump), Bond (triple jump) and Hayes (400m hurdles) — won conference crowns at the 2011 Southland Outdoor, as UTSA finished second to Stephen F. Austin by 16 points. Hayes was tabbed the conference’s Freshman of the Year, a first in program history, after accounting for 16.75 points, which was the highest total among league frosh. Ten athletes qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Preliminary Rounds and a school-record three — Benford (high jump/honorable mention), Bond (triple jump/second team) and Garrett Jr. (shot put/second team) — went on to earn All-America honors.

UTSA left the league in style in May 2012 with its third indoor/outdoor sweep in the last five years. Hayes swept both hurdles events on the final day of the meet, while Garrett Jr. won the shot put for the program’s first-ever outdoor throws gold medal in its 21-year his-tory in the conference. Those two and Williamson went on to earn All-America accolades at the national meet. Hayes (400m hurdles) posted the best finish of the three, fourth, and that was the second-highest outdoor finish in school annals. He went on to advance to the semifinals of the U.S. Olympic Trials.

2536 Conference Championships

Director of track & field/Cross Country aaron foxOn the women’s side, Fox immediately turned the Roadrunners into Southland contenders in just four seasons.

UTSA nearly won its first Southland Outdoor Championship since 1997 in its last campaign in the league and it ended up posting its best finish, second, in 15 years. The Roadrunners won a total six individual/relay titles — Katie Bragg (hammer), Jhorden Hunter (100m), Eb-oni Johnson (triple jump), Zaquita McClanahan (shot put), Mecke (1,500m) and the 400m relay quartet of Shahira Ehiemua, Chiugo Okonkwo, Krystal Wynn and Hunter. Meanwhile, Ehiemua was tabbed Southland Freshman of the Year. All that came on the heels of a fourth-place effort at the conference’s indoor meet where Chenale Smith (high jump) and the distance medley relay of Isabel Balbontin, Grace Williamson, Nina Herrera and Alyssa Diaz captured gold medals.

The 2011 campaign saw Aimee Jonas win the program’s seventh Southland pentathlon title, which helped lead UTSA to a third-place finish. Meanwhile, Bragg picked up the school’s first-ever hammer crown during the outdoor season.

Mecke helped lead the program to a five-place improvement at the 2010 Southland Out-door and she was named the league’s Athlete of the Year after winning the 800m and 1,500m titles. Her middle distance sweep was the first in the conference in seven years. Jessica Jones was the Birds’ other champion, as she won her third consecutive 100m hurdles crown, joining former UTSA All-American Ryanne Dupree as the circuit’s only three-time winners in the event.

UTSA posted its highest indoor finish, third, in a half dozen years in February 2010 on the strength of a school-record-tying six individual/relay crowns. Jones successfully defended her 60m hurdles title, Mecke swept the 800m and mile for the second straight year, Pernilla Savestrand and Kayla Pratt were victorious in the 3k and 5k, respectively, and the DMR collected gold for the second year in a row. Meanwhile, Savestrand was tabbed the circuit’s Newcomer of the Year after earning the same award during the cross country campaign.

In his first season, Mecke became the fourth female in school history and first in a dozen years to win the Southland Cross Country Championship. She won her first seven races of the season before finishing the campaign with a 23rd-place showing at the NCAA South Central Regional, which was the highest finish by a Roadrunner in at least 12 years. The league’s Student-Athlete of the Year also was a five-time Southland Athlete of the Week honoree. Mecke went on to win Southland Indoor Championships in the 800 meters and mile in addition to running the anchor leg on UTSA’s first-place distance medley relay squad and she was tabbed the meet’s Outstanding Track Performer and circuit’s Student-Athlete of Year. Meanwhile, Jones swept the circuit’s hurdles crowns, including successfully defending her 100m hurdles title, to become the first female in school history to do so and she went on to compete at the NCAA Midwest Regional. Pratt later raced to All-America honors in the 5k at the USA Junior Championships.

