TThe friendship quilt on the cover of this year’s Annual Report, named “To the house of a friend the road is never long,” was sewn

and quilted by Rebecca Henry Boswell of Jackson, the mother of CFGJ President Linda Montgomery. A friendship quilt always

contains blocks created by friends of the quilter. In this case, the blocks were made by Ollie Jean Lane, Arlinda Brinkmann, Louise

Scott, Suzanne Schutt, Rosemary Hitt, Etta Mae Fowles, Ann Root, Lou Gill, Ginny Trainor, Sarah Martin, and Charlotte Hailey, most

of whom lived in the greater Jackson area at the time the quilt was made in 1994 and many of whom are still quilting together every

Wednesday afternoon, thirteen years later.

Letter from the Chairman of the Board and the President

The quilt is a tradition in America. For hundreds of years, women, and a few men,

have taken the scraps of their lives and stitched them together to make something

useful, yet beautiful. Some women were able to purchase lovely fabrics, silks, sateens,

velvets, and beautiful embroidery thread to embellish their work. Others used the

leftovers from the family’s utilitarian clothing, often sewing a new quilt top over an

older, worn one. Some quilts were passed down from generation to generation; others

were so heavily used that they barely lasted a generation.

Quilting was a group activity. Women joined in quilting bees to work on each others’

quilts. No doubt they all contributed fabric to these efforts, the contributions of all

joined together to make one beautiful thing. In this, our 2007 Annual Report, we

celebrate the art and tradition of quilting, of taking what you have and, working

together, creating something worthwhile.

During our 2006-2007 fiscal year, 848 donors, each listed on the inside cover, made

gifts to the Community Foundation of Greater Jackson. Most of these gifts were small,

membership gifts. Joined together, however, with the gifts of others, they totaled $2.4

million and enabled us to give away 572 grants totaling $2.3 million between April 1,

2006 and March 31, 2007.

The fabric of our community is enhanced by the variety of people and places that

compose it. We are a work in progress. If we want a community we can be proud of,

we must all work together to join each tiny piece of that fabric into one greater whole.

That’s what those of us involved in the Community Foundation of Greater Jackson

work toward every day. We encourage you to add to the lovely quilt that is the greater

metropolitan area.

Sincerely,

Fred L. Banks, Jr. Linda Boswell Montgomery

Chairman, Board of Trustees President, CFGJ

Hiatts Establish Permanent Fellowship for Artists

Dr. and Mrs. Wood Hiatt of Jackson recently established the Jane CraterHiatt Mississippi Invitational and Artist Fellowship Fund to benefit theMississippi Museum of Art’s Invitational competition and one promising, mid-career artist each year. “Having sponsored the biannual MississippiInvitational since 2001 and having initiated the Artist Fellowship of theMississippi Museum of Art in 2005, Wood and I wanted to be sure oursupport would continue even if something happened to us. That promptedus to establish a second endowed fund at the Community Foundation. Welove knowing that, as long as the Mississippi Museum of Art produces theexhibition and awards the fellowship, the funds will be available to them,”Jane writes.

Norma Sanders Bourdeaux, pictured with the Hiatts, was the 2006 winner. Over theyears, Norma has developed her signature landscape style. The superlative group oflandscapes exhibited in the Mississippi Museum of Art’s 2006 Invitational signaled aneven greater degree of sophistication and abstraction. Her proposal for theFellowship was to travel to Tuscany, where she could respond creatively to acompletely new landscape stimulus. Her plan fit neatly into Jane Hiatt’s belief thatmid-career travel and study can make an enormous difference in an artist’s vision, skill or scope, and the Fellowship will fund this trip and study.

The Community Foundation will hold and invest this Fund in perpetuity and will awardthe stipend to the Mississippi Museum of Art each year.

the funds will be available to them.”

