Valleys of Lent Technically, a valley is a low area between hills or mountains often with a river or body of water running through it. Valleys in the Bible can

have much deeper spiritual conotations to them. This Lent we will be walking through the, “Valleys of Lent.” We will visit many Biblical valleys and draw sacred lessons from each one.

Ash Wednesday begins our Lenten journey through the, “Valley of Dry Bones.” During Lent we will walk through “The Hebron Valley”, “The Jordan Valley,” “The Valley of the Wine Press,” we learn of the promise of God that, “Every Valley shall be Lifted Up.” Hopefully we will all come to, “The Valley of Decision,” through the Words of Joshua.

This March Lent begins on the 6th with Ash Wednesday I would like to encourage everyone to plan now not to miss the “Valleys of Lent,” during this wonderful season. This series will certainly make your Holy Week special and give you deeper meaning on Maundy Thursday when we walk with Jesus through, “The Kingdom Valley,” where He asks His disciples to “watch and pray.” Then finally Good Friday leads us with our Lord into, “The Valley of the Shadow of Death.” Looking Forward to the Valleys, Pastor Dreier

2019 Lenten Series -- Valleys of Lent

Each Wednesday we will have a supper at 5:30 PM and Lenten Service at 7:00 PM in the sanctuary. A freewill offering will be taken at the supper. Confirmation classes will meet from 6:00-6:45 PM. March 6 .................................. The Valley of Dry Bones “You are dust, and to dust you shall return,” the Lord God said to Adam and Eve, in words the church recalls each Ash Wednesday. Ezekiel’s Valley of Dry Bones provides a vivid picture of that, along with the hope of the Spirit’s gift of new life. Supper served by Sow-Sew & Properties (Lawn Crew). March 13 ......................................... The Hebron Valley Sin begins to show its ugly results in the Hebron Valley where the sons of Jacob plot to murder their brother Joseph, reminiscent of Cain and Abel. Supper served by Elders. March 20 .......................................... The Jordan Valley At the Jordan Valley, about to cross the river in to the promised land, we have opportunity, like Moses, to look back at all the Lord has provided us and to look forward to what God has in store. Supper served by Christian Education & Stewardship (Counters). March 27 ...................... The “Valley” of the Wine Press Gideon was hiding from the marauding Midianites in The “Valley” of the Wine Press, a poor place to be threshing wheat. From there God called this unlikely hero to valiant victory. Supper served by LWML. April 3 ........................... Every Valley Shall Be Lifted Up “Every Valley Shall Be Lifted Up,” says the prophet Isaiah about the coming of the Lord to rescue his people from captivity. Valleys still need to be raised up (and mountains and hills made low) for the Lord’s arrival. Supper served by Altar Guild. April 10 ......................................The Valley of Decision “Choose this day whom you will serve,” Joshua said to the Children of Israel before he died. Lent continues to call us to what the prophet Joel calls The Valley of Decision. Supper served by Youth.

TAX TIP If you are at least 70 ½ and have an IRA with a required minimum distribution, I learned about a possible opportunity to avoid paying taxes on all or part of that distribution. You can make a direct charitable gift to public charities (OSL) without having to report it as taxable income in your federal income tax return. In other words, if you are going to give a gift or tithe and it comes directly to OSL from a qualified IRA distribution, it is not considered taxable income. This is for outright (direct) gifts only – not life-income gifts. Len Carter – not a qualified tax advisor – please consult your accountant or personal tax advisor about qualified charitable distributions.

Endowment Fund

The Endowment Fund was created in Nov. 2002 to received gifts and bequests for use for the mission and ministry of Our Savior Lutheran Church. The earnings to be used for projects at OSL that are not part of our operating budget. 25% must be for ministries outside of OSL.

Gifts to the Endowment Fund can be made for any reason. Perhaps in memory of a loved family member or friend. Or to honor special occasions like, a birthday or anniversary, the baptism of a child or grandchild. Christian estate planning is part of your stewardship of your accumulated material wealth. You can make a bequest in your will to benefit the Endowment Fund.

Endowment gift envelopes are in the narthex and may be placed in the offering plate. LCMS has Estate and Gift Planning counselors available if you want assistance with preparing a will. Gene Meints, Chair