Brooks, the school record-holder in the indoor and outdoor 800 meters, completed a rare double for the Roadrunners in 2007, becoming just the second male athlete in school history to earn All-America accolades at both the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Champion-ships in the same season, matching Youngblood’s feat from 2004 (heptathlon/decathlon). Additionally, Buteaux advanced to the 2005 NCAA Indoor Championships and became the program’s third All-American with a seventh-place finish, breaking Youngblood’s school record with 5,519 points.

In 2004, Youngblood won the Southland Indoor heptathlon title en route to being named the league’s Indoor Men’s Athlete of the Year and earning All-America honors with a seventh-place finish at the NCAA Championships. He then picked up his third All-America certificate with a seventh-place showing in the decathlon at the national outdoor meet in Austin.

In his first season as interim head coach in 2003, Fox led the Roadrunners to a pair of individual league titles and a fifth-place finish at the Southland Indoor. Additionally, Carl Johnson was named the meet’s Outstanding Track Performer.

The 2002 season saw Fox tutor his student-athletes to several more honors.

Both Youngblood and Ray won their respective pentathlons at the Southland Indoor Cham-pionships, while Youngblood also was the high jump champion, high-point scorer and Out-standing Field Performer. Ray went on to repeat as the heptathlon (outdoor) champion and the pair both finished seventh at the NCAA Championships to earn All-America accolades.

The UTSA men won the 2001 Southland Outdoor title and Fox also guided Ray and Young-blood to multi-event league titles during the season. Ray claimed pentathlon (indoor) and heptathlon (outdoor) crowns, while Youngblood was the indoor pentathlon champion.

Fox, a team captain at Texas in 1998-99, was an All-American and the first-ever Big 12 Champion in the heptathlon and decathlon. He also holds the U.S. Junior first-day total and long jump records and held the Big 12 Outdoor meet record in the decathlon from 1997-2009. In 1995, he broke Daley Thompson’s junior 100-meter dash mark in the decathlon and was the No. 1-ranked U.S. Junior and third-ranked junior decathlete in the world. Fox also still owns the Arizona Class 4A state record in the long jump (24-7) and his 10-year-old triple jump mark of 49-1 was broken in 2007.

A 1999 graduate with a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology, Fox served as an assistant with the Texas track & field camp from 1997-98 and with the Longhorns program until 1999.

Fox is married to the former Sarah Vestal and the couple has two children, June and Jacob.

assistant Coach Chris adams

Chris Adams is in his eighth season working with UTSA’s throwers. He has coached Richard Garrett Jr. to five All-America certificates and Andrew Akens to another two in addition to coaching 12 confer-

ence champions in his first seven years in the Alamo City. His athletes also have established new school records in nine events since his arrival.

Adams helped the UTSA men successfully defend their Conference USA Outdoor Championship last spring and that came on the heels of a sec-ond-place finish at the indoor meet. Jared Tyler won the league’s discus title and that came three months after Akens won the circuit’s indoor shot put crown for the second consecutive season. His athletes combined to score a total of 85 points (51 outdoor/34 indoor) at both conference meets a year ago.

He helped lead the UTSA men to the 2014 C-USA Outdoor Championship in their first season in the league and the women finished second at the indoor meet. Gar-rett Jr. won a pair of outdoor conference titles (discus/shot put) and collected numerous honors, as he was named the circuit’s Field Athlete of the Year and Field Performer of the Meet in addition to earning All-America accolades in the shot put with his fourth-place per-formance at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Akens also was an All-American (outdoor shot put) and conference champion (indoor shot). In fact, Adams’ athletes combined for a total of 63 points en route to the men’s league crown.