Real Estate Donation Provides Win/WinSituation For Donors and CFGJ

In late 2000, the Foundation was contacted by a group of localattorneys who had, many years ago, formed a limitedpartnership to own an apartment complex in Oxford,Mississippi. The tax benefits they gained from the partnershiphad run out, and they were looking for a way to both unwind anold investment and do something good for our community. After talking to Cecil Brown, a former chairman of the Board ofTrustees of CFGJ, they decided to donate their interests in thelimited partnership to the Foundation. Each partner received asizable tax deduction, based on the appraised value of theproperty, and the Foundation received an income stream forseveral years. Ultimately, the partnership (the generalmanager, the Foundation, and one additional limited partner)decided to sell the apartment complex. The proceeds the salegenerated for the Foundation were divided 50-50 among donoradvised funds for each of the original donors and theCommunity Trust Fund, the Foundation’s unrestrictedendowment which provides grants each year to nonprofitorganizations in Hinds, Rankin and Madison Counties. This giftalmost doubled the value of the Community Trust Fund, whichmeans that the Foundation will be able to grant almost twice asmuch each year. The donors are busy making gifts to theirfavorite charities from their donor advised funds, truly a winningsituation for everyone involved.

Aura Neely-Gary Memorial Fund

Ted Gary, who has a successful engineering company in Gary, Indiana, grew up inJackson and attended Catholic schools here. Last year, he contacted the Foundationabout establishing a fund in memory of his mother Aura Neely-Gary. Mrs. Gary was anactive member of Anderson Methodist Church in Jackson, and Mr. Gary wanted toremember her by providing college scholarships to young women who might havedropped out of high school but who are trying to turn their lives around. The firstscholarships from the Aura Neely-Gary Memorial Fund were awarded in summer of 2007.

Dennis Bomgaars Memorial Scholarship Fund

A native of Iowa, Dennis Bomgaars eventually moved to Mississippi with his family toattend Reformed Theological Seminary in Jackson. He graduated with MastersDegrees in Christian Education and Biblical Studies and began working at Mt. SalusChristian School in Clinton as business manager. Dennis had a special place in hisheart for children and mentored and trained young people for almost 20 years throughhis work with the school and his church. After he died of cancer in 2006, his familyestablished the Dennis Bomgaars Memorial Scholarship Fund. The scholarship isawarded on an annual basis to a student in or rising to grades 1 through 6 at Mt.Salus Christian School and will be based on need.

Zora A. Brown Memorial Fund

When Zo Brown, long-time executive director ofFriends of Mississippi Public Broadcasting, died in2002, her many friends wanted to remember her ina special way. They did this by establishing a gardenin her honor on the grounds of the Mississippi PublicBroadcasting Building. Recently, Friends ofMississippi Public Broadcasting established the ZoraA. Brown Memorial Fund, primarily for perpetualmaintenance of the garden. The gift from Friends ofMPB is being held and invested by the CommunityFoundation, and a portion of the earnings will beused each year for the garden’s upkeep andmaintenance. Earnings not distributed will be addedto the principal, allowing the fund to grow.

“The Garden is the perfect

way to honor Zo’s memory,

and the Community

Foundation is the perfect

vehicle to ensure the

beauty of the Garden is

nurtured and maintained

long after we are gone.”

Endowment Growth through Careful Investment Management

The Community Foundation is about permanence. Weencourage donors to establish endowed funds so that grantscan be made from those funds both now and forever. That’swhy we say we are “For good. Forever.”

The chart below shows the growth of our oldest endowedfund. Established in December of 1995 with a gift of$850,000, the fund has awarded grants of $496,000, or58% of the value of the original gift. However, through carefulinvestment management by the Foundation’s investmentmanagers, the corpus is now worth $1.3 million, significantlymore than the original gift. After the donors’ deaths, theirnamed successor advisor can continue their tradition of givingthrough the Fund.

