11 The Lakes'' Club can feel proud of their achievements in winning the Flag and producing such pla.yers as Phil Phenny (Davey Medal winner) and Greg Armstrong who might have a big future in Melbourneo

Other players worthy of mention include Jan Krysz (Killarney Vale) and Allan Hammond (Terrigal) winner and ruiµier·up in Don's FurnituJ"e Courage Awardo ·

Narara-Wyoming have the distinction of winnin& the first U/17 Flago There are many young bulldogs there to ensure strength in their camp

Bob Thomas (Terrigal) and Mike Davey (The Lakes) reached their 100 th game on the Central Coast. a great efforto

Although beaten soundly by lllarwarra in our only rep game of the yearg we learnt plenty in playing techniques and selection etc.,. Congratulations to those selected and to Coach Wayne Winslade and team Manager Bob Kerro Dave Evendon (Narara-Wyoming) played well to win the ::entral Coast best player awardo

Our playing fields were restricted this year but thanks to Mt Penang Training School we were able to scrape througho ·

Special thanks to our League Delegates _on the sports council Des McKenzie and Bob Ferriev Allan Jones and Reg Yaldwin for their efforts on Regietrationso

Thauks also to our gentlemen on the Protests and Disputes Committee and to Ian Granla..11d,, Dave Spillard and Terry Hogan Planning Committee.,

Len Palmer's help with the organising of Umpires was greatly appreciated as was all Umpires who gave their valuable time .. We look forward to seeing an Umpires Association formed next ,ear and more men with the loyalty of Bnice Jenkins are needed.,

The K:i.llarney Vale Club affiliated this time last year and caused,a great deal of speculation as to their numbers and ability,, During the season they aiequitted themselves admirably and earned a good deal of respect from opposing sides.,.

DONas FURNITURE AWARD 1978 was the first season where we found a local firm good enough to donate a sum of money to the League to be used :for the promotion of the gameo The Executive saw fit to instigate a weekly award where a player judged the most courageous in each match was awarded one pointe In conjunction with COURAGE BREWERIES 9 one of those players selected eaieh week was given a ca.rton of COURAGE CANS., These particular rewards were most gratefully received and faithfully applied~ At the end of the season 0 Jan Krzys of the Killarney Vale Club 9 took out the $150 first prize with Terrigal ruckman, Alan Hammond 9 satisfied with the $50 Runner~Up Awards Don 6 s Furniture also made available an additional $300p of which $200 went to the Premiership Club 9 The Lakes and $100 to the Runners~Up 8 Gosfordp League President, George Clarke has thanked the proprietor of DoN°S FURNITURE, Mr Don Kennedy; for his sponsorship and association with the League, Qne which I feel everyone concerned with Australian Football on the Coast sincerely~appreciatedo

LEAGUE AWARDS

~Y!!Y~. f.edEl! This year, for the first· time, two players tied on 17 votes, however when a countback was taken it was found that Phil Fenney from The Lakes Club polled the most number of three point voteso Runner~up was Jan Krzys from Killarney Vale and in third plac·e was up and coming Go sf ord forward, Leigh Sullivan who polled 160 R.T. Hogan Memorial Trophy This is an annual trophy donated by the Hogan family (who are closely associated with the Narara-Wyoming Club) and is awarded to the Runner-Up to the Davey Medal. As previously mentioned, the trophy was won by Jan Krzys from the Killarney Vale Clubo 2GO Leading Goalkicking Award This year won by Davey Medal winner, Phil Fenney from The Lakes Club who kicked a mamoth 76 goals at the end 'of the home and away matches. This, together with 6 in the final series, took his total for the season to 82.