In 2013, Adams helped guide the Roadrunners men to their eighth consecutive indoor conference title in their lone appearance at the Western Athletic Conference Champion-ships, while the women finished second and just missed their first league crown since 1994. Garrett Jr. was tabbed the WAC Indoor Field Athlete of the Year and he went on to earn first-team All-America honors with his fourth-place finish in the shot put at the NCAA Indoor Championships. Katie Bragg also picked up a league championship in the weight throw and his athletes set four program marks.

Adams helped lead the UTSA men to a Southland Conference indoor/outdoor champion-ship sweep in 2012 and the women recorded their best outdoor finish (second) in 15 years. Garrett Jr. earned second-team All-America accolades at the NCAA Outdoor Champion-ships for the second consecutive season, successfully defended his Southland indoor shot put title and became the first thower in program history to win an outdoor conference cham-pionship when he won the shot. Phil Steinert also was victorious during the indoor cam-paign in the weight throw and he went on to place second in the hammer at the league’s outdoor meet. All told, the men established three new school records and four athletes competed at the NCAA Outdoor Championships Preliminary Rounds.

The women were just as successful, as Bragg successfully defended her conference ham-mer throw crown with a new Southland record, while Zaquita McClanahan captured gold in the shot put at the conference’s outdoor meet. Both went on to participate at the national meet in their respective specialty events.

The 2011 campaign saw Garrett Jr. earn second-team All-America honors in the shot put at both national meets (first All-America thrower in school history) and he also was named the Southland Indoor Outstanding Field Performer after winning the league’s shot put title and finishing sixth in the weight throw. Garrett Jr. went on to place second in both the shot and dis-cus and sixth in the hammer during the outdoor campaign. He established new program records in the indoor and outdoor shot in addition to breaking the Roadrunners’ 25-year-old discus mark at the Texas Relays. All told, the UTSA men earned six all-conference certificates (two indoor/four outdoor) and they set new school standards in every event he coached.

On the women’s side, Bragg won the program’s first-ever hammer title at the Southland Outdoor after finishing third in the weight throw during the indoor campaign. She set a new school record in the hammer at the Texas Relays and McClanahan established a new indoor shot put standard.

His second season in charge of the throwers saw a total of five new school records and seven student-athletes (five women/two men) that combined to score points 14 times at the Southland Indoor and Outdoor Championships. Leading the way was Garrett Jr., who qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships Preliminary Rounds (discus), posted a pair of runner-up performances at the league meets (indoor shot put/discus) and broke both UTSA’s shot put marks. Meanwhile, Bragg earned a silver medal in the hammer at the Southland Outdoor and established new program records in the weight throw and hammer.

In his first campaign, he guided Amber Byars (discus) and Taelor Wilson (shot put) to points at the Southland Outdoor and Indoor, respectively, and the pair also made their mark on the program’s all-time performance charts, moving into the top four in the hammer, weight throw and discus.

In his four seasons in San Marcos, Adams coached Abigail Ruston to 2007 NCAA Outdoor All-America honors in the shot put (second place) and Sara Stultz earned 2006 Southland Conference Track & Field Student-Athlete of the Year accolades. All told, Bobcats athletes set five league records and won a total of 14 individual championships under his direction.

Adams was a two-time All-American in both the shot and hammer at Ashland (Ohio) Uni-versity. The Findlay, Ohio, native earned his bachelor’s degree from Ashland in recreation administration after beginning his career at Kent State, where he was an all-conference performer from 1998-2000. He also earned a silver medal for Team USA at the 2002 North America, Central America and Caribbean (NACAC) Under-25 Track & Field Champion-ships and was a 2004 Olympic Trials qualifier in the shot put.

Adams is married to the former Amber Thompson and the couple has a daughter, Camdyn, and a son, Casen.

2736 Conference Championships

assistant Coaches Steven Brown & David hartman

Former Roadrunner standout Steven Brown is in his fifth season as a member of UTSA’s track & field coaching staff. He tutors the program’s sprinters

and jumpers and also assists with the team’s 400-meter relay.