The Community Foundation makes three types of grants. Individuals who have

established donor-advised funds recommend to the Foundation those charities

they wish to help with their personal funds. (See pages 14-15 for a list of those

grants.) Scholarship and awards funds are given to those who qualify under the

restrictions of the various scholarship and awards funds we hold. (See page 12

for a list of these funds and those who received awards or scholarships.) For all

other funds of the Foundation, a committee composed of members of the

Board of Trustees and other volunteers read and study grant applications, visit

the nonprofits requesting funds, and meet to decide how to distribute those

funds. The names of these funds and the grantees are listed to the left.

While we are very happy to be able to award these grants, there is always more

need than we have funds to address. If you would like to contribute to any of

the funds listed on page 7, please contact our office at 601-974-6044 or by

e-mail to [email protected].

Grants from Scholarship and Awards Funds:

Nissan and BankPlus Fund Mini Grants through CFGJIt takes a village to raise a child and the greater community—all working together—to support the education of ourchildren. Nissan North America, BankPlus and the Community Foundation joined forces in early 2007 to create theNissan/BankPlus Education Mini-Grants Program to provide mini-grants to teachers of grades K-12 in the Canton PublicSchool District and Madison County School District, a total of 25 schools. In its first year, the program gave away$45,000 in 38 grants.

“With BankPlus as our plant’s financial institution, it was a natural fit for ourcompanies to form an alliance through the mini-grant partnership and providean even stronger effect on local education. We’re committed to helpingschools develop and nurture successful academic and career programs in theneighborhoods where our employees live and work,” said Dave Boyer, vicepresident of manufacturing for Nissan North America.

Any teacher, counselor, librarian, principal or other school personnel whoworks directly with students was eligible to apply for a grant. Grant awardsranged from $500 to $1,500 and supported innovative teaching and learningin conjunction with state-mandated curricula.

“Giving back to the communities we serve is, and always will be an importantpart of our culture at BankPlus. Whether it is grade school, middle school orhigh school, children truly are our future. BankPlus is proud of our partnershipwith Nissan and the opportunity it gives us to support the Education Mini-GrantProgram.” Gene Delcomyn, BankPlus President/Metro Region.

Both Nissan and BankPlus recognized that their skills were best used inmanufacturing automobiles and in banking, respectively. So they selected theCommunity Foundation to administer the program. Since 2000, theFoundation has administered the Jackson Public Schools Education FoundationTrust, a similar program. We also administer a variety of other scholarship andaward funds.

Anyone can be a philanthropist.Add your piece to the quilt that is our community.

Here’s how.

1. Become a Member. Every gift, no matter how small, helps us carry out our mission of buildingpermanent funds to benefit our community both now and in the future. As an option, our CornerstoneSociety makes it possible to have your gift automatically drafted from your account each month.

2. Talk to your financial advisor, accountant or attorney about opening a charitable-giving, donor-advised fund orabout making a gift to one of our existing funds. Through a donor-advised fund, you can recommend grants tothe charities of your choice and name someone to continue recommending grants from your fund after yourdeath.

3. Think about establishing a fund that is designated for one or more charities you care about. If funded beforeyour death, each charity you name will receive an annual check from the Foundation in your name. If establishedas a bequest, each charity you name prior to your death will receive an annual check, every year…forever.

4. Consider a gift now or in the future to our Community Trust Fund. This fund enables our Grants Committee toseek out emerging needs in our community and address them. It is not limited to any charity or field of interest.

5. Keep the memory of someone you love alive through a memorial fund or scholarship in that person’s name.

Once a fund is established, the Foundation’s staff becomes your staff. We handle the accounting, paperwork, grantdelivery, etc. The minimum size to establish a named fund is $25,000, but gifts to existing funds are accepted andappreciated in any amount. The official registration and financial information of the Community Foundation of Greater Jackson, Inc. may be obtained from the Mississippi Secretary of State’s Office by calling 1-888-236-6167. Registration by theSecretary of State does not imply endorsement by the Secretary of State.
