CHAIRMAN'S MESSAGE

Dear Colleagues,

The beginning of a New Year has always indicated a task to ponder upon the events of the previous year and expectations from the next. My Message to KIOCL family is not much contrasting to this, because I sincerely believe that we have collective capacity to grow beyond our current best. This is possible only if we can analyze the past and prepare ourselves for the future.

Right from the inception of the Company, KIOCL has witnessed many ups and downs . Whenever there has been crisis irrespective of the magnitude, KIOCL collective has bounced back with renewed vigor and determination to take the Company forward. Due to subdued market condition and non-accessibility of iron ore, the 3.5 Million Tonnes per annum Pellet Plant could remain operational for only 140 days last fiscal. Further more, stoppage of mining operations in Karnataka in view of ban by the Apex Courts compelled the Company to source its ore from NMDC, Chattisgarh, incurring an additional expenditure of about Rs.1,500 per tone on logistics due to longer distance. Further, KIOCL has stopped export of pellets inspite of being 100% export oriented unit due to imposition of distance based charge by the Railways for iron ore. Despite these odds, our company produced 1.265 million tonnes and dispatched 1.236 million tonnes of pellets during the current fiscal. The cumulative profit before tax was Rs 32.34 crores and profit after tax was Rs 31.05 crores.

The present business environment is far more challenging than what it was in the past. In the face of all difficulties, let us strive hard to achieve our goal for a better future.

A Memorandum of Understanding between Ministry of Steel and KIOCL Limited was signed on 21.3.2013 at New Delhi. In the MOU signed with Ministry, KIOCL is proposing to set up beneficiation & pelletisation plants as green field projects by joining hands with other Central PSUs. KIOCL is also proposing to diversify into e-commerce activities besides solar power etc. The MOU envisages a target for production and sale of pellets of 18 Lakh Tons for the financial year 2013-14 at the Pellet Plant, Mangalore, which is our only & sustaining vertical.

KIOCL has submitted 28 mining lease and 8 prospecting license applications all over the country and is hoping for allotment of mines in the States of Karnataka, Jharkhand, Odisha & Andhra Pradesh. Our continuous efforts to get mining lease in various states has yielded positive results. An MOU for exploration & exploitation in joint venture with Andhra Pradesh Minerals Development Corporation (APMDC) for iron ore bearing asset in Ananthapur district of Andhra Pradesh is being formalized. A 2.4 million tonne a year, ore beneficiation plant and a pellet plant at a cost of Rs 1000 crores will be set up by KIOCL independently in Ananthapur utilizing the ore produced by the joint venture company .

The aforesaid challenges, demands your greater level of commitment and performance. Every one should look at the latent and new changes that have the potential of overturning the present status quo. History is replete with examples of the Darwinian finding which says that “ It is not the strongest or the most intelligent, but the one with the ability to manage change that survives “.

Nothing great was ever achieved without the commitment and enthusiasm. You are an important member of KIOCL TEAM and I need your constructive co-operation and support to make it the most admired organization.

With warm personal regardsYours sincerely

( Malay Chatterjee )

Horse's Mouth wishes them a happy, healthy and active retired life.

Why does the 100 rupee note have a small black triangle on its obverse?

It is a special feature to help the visually impaired to identify the denomination of the note. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is the sole issuing authority of banknotes in our country. Currency notes are designed in such a way so as to prevent criminals from counterfeiting them.

In 1996, the Mahatma Gandhi series of banknotes introduced various security features like watermarks and security threads that were not found on earlier currency notes. There is also an additional intaglio (raised print) on the left of the watermark window, on all banknotes except the Rs 5 and Rs 10 banknotes. This feature which can be seen only on the obverse (front) of the note comes in different shapes for various denominations – Rs 20 has a vertical rectangle, Rs 50 has a square, Rs 100 has a triangle, Rs 500 has a circle and Rs 1000 has a diamond.