Last season saw the UTSA men successfully defend their Conference USA Outdoor Championship. The Roadrunners also finished second at the league’s in-door meet and were led by sprinter Dionte Robinson, who was the squad’s leading scorer in his inaugural conference championship meet en route to being tabbed C-USA Freshman of the Meet.

Brown helped lead the men to the 2014 C-USA Outdoor Championship in their first season in the league and the women finished second at the indoor meet.

In 2013, he helped guide the Roadrunners men to their eighth consecutive indoor confer-ence title in their lone appearance at the Western Athletic Conference Championships, while the women finished second and just missed their first league crown since 1994. His athletes combined to win five individual league titles (three indoor/two outdoor) and they also set a pair of program records. Eboni Johnson swept the WAC indoor and outdoor triple jump championships, while Roscoe Robinson (outdoor long jump), Ronson Small (indoor triple jump) and Tyler Williamson (indoor long jump) also collected gold medals.

Brown helped lead the men to a Southland Conference indoor/outdoor championship sweep in 2012 and the women recorded their best outdoor finish (second) in 15 years. He also guided Williamson to outdoor All-America accolades in the long jump. After success-fully defending his Southland indoor title in his specialty event, Williamson placed second at the league’s outdoor meet and followed that performance with a school record at the NCAA Championships Preliminary Rounds, which qualified him for the national semifinals. Brown also helped lead Shahira Ehiemua to Southland Outdoor Freshman of the Year honors. His athletes won a combined three conference championships, collected eight all-league certificates and established a trio of school records in his first season as a full-time assistant. Additionally, a half dozen Roadrunners (four women/two men) competed at the national outdoor meet.

Brown previously served as a member of Aaron Fox’s staff in 2009 when he was the pro-gram’s student volunteer coach. UTSA won its fourth consecutive Southland Conference Indoor Championship that season.

A highly-decorated four-year letterwinner from 2005-08, the Mesquite native led the Road-runners to a total of four Southland Championships (three indoor/one outdoor) during his career, including the program’s first-ever indoor/outdoor sweep in 2008. A two-time South-land Champion and 14-time all-conference performer, he was tabbed the league’s Indoor Athlete of the Year in 2008 after scoring a meet-high 24 points. Brown also was a three-time NCAA All-Midwest Region honoree and he competed in the long jump at the 2006 NCAA Outdoor Championships. He ranks among the program’s top five all-time performers in four sprint events (indoor 60m & 200m/outdoor 100m & 200m) and both the indoor and outdoor long jump.

Brown is married to the former Cheria Wilson and the couple has a son, Braylon.

Former Roadrunners student-athlete and coach David Hartman rejoined the UTSA coaching staff in August 2014 and he is in his second season back in the Alamo City. Hartman, who previously coached the Roadrunners from 1996-98, oversees the

team’s distance program in addition to serving as the head cross country coach.

His first year back saw the Roadrunners men successfully defend their Conference USA Outdoor Championship and one of his athletes — Mike Medrano (1,500m) — ran at the national championship meet. That came on the heels of seventh-place finishes by both the men and women during the cross country campaign.

Hartman has picked up extensive coaching experience throughout his career in the Big Ten, Big 12, Southeastern and Southland conferences.

The Santa Clarita, Calif., native returns to UTSA after spending the past two seasons as an assistant at Purdue, where he was in charge of the Boilermakers’ distance/cross country programs.

Prior to his time in West Lafayette, Ind., Hartman helped develop elite middle distance and distance runners for Lamar during the 2012 track & field seasons. He coached seven Southland Conference individual champions while in Beaumont.

Hartman spent three years as the head track & field/cross country coach at Texas-Pan American from 2008-11 after serving as an assistant at Georgia the previous four years.

While with the Bulldogs, he coached 10 SEC individual champions and the women’s cross country program qualified for the NCAA Championships all four of his seasons, including a victory at the 2006 NCAA South Regional.

From 1998-2004, Hartman was an assistant at Texas A&M.