JUNIOR FOOTBALL - Reg Yaldwyn The season 1978 was a very important era for the promotion of Australian Football on the Central Coast, with the initiation of junior footbal~. Each of the six senior_clubs took up the challange and fielded under 17 age group teams. Because of the problems associated with late recruiting, the final result was the establishment of two junior teams which comprised boys far stronger physically than the other four and whilst we take our hats off to these two teams we also admire the pluck of the other four teams in the competition. These boys never gave in and if we are to hold them then the administration of junior football must be left in the hands of a Junior Association. The Narara~Wyoming Junior team won the grand final in no uncertain manner and to them we all send our sincere congrat­ulations~ Well done boys, I am sure that all good followers of the game will be looking forward to seeing you next season. The Gosford Club after having real problems early 0 finished off well, to be runners-up to Narara~Wyoming. Again, well done boyso Congratulations to the Central Coast Australian Rules Football Leagu~ Executive for handing out medals to boys who played in the composite team on Grand Final Dayo A particular thanks to Wayne Winslade from the Terrigal Club for his help.

PLANNING and DEVELOPMENT --------------~-------The Committee presented a very detailed and comprehensive report = compliments of David Spillard - which was discussed at a General Meetingo Most of the proposals were adopted with a view of future planningc

GROUNDS As the President has recorded, we suffered from the acute shortage of playing fields during the year.· We were extremely fortunate through the grace of Mr Laurie Maher and staff at ·the Mt Penang Training School to have the use of the facilities of that establishment. In 1979 we invisage the use of Rogers Park 0 Woy Woy (af~er it's returfing), together with the long awaited ground at the Coburg Street end of the Hylton Moore CompTex, East Gosford. Wyong Shire Council have also allocated land, presently being used as a garbage tip, in the Bateau Bay Area, adjacent to Forresters Beach. Talks held with Council Officers late this year indicate that the oval will not be ready for the 1979 season, however, it does appear that the money and effort currently being put in on that ground should make it one of the best on the Coast in 1980. Correspondence has also passed between Mr Keith 0 8Connell, M.L.A., a League Patron, regarding the possibility of leasing a parcel of Crown Land in the Sommersby Area. Mr O'Connell bas forwarded our letter on to the Minister for Lands and we expect a favourably reply.

UMPIRES Again we had the expertise of former VFL Umpire, Len Palmer, to fall back on. No so much in an active way, but in th.e selection and appointment of umpires to matches. Besides our locals, we were lucky to have the use of former Western Australian Umpire, Ron Irwin, together with one Sydney umpire each week. We hope to continue this in 1979 and also add to our local panel so that competition in the umpiring ranks w~ll lead to better umpires. Also next year we expect the formation of an Umpires' Association~ regular coaching of umpires and weekly lecturesc

INJURED PLAYERS' FUND It was agreed early in the year to disbanithe League Injured Players° Fund and it appeared that the individual funds operated by each club sufficed. The State Government has put forward a proposal to instigate a Sports Injury Plan~ Presently the New S~uth Wales Australian Football League are studying the plan to ascertain if it is _ suitable to our gameo At this stage it would appear that it will be adopted and players will be expected to pay an. annual ·premium of no less than $4~ It might be noted that this cover will be for permanent disability only.

THE FUTURE

.1979 will be a milestone in Australian Football on the Central Coasto It will see the introduction of a Reserve Grade· Competition and an under 15 competitiono This will mean that club officia!'S"°'will have to work twice as hard to put their teams on the field each weekend. Properly planned this will be an easy task, but hard.work is what is requ~red!

This League has seen fit to support the formation ·of a N.s.w. Country Football League 0 something that is well overdue in this stateo Indications are that all Leagues currently ·affiliated with the N.s.w.A.F.L. welcome this move as do certain Leagues in the Riverina Area of N.s.w. If football in this state is restructured. administratively, we could well see N.s.w. emerge as a dominate force in Australian Rules FootballQ

The Executive has discussed.the proposal of having a weekly programme published next season which would be on sale at each of the games. This of course is a mamoth task but is one which would give the players and followers of Aussie Rules on the · Coast an opportunity to know what is happening in their League in particular and in their state in generalG This matter is still under review. ,
