Young Eagles Day (cont.):

The weather was great for the event with the temperatures in the mid 60’s and warming into the low

70’s as the morning went on. There was a fresh breeze from the East so the pilots were using run-

way 9 and heading out to the northeast over the lake and making a circle of Fond du Lac to the east

and south before returning to the field.

Some of the kids reported a few bumps in the road but it was really pretty calm so everyone had a relaxed flight.

The following kids were flown by our Chapter:

Many thanks to the chapter members who made this a very special day for this latest group of Young Eagles.

Volunteer at Fond du Lac for AirVenture 2015: Once again, the calendar has rolled around to AirVenture time. The dates for this year are Sunday, July 19 through July 26. This is a little bit earlier than in previous years but should still result in a good turnout of pilots flying in. As always, we will be looking for help at Fond du Lac with setup, aircraft parking, camping and cleanup/teardown. While there is a lot of work to be done, it is always interesting and a good chance to spend some time with fellow Chap-ter members. Last year, for the first time in many years, Oshkosh filled up and at one point closed down due to an acci-dent. While we can all do without the accidents, having Wittman full and sending their overflow to Fondy is something to look forward too. It keeps us busy and helps bring in a few few hours.to the treasury. John Zorn will be posting the sign up sheet on the web page on XXXXXXXX. Please take a few minutes to visit the site and put your name down for a few hours. A few Fond du Lac memories from last years airshow:

June Meeting: By Jim O’Connor

Our speaker for the June meeting was Dick Hanusa. He is our liaison with EAA for our parking opera-

tions during AirVenture. In addition, Dick worked at the Milwaukee FISDO before joining the EAA staff.

He gave a very interesting review of the logistics of planning for the various aircraft and displays that are shown at AirVenture. He told us about the problems that he has had to solve related to the very large planes that have been to KOSH. He has had to obtain via loan or rental specific tugs, booms, dollies air starters, generators etc. from other air-ports, the US Air Force and the Wisconsin National Guard. He discussed the upcoming AirVenture and the B 52 that will be coming. It has a huge wingspan with outrigger wheels. They have had to remove runway lights and other air-port items to allow for the landing/ taxiing of this very large dis-plays. He also mentioned the type of emergency equipment on the airport as well as from the City of Oshkosh and surrounding municipalities. I found it interesting that the airshow would have to be closed if certain pieces of equipment from a city had to leave the airport to respond to a local emergency.

Something from Pilot Workshops Pilot Workshops always seems to have something of interest in their emails. Take a few minutes to sign up for them at their web site.

Featuring Wally Moran Bob: "Let's talk a little bit about the discipline of taxiing on centerline, and always having the proper crosswind controls in as we go out from our taxi spot to the end of the runway."

Wally: "You bet. It costs the airport a lot of money to paint those yellow lines on the ramps and on the taxiways, and they put them there to help us, Bob. If we stay on the yellow line we should be assured of maximum wingtip clearance. And obviously that's an important factor as we're taxiing in tight areas. Crosswind controls - it's a discipline thing. If we do it every day it will be-come a habit that is easy to do for us. If we only do it on a day when it's really windy we're probably going to make a mistake, and instead of helping the situation we're going to aggravate the situation. I often see that with pilots."

Plane.

Wow, remember - you saw it first on CNN:

Famous Quote

In flying I have learned that carelessness and overconfidence are usually far more dangerous than de-

liberately accepted risks.

— Wilbur Wright in a letter to his father, September 1900.

If you are looking for perfect safety, you will do well to sit on a fence and watch the birds; but if you really wish to learn,

you must mount a machine and become acquainted with its tricks by actual trial.

— Wilbur Wright, from an address to the Western Society of Engineers in Chicago, 18 September 1901.

Part 1 Calculation of Density Altitude on a Spreadsheet

—————————————————————————–————————————————————————-

Editorial Note:

Density altitude is pressure altitude corrected for nonstandard temperature. As temperature and altitude increase, air density decreas-

es. In a sense, it's the altitude at which the airplane "feels" its flying. It is a good thing for pilots to have an understanding of density

altitude and affect it haves on their plane. This becomes more interesting certainly if you are flying off a short runway with full fuel

tanks on a very hot day in the high plains.

The president of my old EAA Chapter in Illinois learned about density altitude the hard way. He and his brother (both very big fel-

lows) took off from a short grass strip in Illinois after filling the tanks on his Long Eze on a hot summer day. The landing gear

caught the wires on a fence at the end of the runway, the plane flipped upside down and caught fire. Neither brother was able to get

out. Those charts in the back of the POH are there for a good reason. If you haven’t reviewed them in a long time it might be worth

while to review them.

Spend a little time with the following spreadsheet. Change some of the inputs and see what the affect is on the density altitude. I

will continue Sean’s discussion in next months newsletter.

—————————————————————————————————————————————————————

We are going to keep this simple. The objective of this article is to show how to write a Microsoft Excel program that relates to avi-

ation. It also works for Numbers on an iPad. Programs do not have to be complicated and this one combines readily available infor-

mation with one line of number crunching. Simple, Huh? Admittedly, that one line is a humdinger. You don't need to understand the

equation. Either trust me on this one or wade through NASA articles. In either Excel or Numbers enter the cells as shown below:

A2 Field elevation in feet msl?

A3 Airport altimeter setting?

A4 Temperature in degrees °F?

A7 Density altitude

B1 Input

B6 Output

B7 =145457*(1-(1.94567/(B4+459.7)^0.23494)*(0.01+(B3^0.19025-0.000013125*B2)^5.2564)^0.23494

To calculate density altitude, all you have to do is enter the current field elevation, altimeter setting, and temperature (the “Inputs”)

into Cells B2-B4, and the density altitude will appear in Cell B7. This is how it will appear on the screen:

Three more lines will be added in Part 2 in order to calculate takeoff distances at various density altitudes. If patience is not your

strong suit, you can find all the programs in this series in Chapter 25 of STEM for All Ages. For more on that go to http://

sites.google.com/site/seangdwyer/.