The Aggies advanced to four NCAA Championships (three women/one men), including a women’s crown at the 2000 NCAA South Central Regional, and he also helped lead the A&M men to the 2001 Big 12 Outdoor Track & Field Championship. All told, Hartman coached a dozen Big 12 individual gold medalists and a total of 85 all-conference perform-ers in his six campaigns in College Station.

Following a decorated career for UTSA, he coached the Roadrunners from 1996-98.

The men’s cross country program qualified for the national meet in 1997 in addition to the women capturing the Southland’s outdoor track & field crown the following spring. Hart-man, who was tabbed the league’s 1997 Cross Country Coach of the Year, mentored eight Southland champions and 30 all-conference selections in his first stint in the Alamo City.

The list of coaching accomplishments for Hartman also includes 22 All-Americans and he has been honored by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association four times with regional coaching accolades.

Before embarking on his coaching career, Hartman was a stellar distance/cross country runner at both Villanova (1991-94) and UTSA (1994-96).

He was an All-American in 1992 and part of a Wildcats team that finished fourth at the NCAA Cross Country Championships that year. The following fall, he helped lead Villanova to the Big East Cross Country Championship.

Hartman went on to be named the 1995 Southland Cross Country Athlete of the Year after winning the league crown in his first campaign as a Roadrunner. All told, he won a total of seven league individual titles in cross country and track & field and still holds the school’s indoor 5,000 meters record.

Hartman, who graduated from UTSA in 1997 with a degree in English, is married to the former Carla Dewey, who also was an decorated student-athlete for UTSA as a member of the Roadrunners volleyball program from 1993-96. The couple has one son, Julien, and a daughter, Sascha.

28 2016 UTSA Roadrunners Track & Field

assistant Coach adam hudson

Adam Hudson, who has coached All-America hurdlers in each of his first four years at UTSA, begins his fifth season as an assistant coach for the Roadrunners this spring. He tutors the program’s

400-meter sprinters, hurdlers, 1,600m relay team and women’s high jump-ers and multi-event competitors.

Last season saw the UTSA men successfully defend their Conference USA Outdoor Championship, as Keyunta Hayes swept both hurdles events for the second consecutive campaign. He and Jurmarcus Shelvin went on to earn honorable mention All-America accolades in the 400-meter hurdles. The outdoor achievements followed yet another successful indoor season. The Roadrunners finished second at the league’s indoor meet and were led by Hayes, who raced to victory in the 60m hurdles. Meanwhile, the women were led by Whitney Flannel, who matched UTSA’s 19-year-old record in the high jump and became the program’s first All-American in eight years following her 11th-place finish at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. That came on the heels of a C-USA title in her specialty event.

Hudson helped lead the UTSA men to the 2014 C-USA Outdoor Championship in their first season in the league and the women’s finished second at the indoor meet. Hayes earned first-team All-America laurels in the 400-meter hurdles by virtue of his sixth-place performance at the NCAA Outdoor Championships and his athletes accounted for three outdoor conference crowns (Hayes swept the 110m and 400m hurdles/1,600m relay). In fact, four Roadrunners placed among the top five in the 400m hurdles at the league’s outdoor meet (first through third and fifth place), which essentially clinched the team title for the Roadrunners.

Hudson helped guide the Roadrunners men to their eighth consecutive indoor conference title in their lone appearance at the Western Athletic Conference Championships, while the women finished second and just missed their first league crown since 1994. Joshua Smith raced to second-team All-America honors in the 400m hurdles at the NCAA Outdoor Championships and the indoor 1,600m relay of Nate Brunette, Darryl Wyrick, Smith and Christopher Hall raced to a conference title.

Hudson helped lead the UTSA men to a Southland Conference indoor/outdoor champion-ship sweep in 2012 and the women recorded their best outdoor finish (second) in 15 years.

