Earthquake
The New Normal in Haiti:
Hurricane
Cholera
Death. Destruction. Disease. These words have become are all too familiar in the Haitian vocabulary.
The January 2010 earthquake killed over 316,000 people and demolished much of the capitol city of Haiti. Hundreds of thousands of survivors fled Port-au-Prince and sought shelter with family and friends in nearby communities. With more than 2/3 of the Haitian labor force already unemployed and living on less than $2 a day, this put a tremendous strain on families and communities already struggling to feed their own.
Enter Hurricane Tomas. While the 21 deaths and 6,500 people left homeless following Tomas, seemed minimal in comparison to the astronomical numbers following the earthquake, Tomas caused extensive damage. Damage that our wealthy Western society has often overlooked. The hurricane hit Haiti’s breadbasket in the Southeastern part of the country with a vengeance. Precious banana, coconut, corn, and yam crops were annihilated.
Health workers also feared that flooding related to Tomas on the island could exacerbate the ongoing cholera outbreak. Their fears seem to have become a reality. Over 4,672 cases have been diagnosed since the first case was detected in October last year and these numbers are still climbing.
A country already in crisis is experiencing an additional affliction. Famine.
Food for Haiti Costs and Details:
Each case provides 216 meals for $25.
One case will feed a family of 6 with a nourishing meal each day for an entire month.
The program is administered by RMI’s staff both in Haiti and the US.
RMI works in cooperation with The Evangelical Baptist Mission of Southern Haiti (MEBSH). MEBSH consists of over 487 churches in Southern Haiti.
RMI is a member in good standing with the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability
These nutritious meals were scientifically created to help those suffering from scabies, malnutrition and other life threatening illnesses. Manna packs have also been shown to improve the health, growth and physical well-being of adults and children no longer in immediate danger of starvation.

How the Program Works
Step 1: Donate to RMI’s Food for Haiti by visiting rminet.org and clicking
“donate now” or mailing a personal check
Step 2: A container of food is shipped from the US and transported by
truck to the RMI headquarters in Haiti.
Step 3: RMI staff unload the container and load
smaller trucks with food for designated
distribution sites
Step 4: Once at the site, food is removed
from the truck, unpacked and prepared
for distribution.
Step 5: Local church leaders assemble a list of individuals and families to receive food. This is based on their need.
Step 6: Food is given out to those for whom it was
designated. There is much rejoicing for the
Provision of a hot meal! The Missing Ingredient is YOU!