He also guided Hayes to outdoor All-America honors in the 400-meter hurdles. Hayes raced to a fourth-place finish in the national final (second-best national performance in program annals), won a total of three South-land Championships (60m hurdles/110m hurdles/400m hurdles), set a pair of outdoor school records and advanced to the semifinals of the United States Olympic Trials. In fact, the Roadrunners claimed the top three spots in the league’s 400m hurdles final, which is believed to be a first in confer-ence history, and those three — Hayes, Wyrick and Smith — advanced to the NCAA Outdor Championships along with the squad’s 1,600m relay squad. All told, 12 of his athletes (seven women/five men) scored points in Southland competition in his first year in the Alamo City, including the five men who combined for 14 all-conference certificates.

Hudson sprent the previous seven years as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Texas State. He coached the Bobcats’ multi-event athletes and

jumpers in addition to serving as the program’s recruiting coordinator.

He mentored four Southland Conference award winners, 16 Southland Champions and four Texas State record holders in the combined events during his stay in San Marcos. Hudson also led three high jumpers to NCAA Championships berths.

After starting his coaching career in 2002 as Texas State’s head men’s cross country coach, he then was San Marcos Academy’s head track & field/cross country coach for two years.

A four-year letterwinner for the Bobcats, Hudson was a team captain his final two years. He won the 2002 Southland Championship in the 400-meter hurdles, earned all-league honors seven times and set a Texas State record in the 400m hurdles.

He received a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and mathematics in 2002 and added a mas-ter’s degree in sports administration five years later.

The Bay City native is a Level II USA Track & Field (USATF) coach in jumps and combined events, as well as an instructor for Level I USATF coaches’ education.

Hudson is married to the former Eloise Martin and the couple has a daughter, Cora, and a son, Wyatt.

44 2016 UTSA Roadrunners Track & Field

UTSA Olympians

One of the most decorated runners in UTSA men’s track & field his-tory, Roger Soler became the first athlete in school annals to com-pete in the Olympics when he ran in the 1984 Summer Games in

Los Angeles, Calif. A native of Peru, Soler was one of only two runners from the South American country to compete, as he ran in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters.

Known for his strong closing kick, he entered the Olympics as the Peru-vian national record holder in 800, 1,500, 3,000 and 5,000 meters. Soler, a veteran of many international competitions during his career, also com-peted in the 1987 Pan American Games for Peru.

Soler set several UTSA records during his three-year career, many of which still stand today. His indoor records of 4:03.84 in the mile (1983) and 8:10.09 in the 5,000 meters (1985) are in their third decade in the record book, as are his outdoor marks of 3:44.25 in the 1,500 meters (1983) and 13:55.1 in the 5k (1985). The 5-foot-8 Soler also became the first Roadrunner to qualify for any form of national competition when he competed at the 1983 NCAA Cross Country Championships.

He came to UTSA from Hancock Junior College in Santa Maria, Calif. Soler won the 1981 state cross country championship and finished sec-ond in the 1,500 and 5,000 meters.

Liza Hunter-Galva has the distinction of competing in a pair of Olym-pic Games, making her the second Roadrunner — and first woman — in school history to participate. The 1992 Southland Conference

Indoor Athlete of the Year ran the marathon at the 2004 Summer Games in Athens, Greece, and again this past summer in Beijing, China, for her native New Zealand.

Hunter-Galvan finished 51st in Athens (2:50:23) and improved 16 spots to 35th (2:34.51) in Beijing.

She was a four-year letterwinner in cross country and track & field at UTSA from 1989-93. The Aukland, New Zealand, native was the South-land Conference Champion in the mile and two-mile runs at the 1992 SLC Indoor, the first year UTSA competed for conference titles in the sport. Hunter-Galvan also helped the two-mile relay to a league crown and was named Outstanding Track Performer and Athlete of the Year after scoring a meet-best 22.5 points.

In cross country, she won the 1992 conference title and was named Ath-lete of the Year after helping the Roadrunners to their second consecutive team championship.
